Senator Promises to Filibuster Controversial Website Censorship Bill

The Protect IP Act, which is the Senate‘s version of the House’s Stop Online Piracy Act, is ruffling the feathers of Internet entrepreneurs and Internet freedom advocacy groups some Senate members are fighting against it as well.

In fact according to Wired, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) has threatened to filibuster the PIPA should it reach the Senate floor for a vote. Wyden has already delayed the bill with a hold, which Wired says is a rarely used Senate rule that blocks a measure from a floor vote, but he fears a vote could be planned for after Thanksgiving to overthrow the hold.

Wyden’s spokesperson at StopCensorship.org said Wyden plans to read the names of all citizens opposed to the act. And, in the following video he encourages those opposed to “make sure your concerns are heard”:

Wired has more:

When Wyden blocked the bill, he said: “By ceding control of the Internet to corporations through a private right of action, and to government agencies that do not sufficiently understand and value the Internet, PIPA represents a threat to our economic future and to our international objectives.”

The measures also boost the government’s authority to disrupt and shutter websites that hawk or host trademark- and copyright-infringing products, including allowing the government to order sites removed from search engines. They allow the Justice Department to obtain court orders demanding American ISPs to blacklist websites via DNS. That’s a feature even the bill’s main House backer conceded Wednesday was problematic for a host of reasons, including it being a threat to a secure and uniform Internet.

SOPA, the House version of PIPA, had its first hearing last week where the two sides — those in favor of enacting a law to protect intellectual property and those who fear such a law would be abused leading to Internet censorship — presented their cases before the Judiciary Committee.

Don’t pattens for inventions have a sunset, do copyrights have this, I’m not sure. If not, then, they should. Can‘t they make enough money in one year off of their ’intellectual material’ to suffice? I think after one year, these people should be able to create more of this to support themselves and then some. Of course, I realize that this is all just a sneaky way to package a law that will place the american people one step closer to the hell suffered by the people of the prison state of North Korea, for one example. I just can’t believe the tactics of these people! Infernal! The devil hinself must be proud right now.

The internet is the one place that is still virtually free. One thing is certain, if the feds get their hands on it we’re done. This is all in the name of protecting copyrights, trademarks and such. The freedom to have an idea, crank up the computer, setup a website to promote that idea will come to a screeching halt with this legislation. This will stifle creativity and free speech. Leave it alone!!!

I work in the Internet. What Wyden is doing is protecting the rights of people who live and work online and use the net to share their content.

Anytime you see the word ‘protect’ in a bill you can bet we’re gonna lose some protections. Anytime you see the word ‘privacy’ in a bill you can bet we’re gonna lose some privacy.

That would explain the title of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”).

Don’t know about Republicans, but Libertarians are in. At least this one is.

I can‘t believe it’s coming from a Democrat, but I’m thankful someone is. I would hope Rand Paul and others support him.

Even if they tried it wouldn’t work. They might get a few people in trouble along the way but it’s about as enforceable as the no texting while driving laws.

For once I agree with a Democrat. For different reasons…but nonetheless the United States Federal Government should keep its filthy hands off the internet…and since they can’t even catch welfare frauds or illegal aliens…..the chances of the federal government taking over the internet are quite unlikely. I have a couple friends who live in China….the Chinese Government tries to rule the internet with an iron fist…..and it fails every time….my friends have HBO and complete Google access and the Chinese Government can’t do a thing about it. Ummm like Uncle Sam thinks he can behave more forcefully than the Chicom’s? Please….. take a breath Uncle Sam…this internet thing is WAY WAY bigger than even you. Just ask Al Gore…he invented it. LOLOLOLOL What a crock of crap….

Yes, sir I will. I don’t see where you are coming from? I mean his highness Obanana, had talked earlier this year about the internet (this was prior to the Elections), when he had all Demos to his beck-and-call. I don’t believe in losing anymore LIBERTIES and FREDOMS that have been lost by this one man. What will be next, our books, libraries, movies, televisions? that would be like when the Nazis took control of Germany! This man wants so much to be a Dictator, a Controller! And, the sad thing is we’re all allowing him to do it!!!!
