Sharia Prom? Mich. School Holds All-Girls Dance to Accommodate Students’ Islamic Beliefs

The New York Times recently featured a story about a Michigan high school prom. But why would a national outlet feature a local prom? Because it had “everything, except for boys.”
Meant to accommodate the religious beliefs of the school’s females — roughly 65% of whom would not have been able to go to a conventional prom, where boys and girls dance together — the event was the product of seven months of feverish planning and fundraising led primarily by Tharima Ahmed, who describes herself as “outspoken.”
The Times explains:
As organizer of Hamtramck High School’s first all-girl prom, which conforms to religious beliefs forbidding dating, dancing with boys or appearing without a head scarf in front of males, Tharima, 17, was forging a new rite of passage for every teenage Muslim girl who had ever spent prom night at home, wistfully watching the limousines roll by.
“Hi, guys — I mean girls!” Tharima, a Bangladeshi-American, exuded into the microphone as 100 girls — Yemeni-American, Polish-American, Palestinian-American, Bosnian-American and African-American — began pouring into the hall on Bangladesh Avenue.
The New York Times video, below, features an interview with Ahmed and the city’s mayor on the event:
Describing the girls‘ excitement at seeing one another’s dresses, the Times continued:
In this season of wobbly heels and cleavage, the bittersweet transformation of teenagers in jeans and T-shirts into elegant adults barely recognizable to their friends is an anticipated tradition.
But at the all-girl prom, there were double double-takes, as some of Tharima’s classmates, normally concealed in a chrysalis of hijab and abaya, the traditional Muslim cloak, literally let their hair down in public for the first time.
Eman Ashabi, a Yemeni-American who helped organize the event, arrived in a ruffled pink gown, her black hair falling in perfect waves, thanks to a curling iron. Like many here, she stunned her friends.
“It’s ‘Oh my god!’ ” said Simone Alhagri, a Yemeni-American junior who was wearing a tight shirred dress. “This is how you look underneath!”
The event was a resounding success, according to most of the girls. The music played all night, and they stopped dancing only for dinner and prayers.
“It was really fantastic to see all of the girls who were there having so much fun and really enjoying themselves and, you know, being able to just dance if they want to dance and talk to who they want to talk to,” the school’s English teacher said. “They really had a great time. It was really wonderful because, otherwise, they really wouldn’t have been to a prom at all.”
And while everyone is happy that the girls were able to have a fun night out, others ask whether the school and the New York Times would have been equally supportive of accommodating Christian or Jewish religious beliefs? Still others ask whether this is part of what some have termed “creeping shariah,” where Islamic law is slowly introduced to the American mainstream?
What do you think?

Okay, the point isn’t necessarily the segregation. How many girls dream of going to an all girl prom? I wouldn’t call that an all American dream. I’d bet that the majority, if not ALL of the girls attending were muslim. The prom has scheduled prayer breaks.
If you still think that‘s not such a big deal than you’re either still a Leftist, or you’re a muslim pushing taqiyya.

Considering the attacks and the outright legally forbidding anything Christian in the same school. This event is strictly about their religion. On school property. If Christians in that community do not stand up and demand the identical privileges i.e., a Christian prom then they deserve no better than they are getting today. No matter how much ground you give there is always someone willing to take it.

In my area, the Latter Day Saints have their own prom, usually at a Stake Center. Sometimes it is a multi-stake activity.
The young men and women have a blast!!
The proms held by the local high schools often include inappropriate music, dress and dancing, so we have our own.
I have never heard of any of the area youths protesting or bringing a formal complaint to the school board.
I believe most people hear are stunned at how the left won’t allow Christian expressions of faith, but seem to do their best to accommodate the Muslim community. To some it seems like a double standard.

They are only concerned with Christian, Jewish, or in general any of the original founding belief systems.
Maybe cowering in fear while they crush Christian rights is the wrong path. Bob Marley had it figured out when He wrote Get Up, Stand Up.
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight
Preacher man don’t tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don’t know
What life is really worth
It’s not all that glitters is gold
Half the story has never been told
So now you see the light
Stand up for your rights
Complaining that satans minions in the ACLU, education, the media, the government, and in the invading hoards are refusing to defend Christians is as effective as yelling at an F5 tornado to go away. They hate God and they hate us. If we do not protest about the persecution of our beliefs the way they do about theirs who in the end is really to blame? How ironic Christians complain satan will not defend their rights by saying ‘where is the ACLU’ instead of standing up for their God on earth themselves. I mean really where are the crowds protesting as lawsuits tear down every last vestige of Christianity from American soil? Talk about going out with a whimper. Don’t forget to turn the light off as you leave the green fanatics might complain about global warming again.

I’m not trying to be flippant, but why would homosexuality be ‘rare’ among the Arabs? I am led to believe that it is more ‘genetic’ differentiation than lifestyle choice, therefore I would think it should be evenly distributed amongst all races.
But, then again, I’m sure your comment was said in humor, because it did make me giggle.

The problem for the “It’s not innate! Is that not a CHOICE as well?

