Shock Surveillance Video Shows LAPD Officers Body-Slamming ‘Defenseless Woman’ Into the Pavement During Violent Arrest

A startling video that is making its rounds shows two Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers snatching a female driver and violently slamming her body into the ground — twice. The woman’s alleged offense? Talking on her cell phone while driving and, subsequently, resisting arrest. As a result of the trauma, Michelle Jordan, 34, sustained intensive bruising and other related blemishes and injuries.

The incident unfolded after the registered nurse and mother was apparently seen by authorities using her phone while operating her vehicle — an action that is banned by law in the State of California. Officers followed her car into the parking lot of a Del Taco restaurant in Tujunga, California, on August 21, where the arrest then took place. The entire incident, according to the Daily Mail, was captured on surveillance video.

Jordan, who is 5-feet 4-inches, apparently didn‘t listen to officers’ commands (or so say officials looking into the matter). After she got out of her vehicle, she purportedly was told to get back inside. When she refused, the male officers slammed Jordan onto the ground and then handcuffed her. But the bizarre incident didn’t end there. She was then slammed again into the ground.

Despite a failure to purportedly listen to officers’ commands, Police Chief Charlie Beck issued a statement earlier this week claiming that he has “serious concerns” about how the scenario was handled. He pledged to investigate the force used and to “hold…officers accountable for their actions.”

The woman’s lawyer, Sy Nazif, told The Los Angeles Times via e-mail that the officers should be prosecuted and that his client was a “defenseless woman” who was bashed into the ground without reason.

“If a civilian were to assault a woman in this manner, he would go to jail,” Nazif wrote. “These officers must be held to the same standard. They have to be held accountable.”

“We have a defenseless woman in a sundress, two fully armed police officers with training in various restraining devices that they could have used, and instead they used brutal force to take a woman down to the ground for no reason,” added Arthur Corona, another one of Jordan’s attorneys.

Raymond Branch, a witness who was outside of the Del Taco restaurant when the situation unfolded, said that he was surprised by the use of force. While he claims the arrest was warranted, the violence, in his view, was not.

“The first part, I believe they had a right to arrest her for resisting, but the second part was overboard,” he explained.

Even Nazif admits that the woman made some “unwise moves,” but the force used against her, he contends, simply wasn’t warranted. A police investigation into the matter is in its preliminary stages.

The video shows two muscular thugs beating up a 130 pound handcuffed woman. If the police car was not in the video, we would not know the thugs were masqurading as policemen. The thugs need to be in jail right now, until the investigation is completed

130 lbs, are you kidding me? She goes a buck75 in my book. She was at a Del Taco at 11:15 in the morning. Do you think with a lifestyle like that a 130 frame is sustainable? Zoomba anyone? I mean look at the size of her melon. She‘ll get a 6 figure settlement and buy her own Del Taco with an upstairs apartment where she doesn’t have to drive to eat.

      WALKABOUT

The police in this country do a very dangerous and mostly thankless job. And I personally think the vast majority of men and women in our police forces are good decent people trying to keep us all safe and make our country a better place for everyone. But in this case how do you justify body slamming a woman whose hands are cuffed behind her back? The first body slam she was not cuffed and it appeared she was resisting. People can argue whether the amount of forced used was necessary or not (I personally believe it was excessive). The second time she was body slammed she was cuffed. Are the police involved so poorly trained that they cannot handle a woman with her hands cuffed behind her back without using that amount of force? Do you think she was about to snap the handcuffs like the Hulk and over power the two male police officers?

Ranger Pee will have to agree with your above statement.

There was no cause for the second slam. It is hard to see on the first one if she resisted arrest, or he was just being overzealous.

While I believe the cops on this one should be prosecuted if indeed it was police brutality, I still have no sympathy for idiots that refuse to get back in their vehicle or do what the police tell them to do (as long as it is lawful).

