Severely Malnourished Baby Who Was Face of Somalia Famine Now Thriving As Rare Success

DADAAB, Kenya (AP) — Only 10 days ago, Minhaj Gedi Farah was too weak to cry and his skin crumpled liked thin leather under the pressure of his mother’s hands. Now doctors say the severely malnourished 7-month-old appears out of danger of joining the more than 29,000 children who already have died in the famine.

Minhaj Gedi Farah, a seven-month-old child arrived weighing 3.4 kilos Tuesday, July 26, 201 at the International Rescue Committee hospital in the Eastern Kenyan village of Hagadera. His condition drastically improved since his arrival, currently weighing 3.8 kilos. (AP Photo/Jerome Delay)

It‘s a rare success story amid unimaginable misery for parents at the world’s largest refugee camp – a place where a father must bury two of his daughters one day, and their brother the next.

Seven-month-old Minhaj though now weighs more than 8 pounds (3.8 kilograms) – still well below what he should for his age, but a major improvement from 7 pounds (3.2 kilograms) when he first arrived at a field hospital ward here.

“He is in stable condition and he is doing well,” said Dr. John Kiogora of the International Rescue Committee, who has been treating the infant since his arrival in late July.

Startling photos of Minhaj’s twig-like arms and hollow cheeks made him the frail face of the worst famine in 60 years. On Saturday, though, the wide-eyed baby looked around the ward inquisitively and became captivated with a journalist who was taking his picture.

It’s a miracle for his mother, and a testament to just how hard doctors and other health care workers here are trying to save lives as more and more malnourished children arrive each day.

“He has no problem compared to the past days,” said his mother Asiah Dagane, who now smiles broadly and frequently plants kisses on the baby’s cheeks. “Now he sleeps the bulk of the night. When he wakes up, he is hungry and wants milk.”

Most parents have been far less fortunate: New arrivals at Dadaab have described losing as many as four children to starvation and disease along the journey by foot from Somalia. Others made unthinkable decisions about which children to take with them, and which to leave for dead under trees so that the entire family did not perish.

As Minhaj’s mother celebrated his recovery on Saturday, Muhumed Surow had to bury his 1-year-old daughter Liin, who died from malnourishment overnight after the family reached this refugee camp too late to save her.

The 27-year-old father sat about 10 yards (meters) away from the thigh-deep grave of his little girl. Dozens of refugees attended the funeral at the edge of Ifo Extenision, part of the Dadaab camps. Surow sobbed in a squatting position as fellow mourners tried to console him.

“I was not thinking of losing a child when I was coming to this country. I was instead saying to myself that Kenya is a peaceful country. But when I came, I found a bad country, where wind blows every time. And that affected our children. The sadness you see is because of that,” said Surrow, whose 3-year-old Alaso has survived.

His wife’s mourning is tinged with hope for the future after she gave birth to a baby boy, Hamdi, just two days before her 1-year-old died.

“I’m pained and saddened by the loss of my daughter. I can’t do anything about it. But I pray to God to give me a good replacement that lives a long life,” said the 24-year-old mother, Hamaro Mohamed.

It’s a grief that all too many here share. Three of Mayow Aden Ali’s six children have died at Dadaab: On Friday, he buried his 6-month-old daughter and her 5-year-old sister. On Saturday, he buried his 2-year-old-son.

“They were taken to hospital, but doctors could not save them,” he says, now thinking of returning to Somalia, where his three surviving children remain.

More than 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days in southern Somalia alone, according to U.S. estimates. The U.N. says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished, suggesting the death toll of small children will rise in the coming weeks.

Here in this hospital ward with drawings of fruit and Arabic letters on the wall, the staff draw strength from success stories like Minhaj. The stabilization center run by the IRC is totally full, though, forcing the group to set up a tent for the increasing number of malnourished children who arrive each day.

Doctors hope that Minhaj can soon leave the ward, though he’ll need to return for regular monitoring and checkups.

“I’m very happy and very joyful,” his doctor said. “That is the best thing, I think, I have done for this child to make sure I’ve saved his life.”

