Seriously? Elizabeth Warren May Have Plagiarized ‘Pow Wow Chow’ Recipe Submissions

Okay, okay, we promise we’ll take a break from Elizabeth Warren stories — but we really have to do this one last report.
The Blaze reported on Wednesday that the Massachusetts senatorial candidate has offered some pretty flimsy evidence to prove her Cherokee Indian heritage. One of the weaker proofs she has offered is the fact that her cousin Candy Rowsey once edited an obscure 1984 cookbook titled “Pow Wow Chow.”
Then The Blaze reported yesterday that the former “Native American” Harvard Law professor actually contributed five recipes to said cookbook. The book also bills her as a Cherokee.

And just in time for the weekend, we bring you the latest in the continuing saga of “fauxcahontas”: Warren didn’t just contribute to the cookbook, but she may have even plagiarized a couple of the recipes, Breitbart’s Michael Patrick Leahy reports.
“The credibility of Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren took another hit today as Boston radio talk show host Howie Carr released evidence that appears to confirm Ms. Warren may have plagiarized at least three of the five recipes,” Leahy writes.
But which recipes did she allegedly rip-off and where’s the proof? You see, unlike Warren’s Cherokee heritage claims, allegation of this sort have to be backed up with something a bit more concrete than, say, “family lore.”
So where’s the proof?
“The two recipes, ‘Cold Omelets with Crab Meat’ and ‘Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing,’ appear in an article titled ‘Cold Omelets with Crab Meat,’ written by Pierre Franey of the New York Times News Service that was published in the August 22, 1979 edition of the Virgin Islands Daily News,” Leahy reports.
The “Pow Wow Chow” recipe for “Cold Omelets with Crab Meat” contains “all four of the ingredients listed in Mr. Franey’s 1979 recipe in the exact same portion but lists five additional ingredients,” Leahy points out.
Here are Franey’s recipes as they appeared in 1979.
“More significantly,” he adds, “her instructions are virtually a word for word copy of Mr. Franey’s instructions from this 1979 article.”
Here are Warren’s recipes as they appear in “Pow Wow Chow.”

Huh. That’s weird. According to “Pow Wow Chow,” all the recipes were passed down through generations of Oklahoma Native American members of the Cherokee tribe. Yet, somehow, it appears two of the recipes may have originated at Le Pavilion, “a fabulously expensive French restaurant in Manhattan,” as Leahy describes it.
But perhaps the bigger question here is this: where, exactly, did 19th-century Cherokee Indians all the way out in the plains of Oklahoma acquire a taste for Worcestershire sauce and “imported mustard”?
But wait! There’s more!
Warren’s “Herbed Tomatoes” recipe may have been copied from a 1959 Better Homes and Garden recipe, according to Leahy.
“Ms. Warren ‘s campaign has not commented on the suggestion that she may have plagiarized her recipe contributions to the Pow Wow Chow cookbook,” the Breitbart article adds.
“Sales of the Pow Wow Chow have heated up on Amazon since this controversy began, vaulting from a lowly 1.2 million ranking book to number 11,289 early this morning.”
Okay. As promised, we’re done with Warren stories for now (or until she does something else that makes us laugh).

Posted on May 19, 2012 at 1:23amHey guys give her a break. I’m sure she eats mutton and blood sausage all the time. I‘m sure she’s on the reservation butchering and cutting a sheep‘s throat while it’s still alive so it’ll bleed out to make blood sausage. My ex for over seven years is full-blooded Indian Navajo and my niece and nephew are have Navajo. This whole thing makes me sick. Besides I have never met a white person that didn’t claim to be part Cherokee matter-of-fact I’m as white as they come and I think I may be related to her I am part Cherokee as well maybe it could be possible.

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 2:32pmToo funny! I am 1/8th Cherokee and some other kind of Indian. My family didn’t make the march to Oklahoma, but hid out back in Kentucy. Since my family didn’t do that, I am not on the roles and most of my family choose to hide the fact that they had Indian blood. Unfortunately, the Cherokee Nation will not honor DNA testing to prove a relationship. All said though can EW prove anything other than she likes Crab and can read? So glad I don’t live in MA! It is sad that we have to deal with those that must embelish their history as well as being bad leaders! Alot of that in Washington these days..