While I have no doubt that the majority of police do dangerous that they think is part of serving the nation and America. The British troops did and thought the same thing when they patroled OUR TOWNS AND CITIES before the great war for freedom. Fact of the matter is the Police pulled this woman over for a victimless crime (a non-crime by any measure) because so liberal douche thought that by taking a freedom we might make someone safer…..This their attempt at preventing a car accident before it happens. And criminalizing someone for what might happen as well. Look I understand perfectly the danger and fact is if they wanted to create a law that added time or fines to sentence if someone caused accident while using and pohone and driving I’m fine with that but this pre-crime crap is not American it’;s communist

By any measure. So if actuaries compared the driving record of people who never used cellphones while driving with those that did they would find no statistical difference in accident rates or accident severity.

So when there is a accident lawyers do not get the cell phone records of the other side in attempt to prove they were on a a cell phone during the accident & distracted driving cause the accident. Police reconstructing accidents do not obtain cell phone records, they just measure skid marks.

Newspapers do not ever print stories of people involved in accidents in one or multiple car crashes cause by them texting or on the cell phone.

Talking in a cellphone is never distracted driving. Maybe we should give awards for multi-tasking! :)

State legislatures in many states not just liberal California consider cell phone usage while driving is dangerous. They do not consider this totally victimless.

It will be a moot point to talk on a cell phone while in a car if & only if cars become self guided (in a bout 20 years). That is if environMENTALists allow us to have cars!

Once again, not condoning police violence, I am a little surprised at how many Blaze folks that post, never seem to see any blame on these knuckle heads that ignore police (lawful) instructions.

If you are going to drive a car, you do so, agreeing to follow the laws. These laws include speed restriction, not driving under the influence, following traffic signs… This is done for the safety of the rest of us on the road.

Most people that drive as adults, will at some point in their life get pulled over for some infraction. 99.9% of us, get our ticket, or our warning, and go on to drive another day. I do not understand this small percent that think they are special, and can get out of their car, cuss out the police, talk on their phones. This small percentage then want to turn around, and soak the tax payer for a big law suit, because they threw their little hissy fit, and got slammed on their head.

If you disagree with the ticket, we have a system to be heard. You show up in court, and plead your case, and often times get a lesser fine, or no fine. It is a fair system.

Cops have you stay in the car for your safety and theirs. What is up with the trophy generation of the “me first crowd” that thinks they can get out and run the show.

I guess when mommy and daddy never took a paddle and wore that butt out, we end up with a population of morons that think they always get their way

I don’t make a move to my purse or glove box for ID or proof of insurance, I don’t move until they tell me. They don’t know me. I might be armed, driving a stolen vehicle, running from the police, they don’t know. By not following instructions, or even asking them to be repeated, it puts doubts in their minds. So why didn’t the second cop arrest the first cop?

      God forbid right?

It’s only us serfs that are subject to rules and regulations. A cop would never betray the brotherhood to arrest a cop who committed a crime right in front of him. Heck no.

Stasticly speaking most accidents happen with a mile of where people live.
Maybe they pass a law requiring people park more than a mile awy from where they live as to make them safe

      Walkabout,
the point is where does the non-crime laws stop. And Yes Drunk driving laws are BS as well. A cop sees someone swurving and driving poorly pulls him over finds he drunk (actually) by all means arrest for Drunk in public then let his insurance punish him.
A cop pulls someone over blown taillight and smells alcohol he require he do a field breath test and send the result to the insurance company.
A cop ata license check point smell alcohol on a person he should do the same.
If cop pull over someone for a blown taillight he smell alcohol and fines the person has no insurance imbound the car and make the person get insurance to get it out. And of course let the insurance company know the breate results.
And in all case cell phone or alcohol should tack on time and fines if they are found to be factors in the accident.
These nazist tactic are costing the tax payers a fortune and destroying liberty……..It‘s not the government job nor should it have the power to regulate activities so long as they don’t create victims.

