‘Shameful’: John McCain Renews Calls to Arm Syrian Rebels as Violence Increases

John McCain Renews Calls to Arm Syrian Rebels Against Bashar al Assad on CNN With Candy Crowley | Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Weighs In

(Photo: AP)

Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) is slamming President Obama’s handling of the crisis in Syria, where a revolution against the ruler Bashar al-Assad has turned into a full-fledged civil war.

In McCain’s opinion, the United States should be doing more to aid the rebel forces, and inaction has only led to a more dangerous situation in the Middle East.

Politico summarizes McCain‘s interview with CNN’s Candy Crowley:

Sen. John McCain… said on Sunday the situation in Syria has “deteriorated” and the United States needs to assist by providing “arms and equipment.”

“What do we need to do? We need to get arms and equipment to them [and] we need to establish a buffer zone,” McCain said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The United States has waited far too long to act, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee said.

“Because of our failure to assist, because of our failure to lead other willing nations in the region like Turkey or Saudi Arabia or Qatar and others, this situation has now deteriorated to a situation which is really, really very, very dangerous,” McCain said. “I think it’s retrievable, but I think it’s far, far more complicated and difficult than if we had weighed in a long time ago.”

Watch the interview, via the left-leaning blog “Crooks and Liars,” below:

But will overthrowing the current regime lead to a more stable situation?

There have been numerous reports of al-Qaeda members joining the opposition to overthrow the “secular” ruling regime, and multiple videos seemingly corroborate that, at the very least, the opposition has some pretty fanatical characters.

Over the weekend it was reported that the opposition had pushed its way to Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

The week’s violence pushed the death toll for the uprising above 19,000, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The group also said July is likely to be the conflict’s deadliest month so far, with more than 2,750 people killed in the first three weeks – nearly as many as in the previous month.

Benjamin Netanyahu weighed in on Fox News Sunday, warning that chaos surrounding Assad‘s fall could allow Hezbollah to access Syria’s chemical weapons.

“That this is something we’ll have to act to stop if the need arises,” he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Agreed, we have no business getting involved in there own battles. McCain yet again draws attention to, yet again, another dummy argument rather than focus more on our own security at our borders in his home state. McCain is too out of touch to realize what really needs to be addressed.

I’m not sure exactly where McCain is coming from. Syria has had an iron-hard dictatorship for decades and a large, well equiped and seasoned military supplied by the Russians to maintain control. Does anyone really think that there is some ragtag group of civilians who banded together and come together and have brought Syria’s regime to verge of collapse?

McCain knows that the US and other western countries have people on the ground there and are pumping in arms and intelligence. Thanks to President Obama Al Qaeda is impotent, but I can imagine other sources of support for the rebels, such as our ally Saudi Arabia and our ally Turkey, who have a leadership happy to support both sides, verbally on ours, materially on the side of the rebels. They win no matter what happens.

Anyway, I‘m not sure what McCain’s real point is. But anyone who thinks the US and other western nations aren’t involved with this should read up on history of how we deal with regional conflicts to influence the outcome in our favor. The US isn’t talking about it for diplomatic reasons, but you can be sure we’re involved with that conflict.

Whatever support they have is from countries that have something to sell, like oil. And President Obama has killed most of their upper management. Mitt Romney urges US to arm Syrian rebels, lead effort to oust Bashar Assad
    05/29/2012 4:06 PM

    By Callum Borchers, Globe Correspondent

Mitt Romney has renewed his call for the United States to arm Syrians rebelling against the regime of Bashar Assad, after more than 100 people were massacred in the village of Houla last Friday.

“President Obama can no longer ignore calls from congressional leaders in both parties to take more assertive steps,” Romney said Sunday. “The [Kofi] Annan ‘peace’ plan — which President Obama still supports — has merely granted the Assad regime more time to execute its military onslaught. The United States should work with partners to organize and arm Syrian opposition groups so they can defend themselves.”

Comrades, I hate to say this but our candidate is a Progressive (Communist) Republican (shock) (Horror). What the devil did you think they would run, George Washington?
He may be better than Dear Leader, heck, he will probably be far better than Dear Leader, but he isn’t a true conservative, so don’t expect this zebra to change his stripes.
Truthfully, if you believe he, or anyone, can change this countries direction, you are sadly mistaken! By the time Conservative Republican Regan became President he was unable to stop the direction we were moving in, or eliminate any of the unconstitutional branches of government, such as, but not limited to, the Dept. of Education. He did pull us back from the brink but I doubt if Romney will have the time to even do that.
Provided there is an election, of course. Communists usually don’t like giving up power, and Dear Leader is nothing if he isn’t a communist!

SCOTTS. I know that Iran and Iraq are spelled very similar (except for the “n” and “q”), but please show me how the Iran-Contra affair had anything to do with Saddam Hussein, Iraq WMD, France supplying weaponry to Iraq? Please provide receipts…

I know, I know… you saw where KID made a comment regarding Iran-Contra and just started typing without really understanding the topic at hand, but saw this as an opportunity to shine and smack down big bad TIME_2… the Ron Paul hater.

