Senate May Take Up Repeal of ‘Defense of Marriage’ Act

Now that President Obama has out and out stated his support for gay marriage, lots of other Democratic officeholders are coming out of the closet as supportive of various planks in the gay rights agenda. The most recent such person to begin batting for that team is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who announced today that the Senate may take up a bill that would repeal the “Defense of Marriage Act” – one of the landmark pieces of legislation from the Clinton era, and a much loathed one among gay activists.

Politico brings the story:

A day after President Barack Obama endorsed gay marriage, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid suggested Thursday that Democrats may move to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the Clinton-era law that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Such a move would energize the liberal base and provide a contrast to House Republicans, who passed their own measure this week aimed at bolstering DOMA.

But it could also alienate conservative Democrats in the middle of an election year.

In any case, it would have no chance of getting through a divided Congress.

An important note: Reid is a Mormon, and agrees (at least in theory) with presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney that marriage is meant to be between a man and a woman. However, Reid also says in the linked article that if there’s a plank in the Democratic platform that supports gay marriage, he’ll support that, even though many of the moderates in his own caucus aren’t particularly happy with the idea of getting bogged down in this issue.

Given this, you have to wonder – is this pandering to the gay community as wise a political move as Obama (and Reid) really seem to think it is, or will it just show people like Reid up as hypocrites and alienate potential voters?

On some level, they must be worried and are possibly just trying to stuff through as much “garbage” as possible in case they lose. However, let’s hope their own egos and sense of invulnerability is what will do them in.

I get the feeling that this is a set up in an attempt to beat up the Republicans as the election draws near. It will never make it through the House. Just theatrics. But, who would have ever thought that democrats would ever attempt to overturn a bill signed by Lord Almighty on High Bubba Clinton.

This has got to be a loser for the Democrats. The morons in Hollywood are too rich to understand what real people are going through. They’re the ones who are out of touch, far more than Romney. I know an actor, a sane one, (won’t say his name, but you all know him) who told me about the other actors and actresses. He said that they’re mostly crazy… obsessed with themselves.
I met him and chatted with him knowing only his first name for days when I finally asked, “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” He laughed and told me the movies he was in. SHOCKED! I said, “Sorry, I’m not a big fan of Hollywood.” Then, he told me all about the insanity and snobbery of Hollywood’s most famous people.
He asked which actors seemed nice. I named a few and he said, “They’re good actors because everyone you named is really a creep.”
He said Eddie Murphy was nice and down-to-earth when he first started, but Hollywood changed him too. He thinks he‘s God’s gift to mankind now. Teri Garr, he said, is a complete bi$c#. It was very interesting to hear all his stories of the people I only knew from TV. Disappointing to learn that all my favorites were self-obsessed jerks.

It is interesting isn’t it. I hope that Harry Reid does bring it to the Senate floor for a vote. I have a feeling that this time many or enough of the Democratic Senators will cast their vote against Harry Reid. I think the bill will fail in the Senate and will never get to the Congress.

I think this action will backfire on Harry Reid. If not then that only confirms that the Democratic lead Senate is filled with nothing more than progressives. I am willing to take the chance though because I feel that enough Democratic Senators will reject this bill and that Harry Reid will fail.

      @Shiroi Raion

This is why I know longer go to movies nor watch new shows on the TV. I also remember having favorites of the past only to learn as their careers wind down to discover that they use their riches to destroy this country. Meaning that they donate to the candidates and use their influence to support the people that desire to turn this country into a socialist state.
      ——————————————————————
I am sure that there are one or two new actors or actresses that love this country and the principles that it was founded on but the vast majority do not.

I wish the entertainment would do just that and entertain us with their gifts and talent. They refuse to do that and let the money and riches that come from their fans be used to fund total destruction of America.

Therefore I have made a personal decision not to go to the movies nor watch any of the major network programming. I regret that choice but it was not made by me. It was made by the stars and starlettes that rub their fame in their fans faces.

I agree with both of you regarding Hollywood Actors playing politics with their new-found wealth.
SNL now and in the past also. Most late night talk shows too numerous to mention here.

I don’t support Hollywood by refusing to pay the price of a ticket to see a movie. I know it makes little difference considering the obsessed public willingly spending their hard earned dollars to sit in a crowded theatre and be brainwashed – literally.

TV programs offer a glimpse into the corrupt mindset of the writers and the producers who really control the dialogue. I am usually offended and don’t need to watch more than a few minutes to confirm my disgust.

Cartoons like South Park and the Simpson’s are another story. Sometimes they mock the Liberal agenda but in the long run, I feel the average American is not educated sufficiently to understand the subtleties(sometimes blatantly) being foisted upon them.

My question is; “Do the stars that end up selling their souls for the monetary wealth and notoriety, realize that is exactly what they are doing?”