RANGERP WALKABOUT and anyone else that would like to answer I would like to ask you a question. I don’t understand how people’s minds work sometimes. The progressives/liberals want more and more government control and inclusion in everyday life, but they usually condemn any police action as being police brutality. Here at the Blaze a lot of people that I agree with on a lot of issues involving smaller less intrusive government and following the Constitution seem to support anything the police do. I praise the police when they do a great job; which is most of the time. I also criticize the police when they overstep and cross the line. I see no way to defend the second slam to the ground with the woman’s hands cuffed behind her back, but a lot of people find it justified because she used bad language and did not fully cooperate. How is the left any different than the right if both sides just dig in and defend anything their side does? We must learn to return to a justice system where everyone is held to the same rules. I may be just too idealistic; I used to believe my side was morally superior to the left, now I don’t know. To many people now days trivialize things like this. Comments like she was fat, she voted for Obama, she has a fowl mouth therefore she brought this on herself, she deserved it. I taught my kids when they were young and now my grandkids if they needed help and I wasn’t there find a police officer and they would help them. I don’t think it aski

Hmm… I’ll throw my hat in the ring on this. BOTH sides need to remember the golden rule (within reason). When the cops come a callin, “Yes, sir“ or”No, sir” will suffice. Stay calm and such encounters can be swift and painless. Run, put on a show or spout off… you wanna work that shovel and dig your own hole, have it. I enjoy watching some idiots make a bad situation worse. Can you expect professionalism, restraint and poise from all cops? Uh, no… gamble as you will.
Think of if this way: If a couple of U.S. soldiers acted like this in the Middle Easten theater, what would likely come of them? Oh, yeah. Those hypothetical soldiers would be toast. And the civilian would be a poster child for unwarranted ham-fistedness (and, as we’re often reminded, recruiting for the ‘bad’ guys). So U.S. citizens are less valuable, or domestic govt. agents have relatively no bounds? No different rules for different people. Bye-bye, tough guys. This incident should not be used as a wacky defense for cops to be painted as poor, frazzled victims. The cops crossed the proverbial line; BOTH sides own their behavior, but the boys in blue are supposed to be trained professionals. This isn’t the ECW or UFC tryouts.
And stop driving when using your damn cell phone. That may just merit one body slam.

Cops suffer from an inferiority complex, they aren’t educated, and they get off on bullying people. The cop brain never considers analytical thinking, logical reasoning, or even a rational thought for that matter. People who can’t think for themselves generally become cops. They signed up as cops just so they could beat up and shoot people. They love using their guns to kill people. You cannot reason with or question a cop. Remember, they have an inferiority complex so there is no place for a civil conversation – they must shout and talk down to you to make you feel inferior. Do not attempt to have a civil conversation with them – it raises contempt in the cop heart. Some citizens just shut up and take it, the ones that ask questions are body slammed, tasered, and shot (in that order). The cop brain has no “on/off” switch so their aggressive behavior leads to domestic violence at home. Just because you‘re a family member doesn’t mean you’re safe – Remember, a cop trusts no one and suspects everyone is always breaking the law. Wives and girlfriends are brutally beaten at home. The cop brain knows no equal and will not tolerate any questioning or criticism. Citizens caught in the line of fire between actual criminals and cops will get shot by the cops – especially if the cop hasn’t shot anyone in the past 12 hrs, that’s when withdrawals set in.

You have an officer wrestling with a suspect & he goes for your gun and this happens once, twice, whatever & you here about it happening to other officer then the actions of irate, uncooperative, hostile people gives a person a different perspective.

So public editor Arthur Brisbane should defer to the New York times managing editor & staff.

The officer saw the cell phone illegally used. The law was passed by the duly elected state legislature. Cell phone records can be subpoenaed& it can be shown the phone was used during this time. An act that the state legislature has determined put public safety at risk. It can be show statistically ^& form accident investigations too. In short probably cause established!

The enforcement mentality taking hold in this country is directly attributable to the amount of criminals we now have in uniform.

First many (maybe not 50+% ) would not like the increased risk. Second when someone was on their hone & it was a fatality accident their life would be effectively over after the civil lawsuit is complete. That is much worse than a ticket.

Some people would rather resolve this thru criminal court & civil lawsuit after the fact other don‘t they elect legislatures to enact laws like this because their risk tolerance isn’t the same as yours big guy.

Thats the national law enforcement memorial fund website. 36 percent decrease in fatalities for 2012 august 30th from august 30th 2011

The cops put their lives on the line that means they need to make sure they are in danger before they use deadly force. Yes I said deadly force because if a citizen slammed an officer like that they would be justified in shooting said civilian.

The deadliest year in law enforcement history was 1930, when 290 officers were killed. That figure dropped dramatically in the 1990s, to an average of 161 per year.

