Senator’s Shock Fantasy: FCC Tells Fox News & MSNBC ‘Out…Off…End…Goodbye.’

Sen. Rockefeller’s shared some thoughts that were not in his prepared remarks today. The West Virginia Democrat gave a mini-lecture on communications and journalism during a Senate hearing on retransmission consent:
Mr. Rockefeller spoke broadly about the ways he believes television is ailing, and in doing so he singled out the “endless barking” of cable news.
He said: “There’s a little bug inside of me which wants to get the F.C.C. to say to Fox and to MSNBC, ‘Out. Off. End. Goodbye.’ It would be a big favor to political discourse; to our ability to do our work here in Congress; and to the American people, to be able to talk with each other and have some faith in their government and, more importantly, in their future.”
There is little the Federal Communications Commission can say about Fox News or MSNBC since the channels are on cable, not delivered over the broadcast airwaves.
Additional transcript from The New York Times:
When it comes to developing content, our entertainment machine is too often in a race to the bottom. Even worse, our news media has all but surrendered to the forces of entertainment. Instead of a watchdog that is a check on the excesses of government and business, we have the endless barking of a 24-hour news cycle. We have journalism that is always ravenous for the next rumor, but insufficiently hungry for the facts that can nourish our democracy. As citizens, we are paying a price.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 10:10pmI‘m sure he only added MSNBC so he wouldn’t look partisan in his attack – the simple truth is FOX does better than CNN and MSNBC not because it is more balanced in its coverage. Yes, it is conservative but overall the news portion of FOX is fair and balanced – giving view points from both the left and right far more equally than any of the other news channels. To even compare it to MSNBC is ludicrous – just look at the election coverage – FOX had on news anchors covering the election with panels of both left and right viewpoints. MSNBC had on 5 liberals snickering and mocking republicans all night. I am sick of politicians trying to shut down FOX because finally there is a conservative voice in the liberal wilderness of network news.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 1:50amActually they are the ones that are in trouble. I am reminded of a quote from the Battle of the Buldge:
“Sir, they enemy has us surrounded!”
“Good, we can fight them on all sides!”
Here are the facts. We out number the commies. We control the trades. We are the economic backbone of the world. We are armed. And the number one fact: We are Americans. We are responsible for the freedom that has been spread throughout the world and we are responsible for protecting and expanding that freedom. We are obligated to protect our Constitution. Our Declaration Of Independance calls for us to defend our freedom by whatever means necessary. Freedom is a gift from GOD. HE is on our side because we are on HIS side when we are defending freedom. That is what has made America the greatest and most powerful nation on Earth. We are blessed to have this opportunity to stand up and preserve freedom for future generations. We will go down in history as the greatest generation to have ever lived and died for freedom. We are all scared. Embrace that fear and let it be your motivation to do great things for your Country, your family, and your GOD. Look deep inside yourself in that place where Jesus lives inside of you. In that place is a peace that will always be there, even in the worst of all situations.
Prepare yourself for battle. These commies/socialists/union thugs will get violent and we will be ready when they do.
Read your Bible and pay attention to what Jesus tells us in the Gospels. Read Daniel chapters 8-11. Read Exodus and Joshua. The answers as to what to do are in the Bible… just read it and prepare. The enemies of GOD can’t comprehend what the Bible is saying because GOD blocks their understanding. HE is pouring out revelation to his people, through HIS word, in a way that is unique to our generation. Read it and learn what Jesus is telling you.
Shabat Shalom

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 10:12pmHere is a part of an article I find interesting, I posted it earlier today about an article found in the yahoo news articles.
They warned that industries are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the so-called Stuxnet worm as they merge networks and computer systems to increase efficiency. The growing danger, said lawmakers, makes it imperative that Congress move on legislation that would expand government controls and set requirements to make systems safer.
Now this congressman is wishing the FCC to get rid of MSNBC and FOX, after this came out about the potential problems coming over the internet.
Coincidence?

