‘Sexual Anorexia’: Porn May Be Killing Young Men’s Sexual Performance

Porn Is Causing Performance Problems for Young MenIs excessive porn use hurting men’s ability to perform in the bedroom? Recent research and expert opinions indicates that, indeed, it is. But this notion isn’t new. Religious leaders and experts, alike, have been sounding the alarm on porn use for quite a while.

An Italian study conducted earlier this year is only one example of research that sheds light on the negative impact of pornography consumption — an issue that is often glazed over or looked at as a social “norm” with very little impact on its participants.

However, the Italian study, which surveyed 28,000 pornography users, found that many men may be suffering from “sexual anorexia.” While it sounds like a bizarrely unbelievable term, the study results seem to corroborate the notion that too much porn has a negative impact on sexual performance. Apparently, men become so accustomed to the unrealistic images they see in pornography that they can no longer get erections.

For many of the men in the Italian study, regular consumption of porn began at age 14, with daily use in their mid-20s including violent images that they had become accustomed to. While gradual, this consumption has apparently harmed their real-life relationships. Chris Matyszczyk explains:

For their belief is that Web porn simply numbs men’s pleasure receptacles, desensitizing responses to the neurochemical dopamine. This is a chemical associated with reward and, in young men, researchers believe that gorging on Internet porn simply shuts down the physiological sense of reward from sex.

Because the Web allows for so many different–and, if the user so chooses–ever more intense stimulations, the mind-body continuum begins to feel nothing at all.

Porn Is Causing Performance Problems for Young Men“It starts with lower reactions to porn sites, then there is a general drop in libido and in the end it becomes impossible to get an erection,” explains Carlo Foresta, head of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine (SIAMS).

According to SIAMS data, about 28.9% of Internet users in Italy frequent porn sites. Considering the research results, this is extremely concerning. According to ANSA.it, “This placed Italy in fourth spot in Europe behind Germany with 34.5%, France with 33.6% and Spain with 32.4%.”

And while some may try to dismiss this as more of a European problem, the issue is likely occurring across the board. Psychology Today writes that regardless of education, religious views, values, diets, attitudes, marijuana use and the like, many young people are seeking assistance for this very reason. While these people are fine physically, it seems the emotional impact of porn may be profound. PT continues:

Many men don‘t realize their brain’s sensitivity is declining toward normal sex because Internet erotica delivers endless dopamine hits—making erection and climax possible where normal encounters would not. When they try to have actual intercourse and cannot, they understandably panic.

The brain changes causing porn-induced erectile dysfunction arise from actual physical addiction processes (among them, numbing of the pleasure response of the brain). Quitting can therefore be quite challenging. In addition to an alarming temporary drop in libido, some men experience withdrawal symptoms: insomnia, irritability, panic, despair, concentration problems, and even flu-like symptoms. Finding a good counselor who understands addiction, and why today’s porn has different effects from viewing a Playboy magazine, can be very helpful.

For the addicted, hope is not lost, though. Foresta explains that “recovery” is possible and that with the proper help, someone can improve within only a few months. Experts recommend that someone suffering from porn addiction see a counselor who specializes in treating addiction, as he or she can help in the recovery process.

Central planners again back to their game “save the young and children” with more regulations. Liberty and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY should be protected, not the sperm count!

All that affirmative-action quality “research” (surely conducted via government grants) did not include the effect of feminism on decline in sperm-count of males. It can be evident to anybody by just looking how women get more and more naked in public over the past 100 years just to attract less interested males. When dominant action is taken away from males (via political correctness and other government regulations), brain & production of hormones is affected. It is just the fact of modern life, no need to pass a judgment. If you want males back on their feet, legalize prostitution with no taxation to make it affordable (We all know that women are the majority of voters and wont like that. That is where democracy sucks.)

What’s the big deal? Feminazis have been loving the fact that science is finding ways to “do without men” (except for the real heavy work) for decades. They pretty well have the world the way they wanted it, now, so lets see some leadership that makes men want to spend more time with their female counterparts. The problem is disinterest. Women have made themselves undesirable in a number of ways to the male population in general. What goes around comes around.

there is absolutely no way to paint porn in a good light. everyone involved is hurt in the end. just like with any sin…you cannot escape the price of indulging in darkness.

while porn steals the life out of you over time and destroys even the ones you say you love…true, loving, and committed relationships only strengthen you and make you better. True love is life-giving. God’s way is always for our own good. His way is one man and one woman–forsaking ALL others (virtual and real), and giving of themselves for each other. Devotion. Putting the one you love before yourself. Caring for one another…how could porn EVER hold a candle to the beautiful complexities of knowing another person–body and soul–getting to know them more and more over a lifetime of love?

That’s a “good point”, is it not?

Though this article would have it that reduced libido is a bad thing – you’d think evangelicals would be all over it for killing the sex drive of their teenagers.

Rape, or any sexual assault for that matter, have NOTHING to do with sex at all. They are crimes of power and control. Therefore, porn will not affect it either way. What I can see occuring more often are violent sexual encounters, since that tends to be the escalation taken by porn viewers. Once they’ve reached that point, they can’t get satisfaction any other way. Whether their “partner” is aware that those are their intentions before hand……who knows.

