Millions of Gallons of Sewage Barreled Into NYC Waters During Beastly Hot Weekend

During a week of unbearable humidity and consecutive high 90 and triple-digit degree days, many New Yorkers would have already preferred their air-conditioned homes over local beaches. Millions of gallons of untreated sewage that discharged from Manhattan into the Hudson and Harlem Rivers Wednesday made it near certain that no one would take a dip. New York Times reported Friday morning:
“The rivers that run into New York Harbor will be unfit for recreational activities at least through Sunday because of a catastrophic fire that shut down one of the city’s largest sewage treatment plants, the city’s health department said Thursday.
The declaration, rare in scope, was made as millions of gallons of untreated sewage were being discharged from Manhattan into the Hudson and Harlem Rivers.
As New Yorkers reeled from hot weather, the authorities also advised against swimming at four city beaches on Staten Island and in Brooklyn.”
News came in today that hundreds of city workers and out-of-state contractors traveling through the night and working in temperatures up to 104 degrees were finally able to end the flow of sewage late Friday night.
Even though they stopped the flow, would you still take a swim?

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 11:33pmTo reduce bacteria content they are adding chlorine to the waste water??? Okay, that makes sense on some level… But lets look at this holistically shall we. The fastest and best way to rid the water of sewage is through bio remediation and that is bacteria eating the junk. If they add chlorine to the water, it kills all the bacteria that are already at work eating it and decomposing it. This means that the junk will just sink and stay there for longer. They should stop these knee jerk reactions and realize that chlorinating the water wasn’t only bad for the bio remediation process, but also for any wildlife in the area. In alot of places in the world, they crap in the river all the time and still use it for cooking and cleaning without a second thought. Sure, they have higher disease rates, but this is a single incident involving one treatment plant over a very short time. Nothing to make a big stink about. Like Mr. Gump said, it happens.

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 9:50pmHow best to comment….$#!t Happens. What would be worse is if they had simply capped the entire system, shut off the water, and made the people suffer until their “sanitary system” was repaired. Nature has a way of…ahem…disposing of its waste. It’s nasty, but it happens all the time. The sea life in the river & surrounding waters will no doubt devour it and be stronger for it, though I’d think twice about ordering the sushi anytime soon.

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 9:19pmIn all seriousness, this is a shame. But on the funnier side of this story, perhaps not so very funny at all, is the fact that lazy, greedy “unionists” run the entire show in NYC. Can’t expect them to care all that much about anything that spells work, such as staying ahead of a crisis. After all, crisis means OVER-TIME. I know my remarks are “jaded” but what the heck, bet they are not that far off the mark!