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 12:10amQuelling freedom of speech should not be taken lightly. Once it is gone, imagine how hard it would be for anyone to get back. How would we get information from the outside of our walls, communities, counties, states, and national borders? Might not be a bad idea to invest in old retired television equipment and having older tv sets that can still receive the signals. Short wave radios are excellent idea as well. The internet regulations are what they truly want first, however for so many reasons. Yeah, they could tax emails, all purchases made, no more skype or vonage without giving big brother his regulatory dues… etc. Communication of current and relevant information is paramount to the success of any movement and they know it. Without oen access to the internet, the Tea Party would not have near the effect it does on new members growing its size letting us all see that there indeed are other people out there who think the way we do. It would be much harder to organize anything now that we rely heavily on this medium. Communication is everything and no side of the political spectrum should be for ending free speech. They were certainly pro free speech as long as it was saying what they think themselves. This guy wasn’t scared to throw msnbc under the bus likely because he is jealous of Gates or because it is such a failure in everything it does. Can’t hurt a network whose ratings cannot get any worse. If he would have tossed in the Huffington Post and Comedy Central, MTV, might have been more convincing he wasn’t targeting Fox but just msnbc means he is throwing them under the bus. We cannot tolerate this moron’s intentions. He has a pulpit and free speech and would take the same thing away from Glenn Beck.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 10:06amThere are few things in this country that the govt and govt influence have actually made better despite what Foot-in-my-Mouth Biden said. I guess they could tout dependency on the government as their primary shining example followed by corruption and inefficiency. To have faith in someone or something, you have to have trust. Unfortunately, the government has lost the trust of the majority of Americans and trust, once lost, is a very hard thing to regain.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 11:28amThe following is an email I received from Rockefeller’s office almost a year after I emailed him about the Cap & tax and Obamacare bills:
“Dear Richard,
Thank you for contacting me regarding my efforts to respond to recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) findings on greenhouse gas emissions. I always enjoy hearing from a fellow West Virginian, and I welcome the opportunity to be in touch.
I have long maintained that Congress, and not the EPA, must decide major economic and energy policy. It is well established that greenhouse gas emissions are not healthy for the earth or her people and we must take action to reduce them; however, EPA is not the right decision maker since they have little or no authority to address economic needs or deploy new technologies, or protect the hardworking people of West Virginia. At a time when so many people are hurting, we need to put decisions about clean coal and our energy future into the hands of the people and their elected representatives, not a federal environmental agency.
The EPA became involved in regulating greenhouse gases in 2007 after the Supreme Court ruled in the case Massachusetts v. EPA, that greenhouse gasses could be considered air pollutants covered under by the Clean Air Act. The ruling permitted EPA to determine whether or not emissions of greenhouse gases cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare. Under this ruling EPA has the obligation to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from stationary sources under the Clean Air Act’s prevention of significant deteriorations provisions related to existing operating permit programs.
On December 7, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized its findings under the Clean Air Act that concentrations of six greenhouse gases in the atmosphere threaten public health. Under this “endangerment finding” the Clean Air Act could be used by the EPA to regulate a host of greenhouse gas emission sources ranging from motor vehicles to coal-burning power plants to factories and oil refineries.
These findings could significantly impact American workers and businesses in a number of industrial sectors by permitting the EPA to implement regulations curtailing pollution from stationary sources. This could have wide ranging effects on farmers, miners, and small business owners throughout West Virginia. Large electric generators using domestically produced coal and natural gas could also be affected if new Best Available Control Technology or BACT standards for carbon dioxide are required.
In February 2010 I, along with several of my colleagues sent a letter to EPA Administrator Jackson requesting that EPA clarify the timetable for implementation and suspend EPA regulations for industrial facilities so that Congress, not EPA, can address comprehensive energy policies. While the EPA responded in timely manner, the agency did not support delaying regulation under the endangerment finding.
This is why I introduced the Stationary Source Regulations Delay Act (S. 3072). This legislation would prohibit the EPA from regulating carbon dioxide or methane from stationary sources under the Clean Air Act for two years. My legislation would remove the immediate threat of EPA action and give Congress the time to design and adequately consider well thought out energy legislation including clean coal. While this legislation has not yet come before the full Senate, I am continuing to push for a vote on it this year.
Additionally, Senator Murkowski of Alaska introduced a resolution (S.J. Res. 26) disapproving of the EPA’s finding. This resolution would have nullified the EPA’s endangerment finding that declares greenhouse gases as pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Like my legislation, the Murkowski resolution would remove the threat of EPA action and create an atmosphere in which Congress could carefully consider legislation addressing greenhouse gas emissions. On June 10, 2010, I voted in support of Senator Murkowski’s Resolution of Disapproval in order to send a strong and urgent message that the fate of our economy, our manufacturing industries, and our workers should not placed solely in the hands of the EPA. Unfortunately, this resolution ultimately failed in the Senate by a vote of 47-53.
I will continue to fight for clean coal and for West Virginia by working to secure a vote on my legislation before the Senate. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts on this issue. As always, I wish you the best.
With Warm Regards,
Jay Rockefeller ”
You will notice the complete lack of response on Obamacare and the response on the other subject was about the EPA regulating co2 emissions and not completely on the target of my letter to him. In contrast I CCed the email to my Congressional Rep Shelley Moore-Capito (R) and not only did I get a timely response from her but it was in the form of a hand written and signed letter which covered her stance on both topics. I‘d post a copy of the letter but sadly my wife appears to have thrown it in the trash as I can’t find it.

I believe that what they are trying to do is stop our ability to get accurate and pertinent information on ANY news they choose for us not to get by quelling free speech and allow fair media coverage. All along, if they have been able to control what communication the masses have, they have believed they could control the masses. Take away their first, second, and so forth, amendment rights one at a time, starting with speech, and they will not even know they have lost the rest after speech. Sure there will be underground communication but nothing like we have now if they have their way. You can bet they monitor everything they can, as well.
