‘Set up to Be Shot’: TV Reporter Says Rebels Lured Him to Attack by Syrian Army

British Channel 4 News Journalist Alex Thomson Says Rebels Set Him Up To Be Shot By Syrian Army

Channel 4 News Chief Correspondent Alex Thomson

Providing further evidence that there don’t seem to be obvious good guys in the civil war gripping Syria, a prominent British journalist alleged he and his team were lured by Syrian opposition forces into a trap, hoping they would be targeted for killing by the Syrian Army last weekend.

Alex Thompson, chief correspondent for Channel 4 News described the harrowing experience on his blog. Unlike many reporters covering Syria who sneak across the border from Lebanon, Thomson and his team were covering the conflict with the knowledge of the Assad government, which had granted them entry visas.

Providing a window to the lives of reporters covering war zones, he explains a United Nations official at the outset emphasized its representatives were not responsible for journalists. U.N. officer in charge Mark Reynolds told Thomson, “If you get into trouble we’ll leave you, yes? You’re on your own,” words that later that day would ring frighteningly true.

Thompson sets the scene of the day which was tense but at first appeared not to hold much promise for action. Clearly this was a case of the quiet before the storm as their convoy set out:

Just two UN plus the local police white patrol car marked “Protocol” as escort, moving south through the peaceful areas of Homs, unmarked by war.

Barely ten minutes south from the city and it’s goodbye protocol. The last Syrian Army checkpoint is right on the main highway south to Damascus.

We’re headed west – just follow the direction the tank barrel is pointing next to the parked protocol car and you get the idea.

There’s always that slight tightening of the stomach across deserted no-mans-land, but this is open country, no sign of fighting.

Presently, the first motorbike picks us up and we are across and into the first Free Syrian Army checkpoint.

After a long and dusty half-hour of tracks across olive groves, we arrive at al Qusayr, to the predictable crowd scene.

The U.N. officials settle down for a long meeting with local leaders, as Thomson and his colleagues wait outside.

But time drags. Our deadline begins to loom. And there’s this really irritating guy who claims to be from “rebel intelligence” and won’t quite accept that we have a visa from the government.

In his book foreign journos are people smuggled in from Lebanon illegally and that’s that. We don’t fit his profile.

He and his mates are making things difficult for our driver and translator too – their Damascus IDs and our Damascus van reg are not helping.

This is new. Different. Hostile. This is not like Homs or Houla and still the UN meeting drags on in the hot afternoon…

We decide to ask for an escort out the safe way we came in. Both sides, both checkpoints will remember our vehicle.

As is characteristic of war zones, Thomson describes an unexpected turn of events:

Suddenly four men in a black car beckon us to follow. We move out behind.

We are led another route. Led in fact, straight into a free-fire zone. Told by the Free Syrian Army to follow a road that was blocked off in the middle of no-man’s-land.

At that point there was the crack of a bullet and one of the slower three-point turns I’ve experienced. We screamed off into the nearest side-street for cover.

Another dead-end.

There was no option but to drive back out onto the sniping ground and floor it back to the road we’d been led in on.

Predictably the black car was there which had led us to the trap. They roared off as soon as we re-appeared.

Without the ability to access the Free Syria Army fighters, The Blaze cannot verify if the rebels indeed were targeting Thomson and his team, or if they too were caught off-guard by Syrian Army forces. Thomson has no doubt:

I’m quite clear the rebels deliberately set us up to be shot by the Syrian Army. Dead journos are bad for Damascus.

That conviction only strengthened half an hour later when our four friends in the same beaten-up black car suddenly pulled out of a side-street, blocking us from the UN vehicles ahead.

An Arab League observer to Syria Nawaf Al Thani tweeted to Thomson that he believes he was similarly “set up” by Syrian rebels earlier this year.

The Committee to Protect Journalists reports at least nine journalists have been killed in Syria since November, making it “the most dangerous place for journalists in the world.”

Thomson says he believes “it was nothing personal.”

Yeah, it’s ethnic clensing. All those places the Muslims are being attacked are in the traditional Alawite areas near the coast. They are driving the Muslims out, (and/or exterminating them.)

They are about to exterminate a Muslim village very deeply embedded in the Alawite region. I suspect they won’t leave any body parts scattered around this time…

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Syrian government appears to be planning a massacre in the opposition stronghold of Haffeh, the U.S. State Department said on Monday, and it warned that Syria’s army will be held to account for killings.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington shared the alarm of international mediator Kofi Annan, who described reports of mortar bombs, helicopters and tanks being used in Haffeh, near the coast, as well as government shelling of the opposition stronghold of Homs.