In the thirties it was far more dangerous to be a cop but do you think this is how they treated citizens then. Crime has been dropping since the thirties and police tactics are becoming more brutal does that make sense.

We have become a Police State. We have WAY too many laws. Talking on a cell phone while driving? This is stupid! Every state already has laws on the books prohibiting “distracted driving.” What about talking to a passenger while driving, eating some fries, putting on lipsick? To take two officers out of circulation to trail, cite and harrass drivers is a waste of money and resources. To be sure, ANYONE told to stay put by the police should stay put! The world we live in will have your ass kicked by the cops for not listening. It’s a fact of life in America that the cops can kick the crap out anyone for anything. Every Police Academy teaches restraint techniques that could have been employed in this case. Beating this woman so badly is not justified and these idiots should be held accountable. This is a great example of exessive force. This is not the type of crime I want our Police to be fighting!

How about every State and the Federal Government just take a year off? No new laws! In fact, they could just use the year to go back through all the laws on the books and repeal the dumb ones. In 2011, the Feds added 80,000 pages of NEW laws. We have more laws on the books than China! So, how about a year with NO new laws and a pledge to throw out the dumb ones!? Can I git an Amen!

If the states passed no such laws it will become common usage & practice to refrain from using cell phones while driving. Insurance agents & lawyers will see to it. It will take longer, but it would happen.

WALKABOUT, VANCEUPPERCUT aka Chrissy Matthews today. Just open mouth and the word racist just pours right out regardless the subject. WALKABOUT, thanks for adding me to your list. Just love it when people who know nothing of our backgrounds just wish that we were the people they suspect us to be. They have no idea that starting in the ’50s both of my parents had careers, who hired a woman to be a part time housekeeper. She helped watch us while doing some household chores, and supervised my two sisters and me to make sure we did our required chores around the house. She happened to have been black and stayed with us for years. When Dad was transferred we moved out of town for two years then returned, and she came back to our family. We grew up playing with her kids from near day one, and when we became teenagers she moved on to another family with smaller children who required such supervision. She attended my father‘s funeral in ’91, and was not physically able to attend my mother‘s funeral in ’96. But, she sent cards and called each of us. She has since passed away, but I know in my heart that I grew up with two mothers, one white, and one black.
As far this story goes, it’s simple. Two wrongs do not make a right. She was wrong, and by what I can tell from the poor quality of the video, at least one of the cops is also wrong.

Resisting arrest is a bogus charge they throw in because she argued with them. There is no reason for them to get that physical with her. What a pathetic group of officers. I wish the blaze would show some stories of police not being pathetic tyrants to balance out these kinds of stories, but maybe there are no such clips. California needs to be ejected from the US.

Lion is correct. “Resisting Arrest” is a bogus charge. If you don’t say “HOW HIGH?!“ when they say ”JUMP!” immediately, they’ll beat you or shoot you and say you resisted. If you don’t genuflect to their “authoritah” immediately, they’ll make any excuse to kill you.

From day one at the Police Academy, we were taught to take verbal abuse from the drill instructors and others. It was explained to us that if you can’t take verbal abuse here in the academy, you have no business being a Police Officer on the street. Taking verbal abuse is a part of being a Police Officer. No one says you have to like it, but you have to be tolerant of it. Clearly, the Officers in this video must have been absent the day when taking verbal abuse training was taught.

      Rangerrp,
People with attitudes like your are EXACTLY the type of people that DON”T need to be cops! If you think that you have the right to cuff someone and then abuse them makes you as bad as these guys. Verbal abuse is part of what goes with the job and if you can‘t control yourself just because you think that someones political opinions don’t match yours then you have a real problem. She didn’t assalt the cop so therefore she should have been arrested and put in the back of the car period. And even if she had touched them a good cop would have used nessesary force, cuffed her, etc and. NOT slammed her on the ground twice. I am freinds with an ex deputy sheriff and these guys could learn a lesson from him – he never raised his voice or lost his temper on a traffic stop and it was always sir or mam no matter what and if force needed used it was alwas just what was nessisary – nothing more – and his veiws, opinions or if he was just having a bad day NEVER entered into the situation – Hell, this man got shot at and still kept his cool! My suggestion to you is get some help for your issues with your intolerance before it gets you in real trouble. Meet force with force – but only when warranted!