Conservatives are optimists. We understand that when the constitution is respected we’re all free. When freedom is respected, the culture it produces is diverse and SO powerfully seductive, that it has succeeded in converting every immigrant group to have ever arrived here within a single generation. If we don’t try to enforce belief, but rather demonstrate respect for all beliefs that don’t translate into criminal behavior, then they WILL become part of us in their own way, and a mojority will never happen.

Report Post »Totally fair point, and I agree! The question is how to deal with the systematic denial of freedom to women in Muslim cultures. I for one, think govt force will backfire, as it does in every other domain. Do you not recognize that if teenage girls can convince their parents and Imams to allow a Halal sort of prom, that those parents and imams have already conceded the eventual emancipation of the adult women those teens will become?
On the other hand, pointing out to them how they should be allowing these girls even MORE freedom IS fair game. But let’s be persuasive rather than attempting force is all…
ohiowordguy
Posted on May 7, 2012 at 8:48pmYou’re ignoring a number of glaring double standards.
If the headline was, “Jewish girls hold separate prom,” the ACLU would have sued to prevent it from happening. Keep in mind this IS a public school. I checked.
Next, there is the issue of prayers held in a public school. Again, substitute ANY other religion and the Left would have sued. Imagine a “Christian girls prom,” complete with prayers in the gymnasium.
And what about excluding a particular gender from an event held at a public school, merely in an effort to accommodate the cultural sensibilities of a religious group? Can you say, “Separate but equal?”
I think this event violated the Constitution’s equal protection clause, even if it was held with privately raised funds. Substitute “black” for “boys.“ ”No B—- were allowed” Would ANY court allow a group of students to be excluded because of race or religion? Of course not! So why would a school allow a gender-specific event to be held?
I’ll tell you why: Because they are bowing down to Islam. Nobody wants to say no to the Muslims.
This is a glaring example of creeping Sharia. If you read the NYT article it talks about all kinds of hyphenated-Americans from all over the globe. Make no mistake: These Muslim immigrants have no interest whatsoever in being Americans. They want to be Muslims in America. Huge distinction.
The school’s position should have been this: “The prom is on this date. Come or don’t come. Your choice.”

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 3:33pmThis is the problem, people come here and won’t assimilate and become American ,they want to change us.“Hi, guys — I mean girls!” Tharima, a Bangladeshi-American, exuded into the microphone as 100 girls — Yemeni-American, Polish-American, Palestinian-American, Bosnian-American and African-American — began pouring into the hall on Bangladesh Avenue. This paragraph illustrates the problem as well and it will evolve into our courts and already has in some states.

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 3:33pmSo we can accomodate the Christian kids and allow them to hold Bible studies and pray during games, graduations, Christmas pagents, etc? If the answer is no, then they shouldn’t be holding this event either…

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 9:04pmPick up a newspaper sometime. Christians can not pray, hold Bible studies, or display Christian symbols on school grounds on the chance it would offend a Muslim. This is the same religion that required the faithful to seal the burning girl’s school in Saudi Arabia and refused to allow the girls to run from the fire into the street… because they didn’t have their heads covered… and we honor this sick religion???? Wake up people!!!

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 3:31pmThey can do what they want, but what happened to America being a “melting pot”. I thought being a melting pot was one of the great qualities of OUR country. Seems like America (or immigrants who don’t like their country but yet want OUR country to turn into their country) has turned itself into a big ol’ Salad Bowl. Doesn’t being a salad bowl seem like this would to lead to segregation. I don’t like the tomatos and croutons, so I would like to get rid of them please. What happened to equal. Boys are not allowed??? Since when in America can we segregate by gender???

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 3:25pmWhy does the school have to foot the bill for such a thing? Why does the school have to be involved at all? Have the REAL, American style prom at the school and then let whatever subcultures there may be go off and have their little niche proms simultaneously, or sequentially, so long as the members of that subculture and that subculture alone bore the full brunt of the financial and planning burden to make it happen.
I would feel the same way if the school’s LGBT community wanted to have an LGBT and allies prom separate from the regular prom. Of course, in that case, it would likely be more of a situation where everyone ELSE wanted the LGBTs to stay away rather than the LGBTs wanting to stay away from everyone else.

The article said the funding was raised by a committee; the school did not pay. They did support the efforts, but not monetarily.
“The dance was the denouement of seven months of feverish planning in which a committee raised $2,500, mostly through bake sales.”
Furthermore, it was implied that this was the “alternative” prom:
“They found that 65 percent were not able to attend the coed prom because of cultural and religious beliefs. After discussion, the school supported the student-driven alternative.”
As only 100 students out of 900 attended (and all of those were girls, obviously), it’s likely that there was a traditional Prom as well.

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 3:37pmThis is pathetic, and ridiculous to accomodate. Agree with others who say fine, have one, but the school shouldn’t bear the cost. Besides that—how many of them had a problem with the men in their family because they weren’t accompanied by a man in public?

And in 20 years it will be the entirety of southern Michigan, and then liberal bleeding heart crybabies will say, “What do you want to do, ship them ALL back to their countries?! You can’t do that, some of them were born here!” CLOSE THIS COUNTRY TO MUSLIMS NOW.
