Senate Hearing to Examine ‘Inappropriate’ Use of OBL Mission Codename ‘Geronimo’

A previously scheduled Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing on racist Native American stereotypes will now include discussion on the use of a codename used during the bin Laden kill-or-capture mission: “Geronimo.”
A committee aide told ABC News today that linking the name of the native American leader with the world’s most wanted man is “inappropriate” and can have a “devastating” impact on kids.
“The hearing was scheduled well before the Osama bin Laden operation became news, but the concerns over the linking of the name of Geronimo, one of the greatest Native American heroes, with the most hated enemies of the United States is an example of the kinds of issues we intended to address at Thursday’s hearing,” Loretta Tuell, the committee’s chief counsel, said in a statement.
“These inappropriate uses of Native American icons and cultures are prevalent throughout our society, and the impacts to Native and non-Native children are devastating,” Tuell added. “We intend to open the forum to talk about them.”
“A Native frame of reference is one that is inundated with appropriation and misrepresentation of who we were, and who we are today,” Debbie Reese, a native American, writes on the Wall Street Journal website. “There are research studies that point to the negative effects of this sort of imagery on the self-esteem and self-efficacy of Native children. There are other studies that point to the high rates of suicide, and, to the high drop-out rates of our children.”
She adds: “If your (non-Native) point of view is Geronimo as the courageous leader, then you probably think the use of his name honors him and links him to the courage of the Navy SEALS who carried out the operation. … If your point of view is Geronimo as the blood-thirsty savage, then you probably think that Geronimo was a terrorist.”
Geronimo was an Apache leader around the turn of the century who was on of the last of his tribe to surrender to the U.S. He was widely feared during his time, during which he fought both U.S. and Mexican forces.
ABC says the codename was not actually given to bin Laden, but rather was used to represent the actual act of killing the terrorist.
What do you think?
Author’s note: Is it ironic to anyone else that the actual committee discussing this is called the Senate Indian Affairs Committee?

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 3:49pm@hadENOUGH ~~~ Amen to that suggestion!
Just encountered a young man doing some work in our home who said he much preferred the current administration to the last. I said, “Well, we can stop this conversation right now. We are TEXANS and “W” was / is my hero. Yes, he made mistakes, but that man LOVED AMERICA.This administration, not so much. So, we are done with this part of the conversation.”
He then switched to all the wars even between races in whichever country, etc., and I said, “Hold it right there. The `peace’ movement has always been a lie. JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF said, “I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law And a man‘s foes will be those of his own household’….”
By his response to that quote, I think the young man was surprised. I hope he looks it up tonight when he gets home.
Worked like a charm.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 3:07pmThe fact of the matter is: It was the Mexicans who named him Geronimo. This appellation stemmed from a battle in which, ignoring a deadly hail of bullets, he repeatedly attacked Mexican soldiers with a knife, causing them to utter appeals to Saint Jerome (”Jeronimo!”). The name stuck
His real Native American name was Goyahkla. They should be using that name, not the one the Mexican’s labeled him with.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 3:46pmSince when does the Constitution mean anything? After all, we now living in a country of “Change”. We have a usurper in the White House and the Congress would rather waste it’s time investigating codenames. Mr. Obama is not a “Naturalized Citizen” and is using a fraudulent SS# and has released a fraudulent birth certificate. Silence from the media (including Glenn Beck). I never thought that much of the “birther” (Constitutionalists) issue until Donald Trump brought up the birth certificate. After spending some time doing my “homework” I have come to the conclusion there are enough questions concerning Mr. Obama for hearings and sensible reporting from the media. Silence. Most of the people investigating Mr. Obama’s eligibility has been done by attorneys and the military. They are not a bunch of “wackos” like the media would like you to believe. I was a huge fan of Glenn‘s and would race home from work to make sure I wouldn’t miss his TV show. Not so much anymore. Sad times for America.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 7:54pmI thought Geronimo was a bad choice. I don’t feel it is so egregious that it merits an investigation, but nevertheless the choice was bound to cause backlash from Native Americans. They have a legitimate gripe.
Personally, I feel Mole would have been a better choice as in “wack-a-mole.”

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 9:05pmAnother waste of time and tax payers’ dollars. Also another distraction to make everyone forget about the debt ceiling crisis.
When I was a child, we would yell Geronimo when we were jumping off the high dive at a pool. It was not meant as a slur, but instead as an act of fearlessness. Thus it was more of a compliment to the chief’s braveness. Enough of this political incorrectness baloney. It’s very easy to twist any statement around just to get attention and sympathy. Now that is cowardly.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 9:47pmOh great, folks round here will use this all they can….I have Native in me as most do not realizing it, including Apache and Commanche, and find it more honorable they use these names as it keeps the history alive in a way….
First Apache means enemy and was not a tribe….The Government gave the name Apache because they heard the Natives speak this word….
Second, “Indian” Affairs, really, can’t we spend our time on important issues?
Third, I’m not sure many are aware of this but here in OK, Natives actually have their own Nation, Government, and now Casinos….In running adds in the local papers for employment it says: “The Cherokee Nation will give preference to Native applicants over non-native applicants!” So pretty much they disrciminate based on your race and it is ok!
Fourth, A Native around here is someone with 1/100000000000 Native in them and get tax breaks in auto Tags, taxes, free food, free school supplies, etc thru monies the US government gives the Nation….You can be a snow white red headed person whos great great grand pappy signed the “Indian” role and the Government pays your way!
PATHETIC!!!!

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 10:00pmI will say there is some irony in this:
Geronimo was a leader like Cochise of the Natives in response to US settlers, thru their eyes, occupying their lands…..
Osama was a leader of Muslims in response to US settlers occupying their lands…..
Ironic isn’t it……

He died in the war, but I rememeber one thing that stuck with me. She said he sent her a letter telling her that, when he made his first jump, he yelled JERONIMO!!! at the top of his lungs. It made her proud and she had a tear when she told me. Well guess what? When I made my first jump I yelled JERONIMO!!! and told her so! I’ll bet she got a tear in her eye again. So 25 years later she got to hear it again! ! .