This is just further proof that KIDS should be seen but not heard from. Now go back to the kiddie table and drink your apple juice…

Why is it that you only need proof when it’s something you disagree with? For instance, I could say show me proof that Moses talked to a burning bush. Some of it comes down to a leap of faith, no? Heck we’re all still trying to sort stuff out. Obviously I’m listening to the CIA, Intel folks on this stuff. Sheuer, Kwaitkowski, and Johnson. I mean I know you two like talking about your experience as to why you know more than everyone else, but I had the same clearance, and think you both are trying to pull the wool over peoples’ eyes in that regard because your need to know was limited. I know the game. As I understand it, Mustard gas is simple to produce. I mean it was WW1 technology and just concentrated bleach and chlorine as I understand it. Biologicals and blood agents not so much and the people with knowlege of that stuff are in Russia and the US. Still it doesn‘t make sense that Iraq would give their enemy’s friends their WMD’s to babysit. Then you have people in the administration admitting they were wrong and/or lied. (Bush/Powell) Then you both jump on Manning, which I agree did it the wrong way. You jump on him for his treasonous acts, but ignore the treasonous acts contained in the dump, and say the people he outed are to be trusted?

I for one do find it puzzling that we were quick to jump into Libya and Egypt but not Syria or Iran in their time of need. It would seem quite alienating to any of our allies to say the least.

Your typical response is filled with ignorant statements and zero facts. Please provide the link with Ron Paul saying we should ignore anyone. This is another false claim liberals and progressives like yourself like to say about Ron Paul because you know his ideas are changing this country. In the end the Liberty Movement is going to win. We will win either from the ballot box or the ammo box.

MUTINEER. You feakin’ kill me with this “link” nonsense. If it ain’t provided on a link, well then… it can’t possibly be true!! What I and most Americans try to do is take Ron Paul’s purposely vague musings and mumblings and try our hardest to make sense out of them. Most Americans like myself have come to the conclusion (sifting through his atmospheric rhetoric) that he is a guy who wouldn’t do SQUAT outside the protection of our borders.

Fact is MUTINEER. Ron Paul doesn’t know the difference between isolationism and protectionism, but he call himself a “non-interventionist” which in my estimation based on what I’ve heard him state is “do nothing”… let the world fight it out, stick your head in the dirt until they come for us.

His mentor Rothbard (who Paul mirrors his lunacy with) stated once that if the balloon went up and we lost the rest of the world and the Soviets invaded America… we could take to the hills, launch a guerilla war a la freakin’ “Red Dawn.” Lmao… Libertarians have NEVER been hampered by reality eh MUTINEER?

Ron Paul may be delusional, but he is consistently delusional. Neither mass murder, terrorism, the advance of militant Islam, nor nuclear weapons in the hands of fanatical regimes will shake a Libertarian’s faith in his dogma… we have no foreign enemies. If certain states want to kill us, it’s our fault. Nothing is worth fighting for…unless of course… it’s abolishing the Fed.

What countries can realistically attack the United States? Outside of terrorist attacks no country can attack us in my opinion. Our military overseas doesnt not protect us from terrorist attacks. In fact our occupation of some nations causes terrorist to rise up. A perfect example is Osama Bin Laden declaring war on the United States in 1998 for that very reason. 15 of 18 hijackers on 911 were Saudi.

You can continue to ignore facts but its not head in the sand, but I believes its head on a swivel. We are so focused on the middle east we are forgetting about our southern border. By electing the lesser of two evils so often we have politicians willing to give our freedoms away. We have DHS buying 400million rounds of ammo and bullet proof check point booths.

If anything we need our military home for the coming collapse we are going to face. We will need to them to protect us here at home from the government. Our only chance to save this country is the military not turning on the people.

MUTINEER. Nice mish-mash of Ron Paul anti-war bullet points.

You wrote…. “If anything we need our military home for the coming collapse we are going to face. We will need to them to protect us here at home from the government. Our only chance to save this country is the military not turning on the people.”

You better huddle with your fellow anti-war/Military Paul acolytes and decide if our Military is for us… or against us. The Ron Paul gene pool seems to be out on that one…

Would hate to pull ALL those murderous malcontents and miscreants from the Military back here with bayonets fixed and charging towards us eh?

Ron Paul and his warriors for peace and tranquility speak out of both sides of your anti-war/Military mouths… not unlike the other left. Hate the Military one day…. kind of love them the next.

Palin endorsed McCain over a tea party challenger in the AZ senate 2010 primary AFTER McCain and Romney threw her REPEATEDLY under the bus in 2008 and 2009. Romney did NOT want her to be a challenger when he ran again in 2012.

Palin purchased a AZ home and may be establishing residency to run there and will need McCain help if she did run. So she threw American under the bus and endorsed a RINO who never met a war he didn’t like.

Well sure McCain let’s give more arms to the muslim brotherhood so they can run over the people as soon as they take the current leader out. Geeeeez, what a dope. Has he been watching what happens as these governments fall? They are sure as heck not perfect, but the coming joining of all these muslim countries, filled with hate for us and using weapons we have given them isn’t to darn smart. Thank God he didn’t become president. One, we needed the wake-up call, and two, he does not get the muslims at all and still thinks they are good people, and our “friends”

Clay: Perhaps to put this in a more PC phraseology : if dysfunctional humans wish to kill equally dysfunctional humans, why should we interfere ? These people hate us for our ” parental / aka imperialist ” interference. Maybe we should just “prepare ” over here and let them do their own “sorting out ” over there. We have put the same time and tax money into trying to solve the Middle East religious / territorial mess as we have bled ourselves dry trying to fight our so-called War on Poverty. Same results : Zero . The “poor we will always have with us .” And perhaps, ” the dysfunctional we will also always have with us.” Tired of paying for both as one of the 53% .