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 10:13pmMany years ago a guy sold himself off as “Grey Owl”. He was so good even Native Americans in Canada laughed their backsides off when Grey Owl was pushing native rights and recognition even though good ol’ Grey Owl was in fact an imposter. Natives didn’t protest because good ol Grey Owl was selling a good story which in fact benefited I suppose the Native issues during those times.
Report Post »But, quackery and imposters seems to hold a re-occurring theme. This time Grey Owl has been replaced by Grey Hair, pardon me, Elizabeth Warren. Maybe she‘s been smokin’ them cheap cigarettes out of the Reserve a tad too much.

Posted on May 19, 2012 at 2:24pmDidn’t that also happen with a book called “Crying Wind”, which was originally offered as a biography, but later discovered to be fiction?
Ever since the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Rigoberta Menchú, whose work turned out to contain a large amount of fiction, I tend to be suspicious of claims that seem to be extensive.
I think Ward Churchill also claimed to be Native American, but wasn’t. “Fauxcahontas” should give him a call.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 10:08pmI know you wanna crucify this woman but let me tell you how recipe issues work. Recipes, by nature, are handed down through friends or family and network their way out into the universe – that is, if they are any good! It’s virtually impossible to copyright recipes because of this. After all, the apparent ‘original’ recipe is just as likely to be a passed-down recipe as the one being claimed as plagiarism.
This is particularly true of all those comb-bound volumes that consist of contributions from schools, churches, etc. They are not even intended to be original sources, just offered for sharing with friends and sold for fundraisers.
She didn’t plagiarize because she never claimed to have created the recipe. She merely shared something out of her recipe box, which is what everyone contributing to those comb-bound recipe books does. We’ve all contributed our favorite recipes to books like that. We didn’t plagiarize either. I have a special baked spaghetti recipe (and dozens of others) that I share with everyone I can – and that’s not plagiarism because it would be impossible to know the true, original source. If you were to examine the other recipes in this book, I’ll bet you would find them elsewhere as well. It’s the nature of that kind of cookbook.
Get on her case about her heritage claims, but this kind of pile-on is petty, vicious and unfair, and makes the accuser look worse that the accused.

Posted on May 19, 2012 at 4:30pmFrom a 2006 Washington Post Article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/03/AR2006010300316.html
“…U.S. copyright law addresses recipes, but what holds sway can be called either ethics or etiquette. Cooking is not considered inventing; rather, it evolves. Copyright law specifies that “substantial literary expression in the form of an explanation or directions,” such as a cookbook, can be copyrighted but that a mere list of ingredients cannot receive that protection…..”
Heck there is a whole slew of books detailing the recipes of all manner of products, from Twinkies to Big Macs to Oreos. All of them have been deconstructed (reverse engineered) and their recipes published in books and on videos.
That she is a raging communist should be enough to sully her reputation. No need to drag delicious, delicious food in to the fray.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 7:49pmOkay, Blaze, Scott Brown has multiple ethics complaints against him and you guys keep going on about Elizabeth Warren and what her family believed about itself. If there anything wrong with thinking that your family has Native American members? Is there anything wrong with participating in a cookbook for charity with recipes you enjoy in your home? Is there anything wrong with claiming as much ancestory as the current chief of the Cherokee Nation? You guys are really spinning your wheels over this, but it has nothing to do with the real issues faced by the Senate or the nation in this election. It’s smoke and mirrors and perpetuating it might be considered deceiving your audience in some quarters.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 10:05pm@Brovet, Where did she misrepresent her background? What did she profit from it? The cookbook is evidence that the belief in a Native heritage is held across the family and her cousin belongs to an organization that promotes the tribe. Where are your facts? My husband was one of the founding members of an Hispanic professional association. He is of German and Polish Jewish descent. He joined because he represented a lot of Hispanics and wanted to make sure that he represented them correctly. He was welcomed by the group of proud Latinos. One of the others is a sitting Congressman now.
@Markie, So you’re a Marine and at least 13 years my junior. Do I need to remind you of the things the Army says about Marines? I don’t have a tolerance for low character, none of my friends are TeaCons.
@Doom, You can prove that she lied on a job application? She was asked to come to Harvard based on her academic work, there was no application to lie on. If you were a ridiculous rightie you’d post on The Blaze.