Different cultures think differently. I’m well into my eighties now but as a young boy I often wondered the same thing. Why did depression people have such large families knowing that the kids were so malnourished that their lives were miserable? Remember pop taking lard sandwiches to work with a family of ten mouths to feed. Doctors were there when you were near death and dentists were there to simply pull teeth. School nurses were a godsend to the kids and by the standards of today we were all undernourished when we were drafted.

We’re burning our food for fuel because of morons like you. We’re broke. We can’t help the whole world, at least not right now. Those that ask; “where are the other nations in providing aid” simply point out the obvious. Other countries shoot their mouths off in the UN, but DO NOTHING! The Somalia problem is caused by Muslims. Not just the radicals, but ALL MUSLIMS! That means you. Somebody that hates America so badly should run for politics. Why don’t you post your name and address so we can hear more of your point of view. Maybe you can convince me to hate my country.

I too was born just after the great depression, my dad took a bread-butter& tomato sadwich and peaches each day for years, as his lunch. Normally he’d save us some of the peaches. He had 6 kids, but on a farm, we all helped out and most labor was done by hand until the older 3 were grown and leaving. I have a friend who grew up on a dairy farm, with 15 children, he said with each birth, parents went out and bought a heifer, so by the time the child was old enough to start milking, his cow was producing. Their family prospered because they had so many kids.
The Bible says children are a blessing from the Lord, perhaps countries don’t find that blessing because they (and we) aren’t looking to him for blessing. When America prospered so was before birth control, and abortion entered it. Compare with since?!

Most of all I pray for those people who are suffering a spriritual drought of compassion–always looking for someone to blame or Hate –please forgive them for they know not what they say. Amen!

Ghostbuster… gee I don’t know. Ever heard of “free will” ????

God gave humans the choice of free will. And in doing so, He allows people the full-on choice to choose Him or not choose Him. And when people do not choose Him, He doesn’t just come down from His throne and MAKE you choose Him. That wouldn’t be free will would it?

So when people choose to do bad then, instead of good, bad things happen and there is no intervention—not yet. Because the process of free will has to run it’s course, good or bad.
If you can’t understand this concept then pick up a bible and start reading.

As far as Somalis in America, Obama recently issued an executive order to bring 60,000 – 80,000 Somali refugees to America, with NO background checks. I reported this, here at the BLAZE about 3 weeks ago.

Now they seem to be a damned “RIGHT”. We enjoyed the Summer Cottage, a second car and a Caribbean Vacation ..for years… and now we cry when we have to just get back to basics… A job, one home ..maybe 2 cars and Staycations in a one day drive. I am in the Autumn of my life and have watched this nation become so “possessions oriented”. We are losing with our Children..Down on the list of EDUCATION in almost every catagory, Drop Out Rate climbing and the amount of people on Public Care up. We laughed at the Soviet Union and now..their likes laug at us.. WE ARE SPOILED…… ROTTEN. Oh …I love my country. Nice compassion, who are you to decide who gets to have children and who doesn‘t or shouldn’t? Be greatful of where you live and that you have the chance to raise a family in a healthy and safe environment. And while you‘re at it maybe you could see it in your heart to contribute a portion of your wealth to those that don’t enjoy those priviledges. I do. Too many people (everywhere—in America and around the world) think they can do their thing and then expect other people to foot the bill. How about a little self-reliance. You think the American pilgrims had anything to start with? They started in a frikkin forest and made this country, surviving harsh winters and little food, but they worked hard and survived. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. It’s not just a cliche.

And your comments disgust every true Christian in America! When people live, they don‘t consider all the things you’ve mentioned, and then just ignore them to make babies. They want the life our Bill of Rights guarrantees us. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
If these didn’t cause more children to be born, the population of the world would soon die off.
I don’t have the right to say that others are evil if they use birth control (not murdering the unborn) but I do believe that teaching the peoples of these countries to provide for their families should include working to help them become free to prosper; NOT BRINGING THE PEOPLES OF ONCE PROSPEROUS COUNTRIES DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL AS I’VE OFTEN HEARD ELITISTS ARGUE!
America used to be “The Shining City on a hill”, which other countries aspired to copy, unfortunately the above elitists are now in control of America, and the American people free to amass wealth to share with others, will always mean others have more than if our own corrupt government takes it by force, then wastes more than half before giving it to good purpose!