“We are calling this out now in the hope that we can stop what could be a potential massacre,” Nuland said, citing reports from U.N. monitors on the ground in Syria.

Nuland said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces were using “horrific tactics” including firing on civilians from airborne helicopters and deploying plainclothes “shabbiha” militia which the opposition has accused of slaughtering civilians in earlier attacks in the villages of Houla and Mazraat al-Qubeir….”

Once again the US is helping the rebels. Can our government say with clarity who these people are? In Egypt and Libya the rebels turned out to be Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda. These people (rebels) will stop at nothing including killing the old, women and children to get power. The Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda and all the other terrorist groups are masters at killing then blaming someone else. They have no problem putting on the attire of their enemy, dressing up like a woman or loading a donkey with explosives to create as much death and destruction as possible. The rebels are no better than the dictators they wish to replace.

Our country has assisted in the total destruction of the Middle East. If they think handing countries over to the Muslim Brotherhood will benefit our international interests, their heads must be somewhere where the sun does not shine.

Different religion, different genetics (both parents have to be Alawite to be Alawite, no exceptions), civil war, 1300 years of grudges, heavy weapons and WMD, outside interests flooding them with weapons, this fire has a lot of gasoline on it.

The Muslims blow up pizza parlors full of Israeli women and children, but they never ever do that to the Alawites. Up to now. The reason is the Alwaites would exact a terrible revenge on the women and children of the Muslims, and they have the equipment and training to do it on an industrial scale. But these are Muslims after all, and every wild eyed Sunni jihadist is headed there, including Al-Qaeda, and whether we mention it or not, you better believe they want to grab one of those WMD sites. And they are getting stronger…

If there is a happy solution, where the WMD don’t get scattered to the wind, and there isn’t mass genocide and a Middle East wide war, it has to be to partition the country. Give the Alawites the homeland along the coast they they wanted all along. The butchering of the women and children are happening in Sunni enclaves in the Alawites areas. It could just be the strong eliminating the weak, but it also could be that’s what they are aiming at as a fallback position. Put a ton of UN troops between them and the Muslims for a half century or so. The Christians and other minorities can join them.

All any of them have to do is just take their azzes to Mexico, get some kid of ID saying they are Mexicans and come up here and get all kinds of free services, a great, almost free education, a place in government, run for any office and have all the protections that normally U.S. citizens would have and more. Vote themselves into Government and save all the killing. They can just come from within like those that are in there now working for any government but the U.S. who has fed, clothes, and gave them a great living. Is this all sick or what? It is true. They sit back and mock and laught at how stupid the American people are for allowing this. There is a great international outcry, including some here saying we should get involved militarily etc. because 10,000 have been murdered. 100,000 have been murdered just across our border. And Mexico is a lot easier for the US Army to get to. And we sure got justification right across our border if 10,000 in some tribal hellhole on the other side of the planet is justification. They own everything on the other side of the border, (and probably a lot on this side), turn it into a no-man’s land. Long before we get involved with this one.

Syria never signed any treaties about WMD, and are believed to have 50 different sites (at least) that reportedly include VX and Anthrax. No one knows for sure, (even if we didn’t have the example of Iraq), because since they never signed anything, they don’t have to say anything.

The Alawites get a lot of bad press. We all wail and moan about getting tough with militant Islam, but they have been living under the yoke of it for 1300 years. They fought on the side of the Crusaders against the Muslims, (after they were supposedly Muslim, which they aren’t.) In fact, they’ve always been on the side of the Christians and are more Christian than Muslim. The Christians In Syria support them and fear the Muslims for the same reason the Alawites do. They are the remnants of the Phoencians. They live on the coast, and there are mountains on the coast. They learned to retreat into the mountains to hide and to pretend to be Muslims. And they became very hard and warlike. In the Ottoman Empire, they weren’t slaughtered by the tens of thousands by the Muslims any more but had to pay the Dhimmi tax, and weren’t permitted good jobs and lived in poverty in their mountains. When the Ottoman Empire fell, and the French took over, the Alawites sided with the Christian French against the Muslims and finally were in positions of power. The French even gave them their own country sorta of for a few decades there on the Phonecian coast. But when the French created Syria, the Alawites, in particular Assad’s grandfather, begged the French to not abandon them to the tender mercies of the Muslims…Continued…

