Senate Votes to Table House Debt Bill Without Even Debating on its Merits

Senate Votes to Table Republican Boehner House Debt Bill 59 to 41Friday night the Senate voted to table House Speaker Boehner’s debt bill 59 to 41.

This does not mean that the bill has died, but has rather been put aside to be used by Majority Leader Harry Reid as the underlying vehicle from which he will draft a counter-plan. The Reid plan will then be submitted back to the House.

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — In an unforgiving display of partisanship, the House passed emergency legislation Friday night to avoid an unprecedented government default and the Senate scuttled it less than two hours later.

The final outcome – with the White House and Senate Democrats calling anew for compromise while criticizing Republicans as Tuesday’s deadline drew near – was anything but certain.

“We are almost out of time” for a compromise, warned President Barack Obama as U.S. financial markets trembled at the prospect of economic chaos next week.

The House vote was 218-210, almost entirely along party lines, on a Republican-drafted bill to provide a quick $900 billion increase in U.S. borrowing authority – essential to allow the government to continue paying all its bills – along with $917 billion in cuts from federal spending.

It was rewritten hastily overnight to say that before any additional increase in the debt limit could take place, Congress must approve a balanced budget-amendment to the Constitution and send it to the states for ratification. That marked a concession to tea party-backed conservatives and others in the rank and file who had thwarted House Speaker John Boehner’s attempt to pass the bill Thursday night.

“Today we have a chance to end this debt limit crisis,” Boehner declared, his endgame strategy upended by rebels within his own party.

But the changes he made to the House GOP bill further alienated Democrats. And they complicated prospects of a compromise that could clear both houses and win Obama‘s signature by next Tuesday’s deadline.

At the other end of the Capitol, Senate Democrats scuttled the measure without so much as a debate on its merits. The vote was 59-41, with all Democrats, two independents and six Republicans joining in opposition.

Below is a video of the follow-up press conference held by Senate Democrats Harry Reid, Dick Durbin and Chuck Schumer. Watch as Reid’s phone goes off during his remarks:

Here is the easiest and best debt solution yet. Naturally it’s by Ron Paul. It’s an ingenious temporary fix.[1]

Short sighted politicians, the exception being Paul, don’t dare admit, let alone discuss solving the most heinous danger plaguing America from it’s inception, usury foreign banking! Now embodied by the Federal Reserve, this usury private banking cartel has effectively enslaved America.[2]

The house passed the bill today, to be tabled by the Senate and the Pres. So you know what!!! Three strikes and you’re out!!! I do not think the congress should give them anything else. Just tell the Senate and the Pres. you have 3 choices that we have submitted. You have none!!! Pick one or shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop compromizing. Enough is enough!!!!! DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVES!!!!!!!!!! Tell them it is one or the other and stop the COMPROMISE with the ghost alternative that the Pres. supposedly has. You’re telling me that my children and your children are going to have to slave for decades to earn $1.6 trillion to “pay back” a private banking cartel whose stockholders are the nation’s best-kept secret, and all because you’re worried about possibly causing “liquidity problems for banks for low excess reserves” or the Fed “los[ing] some flexibility in managing the money supply”?

the fed will eat your children before they let go of that debt

that’s why they ran up the debt in the 1st place

All the talk now is that Reid will change the bill. Add extending the debt limit so it passes 2013, possibly change any reductions in spending, possible tax increase. Then pass it with a democratic senate send it back to the house, where all the democrats will need to pass it is 218. There are 193 democrats, so all they will need is 25 RINO’s to pass it and we are shafted again. Not looking good.

The purpose of a rise in the debt ceiling is to just pay the bills for the money has been already spent for the most part by most of the current members of congress! Future spending is a budget matter that has absolutely nothing to do with the mechanics of the debt ceiling.

Tying budget matters to the debt ceiling was a dangerous gimmick by the Republicans to try and force a political agenda by putting the financial integrity and credit worthiness of the United States at risk. In other words, let’s gamble with financial health of the country so we can get what we want. How patriotic is that?

No surprise. I said they would do that before the bill was even passed. Democrats have become extremely predictable. Gimme mo’ money, yo! They don‘t care about doing what’s right, just how much they can steal from the taxpayers. Ever talk to Liberals in person? They are absolutely clueless! The ones I know have no idea who the speaker of the house is and most can’t even name the vice president or our senators. All they do is blindly press [D] and blurt out the same nonsensical catch phrases and hypocrisies. Basically, all arguments have to the same 2 endings: “If you disagree, you must be a racist,“ and ”I hate politics, don’t talk about that.” Idiots. This county voted for Obama and we have about 1.4% blacks in this district, now suddenly everyone‘s a racist because they didn’t like what they got? and “Vote Democrat because that‘s the ’in-thing’ to do.” Idiots.

      Wrong, tommee…
The ISSUE is our credit RATING. If our AAA rating is lowered, interest rates will go up (chinese will charge us more to borrow) which means banks will pay more to borrow which means YOU will pay more and the FARMER will pay more and the GAS STATION will pay more & the GROCERY will pay more. This mean EVERYTING will go up in price… EVERYTHING EXCEPT YOUR INCOME!!!