Having encountered this “type” of woman who runs her mouth, I could possibly sympathize with the officer who took her down. No officer has ever been discourteous to me, so she either provoked or the guy was too green. But, I sometimes see officers on their phones while driving as well.

I see drug deals going on all day long on a nearby heavily trafficked street that’s fairly well patroled. Why aren’t the more serious crimes/criminals focused on?

The REAL crime areas have officer relation/delegates sent through, yet arrests don’t occur. It‘s as if those areas are so far gone that they can’t be dealt with. I feel for our guys/gals in blue, albeit it’s our politicians fault for not funding and staffing properly. I couldn’t handle seeing the worst in man on a daily basis without going berserk.

Each instance needs to be evaluated on its own merits, Hugh. Concern that the police are too violent does not mean every instance of police violence is intentional and unwarranted. To see the evidence is reason one instance was not brutality does not mean you blindly say all instances are not brutality.

How, exactly, do we move the dialog forward when you paint every instance with the same broad brush and say if everyone else does not use the same broad brush they are what? Hypocrites? Dishonest? Whatever you were implying there.

The video in this instance is practically worthless to make any kind of decision for yourself. It does not look like the woman was impaired or dangerous and it does look like the officer intentionally drover her into the ground. That seems unwarranted. However, the “news” report only showed the take down over and over again with out allowing it to be framed in any context. To me, it appears the cops were overly violent to the level of brutality, but until I can see the whole tape, not even an armchair QB like me should be making any wild assertions.

I do not condone, or have any use for police brutality. Most cops I know are good decent people, but there are some knuckle head dorks that got sand kicked in their face as a kid, who run around with the Barney Fife syndrome.

All of that being said, I also have no sympathy for this new trophy generation of idiots that think everything in life gets to be their way. If you do not want to get slammed on your head, sit in your car, and take your ticket for the infraction you committed. If you think you are going to get out of the car, cuss out the cops, and jaw jack on your phone, do not snivel to me, when you get slammed on the ground. Rothbardian, I agreed with RangerP in the other thread, because in that case he was right. The video I saw was a lone officer dealing with a belligerent drunk who was not cuffed and was presenting a danger to herself, the officer, and any innocent motorist who may have been approaching the scene.

However, this is a completely different situation, and as I said below in reply to Snow Leopard, this LAPD officer should be fired, charged, and stripped of all pension/benefits. The second officer should be similarly treated UNLESS he stood up and called this behavior out as unacceptable.

That being said, your eagerness to use one incident as evidence to justify your opinion on a separate incident 3000 miles away is absolutely wrong and is an indication of a more deeply rooted logical flaw in your judgment process.

But they then defend every story of police officers being overly violent with American civilians. These same people slam the TSA officers as being government thug perverts but then they defend police body slamming hand cuffed women. It is wrong for any government agency to trash the Constitutional rights of any American. You can’t be for small government that follows the Constitution and be for attacking American citizens because (In RANGERP own words) she probably voted for Obama and she needed an attitude adjust.

Hugh, please notice that I, and “other people at The Blaze that claim to be conservatives that love the Constitution,” are judging these incidents on a case-by-case basis based on the evidence presented and not on emotionally-charged prejudice. The apparent ease with which you and Rothbardian can lump us all together and make generalizations is echoed by your willingness to do the same thing to cops in general.

“Well, this cop is an abusive jerk, so obviously any other cop caught on video manhandling a belligerent perp must be an abusive jerk too, and anyone who disagrees with my sweeping generalization is obviously not a real Conservative that loves the Constitution.” I know you didn’t actually say it that way, but that is really what your attitude looks like through the eyes of a victim of your prejudice.

I cannot defend RangerP’s remarks in this thread, but I could in the earlier one. But if I had not spoken up here to correct you, your accusation would, in effect, condemn me by default simply because I saw the previous incident differently than your apparently prejudiced eyes.

Thanks for the comments and compliment. I think people that read what I post will know that I am a constitution loving conservative, Tea Party supporter, and that I want small and less intrusive gov.