“Pro-French sentiment was expressed especially clearly in 1936, when the temporary incorporation of the ‘Alawi state into Syria provoked wide protests. A March 1936 petition referred to union with the Sunnis as “slavery.” On 11 June 1936, an ‘Alawi leader wrote a letter to Prime Minister Léon Blum of France, reminding him of “the profoundness of the abyss that separates us from the [Sunni] Syrians,“ and asking him to ”imagine the disastrous catastrophe that would follow” incorporation.
Days later, six ‘Alawi notables (including Sulayman Asad, said to be Hafiz al-Asad’s grandfather) sent another letter to Blum in which they made several points: ‘Alawis differ from Sunnis religiously and historically; ‘Alawis refuse to be joined to Syria, for it is a Sunni state and Sunnis consider them unbelievers (kafirs); ending the mandate would expose the ‘Alawis to mortal danger; “the spirit of religious feudalism” makes the country unfit for self-rule; therefore, France should secure the ‘Alawis freedom and independence by staying in Syria….Continued…

No power in the world can force them to accept the yoke of their traditional and hereditary enemies to be slaves forever…. The Assad family controls the shipping/smuggling coming through the coast. That’s where the Alawites are located, and with the tight cohesion, inevitable one would take over that and the Assad family is who did it. Those “Ghosts” that hacked up those kids were working for them, on a smaller scale, before they seized national power. They won’t go down easy, and that dentist is just a figurehead. And by now, the Assads have the heads of all Alawites (and Christians and all other minorities which all support them), on the block, can‘t let go of the tiger’s tail.

I have to say, that the 2 ‘massacres’ that have been very publicized over the lat two weeks seem to me to have the makings of the rebels backed by the terrorists organizations then that of the Syrian gov. They were shot by people coming out of the hills in different directions not bombed (if I’m not mistaken) and the fact that there were a large amount of children targeted screams propaganda. They are only going to get worse so the rebels can force the other nations to get involved with shock of the horrors and guilt.

Has it occurred to Alex Thompson that the people he dealt with who claimed to be Syrian opposition forces might have actually been agents for Assad? Probably not, because the Western main stream media on average are clueless ideologues or merely “dopes” as Glenn likes to refer to them as. By Callum Borchers, Globe Correspondent

Mitt Romney has renewed his call for the United States to arm Syrians rebelling against the regime of Bashar Assad, after more than 100 people were massacred in the village of Houla last Friday.

“President Obama can no longer ignore calls from congressional leaders in both parties to take more assertive steps,” Romney said Sunday. “The [Kofi] Annan ‘peace’ plan — which President Obama still supports — has merely granted the Assad regime more time to execute its military onslaught. The United States should work with partners to organize and arm Syrian opposition groups so they can defend themselves.”

You say that times have changed and that the wisdom of Washington no longer applies. Phewie. Progressives make the argument that the Constitution was written over 200 years ago and is outdated – what is the difference between what you said and the progressives?

If you want the constitution back – you have to embrace ALL of the constitution

Resembles other recent Middle Eastern battles for “democracy.” Like Libya. Who made up the “rebel fighters?” Al Qaeda was found in Libya and other Middle Eastern countries aiding the rebels. It’s a little naive on individuals parts to think in black and white terms. There is always a whole lot of gray in the situation. Chosing sometimes between bad or worse if one choses to get involved.

I am so greatful for this reporter’s bravery and integrity to report the story without the spin. Without the black and white portrayl of the story. I am sorry it almost came at a great cost. Just glad he and his team are ok.

i dont think i did – i was just showing how similar this is to american politics….

Washington tells us we must either support the Syrian regime or the Syrian rebels. I say they are BOTH bad decisions. The correct action is to not get involved in their alleged civil war (since the rebels may be muslm brotherhood….again).

Just like in america, they tell us we have to choose between democrats and republicans (lesser of two evils). Both are corrupt parties. The correct action is to not choose the lesser of two evils

of course you don’t you are not trying to understand how you might be wrong. Do a bit more introspection on your part. Won’t happen too much arrogance and self-importance. Good luck with that.

Dirt bags trying to get other dirt bags killed? Really? Why do we need reporters in foreign war zones? I know he is brit. It is not like the MSM suddenly tells the truth just because it is a war zone. I believe nothing the MSM says without independent confirmation.
