Sexy Photo Results in Suspension for Canadian Race Car Team

According to Ontario’s Waterloo Region Record, a Canadian university shut down the school’s race car team after a photo of one of its members posing in high heels and a bikini appeared online.

The University of Waterloo’s decision to suspend the team means that the students will not be able to enter the car in an international contest to be held in Michigan next month. The team’s suspension lasts until June.

Sexy Photo Results in Suspension for Canadian Race Car Team

The students built and designed the car themselves.

The university’s dean of engineering said that the suspension, “results from misuse of the student design centre space for an unauthorized photo shoot involving the Formula SAE vehicle.” The school’s spokesman, Michael Strickland, called the photograph “inappropriate and denigrating.”

Steve Lambert, the team’s faculty advisor, said that the students are “very disappointed” to be missing the Michigan contest.

In a statement posted on the team’s website, Lambert explained that the bikinied woman posing with the car was doing so for charitable reasons:

One of the bitter ironies of the present situation is that the photo-shoot was intended to promote women. It was part of an entry into a calendar competition to promote University women with a combination of beauty and intelligence, with some of the proceeds directed to the Canadian Cancer Society. While on the one hand it is a very powerful and positive message – that this student felt comfortable enough in our team environment to celebrate her femininity in such a fashion – they failed to fully appreciate the ease with which these photos could be taken out of context.

Though the team was disappointed by this setback, the members are not going to lose track of their goals. As the team management writes on the website: “We will emerge from this with even more passion, more drive and more focus than we had before. We intend to win.”

Race cars and bikini clad girls are tradition within the car culture, not controversy.

Has the school admin never seen a Formula 1 race and the girls in the paddock area??? Racing is surrounded by scantily clad women so whats wrong with this? Its within the norm for the industry. Like students never wear bathing suits ???

The university’s dean…said…the suspension, “results from misuse of the student design centre space for an unauthorized photo shoot involving the Formula SAE vehicle.”

“unauthorized” translates to “they didn’t let me know about it so I could be there for the photo shoot and meet the girl.”

It’s been alluded to here already, but contemporary educational management probably would have no problem with a smooth, sculptured A&F dude in a thong and a pink boa.

    I‘d volunteer but I don’t fit the bill. :-)

Because college and sex never go hand in hand…. no pun intended.

I don’t think this would violated even the BYU honor code.

She’s hot and this photo would have brought at least a dozen or more fans to the group of 5 people who cared about this racing team in the first place.

Gee I bet if they put a burkha and veil on her they’d have no problem… She’s in a bikini, not a thong and pasties…. I’m for modesty when appropriate, this is car racing for cripes sake. When it’s over the top they let it go, but when ok they ban it?

I don’t get the non thinking going on in the west today. It can only be explained by prescription drug abuse turning everyone’s brains into mush

Yeah, promote women, uh – huh. That’s the only reason one could ever do a shoot like this.

By the way, why are women so weak as to need promotion? It‘s the men’s fault, eh?

Feminism and Islam and Fundies all want women to cover up and pretend they are not feminine.

But there is nothing wrong with being feminine. She’s not being obscene. She’s not even violating any common community standards of decency if she were at the beach.

But then again, this is Ontario… maybe they don’t know what people are supposed to wear to the beach.

I can’t believe the college would have punished those folks so harshly for something as mild as that.

Have they never been to a car show, or read a car magazine, or even looked at ads for cars?

It must have been something much, much worse that the college found out about them, like maybe they were conservatives or tea party sympathizers.

So can anyone tell me if that school promotes “diversity” aka. GLBT lifestyle choice as protected class? If they do then they have no moral ground to suspend a race team over something like a bikini shoot.
