Serena Williams’ Words Get Ugly in Loss at U.S. Open

Already being outplayed by Sam Stosur in the U.S. Open final, the last thing Serena Williams needed was to lose a game for yelling during a point.
That’s exactly what happened early in the second set, leading to an argument between Williams and the chair umpire, a scene less ugly than – but reminiscent of – the American’s tirade two years ago at the same tournament. In the end, Stosur beat Williams 6-2, 6-3 Sunday in a surprisingly lopsided upset for her first Grand Slam title.
Hitting powerful strokes from the baseline, and looking fresher than the far-more-accomplished Williams right from the start, the ninth-seeded Stosur became the first Australian woman to win a major championship since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980.
Only 2-9 in tournament finals before beating Williams, Stosur made the U.S. Open the third consecutive Grand Slam tournament with a first-time women’s major champion, after Li Na at the French Open, and Petra Kvitova at Wimbledon.
“She played really, really well. I mean, I don‘t think she’s ever played that well,” Williams said. “Maybe she has; I haven’t seen her play that well.”
Indeed, the biggest victory of Stosur‘s career so far likely will be recalled by everyone else for Williams’ latest dispute with an official at Flushing Meadows.
Down a set and facing a break point in the first game of the second, the 13-time major champion hit a forehand and shouted, “Come on!” as Stosur reached down for a backhand. Chair umpire Eva Asderaki ruled that Williams hindered Stosur’s ability to complete the point and awarded it to Stosur – putting her ahead 1-0 in that set.
Williams went over to talk to Asderaki, saying, “I’m not giving her that game.”
Williams also said: “I promise you, that’s not cool. That’s totally not cool.”
Some fans began booing, delaying the start of the next game as both players waited for the commotion to subside.
Tournament director Brian Earley said Asderaki’s ruling was proper, according to U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier.
During the changeover two games later, Williams continued to talk to Asderaki, saying, “You’re out of control. … You’re a hater, and you’re just unattractive inside.”
“If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way,” it sounds like Williams threatens.
Williams also told the official: “Really, don’t even look at me.”
Asderaki issued a code violation warning for verbal abuse, and the Widmaier said Earley would speak to the chair umpire and review tape to determine whether Williams would be fined. That decision will be announced Monday.
At her news conference, Williams rolled her eyes while deflecting a question about whether she regretted what she said to Asderaki.
“I don’t even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there. … I guess I’ll see it on YouTube,” Williams said.
When Stosur wrapped up the match with a forehand winner, Williams refused the customary post-match handshake with the chair umpire.
This sort of thing has happened before at the U.S. Open to Williams, who won the tournament in 1999, 2002 and 2008.
In the 2009 semifinals against Kim Clijsters, Williams was called for a foot-fault that set her off on a profanity-laced outburst at a line judge. Williams lost a point there, and because it came on match point, Clijsters won.
That led to an immediate $10,000 fine from the U.S. Tennis Association and later a record $82,500 fine from Grand Slam committee director Bill Babcock, who also put Williams on a “probationary period” at Grand Slam tournaments in 2010 and 2011, saying that fine could wind up doubled.
A poor call during Williams’ 2004 U.S. Open quarterfinal loss to Jennifer Capriati was cited as a main reason for the introduction of replay technology in tennis.
The Associated Press contributed to this article.

Report Post »@Dr Funk I played sports in high school and college. The coaches and players used every curse word there is and some new ones they made up. But this isn’t a college hockey game It is the U.S. Open. Serena stopped being a professional and started demeaning and threatening an official over a call the official was correct about. This is women’s tennis but Serena looked and acted like a roid raging linebacker. Serena looks like Kimbo Slice with a wig. Has anyone ever done a package check.