Except, you leave out the part where the female is completely in charge of the events… when it happens, how it happens, regardless of the male’s true desires. Turning it off and on at will or convenience.

Now the world is figuring out Men are coping just fine without the woman-is-the-sole-control-over-sex-factor and women are no longer in charge. A lot of men can now sleep peacefully without the nonsense their wives make them put up with for intimacy, and it can now be more on the Men’s terms, too.

Why would those young women degrade themselves so much for the dollars they make. I know they can make some decent $$$$. But at what cost to themselves. They have to stay on that side of the unsavory street for those will always be the only friends they will have. If, and if they were ever to have a family, what in the heck would they tell their teenage sons or daughters if Mommy popped up on some TV at some kids party? Doing the things that those Porn actors do? AHHHHH! When the day of reckoning arrives the Lord is going to be separating a whole bunch of people to HOT side of the room. Life here is but a flash. Life with our Savior is forever and glorious.

All that have ever lived and died will one day be resurrected to face Jesus who suffered and died for them, and they will be judged by how they lived they lives, the STANDARD by which judgment will be made are the Books of the Holy Bible. Notice Revelation 20:11-12, -”And I saw a Great White Throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, STAND BEFORE GOD; and the BOOKS (of the Bible) were opened; and another Book was opened, which is the Book of Life, and the dead were JUDGED OUT OF THOSE THINGS WHICH WERE WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS, according to THEIR WORKS.”

Disagree. The ‘porn’ site I visit is nothing but girls standing around without clothes. No sex; no porn. It is beautiful….. after all it was God who created the human body and what God creates is holy, not disgusting.

As for the article, it’s really just the body becoming accustomed. Like when you take aspirin to dull pain, but eventually it stops working, so you need a stronger drug like tylenol or vicadin. It’s a NATURAL process designed by God when he created the body, not an evil process as you would try to mislabel it.

I can assure you that porn would definately destroy, not only relationships…including with the Heavenly Father, but also your physical health. Our bodies are meant to be cherished and loved by our husbands, not anyone else. Anything outside of those terms is adultery. I’m sorry you feel differantly sir, that your feeding your eyes and your body with such sin. I will pray for you and anyone else that reads this that may view porn. It is a sin…period, that’s it. I’m talking about the pornography that people actually look at (rather than the niche things which can indeed be quite horrible, Child Pornography included). 99% of porn is not the harmful stuff, just like how 99% of churches are not the Westboro Baptists.

i worked in the trash in LA, back in my mid 30′s. boy girl videos. it was fun and i met many people i had wanted to meet. Had the connection so I went for it. Then moved back home to the bay area. Struggling with porn is not fun. When i had girlfriends, i laid off of it and was happy. over the years I totally agree with this study. You are used to looking at beautiful, women with killer bodies and if your girlfriend isn’t like them, it’s hard to perform. I was able to perform but it took a while maybe 2 weeks or 3 to lay off the porn and become normal. But your not really normal until you let God clean you up and even with God, there can be such torment in trying to stop. You have to give it all to Him and rest in His power. I’ve seen much victory in my own life but your never out of the woods until the day he takes you home. You can have victory here on earth but without a good woman in a man’s life he can go astray. It‘s why God said it’s not good for man to be alone. so for some of you proud all about me women, take a look at yourself because your no better. Porn is destructive. Stay away from it

Been married over 25 years and I understand the battle you men fight, therefore I try very hard to keep myself as best as I can, diet, exercise, my husband comes home to a fixed up, ready to please him woman everyday, and has everyday since the beginning….1. because I love him, but 2. because I understand I fight a huge battle. This is not to say things have been perfect, they have not…..BUT it sure does make his battle a whole lot easier. I think more woman, especially Christian woman would do well to get in the battle and fight for their husbands also. For some reason many Christian woman think they need to “not care” about the outward appearance and they go to the extreme, and I say noway! Proverbs 31:29, many women have done well, BUT you excel them all! Do your best ladies, in EVERY area, including taking care of your outward appearance. Let me just say this, after the many years of marriage, and several kids later…(because we both fight hard to please each other), our sex life is through the roof! There is a distinct line between porn and erotica. If one is turned off by porn, then I would think one might be more conscientious about what one is viewing in one‘s free time or one’s down time. The imagination can be a wonderful tool when it is employed towards something good or productive, and there is nothing wrong with healthy nudity. If it’s just sweat and hair… where’s the mystique? Where’s the romance? Where’s the attraction? Good sexual intercourse cannot be learned from a manual, you have to literally feel your way because every body is different. Ultimately, porn will grow old because it’s the shock value that initially provides a sick and twisted thrill. Try taking your time. Try reading erotic novels for ideas – Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Lover, there are others. Get a copy of the Kama Sutra with the drawings, not photos. Leave a little bit to discover for yourselves. Not every thing works for every body.

