‘Shocked and Dismayed’: U.N. Group Cuts Funding of Palestinian Kids Mag After It Publishes Pro-Hitler Story

Imagine the outcry that would occur in the U.S. if a classic kids’ magazine such as Highlights or Ranger Rick were to publish a story praising Adolf Hitler. That’s exactly the theme a Palestinian children’s magazine found appropriate to publish earlier this year, but the editorial choice didn’t spark an outcry in the West Bank or Gaza.
According to the new book “Deception: Betraying the Peace Process” by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik who uncovered and translated the magazine article, the children’s magazine Zayzafuna published a fictional submission by a teenage girl who described Hitler’s actions as positive, because he killed Jews. The magazine is funded by the Palestinian Authority (the Authority gets U.S. taxpayer dollars).
Here’s how the book describes the controversy surrounding the monthly “educational” magazine:
Most of the content in Zayzafuna is positive and educational. It promotes family values, encourages children to read and to participate in building a modern, democratic society. However, these positive messages are directed at Palestinian society, Muslims, Christians and Druze. When it comes to portraying Israel and Jews, Zayzafuna changes its tone and includes items glorifying Jihad against Israel and praising Martyrdom death for Allah, and the Martyrs themselves.
The most extreme expression of demonization of Jews is the inclusion of an essay submitted by a teenage girl in which Hitler is presented as a positive figure to be admired because he killed Jews in order to benefit the world.
The 10th grader describes a dream in which she meets four historical figures who each offer her advice:
I turned to the next door; there Hitler awaited me. I said, ‘You’re the one who killed the Jews?’
He [Hitler] said: ‘Yes. I killed them so you would all know that they are a nation which spreads destruction all over the world. And what I ask of you is to be resilient and patient, concerning the suffering that Palestine is experiencing at their hands.’
I said [to Hitler]: ‘Thanks for the advice.’
The magazine editors did not post any disclaimer about the Hitler part of the girl’s essay, according to Palestinian Media Watch which published “Deception.”
The book’s authors Marcus and Zilberdik combed through Palestinian television, newspaper and magazine items looking for signs the Palestinian Authority is influencing public opinion toward peace with Israel but instead found a multitude of terror-glorifying messages including “streets, schools, sporting events and more [named] after Palestinian terrorists who have killed hundreds of Israeli civilians.”
They write:
“Palestinian children have participated in summer camps named after Dalal Mughrabi who led a bus hijacking in which 37 civilians were killed, and played in football tournaments named after Abd Al-Basset Odeh, a suicide bomber who killed 31 Israelis at a Passover dinner.”
Add to this the wider context of adult admiration for Hitler in the Arab world, children picking up on the trend isn’t all that surprising.
Since August (after the Hitler essay was published), the magazine has received funds from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which prompted the Jewish human rights group the Simon Wiesenthal Center to lodge a protest Wednesday with the UN organization:
The Simon Wiesenthal Center is calling on UNESCO to cut all funding for a Palestinian youth magazine for publishing material exalting Hitler […] .
Responding to the Wiesenthal Center’s protest, the office of the Director General of UNESCO wrote the [Wiesenthal] Center’s Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, and said in part, “Allow me to underscore that UNESCO takes this matter extremely seriously and it cannot but strongly deplore and condemn the statements… We will bring this matter to the attention of the concerned Palestinian authorities.”
UNESCO on Thursday decided to stop funding the magazine. In a letter to the Wiesenthal center, the office of UNESCO’s Director-General wrote:
“UNESCO is shocked and dismayed by the content of the February issue, and has requested more detailed information and clarification from the editors of the magazine and to Palestinian Authority. UNESCO strongly deplores and condemns the reproduction of such inflammatory statements in a magazine associated with UNESCO’s name and mission and will not provide any further support to the publication in question.”
In October, UNESCO voted to accept Palestine as a full member. As a result, the U.S. cut funding to UNESCO, previously providing 22% of the organization’s budget.

What if the child was black and all the schools were 98% white? Does that change the formula? Maybe one country did it because they believe Jews killed Jesus. Then another. One then expels them after they are falsely accused of killing a Christian boy. Then eventually one comes along and says “All those countries expelled them. Maybe we should too. They must have had good reasons.”
Smack, if you actually studied history instead of dates and numbers you wouldn’t have to ask why Jews were expelled. Why were the American Indians driven of their land? Answer, because they weren’t white, European settlers or their descendents nor were they Christian. Why were blacks discriminated against throughout much of US history? Because they were different. Why did America set lower quotas for immigrants from Ireland and Italy? Because they didn’t like Catholics.
Your entire argument is based on the false assumption that people always act fairly and rationally. News flash Smack. They Don’t. In fact, that’s probably the same assumption that leads you to think Palestinian actions are justified. “There must be a good reason why they hate them”. FALSE

Once again you prove yourself historically ignorant. You claim I buy into propaganda? It was the Romans who crucified people not the Jews. Moreover, at the time there were four competing and completely opposing sects of Judaism. Analyzing Matthew’s account reveals which sect was responsible for Jesus being arrested. The culprits were the Sadducees, a sect that died out decades later. Sadducees controlled the temple and didn’t like it when Jesus ransacked the vendors tables there, a source of profit for them. The High Priest, a Sadducee, oversaw his trial. The Essenes were hermits who could care less what he did, the Pharisees, from whom modern Judaism is descended, didn’t believe in crucifixion as a form of execution, and the Zealots hated Rome and would never have turned anyone over to them.
As for the persecution of Christians, remember that all Christians prior to Paul were actually Jews. They were seen not as a separate religion but as a blasphemous sect that was a threat, not unlike the Christian Protestant movement centuries later. This along with the Gospels was used as justification for 2000 years of persecution.

