On Sunday, thousands of football fans will take their seats at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas — home of Super Bowl XLV. But before kickoff, there’s a lot of work to be done to make the arena safe for spectators after freezing temperatures, ice and as many as 6 inches of snow hit northern Texas early Friday morning.
In the latest weather-related report out of Dallas, ice tumbling from atop the stadium has injured at least five bystanders who were all transported to area hospitals.
Specific injuries have not been identified, and it was not immediately clear how the accident happened. But video from Fox affiliate KDFW shows how heavy snow and ice built up on the stadium’s exterior pose a significant danger for people on the ground:
Cowboys stadium is the world’s largest domed stadium and is set to host the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers as they face off Sunday afternoon.
Update: The number of injured has risen to seven, with one of them in serious condition.

Report Post »As for the Yankees saying we don’t know how to handle snow/ice, well we do. But I have seen many a Yank flee Northward when summer rolls in here on the Gulf Coast not knowing how in the world we can work in 98 deg temps and 98% humidity. But we can and do. We prefer that kind of weather in fact and loath the cold. But if you want a ******* contest for cold weather, I’ll stack up Amarillo or anywhere else in the Panhandle against anywhere up North for cold temps.
That’s why Texas is so great folks. You can have 15 deg in the Panhandle and 75 deg in Laredo. Match that anywhere in Yankeeland.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 7:45pmThe stadium can handle the load. It was built by a reputable firm known for building large facilities. And yes, we know how to handle ice and snow. At least we have enough sense to move far enough south away from communist states that make their people join unions and tax the living Hell out of them.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 7:43pmI wonder if they can open the roof and then close it as fast as they can so send a small shockwave on the whole dome. I am sure when that roof moves it send some serious waves on the whole dome.
I do like troyvar @ Posted on February 4, 2011 at 5:02pm idea of a chopper down-wash It would not take much and not even get that close but the snow that would be blown up could blind the pilot so that might not be an option. May just get some guys with climbing gear and shovels if it does not all come down before Sunday. They don’t want any falling on the crowd when they are outside waiting to go inside.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 4:51pmThose poor people inthe south don’t know how to deal with snow and ice. I guess they never expected to have any snow/ice when they built it. Up here, where it DOES snow every year, we have things on roofs that break up ice as it slides off and we know better than to stand under the overhang of a roof.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 4:55pmI can almost guarantee you that this kind of roof was not designed to withstand the tons of snow piled on it. Hopefully it will all slide off (safely) or melt prior to the big game this Sunday.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 5:06pmWill the roof cave in? Probably not, because it slid off the roof.
I watch the Texas border at http://www.blueservo.net, and one of the deputies told me that it was 16 degrees where he was, and he wasn’t in northern Texas. The thermometer on my computer said it was 37 where I am. A friend told me it was colder in Texas than in Alaska.
The weather map that the deputy emailed me showed sleet and snow all the way down to Brownsville at the Mexico border along the Texas Gulf coast. Some of the camera lenses were frozen over.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 5:56pm@A.T. Irrelevant… let me get this totally understood. Because of a piece of ice falling off and injuring a few people… you can equate that into the ENTIRE South as being not accustomed to ice and snow… AND being too dumb for standing under an overhang of a roof. Good grief…
Yes, we don‘t have a lot of snow here yearly and as a result we don’t buy a ton of snow equipment. That’s called common sense. But, we are use to ice storms here as this is what we typically can see. As for example ….. last night.
“I guess they never expected to have any snow/ice when they built it.”. Do you even know what you’re talking about? It’s called Snow Load. I‘m sure the AE Firm that designed the stadium wasn’t two rednecks that lived down a dirt road.
How about saying the same dumb comment (replace snow/ice for blizzard) for the Minnesota Vikings Stadium after it failed from a snow load?
Yes, I’m a Civil Engineer and from Mississippi. Yes, we had text books and even pencils at College, No, we don’t all walk around without shoes.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 3:34amThere is more dander inside the dome than outside. With the large clean areas and other areas still loaded that causes a very strong and unbalanced stress on the structure. It is much more likely to cave in now than before. The weather is supposed to get warmer. Lets hope it is all gone by game time.
Report Post »scaldisnoel
Posted on February 5, 2011 at 6:49amBOB DEVINE, you said, “With the large clean areas and other areas still loaded that causes a very strong and unbalanced stress on the structure. It is much more likely to cave in now than before.”
Unless you were one of the design engineers or have specific engineering knowledge about the structure, you have no idea whether that is true or not. Although Dallas does not get large amounts of snow every year, they do get it often enough, and get ice storms regularly as well. These kinds of loads, including unbalanced loads, are designed for every day. Although engineers cannot anticipate every possible eventuality, the idea that they didn’t consider many of the likely unbalanced loading scenarios in their design is preposterous. If there was a likelihood of collapse because a particular unbalanced loading condition was not considered, they certainly wouldn’t be allowing people inside the building right now.