Come on people I know your all smarter than this. From here on out the only thing that matters is keeping the American public from talking about the Presidents record. Anything that will tie up print space, take up air time or bandwidth will suddenly be the most important issue of our time. When the topic doesn’t cause a fire storm suddenly there will be something else to causes a diversion. Defense of marriage is important to the well being of our country but let’s keep the focus on the dismal record of our President. Remember the majority of us can keep focus, walk and chew gum at the same time, however the bulk of today’s society can only keep focus until the next episode of Jerry Springer and then there back to quoting the talking points.
One other quick point, although there are some clever jabs and insults made when referring to the President please keep you post respectful related to him. None of us like him however, the great comments and points made are often negated when read by someone who may be a modest supporter of his or on the fence because of the insult. Although it great to get those one liners out for us all to see it is more important right now to get information and facts out to those who might be thinking of voting for him.
    Cheers,
May God Save and Bless our Nation

I taught my children that lying is wrong, and I don’t have to respect anyone that routinely lies as a matter of course and self-advancement. I respect the office. It‘s Obama that doesn’t. I swore to support and defend the Constitution. Obama is trying to destroy it, and I consider him an enemy of the Constitution and the United States. He’s a traitor, and should be impeached. So, I have no guilt over calling him a lying POS. Is there a single tradition that these progressive perverts, and sicko‘s won’t destroy? As for Harry, doesn’t he have better things to do than overturn the will of the people in 38 states. We‘re on the edge of hell and he’s pushing. I’m litterally sickened by these soulless heathens. If Occupy wants to toss malotov cocktails, Reid and Obama are at least guilty of something. Fundemental transformation. I didn‘t know that meant saluting flags with Obama’s face where the stars belong, but apparently Reid did. Before you call me a homophobe, I’m for civil unions. In a way I would like for Harry Reid to bring this bill to the floor of the Senate for a vote. In earlier times every Senator would vote lock and step for anything that Harry Reid presented to them. I would like to see if that would happen on this bill.

I think it would fail the Senate this time and never make it to Congress. If every Democratic Senator supported this bill then it would only confirm my suspicions though. That the Democratic Party has been completely taken over by progressives or what ever name use choose to use. Meaning there are no such thing as a blue collar democrat in the Senate.

What life long Democrats do not understand is that the Democratic Party has been hijacked by the communist party and that a lot of old blue collar democrats have switched to the Republican Party.

Thus the Tea Party is attempting to purge those from the Republican Party. Who is trying to purge the communist from the Democratic Party. Apparently no one.

Guess what? This is the typical ploy being used by the Democrats and the Main Stream Media. I think it can be defined as a distraction. Deflect the current disastorous administrations failings onto mundane issues.

If you can keep the discussions on foolish issues then the real issues will be over looked. Haven’t you noticed that the liberal press will ask a mundane question to a Republican Politician and no matter how it is answered they will go with it for as long as they can.

Keep the focus off the economy, the divisiveness that is being created by this administration, the administrative policies that are being re-written and so on.

I agree there needs to be an enforcement policy put in place that mandates that a budget has to be put forth each and every year. There has been no budget since this administration has taken over.

I don’t think anyone has forgotten about the economy. What we know is that the economy is a direct result of our moral situation in this company. The economy can’t be fixed by throwing more money at this or that. The economy is only going to get better when the hearts and minds of the American people are changed for the better. When you have an ‘unlimited’ credit card in the middle of a big store, the only thing going to stop you from ruining your life is what is in your moral integrity on the inside. When the heart of America gets better, then so will the economy. Thus the important of moral issues in the election. Without a change of heart, any thing we do for the economy is only a band-aid.

My sister is a gay Christian Republican and homosexual love is NOT A SIN. I am sure I could win a debate with you as I am sure I have studied this issue and read more versions of the Bible than you and understand them better. For example, do you know homosexual wasn’t a word until 1869? Do you know the King James Bible was translated by 47 translators just one of the times? Do you know that gay rights are the most schismatic issue for the church since slavery and abolition in the 19th century? Do you know pork, two types of clothing, and women in church positions where all things written in the Bible for that time in culture, just as the word homosexual was added to the Bible in the 1800s? Do you know a recent study of 18 – 24 year olds were asked what 3 words or phrases came to mind when they heard the word Christian? The answers were: close-minded, hypocrite, and anti-gay. All of you stubbornly unreceptive people who are not ready for change need to HURRY UP AND LEARN if you want your children to be Christian. I already sent in my contribution to Freedom Works for this campaign. I think it is to help bring to the Senate a Republican Majority which means that Harry Reid will no longer be the majority leader.

I think it will be hard to fire him completely when you have the voting booths in Nevada controlled by SEIU.

Hopefully when he finishes his current 6 year term maybe he will just go away.

Anyone who supports homosexual “marriage” and claims to be be a Christian was never converted to Christ, or they have blasphemed the Holy Spirit. God’s Word leaves no room to compromise or speculate on the sanctity of marriage or on the sinfulness of homosexuality.

Put your sword back in the sheath cowboy. Judgement is reserved for God(John 3:17&18). Shouldn’t your focus be on reaching people and not pronouncing condemnation? However, if you want to cast blame around take a look at II Chronicles 7:13-14 and ask yourself “what happens to a nation where GOD’S PEOPLE refuse?” Now take a look around you and ask who is to blame.