It is a very old organization and I have no doubt that my donation is going to help improve the lives of children and their families throughout the world. C’mon folks we have our own problems with our own starving African-Americans right here in America! Let us concentrate on this for a change huh? I saw the face of a malnourished African-American kid having to fight for food at the Wisconsin State Fair. He was battling along side hundreds of other malnourished African-Americans, being forced to steal wallets and other property to pay for or barter for food just to get through the night in that war torn part of the country. It‘s a shame that we focus on the world’s problems when we have the face of starvation right here in our own back yards.

I also saw this during Hurricane Katrina when thousands of our starving African-Americans were forced to steal TV’s and other big box type entertainment systems to trade for a mere loaf of bread.

While I certainly feel for the starving African-Africans in Somalia… we have starving African-Americans here who need Social Justice and FOOD! Or at the very least… a new pair of the new sneaker called “Felony Feet!”

Unless I miss read this, this “miracle” baby who is 7 months old, just lost a sister who was “1” and became a big brother 2 days later. When did gestation in humans become less than 9 months? Oh wait, based on several other family’s in this group, it obviously is less than normal humans with this race. Makes you wonder?

What kind of affect do you think starvation has on a pregnant mother’s risk of giving birth prematurely?

This is so sad.. Yes they are having more children than they can feed.. and YES they fail to practice birth control.. However those helping them are Christians and don’t believe in birth control.. The shame is we give 7% of our GDP to the U.N. (one of Obama’s first moves was to increase what we give the U.N.) we pay 3//4 of the cost of NATO to out a leader in LIBYA who yes should be gone.. while CHILDREN starve..instead of going in and helping these people we send money to the corrupt leaders of this country who do NOTHING for the people who are dropping like fly’s .. Makes no sense..

Oprah started a school for girls in South Africa back in 2007. Sex scandals, student sexual misconduct and a dead baby is what she got for her $$.

The children always die first. So sad.

The discontented blacks living in America should move to Somalia and Kenya where they can experience oppression, hunger, disease and death. They might appreciate America more. They might even realize they should be thankful their ancestors were brought here as slaves and liberated. However, if they want to claim their African heritage of opression, hunger, disease and death we should not stand in their way. A one way ticket would be tax money well spent.

This is yet another example of what happens when you do something like fertilizing weeds, feeding stray cats or throwing gasoline on a fire and expecting to have diminished the problem in some misguided way. Like many problems of this sort, let it be and over time it will take care of itself.

Somali muslims benifit from Christians donations. In return, Somali muslims hunt down and shoot Somali christians in the back, rape their women, burn their their chruchs, kill their children and steal their crops. In the meantime, Al Qaeda-linked militants block aid to starving muslim children.

They’re demanding money. They need money. We won’t give them any knowing full well children are diying without our aid. hence we are okay with children dying We’re worse then them because they really are empoverished as we see in their desperateness leads them to piracy. Now al shabab are letting aid groups unfettered acces. Still america does not want to help south somali because al shabab is there. We are using food as a weapon allowing mass starvation there to prove we don’t deal with terrorists. We are stalinists now-knowlingly with holding food from people because we don’t like their governmen['al shabab].We are becoming THE 21stc genocidal people.

If you are starving, your brain does not even function property. If you do not have enough protein before the age of seven, your IQ is going to be extremely low. These people are like little animals. It is so sad.

I pray that after you have children, you can always take care of them. The older children in Somalia survived until the drought and the “bad guys.” The article talked about five year olds – they were probably healthy until bad times hit their area. Part of the problem is these people are refugees – traveling a distance through a drought area hurts the youngest the most.

They are traveling to Kenya because in Kenya they are safe. The hospitals are in Kenya at the refugee camps. Kenya is helping as much as they can.

Christian aid is trying to help the people in Somalia so they don‘t have to make the dangerous trek to Kenya but they haven’t been given safe access to the drought areas,

I pray bad things don’t happen to you and you never have to make the decisions some of these people have had to make.

Ever heard of rape? It’s rampant in Somolia. The same pirates and warlords that your joking about are the one’s commiting the crimes. Once impregnated, what’s a woman to do? Murdering unborn children is not an option so they have their babies and do the best they can.

@REPUBLICORP – You’re a progressive liberal tool trying to make conservatives and/or The Blaze look bad with your race baiting comments. Go troll somewhere else. Consider yourself reported.
