Sensitivity Training? Female U.S. Soldiers in Afghanistan ‘Encouraged’ to Wear Hijab

Female U.S. soldiers are being “encouraged” to wear headscarves in Afghanistan in an effort to get closer to the locals, according to The Daily Caller.
Major Kyndra Rotunda, the executive director of the Military Law and Policy Institute, says that being “encouraged” to do something in the military is tantamount to being “ordered” to do it, putting the servicewomen in a touchy situation.
The Daily Caller reports:
In an effort to get closer to the local population, American female soldiers stationed in Afghanistan are being encouraged to wear a Muslim headscarf when interacting with civilians. But some question whether the practice constitutes cultural sensitivity or a form of appeasement that is degrading to U.S. soldiers.
Major Kyndra Rotunda, executive director of the Military Law and Policy Institute and AMVETS Legal Clinic, told The Daily Caller that while the women are not being ordered to wear the head scarf, encouragement is tantamount to a demand.
“They say they are encouraging women to wear the headscarf when they are out and about and on patrol. But the problem is — and I think anyone who has been in the military understands that being encouraged to do something is about the same thing as being ordered — it really puts them in an uncomfortable position when their commander says, ‘We really want you to do this, technically you don’t have to, but we really want you to do this,’” she said.
Lt. Col. Michael Lawhorn, a U.S. Central Command spokesman, stressed to TheDC that while commanders are encouraging American women to wear headscarves while engaging with civilians, they are not having them wear the headscarf in lieu of their kevlar helmets.

The idea of American females wearing the scarf is not that big of a deal, although it should be mission dependent based on soldier interaction with the local populace and what the current threat within that AOR is.
Anyone who thinks otherwise has never worn a Kevlar helmet in 120 degrees, most SpecOps wear the local scarf, and it’s functional.

But to disregard the extra danger that they will suffer because of the Muslim savages’ hatred for women, this is inexcusable. We have seen how muslims treat women in conflict. We see how they treat any women who isn’t in her “proper place’ They see them as fit objects of rape and abuse. These barbarians have a twisted sense of honor that NEVER applies toward treating women with decency. It’s just the reverse.
Now on top of that threat we are forcing them to be less safe and not use helmets so that the sight of them won’t drive these animals into rages? If it is a practical matter that women soldiers make the situation there more difficult then they shouldn‘t be there if we aren’t going to agressively deal with the REAL problem.
This solution sucks on ice. What better way to tell the Muslim world, “Look at us. We’re infidels AND cowards. Please make more demands because we’ll fold like a cheap suit”

Obviously the obvious is not to apparent to you. Did you look at the photo at the top of the article? Notice what they are wearing? They are wearing full ACU’s with vest, M-4, and a full compliment of ammunition! Do you honestly think a hijab is going to make them blend in? If you do then you are a bigger moron then I give you credit for. These soldiers have battle dress uniform for a reason, it should be no different for the women!

Even when I was their in Afghanistan in 2008, I grew a beard to gain trust and speak with the elders of the surrounding tribes, I ate the food, when something went wrong we ask forgiveness and gave offering to the to maintain good relationships with the locals in the region. Women in the Marine Corps Lioness program wear hijabs and berkas to gain trust from the women, it’s called adapting to our environments, but if you rather us drop a bunch of bombs like we did in WW2 or Korea, then that’s your opinion, but then again it’s probably not good to do something like that, cause this isn’t a conventional war if you have forgotten, and we need to respect their culture for them to give us the information, you deny their customs, they deny you the intel to win, it’s as simple as that.”

Either way, not many women go out on patrols. A handful maybe as terps but most terps are middle eastern, from what I’ve seen. It was rare to get a female terp and there‘s no reason for a female to go on a patrol unless she’s a terp. Only ones I’ve seen have a female terp were SF guys. Well I suppose come to think of it they had a second female solder with them to check the females. We never took females with us to the villages, if you’re doing a KLE, no women would participate in it.
Guarantee the picture in this article isn’t from an actual patrol. No way, regardless of the “sensitivity” aspect of this, they wouldn’t let the soldiers out without a helmet. Even the SF and SEAL guys wear helmets outside the FOB.

They are wearing full ACU’s with vest, M-4, and a full compliment of ammunition! Do you honestly think a hijab is going to make them blend in? I see no need to “muslimize” our female soldiers by forcing them to wear a muslim headscarf so they will be more acceptable to the locals. If they happen to be muslims and voluntarially want to wear the habib, then that should be allowed. However, a female soldier that‘s not a muslim shouldn’t be “encouraged” to wear it since it’s not a part of the regulation uniform.
Our military personel are Americans and should not be “encouraged” or “coerced” to wear the traditional muslim “habib” as part of the American uniform. Enough is enough with the political correctness and appeasement of the locals. Who came up with this stupid idea, after 10 years

We wore blankets smeared with camel dung and other wonderful smelling material. It was not to make friends and influence the hearts and minds of the local nationals. It was to get in close to get information, provide fire direction, and to be accurate in our own fire. A female soldier in full body armor and weapon on patrol (?) wearing a scarf while her “brothers” wear helmets is a travesty. It makes me sick and if I were their commander I would order her to report in uniform – full combat uniform, and that includes a helmet.