That credit RATING is DECLARED by Moody’s and by S&P, who have BOTH said, the ONLY way they will not lower our rating is, if we 1) CUT 4 TRILLION IN REAL SPENDING, &, 2) raise our debt ceiling. ANYTHING LESS & we WILL lose our credit rating, & begin spiraling into INFLATION.

Right now, NEITHER party is CUTTING 4 TRILLION, so I don’t know how we are gonna avoid INFLATION.

The dems want to jack up taxes which they KNOW is ridiculous during a stalled economy – that is why they won’t call it what it is, “TAXES”, they have to call it “revenues”. It is ridiculous because, only the rich have the ABILITY to create jobs, & we NEED jobs. The rich need MONEY to create jobs with. They aren’t doing it right now, because Obama keeps changing business rules, & NO-ONE will invest hard earned money unless they KNOW the rules.

So, we HAVE to CUT BIG! (4TRILLION)
We HAVE to increase the debt limit.

      Otherwise, we get inflation.

Is it RIGHT that Moody’s and S&P get to dictate this? NO. But, that is how it works.

REAL answer is NEVER again spend so much this becomes an issue!

Hey TOMFERRARI… Nice spiel, but it’s inaccurate. Moody’s and S&P are threatening to downgrade the credit rating of the United States if it defaults on paying current outstanding bills, not because of the long term debt. Their primary concern is that investors get their promised returns. Longer term budget and debt issues are not on the hot seat. It’s like a cancer patient going to emerge with a gunshot wound. Is there any question what should be treated first?

Never before in history has the budget been tied to raising the debt limit. The United States by the way, is the only developed country in the world with a debt ceiling that must be raised on a regular basis, and it must be done. As the GDP and wealth of a nation grows, it makes no sense to put artificial caps on spending. Can you imagine a 1920‘s debt ceiling cap in today’s world of 2011? The debt limit in 1940 was $44.1 billion. Such a cap would be absurd.

Don’t get me wrong. Long term debt and budget issues are indeed a problem. But they should not be solved while a gun is pointed at the head of the financial integrity of the United States of America.

The current so called crises can be solved in a few minutes by issuing a one line bill that says the limit will be increased. After that happens, Congress can get back to the business of governing and truly solving the long term debt problem.

I agree with all you guys. It this were a poker game (which it is, actually), Boehner’s best move now would be to say “I sit.”

When I was young, I learned the hymn A Mighty Fortress is our God. I learned a version that seems a bit different than tradition, but here is the last part of the first verse as I learned it..

“The Old Familiar Foe / doth seek to work us woe / great guile and cruel might / are his dread arms in fight / on Earth is not his equal.”

The Old Familar Foe has its fingers on the throat of our government. Only God can help us, as we alone are not strong enough to defeat it. We must stand together, on His side, behind our never failing bulwark, for our country and for freedom.

The Democrats are playing with fire. They lost badly in 2010 for a reason, and it doesn’t matter if those reasons are not playing on the formerly relevant media. You can’t fool all the people forever, and you can’t fool most of them for long, not to this extent. Obama is not even remotely a Fabian: he is a straight out Socialist. Hillary would not be having these problems: we should all be glad the hard left chose to shoot itself in the foot with this candidate.

We’ll have the Senate and White House soon enough. We need to pass some stupid bill now, because Obama is reckless enough to veto anything that isn’t stupid. 2013 we clean house, and start the real work.

Define “isn’t stupid” please. Obama prefers to have this gridlock so he can once again subvert the Constitution and tell Geitner to raise the debt ceiling himself. I truly believe in his deluded way of thinking he thinks he will look like a hero if he does it.

As I understand the matter, we are set to increase our national indebtedness–barring some large economic catastrophe, which will make matters worse–some 7-10 trillion dollars over the next decade, or roughly 1 trillion per year. Logically, this means we need to be discussing trillion dollar per year spending cuts, and/or corresponding tax increases. Tax increases do work up to a point, and should not be taken finally off the table, but the simple reality is that Obama has increased spending grotesquely, and is now asking taxpayers to foot a bill which has not benefited most of them in the slightest. That is unfair, and stupid.

None of the proposals on the table come with a mile of approaching the level needed for fiscal sanity. None of them. Not even Ryan’s, which balances the ANNUAL budget, in my understanding, in 25 years, and therefore does nothing to pay down our actual debt until the year after that. And even his plan draws the ire of Democrats. Even that.

No matter what passes it will therefore be stupid. Our nation–led in its opinions by idiots, hacks, and cynics–largely has not begun to grasp the full depth of the lunacy that has been gripping this nation for the better part of a century.

What Boehner is doing is a good beginning. He has lit the fire, and people are, I hope, actually studying our situation, and to the extent accurate information is made available to them, drawing reasonable–I would argue necessary–conclusions.

he will draft a counter-proposal to be submitted back to the House.

let me say it in honest words…

He will draft a tax increase that has tax increases, and with the tax increases, will increase spending, by tax increases, that the DNC will cheer, for, since there is a tax increase, and they will keep spending……..nothing changes….where is your “compromise” you so loudly proclained in 2007 when you took control…