Some of my smart alec comments on here stem from a article a few weeks back, where I believed the cops where justified in using force (many folks on here beat me up over my comments) against a drunk woman, who fell and hit her car when the cop turned her around.

I must admit, sometimes I just enjoy stirring up a hornets’ nest, and watching folks have a tizzy.

I will also add that I do not feel sorry for folks that intentionally try to geek up the cops and then get slammed. He told her to get back into her car. that is what he was trained to do. It is for her and his safety. Cops are in a position of authority, and I was raised to respect that authority. If you do not want to abide by the driving laws, then stop driving, and take a cap. If you get behind that wheel, do so knowing that you must abide by the traffic laws. If you break one of those laws, sit in your car, sign the ticket, thank the cop, and drive away when it is over. If you believe it was not justified, then you go to court and plead your case. I have gone to court, and got out of a ticket before. Getting out of your care, and flapping your jaws is not wise.

      Thanks again.

It’s an ugly situation, and she deserves a payday because the cop(s) was(were) way out of line. But she really shouldn’t be absolved of all responsibility. Right there in the street, when emotions are running high, you’re unarmed and the LEO is armed to the teeth and twice your size – that is not the time or place to show your ass, no matter how right you think you are. If you feel you are being treated unfairly, that’s what the lawyers and judges are for.

Too many Americans today think they are somehow entitled to respect they haven’t earned and should be shown patience when they offer none in return.

The Wooly one speaks my language. Punish the cops when they are out of line, but the tax payer out to be a bit miffed that this belligerent law breaker is about to get a hefty pay day because she could not obey the law, sit her fat butt in the car, and get her ticket. Now the hard working are about to reward the OWS, trophy generation, feminist, jack wagon.

      A. There are between 130 – 150 police suicides each year. These numbers are the result of two years of study. There is no reason to exaggerate them. They are high enough.
For more details, read the Police Suicide Study 2008 – 2009. Two to three times as many officers commit suicide than are killed by the guns of felons (emphasis–not “than die in the line of duty!”)

So you can be arrested for using a cell phone? She swore at a cop and gets roughed up,sounds about right for a police state. The cops need to be fired but don’t hold your breath on that one, even if they are fired the union will get their jobs back so they can get back to the serious crime fighting of giving a woman pavement burns for committing the crime of the century, using a cell phone while driving.

Talking on the cell phone certainly does not deserve this kind of battery.

These bastards need to go to jail.

So, where were they when the poor guy was hauled out of the truck during the Rodney King ‘festivities’? Funny, but I don’t recall any donut shops burning.

Yes it is interesting to note how we criminalize adolescents (smoking cigarettes, drinking a beer) but somehow $billions of drugs find there way across the boarder and onto our streets. Perhaps there is money being made and reinvested into a system that seeks to maintain the status quo and allusion of being tough on crime. If we spent half as much time and money on going after the real criminals rather than wasting time on cell phones, texting, high school parties and other “heinous” crimes perhaps we might actually make some headway. No surprise that law enforcement across the country have once again become the primary revenue generators. After all similar to increased fees for car registration, ridiculous school supply and athletic fees the revenue from popular, but irresponsible reductions in taxes must be made up.

Will never happen , we the people have let officers get out of hand. Like anything else once you start accepting it it becomes common pratice. A lot of good officers out there getting a bad rap account of this type of actions.

The one officer who slammed her the second time, in particular, should be fired, charged, and stripped of any and all pension/benefits that his public service career would have afforded him. This officer was actually the instigator of the first slam, as well, as the other officer appeared to actually be trying to keep her from falling.

Additionally, if the one officer who was not the main instigator in this case is not distancing himself from the guilty party and is calling this assault anything but an egregious abuse of power, then he too should be fired, charged, and stripped of benefits.

I get the whole loyalty and brotherhood thing, really, I get it. But if you can stand by and let your brother disgrace the badge and everything you are BOTH supposed to stand for, then you are as guilty as he is and should be treated accordingly. This kind of abuse should not be tolerated for the sake of some misguided sense of loyalty or honor.

Honor is as honor does, and I see nothing but dishonor and disgrace in this video.
