Senate Kills GOP Effort to Repeal ObamaCare

The party lines were clearly drawn Wednesday evening as Democrats remained united in opposition to Republicans‘ efforts to repeal last year’s controversial health care overhaul law.
Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s procedural maneuver succeeded in forcing a vote on the issue, however, a potential victory for the GOP as support for a repeal continues to climb.
Likewise, all Republicans voted together in favor of the McConnell-sponsored amendment, bringing the final vote to 47-51. The House passed the repeal measure in January.
Efforts to repeal the measure — namely the requirement for every American to purchase health care insurance — now rest in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court which is expected to hear arguments from an alliance of 26 states challenging the law’s constitutional basis. The high court may hear the case during its next term, which begins in October, although a number of members of Congress have urged the court to expedite the ruling.
The Senate did succeed, however, in agreeing on the repeal of one of the bill’s unpopular IRS reporting provisions. In a vote of 81-17, the Senate struck down the 1099 reporting requirement which would require businesses to report annual purchases of goods or services valued at more than $600 to each vendor.
The 1099 provision repeal must still be approved by the House of Representatives, but the GOP majority has signaled its support for a quick vote.
Once passed, President Obama is expected to sign off on the repealed provision. Until now, Democrats and Republicans have been unable to agree on how best to offset the $19 billion in lost revenue. The Senate-approved measure seeks to offset the cost by granting the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) authority to identify unobligated funds with a specified exemption of funds from the Social Security Administration.
Seventeen Democrats voted against the measure, many hesitant to give OMB the power to cut federal funds.
“What is convenient is not always right,” said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., who voted against the 1099 repeal. “The Constitution places in our hands, and ours alone, the authority to appropriate funds. We cannot statutorily pass that buck and we should not.” Levin instead proposed an alternative 1099 measure that would have used taxes collected from the oil and gas industry to fund the repeal.

Now each one of these Senators swore an oath to uphold the constitution and now they are voting for a law that is unconstitutional. Posted on February 2, 2011 at 7:07pmWith so many Democrat seats in contention, 26-28 or so, I’m wondering why they did not vote for its repeal? Is it because they think we won’t remember in November of 2012, or is it because they think they can tell it they thought it was already dead because of the Federal court judgment in Florida? “Democrat Mark Warner of Virginia and Independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut missed the vote.”
Maybe THIS is why Mark Warner “skipped” the vote, from http://bearingdrift.com/2011/01/24/mark-warner-reads-tea-leaves-tries-jumping-back-to-center-right/
In a great piece by Bill Bartel, Mark Warner is teaming with Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss to announce trillions of dollars in spending cuts across the board, leaving no stone unturned.
While this is welcome news given the ever-growing deficit, why the sudden about face?
After voting for the stimulus ($825 billion) the additional stimulus spending ($192 billion) allowing cap and trade to move forward ($646 billion or $2 trillion, depending on the study) the health care bill ($940 billion) and loads more bills of ignorant, unapologetic spending.
In case you’re adding, that total is 2.6 trillion or 4 trillion depending on the study, that Mark Warner has authorized in spending in just over two years of elected office.
And now he’s having a bipartisan conversion? Please.
Please. But at LEAST he has til 2014, well into the Biblical apocalypse forthcoming.

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 2:01amThe constitution is really inconvenient I know…
We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice and ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE …..
A. At last, I can FINALLY leave my job to start my own business, and not have to worry about pre-existing conditions preventing me from qualifying for health insurance. But what about the “job killing” you say? The GOP failed to mention that becoming “unemployed” because of your new FREEDOM TO RETIRE was the primary job killer?! What a bizarre coincidence none of them ever mentioned that FACT….even the paragons of virtue that make up the Tea Party?! Say it ain’t so!!!
B. Be careful to examine the current polling data on outright repeal.
C. Compare the mortality rate of your fellow citizens that have health insurance to those that don’t. Then look at the estimated number of Americans that perish each year as a direct result of this lack of insurance, and think of a excuse that allows you to sleep at night.
D. Demand your elected representatives LOUDLY call for repeal leading up to the 2012 election.
E. Enjoy election night as much as I will.
F. F is the GOP letter grade on this issue for the last 50 years. As W. said many times “we cannot accept the soft bigotry of low expectations.” On this issue the democrats took that advice…and got a passing grade, just ask former senate majority leader Bill Frist (R).
G. God forgives the rest of you in spite of your heartlessness for the uninsured.
H. Heckle me and expose yourself for what you are.

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 7:31amThis vote was nothing but a cheap ploy by the RINOs in the Congress to gain our favor. If the Republicans are really serious about shutting down Obama Care they‘d pull the plug on financing the Junta’s appeal of U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson decision.
But oh no; the Rino’s are merely content to orchestrate an act. Let’s see how gullible the American People really are.
Tell the Congress to pull the plug on the Obama Regime’s appeals.

I’m your huckleberry…..
Promote the general welfare- I don’t think these words mean what you think they mean…
Report Post »A. I shouldn’t have to pay for your pre existing conditions. Sorry, them’s the grapes.
B. Polling? That matters between right and wrong? The Jacobins used polling.
C. People do not die from wounds inflicted by “not having insurance”. That is a fallacy and logically invalid.
D. Ok, we will.
E. Ok, we will. Nice passive agressive threat by the way. Are you a psychic?
F. Agreed, but for different reasons. If you stand for everything, you stand for nothing.
G. Thank you. I figured it out, you’re not psychic, you’re Jesus Christ. My KJV does not have any markers for the sermons about socialist healthcare. I must have skipped over those verses. I guess they’re not near the ones referencing killing children, people of the same sex laying together, laziness, etc. You know, most of the biblical messages that leftists ignore when they are preaching.
H. Another veiled threat? I have exposed myself for what I am. A conservative Christian who beleives in personal responsibilty, faith, hope, and charity. You got me (and most everyone else here as well).

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 9:55amcalijohn, get off the lib progressive rag. The conservatives are trying to undo the damage done by libs and progressives. The health care bill is anything but about health care. It is about control, and causing the rationing of HC which will hurt and kill more people than it supposedly is set up to help. The whole bill needs to be repealed. The only things needed to reform HC were
1) open up interstate competition between insurance companies (brings the price of insurance down and bring in more options)
2) tort reform. Getting rid of junk lawsuits will save doctors offices millions of dollars in mal practice insurance payments. Thus in effect, bringing down the cost of medical procedures and in turn bringing down the cost of insurance prices. Got the picture yet? I doubt it since you are a lib.
3) get rid of pre ex.
By the way the conservatives had all these things on the table when the idiot libs and progressives rammed the HC abortion down AMERICA’s throat. Hmm, imagine that.

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 12:57pmDo we have a Constitutional crises here? Both the President and the Senate refuse to honor a Federal court rullingdeclaring this law unconstitutional. This sounds like an impeachable offense for the preseident. However, in order to move this along a lot faster than two years, the states involved need to get the judge to add injunctive relief, even though his order does not require it, By putting the law on indefinite hold, it will screw up the timing and prevent thecollection of taxes. If Obama want to get it back on tract they would have to push to move it directly to the Supreme Court. The arguments have been made at the lower level, so additional prep time is not required from eithe side and I’ll bet the states would be ready go next week if afforded the opportunity. Since Obama is ignoring the courts decision (contempt of court) maybe a permenant injunction would get his attention. He is arrogant to the point of stupidity. And he is supposed to be a constitutional lawyer? I wonder what constitution he studied?
