Shariah Compliant? Major D.C. Complex Won’t Lease to Banks, Bars

A major development project in downtown Washington will not be leasing space to banks or bars once it’s completed, a move that happens to comply with the tenets of Shariah law prohibiting alcohol or collecting interest — the same project a Qatari investment firm is bankrolling.
In April, the Washington Times reported the Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company put up $700 million to fund the CityCenterDC project, six blocks from the White House and slated for completion in late 2013.

A New York Times article last week reported real estate companies Hines Interests and Archstone decided they would not lease space in the complex to banks or to “retailers whose primary business involves selling alcohol.”
Even before the Qatari investors became involved, Hines and Archstone determined that leasing to banks would not help them create lively shopping streets, Mr. Alsup said. But as it happened, their hesitancy on bank branches meshed with the policies of their financial partners, who adhere to the restrictions of Shariah, or Islamic law, including the ban on collecting interest. Restaurants will be able to serve liquor, but retailers whose primary business involves selling alcohol will not be allowed, Mr. Alsup said.
The Washington City Paper took notice of this, with real estate reporter Lydia DePillis writing:
[B]anks aren’t all that great for a city streetscape, and it’s admirable that they planned to forego such a dependable and high-rent-paying tenant. It’s less advantageous, though, to not have business devoted primarily to selling alcohol. CityCenterDC is unlikely to be plagued by liquor stores, but it could definitely use a few places to be out at night drinking without getting a full dinner. Could Qatari money turn CityCenterDC into more of a black hole than the last piece of the puzzle in a living downtown?
On Friday, Salon writer Alex Pareene ribbed the news, and predicted an “overblown right-wing outrage.”
Shariah law, a stone’s throw from the U.S. Capitol. I am assuming the Times just neglected to mention that in addition to banning bars from the complex, all women will be required to wear the niqab, and obviously all infidels will be murdered, while shopping at the Apple store or whatever ends up there. And no dancing!
Pareene said he was surprised it hadn’t attracted more conservative interest, or that “Pamela Geller hasn’t written a lengthy screed about it” on her blog, Atlas Shrugs.
Geller took up the issue Sunday:

Please relax. the vast majority of American Muslims are no threat to anyone.
The ones I know feel like the Jews in Germany during the early 30′s; VERY WORRIED about the growing hatred directed at them. You should, at least, try to met a Muslim and get to know them. You’d would be amazed at what this will do for your understanding and sanity. American Muslims, mostly, just want to live free and be left alone. I’m sure you can relate.
And, yes, I have been to Dearborn, MI and was able to eat bacon at a Waffle House, drink booze at a pub, make love to a beautiful woman of Islamic heritage (yes she‘s still alive and wasn’t killed by her family for copulating with a white infidel atheist, in case you’re wondering) and, generally, did as I pleased without being beheaded or harassed. I encourage all to go and check it out.
Glenn Beck should go to Dearborn, MI instead of Israel.
Israel can fend for itself. They’ll be fine.
American Muslims, on the other hand, are in danger by the very same people who support/watch/listen to Beck.
If you want to emulate Dietrich Bonhoeffer and stand for “courage” then get to know your fellow Americans who happen to be Muslim and defend them against the tyranny they have tried to escape and that so many here are now preaching.

And then a few young promising muslims flew planes into buildings. And so on and on. Muslims in London protested that we killed Osama. There are large tracts of French and Australian cities where the police can no longer go into. Why? Because they are run by muslim gangs supported by a populace that does not recognize the existing ‘infidel’ government. But I suppose those European and Down Under muslims are somehow worse than here in America.
Ask yourself if, as an infidel, you would have been permitted to make love to a muslim girl in any Islamic country? Forget the sex…you would be lucky to walk the street with your head down hoping not to be noticed. You do know what the Koran teaches with regards to how non believers are to be subjegated or killed? Don‘t give credit for being accomodating when their numbers aren’t there to act as they please. Consider the disparity between the treatment of infidels in muslim lands and muslims in christian lands.