You make some very valid points, concerning Serena. Others before her have done as bad, and worse. Not sure if there is a history of such language and behavior in womens tennis, but this has nothing to do with color or race.
What I think you do need to realize, is that much of America has just gotten sick and tired of the race card. We got All Gore telling us that it is racist if we do not believe in psuedo science concerning global warming. We have Chris Mathews, and most of the MSM telling us that the right does not like Obama because he is black (when he is only half black, and we love Alan West). We can not walk through the mall anymore, without throngs of nappy braided thugs with their pants down ,and butts showing. Just a walk through walmart parking lot with your kids may subject them to the BOOM BOOM BOOM car stereo, followed by M—– F—–er, Pimp, Bitch, Ho…… as the local thugs play vile music so loud it hurst your ears. We have Jessie Jackson and Sharpton rushing here and there making a buck off from every little event, but if ten black kids stomp a white kid on a bus, mum is the word, and no talk about hate crime.
Our schools are in a mess, because not only did we add evolution, get rid of prayer and the ten commandments, we also did away with discipline, and then bussed in the cross town heathen, and dropped the academic standards to the lowest common denominator, and we have dropped considerably in the word standings in math, scie

In Baltimore, the black vote is 90% for black candidates. I never hear any blacks talking about how racist their race is. I’m sure just as all Muslims are not terrorist, all Tea Party Members are not racists. Posted on September 12, 2011 at 7:17amI’m tired of the race card as well, just as I am tired of all the cards…religious, gender, ethnicity, etc. Nevertheless, my weariness to these ‘cards’ does not and should not prevent me or others from questioning the motives and outright hatred that is constantly being spewed from so-called tea partiers. I am a proud tea-party member that believes in less spending and efficient government, but when I see all the spewing racial hatred and sexist comments from other tea partiers, I question what this thing is really all about. I don‘t see why I can’t be proud of my party (and my country and my race, etc.) without hating everyone else. The truth is that bad people exist on all sides and within all designated races/parties/religions…should we just tolerate it within our own party and hate it everywhere else? I don’t pull the race card lightly, but it is so obvious on this site. Everyone thinks it’s okay to use slurs and be disrespectful, hiding behind their anonymity. If anyone from any other group read the daily posts on the blaze, they would rightly assume that the tea party is racist and sexist and worse….violent extremists. Therefore, when I comment, I am opposing this hijacking of my party. I am trying to absolve myself of this self-hating attribute that only gets worse when I read these intolerant comments. Just because there are bad people everywhere doesn’t mean you have to accept it…that‘s what i teach and that’s what I was taught.

Do yourself a quick study, and trace the roots of “multiculturalism” and see where it is based, and who is pushing it.
American is called the melting pot for a reason, we are a mix of a whole slew of cultures.
If you really boil it down, the “multicultural” crowd basically wants to shun anything that is white, european, judeo christian, and call it bad. In turn it wants to praise anything heathen, african, islamic, femenist, homosexual, native american…..
The goal is to destroy the current culture, and bring in the new socialist one world order. Take a close look at Europe. Those that did not partake in the evil slaughter of Jews, turned a blind eye to it. Following WWII they embraced multiculturalism and with open arms brought in the muslims. The muslims are now destroying european culture. 90% of rape in France is commited by islamic men, and is against non-muslim women. They do not mix with the current culture, but create enclaves ridden with crime. Multiculturalism is destroying europe.
The multicultural crowd wants to praise aspects of certain cultures, and gets their feelings hurt when you mention others. It loves anything from Africa, but if you talk about the ammount of genocide, slavery, or the barbarice surgery they do to young girls, it turns a blind eye.
Same goes on in our country. We want to praise everything black, but hush hush that every year around 10-15 black women are raped by white men, but 15,000 to 30,000 whi

If you try to debate libs in person, they usually try that whole talk louder thing, if that does not work, they try to gang up on you with a hord of stupid people all saying the same talking point.
On here, you lay down a trail of facts, and off they run.

I’d agree with your comment about Stosur, if I’d never played tennis at even a mildly competitive nature. Tennis players are trained NOT to hit the ball after a yell like Williams emitted, ESPECIALLY when it‘s not a part of their opponent’s normal playing style.
Having watched the match, I don’t believe that Serena was trying to hinder Stosur. Instead, she was upset at 1) her own play preceding that point, and 2) the placement of that particular shot. I would, personally, have rather seen the point be ruled a “let” and replayed, with a warning given to Williams.
That being said, Williams behaved VERY badly after the ruling. She was upset, but should have the ability to maintain her composure – ESPECIALLY at that level of competition!
Williams continued her bad behavior by snubbing the umpire after the match. I think, however, she was embarrassed on some level, as she was quite gracious to Stosur after the match was over.
*shrug* It’s sports.
