‘Serious Lapse’ of My Judgment and Ethics: Impostor Who Took Think Tank’s Global Warming Docs Revealed

  • The president and founder of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security admitted to posing as someone else to obtain documents from the free-market think tank, The Heartland Institute.
  • These documents leaked last week to journalists and bloggers revealed internal strategies and fundraising from the Institute.
  • Some believed these documents showed Heartland was supporting “climate denialism” — denying man-made global climate change. 
  • Heartland has said at least one document was completely forged; PI president denies falsifying information in any of the documents he obtained. 
  • Heartland is seeking legal council and says “a mere apology is not enough to undo the damage.”

Last week, a wealth of documents from the free-market think tank The Heartland Institute were leaked, revealing some of the organization’s strategy, funding and other private information. Heartland, in a statement soon thereafter, revealed that the information wasn’t hacked from its system but that someone had posed as a board member to obtain the documents from a Heartland employee. Some of the documents Heartland said were falsified.

Now, the person who lied to gain access the Institute’s internal documents has revealed himself, made a statement as to why he did it and apologized.

Peter Gleick, president and founder of the well-known Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security, has admitted to posing as someone else to receive documents. He also admitted to forwarding the information to journalists and others covering climate change.

The leak was used to show what some believed were Heartland’s leanings toward “climate denialism.” Proponents of man-made climate change have held that the institute was hindering “rational debate” on global warming and was receiving funding from stakeholders with similar beliefs.

Here’s what Gleick wrote in a statement on the Huffington Post:

At the beginning of 2012, I received an anonymous document in the mail describing what appeared to be details of the Heartland Institute’s climate program strategy. It contained information about their funders and the Institute’s apparent efforts to muddy public understanding about climate science and policy. I do not know the source of that original document but assumed it was sent to me because of my past exchanges with Heartland and because I was named in it.

Given the potential impact however, I attempted to confirm the accuracy of the information in this document. In an effort to do so, and in a serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name.

Gleick goes on to say that the additional documents confirmed what he had seen in the first but he maintains that he did not falsify information on anything from the organization. Last week in its statement on the leak, Heartland said that at least one document appeared to be completely forged and parts of other documents could have been tampered with as well. Gleick wrote:

I can explicitly confirm, as can the Heartland Institute, that the documents they emailed to me are identical to the documents that have been made public. I made no changes or alterations of any kind to any of the Heartland Institute documents or to the original anonymous communication.

“An additional document Gleick represented as coming from The Heartland Institute, a forged memo purporting to set out our strategies on global warming, has been extensively cited by newspapers and in news releases and articles posted on Web sites and blogs around the world. It has caused major and permanent damage to the reputations of The Heartland Institute and many of the scientists, policy experts, and organizations we work with.

“A mere apology is not enough to undo the damage.

“Gleick also claims he did not write the forged memo, but only stole the documents to confirm the content of the memo he received from an anonymous source. This too is unbelievable. Many independent commentators already have concluded the memo was most likely written by Gleick.

In its statement, Bast also tries to clear the claim that the Heartland doesn’t support open dialogue on the topic of man-made global climate change. Bast writes that the Institute has “repeatedly asked for real debate on the topic” and had even invited Gleick to a global warming debate, which he declined to attend.

Bast calls for Gleick to “make a more complete confession” and says that the Institute is consulting with legal experts on next steps.

Gleick ends his statement admitting that his “judgement was blinded by his frustration” over the attack on climate science and a “lack of transparency” by organizations he considers offenders of this attack. “Nevertheless I deeply regret my own actions in this case,” Gleick wrote. “I offer my personal apologies to all those affected.”

    The IPCC prefers to ignore too many relevant issues but wants to scare the world into acting before they know what they are doing. Their predictive models have all failed miserably. They ignore volcanic activity under the glaciers that are melting. The melting has been shown to be at lower levels rather than at the height that would signify their claims are accurate. They haven’t convinced me. Their predictions made 20 years ago can now be compared with reality and they aren’t panning out.

      In the 80′s Al Gore was predicting a new Ice Age for 2000 and beyond so we should believe who. Al Gore is just a rich scam artist. The amount of warming contributed by man-made means is really not as big as Big Al (Cappone) Gore refers to. Polar Bears are still alive in the Arctic North and Penguins still swim in the Antarctic Seas.

      The only thing Al Gore is good at is releasing a lot of hot air in small rooms of discontent of Progressives that believe their next Krona, Pound Sterling or Deutsch Mark comes from the United States. Their mission is to destroy the US Economy and reduce our standard of living so that they can create a new Country based on National Socialism.

