Posted on September 24, 2010 at 12:00pmHa, ha, this is so funny. It costs approximately $125,000 an hour to stage one of these hearings. As always, the American taxpayers foot the bill for democrats’ playtime.
Report Post »abc
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 12:32pmThat’s a fixed cost. They’d have paid that anyway. All the taxpayer footed for Colbert was the glass of water he was drinking and the 10 minutes of power running through his mic. Even you, Tri-ox, wouldn’t have noticed that hit had you paid for it.
Report Post »CoFX
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 1:08pmABC, when you start pulling talking points directly from Colbert’s program, you lose more than a little credibility. Colbert stated himself that it was 5 minutes of electricity for his microphone, not 10. Might try copy and pasting your arguement next time.
You also chastise the entire process in another post, yet when Tri mentions $125,000 per hour to hold these hearings, you dismiss that part as a fixed cost? Who exactly do you think foots the bill for Colbert speaking into the microphone for 30 minutes trying to make some quips he can use on his show? 30 minutes of jokes and rediculous unrelated comments just cost the American taxpayer $62,500. Oh, and his water, so that’s $62,502.
Report Post »orkydorky
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 3:30pmHey ABC, do you have an extra $125000.00, that maybe I could piss away and laugh while you watch?
Report Post »abc
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 4:15pmCOFX, I‘m not pulling talking points and that’s why I used a different number. Unlike mindless partisans, I actually watched the discussion and estimate that his speech pluc Q&A entailed 10 minutes of Colbert actually speaking. Perhaps it was a little longer, but that was my guess BASED UPON ACTUAL OBSERVATION AND INDEPENDENT THINKING. Do not accuse me of something and then cite facts that undermine your accusation.
More importantly, I have mocked no one by pointing out that the alleged $125K that was spend was not for the 10 minutes that Colbert spoke but for the entire allotted hearing or, more likely, reflected a pro-rata allocation for the overhead costs of Congress doing business in general. The majority of this is overhead (utilities, security, insurance, etc.), which is not variable and driven by whether or not Colbert spoke. Now, Fox and Friends falsely accused Colbert of free riding off the taxpayer, to which he responded by noting that the variable costs that WOULD be associate with his testimony (e.g., flights, meals, hotel) were being paid by Colbert personally. And while Gretchen Carlson is not a good enough journalist to retract her false accusation, and so therefore the vast majority of bloggers here would not be aware of the error, I would have hoped that common decency would dictate that once these facts were brought to light, along with a reasonable explanation of how the $125K is fixed for Congress and not especially incurred for Colbert, then the bogus argument about taxpayers having to pay for this jester would properly be laid to rest. I suppose I assume too much. Someone here has called for requisite IQ tests for members of Congress, but perhaps they should be required for voters (not to mention those blogging here); i cannot believe that people blogging here continue to repeat false statements and then, when corrected, they call those that would correct them nasty names and imply that such corrections are merely partisan taunts. Either refute the veracity of my economic facts or stop making a bogus argument about taxpayer funds going to waste on account of Colbert’s 10 minute speech and Q&A.

CoFX
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 12:59pmABC, I can’t speak for Paines, but personally, this isn’t an issue of party – all involved are a joke. Yes, that includes calling Elmo to testify. These committees are not intersted in hearing from actual experts to help form thier decisions. All they need to do is call up thier lobbyists and/or look up the chain of command in thier parties to make decisions for them. Public hearings like these serve no actual purpose. Decisions are not made via debate in DC

Report Post »abc
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 3:30pmI agree. And my posts reflect an affirmation of Colbert shining light on the failings of both parties and their inaction on forming a rational immigration policy that betters the economy and employment. I notice, however, that about 90% of the comments here are anti-Democrat, so perhaps you ought to direct your criticism to that large majority of partisans rather than my single comment attacking the GOP. You see, no one believes that you are non-partisan when you see the mote in my eye but miss the beams in your fellow Republicans… Also, Congressional hearings can serve a very important purpose: it’s called fact-finding. Although many Republicans believe that they already have all the facts and all the answers, making policy is much harder than forming political rhetoric–with the severe shortage of the former but huge supply of the latter on this site being a prime example. Just as Richard Feynmann putting a piece of the Space Shuttle O-Ring in iced water during testimony over the Challenger disaster quickly silenced Republican skeptics reflexively defending military contractors when they attempted to claim that those contractors were not at fault (they were), so Colbert is highlighting in an equally colorful way that Congressmen don’t read the bills that they pass (their lobbyists write them for them), refuse to compromise on issues (but instead stick to partisan rhetoric), and are ignoring the fact that the market has spoken (Americans are not taking the jobs, so the jobs are flowing to Mexico given the human capital bottleneck). These are important facts that a celebrity with star power has just informed millions of folks who yesterday didn’t know. You can choose to respond to facts. Or you can play rhetorical games. The latter simply proves that you are a partisan who puts party above country. If you choose to respond to the facts, you’ll demand that your Congressman (either outgoing or incoming) address the issue in a responsible, rational and timely way. The choice is yours. Prove that you are non-partisan and actually care about your country. Shouting partisan jingoist phrases doesn’t help anyone.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 12:01pmIt’s an absolute mockery of our system to have a village jester appear before an assembly, a court of what is supposed to be a group of serious individuals.
And when this group of serious individuals becomes part of the jester’s show, that they willingly play a role in establishing the jester’s credibility, his relevance to serious issues, they have reduced themselves and their court to the laughable confines of the jester’s world, as in “all the world is a stage.”
But this is a stage where fools sit and slobber over themselves and their relative intellects believing that at least they are not as foolhardy and ignorant as their jester that stands before them, entertaining them with smug mockery, an exaggerated belief in his own superior intellect and importance over his audience. It is a true circle of insanity, of egotistical insanity . . . otherwise known as, narcissism.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 12:27pmLike Lear’s Fool, Colbert serves a wonderful purpose here of highlighting Congressional inaction on the immigration and labor standards issue. Instead of addressing his factually supported contention that the free market has seen the transfer of agricultural production to Mexico–to the tune of hundreds of thousands of acres–because of labor shortages (as evidenced by the inability in spite of massive unemployment of attracting more than 16 people to do that work), Congress chose to avoid the issue. Yes, Colbert made some crude jokes, but he also attracted near-record crowds to watch the committee discussion. And viewers or commentators here, like the members of Congress, choose instead to shoot the messenger rather than address the facts at hand and the policy changes required. The only one not making useless noise WAS COLBERT!!

I witnessed the invasion of Texas from the open borders by the illegals. From 45 to 50 years of age I hit hard times and had to take any job I could take after Sept.11,2001. One of those was as a day laborer, ,wheelbarrowing concrete to repair driveways and new patios. We would go by the convenience store’s to pick up illegals as needed. We made the same amount per day. If we had big jobs the boss would take them home and say we would pick them up the next day. Many of times they did not show up. One day it had been rainy and cold. We went by the usual store and only a couple of illegals were there. They came up to the truck, boss told them $60 a day, same as me and they turned the work DOWN!!!! So I had to take the $60 a day to keep my roof over my head and the boss’s comment was “They have become MORE Americanized than we have and the thing is, today they probably will NOT get anymore offers of work.