Who wants to make love to someone that is turned on by someone else or that fantasizes about another woman while having sex with you? It makes sense that a person’s sexual drive would diminish because of porn..the bible teaches that we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven if we are fornicators, adulterers, or homosexuals,,not to mention liars. drunkards, theives, revilers or idolators. If we followed the laws of God..we would all lead much better and fulfilling lives here. I have heard and believe that evil spirits enter through drugs, pornography.,and the occult. 2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

@ Wisehiney, You are correct, but I’ll add further… Going to “those” sites on the internet, there are advertisements everywhere, just clicking on those ads brings in dollars to more advertisers on that site. Being on that site gets the viewer tracked, and then others market you based on the history, which continues the money. It’s not just the purchase of the filth.

It is such a struggle to break the cycle, it IS an addiction, and every man struggles with lust towards women, in some form or another. If they say the don’t, they are either lying or not straight.

I despise my struggle, but to be brutally honest, I don’t despise it ENOUGH to quit, just yet… every day is a battle. I know there are sites that can help, http://www.xxxchurch.com is one, another one is http://www.opendns.com (if you are a computer geek, you can shut down ways to view it)… Good luck to those trying to quit too.

      Amen Drippy Fawcett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And for you women out there, deciding that is is OK to be 50 – 200 lbs overweight and your husband should still be attracted to you is ridiculous. Much of the problem is the females themselves and not trying to be attractive for their husbands. This is usually the number 1 or 2 emotional need of men – for their wife to be attractive to them. Yet women consistently refuse to meet this need claiming as their excuse that they must be liberated, independent women. I argue that 90% of the pornography problem is the woman herself.

@Isles: “Why anyone would prefer porn to an actual woman is beyond me.”

Very few people do. You’re making a mistake in your assumptions.

For, say, a teenager, the choice is between porn and, well, nothing most of the time. Would you really prefer they go out and knock up some girl instead? Most girls aren’t Bristol Palin with their own reality TV shows to support the baby.

For an adult, porn is there for when you’re between girlfriends. Frequent orgasms reduce mortality by up to 50% – you’re harming your body by abstaining permanently.

“If porn is making it harder (no pun intended) to have a relationship with a woman, DROP THE PORN.”

Absolutely! Any time something gets out of control, we should rein it in. That’s what makes us humans, after all, not beasts.

If you swim too much, and it ****** off your girlfriend, then you should think about your priorities, for example.

“If you are hungry I can understand fantasizing about food, but not when you have a steak in front of you on the plate.”

A lot of Americans could do more with visualizing food instead of eating it…

66% have no problem with it. So… you’re wrong.

Since you’re not yet married, here’s a generalization that will work wonders for you: women LOVE romance novels. When your wife’s favorite author releases a new book, you’ll be very happy for the next week.

But make no mistake – *romance novels are just porn with prettier packaging*.

If women hated all porn, 60% of them wouldn’t be reading romance novels on a DAILY basis.

      Foobear,

I seriously doubt 60% of women in ANY demographic group have no problem with porn. Maybe that survey was taken of the “readership” of PLAYBOY.

As for romance novels. My mother was addicted to them in a sense. And yes, they can be seen as the female version of porn, with a MAJOR difference. Women aren’t doing to romance novels what men are doing to porn.

Also, men dont really care about romance novels but women DO care about porn. Also, romance novels do not lead to greater and greater pervesity in order to deliver the elusive sexual high. Like many addictions, porn is progressive. In my youth Playboy was standard porn. Now that seems positively tame. It isn’t because Playboy has gotten better. It is because society has gotten worse and porn has upped the ante. The stuff you can find on the internet today without much work was never seen by the vast majority of men 30 years ago. And the move on up, or down, the ladder of perversity is encouraged in all levels of the porn world.

And despite the bogus claims that porn helps ease sexual temptation, the reverse is true. It only takes the edge off for the moment, but it does nothing to increase the psyche’s ability to resist. Instead it breaks down the mind’s resistance to further perversions. Self-control is not taught by porn.

      Posted on October 26, 2011 at 1:29am

@Isles: Doing some quick and dirty internet searches, it seems that 66% of women do not mind that their men watch porn, and that, in fact two-thirds of women watch porn (at least in the UK – http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/article2355510.ece). Though 1/3 report being disgusted if they caught their men watching porn, 1/3 wouldn’t care, and 1/3 would be aroused by it.

You’d probably get different results depending on how you phrase the questions and what sample group you pick, but the point is, there‘s quite a few women in the world that simply don’t care, and their husbands watching porn will not offend them.

“As for romance novels. My mother was addicted to them in a sense. And yes, they can be seen as the female version of porn, with a MAJOR difference. Women aren’t doing to romance novels what men are doing to porn.”

Right. They’re *writing* them as well. The overwhelming majority of romance, erotica and fan fiction authors are women.

“Also, men dont really care about romance novels but women DO care about porn.”

Stipulating their could be a problem if she does care, would you not admit then that there’s not a problem if your wife does not care about porn? As most don’t?

“Also, romance novels do not lead to greater and greater pervesity in order to deliver the elusive sexual high. Like many addictions, porn is progressive.”