We undergo aerosol spraying nearly daily and have for months! Many of us NOW suffer from asthma thanks to the barium and God only knows what else, they are disbursing in what can only be viewed as an attempt to COOL the air! Well, it it WORKING and it is really weird! It is disgusting! I have lived here for 40 years and have never seen anything like it!       If I remember correctly, what we had in the past was called an “Ice Age”. I am assuming that the “Ice Age” was an anomoly on an otherwise tropical planet. Hence, if the world is getting warmer, it is simply going back to its natural temperature, before the “Ice Age”.

    The Climate scheme is an angle that the Left is trying use as a way to advance Communism or Communal ism . The old strategies of workers of the world unite simply does not generate the kind of participation that they need to advance their agenda. I know leftists who continue to argue this even after most of their arguments have been debunked. They react the same way when facts get in the way of their arguments they get very angry and start name calling and threaten violence. If only they could con the world and eliminate their enemies and destroy what they don’t like about civilization.       I would offer some thought on this issue as I have debated other scientists on this very issue in a public manner. The politicians at the top are using Global warming as angle to gain more and more control over populations and exploit them for both profit and power. Many of the minions or “foot soldiers” are sincere believers. Terribly misguided and mistaken but sincere nonetheless. The problem is that the sincere person has an altered worldview in the sense that they see creation as Earth and nature centered and mankind as a sort of destructive parasite. They believe man and all his industrious activities are at the root of poverty, “inequality”, etc etc. However, this is a sad and misguided worldview because the Earth and nature are to support mankind. Now certainly we should be good stewards of what we have, but when you replace that which is created for Him who created it you have a messed starting place that essentially forms a new type of “religion” Mother Earth and the environment become the new god that is to be served complete with the sinfulness of man (harming nature) and a redemption theme based in globalism and collectivism all in the name of the greater good. There is the antithesis of what is considered good in the form of greedy banks, corporations, and the 1%. They also seek to aggressively proselytize new converts to their religion. They are in some cases also convinced that their cause rises above respect for others, current laws, or libert

    I will stop driving my SUV when he shows me (Gleick) in percentage of how much my SUV has had a negative effect on the climate as opposed to all the nuclear bomb testing across the world (US alone is over 500) – I would think that all the SUV’s on the planet to this point in time is considerable less than one bomb. Gleick wants Governments to “control” peoples private and corporate “climate change”, really? In addition, he has already shown himself to be untrustworthy, so why would ANYONE believe in ANYTHING he says – he LIED.

      After a cursory search, I’ve found no evidence that MT. St. Helen caused more Co2 emissions than all of humanity. It appears that the data shows otherwise. By what I’ve found, the volcanogest (sp?) show that all the volcanoes around the world add less than half what people do, however, I’ve not found what nuclear bombs contribute. It appears that a study either was not performed or is not available.

    One would consider offering irrefutable evidence [supporting man-made global climate change] to vent this frustration. One is left to wonder why Mr. Gleick did/could not present such evidence. I simply don’t buy his story nor accept his apology.

      The Greens worry about the wrong thing. They should actually be worried about reactor 4 in the Fukishima nuclear power plant. The radioactive material has eroded away about three-fourths of the reinforced cement floor.

      When the hot radioactive material mixes with the ground water, there will be a spectacular explosion. The containment will be destroyed in all four reactors and the explosions will continue until the radioactive material is mixed with ground water, air, land and the ocean.

      Tokyo may be contaminated and the radioactive isotopes will circulate in the Pacific. The coast of Alaska and the Pacific northwest are the home of the marine mammals. The fish will be contaminated as well as the animals that eat the fish. The isotopes stored in the body may not kill the animal outright but will reduce the fertility, cause excess cancers and generally reduce the health.

      If the Pacific breezes are just right, Al Gore may need to evacuate and condemn his $9 million beach front villa which is only 11 feet above sea level. In 2009, Al Gore predicted the oceans would rise by 67 meters in ten years.

    Since there “IS” no undeniable proof of Anthropogenic Global Warming I‘m willing to take the chance that AGW denial isn’t the big deal. I don‘t have to prove it doesn’t exist. YOU have to PROVE it does. So far, the “best hope” to do so was conspiratorial fraud. But that was let out of the Barn a few years ago.

      He all but admitted the forgery in his apology. HLI should take PI to criminal court for fraud,theft and conspiracy. And then take them to civil court for deformation,and liable suits.