If you want to lay the legal foundation by banning one religious interpretation then, I can assure you, there are many very well educated people just waiting to extend the ban to all religions. Which, if that first shoe were to ever drop, I would the support a ban on christianity on the grounds that it is tyrannical, undemocratic and unamerican..
But I’d rather it not go down that road. That is a nightmare. One of the cornerstones of our Republic is religious freedom for all. If one faith is willing to criminalize another faith, then the persecuting faith is just as dangerous as the pervieved threat of the other and is treasonist.
You should read up on history as well. Particularly how complacent and involved the Christians of Europe were in the rise of Facsism and Nazism.
More female companionship might lesson your aggression as well.

If you knew anything about Islam you would know that it is much more than a “religion” in the western sense of the word. Islam applies to almost all aspects of society, of which spirituality is a small part. You atheists always moan about Christians wanting a theocracy, but then defend the very ‘religion’ that creates them wherever it thrives.
I think you’ve been reading too many liberal history books. Tell what you said to the thousands of christian priests and ministers that were murdered by the Nazis. Next I suppose you will say that Pope Pius XII was a Nazi supporter? Maybe you should compare what your liberal professors and authors say to what the newspapers of the day, including the NY Times, were saying about the pope before, during and after the war. And it is fairly pathetic to see Godless wonders, such as yourself, trashing the very religion that provided the framework for the society which you enjoy, and defending a 7th century cult that diametrically opposed to those freedoms.
If I sound aggressive it‘s because I’m tired of watching my country and children’s future being destroyed by people such as yourself. I saw a bumper sticker once. You pass laws to prevent Muslims from practicing their beliefs within a free enterprise business setting it would move one step closer to the lefts plans to eliminate all religious freedoms. Seventh Day Adventists or Rastafarians, etc who do not sell alcohol or pork would have to be punished. Jews with their kosher laws would have to be punished for not serving pork.
More laws to take away people’s rights is the progressive way, if you promote this sort of thing it makes you a rhino or progressive.

Would you have a problem with a business which refused to sell or serve pork for religious reasons?

I have heard of any number of businesses run by Baptists or other fundamentalist types who would sell/serve liquor, tobacco, porn, etc. (Although I‘m guessing ammo wasn’t off-limits.)

On the way I saw drunks sleeping in front of a liquor store, homeless people pushing shopping carts, crack heads were sitting on the curb, etc. I was the only White person in the grocery store and people were staring at me. On my way home I encountered a Gay Rights Celebration that was starting near a long line of port-o-potties. At dusk, the criminals and drug dealers take over.
The stores in the mall do not have cement barracades and have glass fronts. These are tempting targets for mob robberies, crash and dash, or terrorist explosives. When the race riots start in a year or two, these glass windows will be replaced with plywood assuming the buildings won’t burn.

If the people investing their money don’t want to lease to a particular type of business, so be it. It is their money. It will be interesting to see if they are permitted to refuse space to Jews or other infidels.
I wouldn’t have a problem with that either if 1) Islam was compatible with our form of government and they had any business here in the first place and 2) the govt wasn’t already in the business of telling everyone who they can hire or lease to. People and businesses should be able to discriminate if they want to.

Anything backed by Shariah law should be BANNED in the U.S. As their belief is the “law” and they do not believe the constitution applies to them in any way, they have no place in our society.

Au contraire, little troll, and apparent defender of all things Muslim–as the story says, it is a violation of DC law for public buildings to impose religious restrictions, so why do you think they should get a pass on this? Secondly, allowing Shariah Law to get its nose under the tent in this fashion is just inviting the whole camel in. It is also against the Constitution for anybody to attempt to implement a foreign law that takes precedence over the Constitution, so this one is illegal on TWO counts.
I don’t really care how close it is to the White House or the Capital either–since both are so full of Communist Pro-Islamic Jihad A$$ HOLES, it would scarcely matter.

You may not like it but as a private owner it is their right. Much like in the case of the Mosque….if you own the land and can get permits for it, what right does someone else have to dictate to you what you can put up.