Posted on December 23, 2011 at 11:38amTzion, when the same result occurs time after time, in place after place, in varying cultures after cultures, you can rationalize all that you you want… but, commonsense points to the reason.
Ask yourself why no other European nation wanted to accept the Jews that wanted to leave Germany during mid-20th century. Even nations that were vehement enemies, and could not agree on anything, agreed on this one issue. Why?
History has shown this to be the same generation after generation. http://www.eretzyisroel.org/~jkatz/expulsions.html
Why? It can not be everybody else. Everyone else can not be wrong and just the Jews correct. It must be their culture and behavior. This has been consistent throughout history.

Posted on December 23, 2011 at 2:21pmTZION is right. Only the Romans had authority to exercise capital punishment in Judea and did it with brutal efficiency. This is why Ciaphas sent Christ to Pilate and demanded he be executed for sedition against Rome. In both Jewish revolts of AD70 and AD132 many thousands of jews were crucifed by the Romans. According to Jewish law, only G-d can forgive sin. So when Christ was forgiving sinners of their sins he was directly affronting jewish law. His increased popularity was a threat to Ciaphas and the sanhedrin. Jesus became not only a heretic to them (because they didn’t believe in his divinity as the son of God) but a political threat. Be that as it may, Joseph of Arimethea was a member of the Sanhedrin and a believer in Christ. When Christ began preaching of kingdoms and attacked the tax collectors and merchants Ciaphas found the means to bring Christ before Pilate because Christ at that point was compromising Roman rule also. So SMACKDOWN…it’s very shaky to say “the jews” killed Christ. Jewish factions arrested and brought him before the Romans, but only Rome and it’s governor had the authority to actually execute anyone. Look it up if you don’t believe me. Let’s also remember the christian crusaders in 1099 brought every jew in Jerusalem (man woman and child) into the chief synagogue and burned them alive while singing “Christ, we adore thee”to the screams of the people burning inside. Islam has treated them no better.

Posted on December 23, 2011 at 2:28pmSMACKDOWN…you need to look up Pontius Pilate’s record as governor of Judea and his standing in Rome. He was a very harsh governor and Rome was on his back constantly for not settling the rebel jewish factions down in the region. Pilate tried sending Christ to Herod for disposition because Herod (a Romanized Jewish ruler) was seen as a jew and any capital crime judgement against Christ would have been squarely on a Jewish official deeming it so. Christ would then be sent back to the Romans for execution. Herod however passed up on judging Christ and sent him back to Pilate for judgement. Remember at this point Christ is on trial for sedition against Rome. Seeing Christ‘s rising movement Pilate made a political decision to crucify just one more Jewish troublemaker he didn’t need reaching the ears of Rome.

I personally find the biblical description of Pilate very unusual. For Jews he’s often seen as the second cruelest Roman ruler to ever be placed over them. Yet the Bible makes him seem merciful. I heard a theory once based on Josephus’ accounting that explained that Barabbas was one of the Zealots, a group that violently opposed Roman rule. The Christians live primarily in areas like Bethlehem and Jerusalem and other enclaves and rarely resort to terror. Ever notice that most of the terrorist groups in Israel have Islamic names (Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad)? How about how Lebanon, the other country with a significant Christian population, has been the least aggressive of all Israel’s neighbors? The fact is most of the terrorists are Muslim as only Muslims have this particular concept of martyrdom.
Under Israeli rule, Muslims, Christians, and Jews all have access to their holy sites, are allowed to practice their religion as they see fit, and are granted equal justice under the law. Israel is tolerant of all groups INCLUDING the ones that time and again have tried to wipe them out. You speak of what happened in Ukraine. Similar atrocities happened in Poland, where I think between 1.5-3 million Poles were murdered. Many countries have war museums, but how many times has America actively and meticulously attempted to completely exterminate part of their population. If we followed your idea of “It didn‘t happen here so we shouldn’t have to remember it” we would be inviting history to repeat itself.

Posted on December 23, 2011 at 10:41amTzion, you used a whole lot of words to say nothing. Pol pot killed a higher percentage of his people than Hitler. Why aren’t the words, ‘The Holocaust’ specific to Cambodians? Like wise, Ukrainians? When one says the words, ‘The Holocaust,’ it is accepted as being specifically the Jewish holocaust. Why?
I say it’s media manipulation. Just look at this website. We are fed a daily meal of ‘poor me I’m Jewish, or Israeli’ diet. Why? Jews are 1.7% of our population. Israel is a two bit nation the size of New Jersey. It’s publicity vastly out weighs its significance. Why?

Report Post »If Jews are so minute, so insignificant, so unimportant, then why have they suffered two thousand years of nearly constant persecution? The answer to your question is because throughout history, whenever you have a minority in a country whose ways are different than the majority’s, that minority has first been mocked, then criticized, then demonized, and finally persecuted. Why? Because it always easier to find fault with others than with yourself. If you truly stood for the end to persecution, genocide, and discrimination, you would ask that all instances of hate speech be taken note of and dealt with. As is, you have repeatedly made it clear you don’t think clear signs of hate directed at Jews is worth even reporting on. You always talk about the evils of the past yet want us to ignore those happening right in front of us.

Posted on December 24, 2011 at 12:30pmI do not think the Holocaust is a myth. But if, like many Arabs, you do think it’s a myth, then it’s illogical to congratulate Hitler for having perpetrated it, as this book appears to do! You can’t have it both ways.

The unions were always meant to be used as the “shock troops” as “in the bullies”. But the behind the scene the never changing (not elected) bureaucrats are the the most dangerous . But as Soros said “the train has left the station”. I am sorry to say this time period (if ever recorded ) will be known as the fall of what we called the Western Civilization.

By fighting off the Jews, I am doing the Lord’s work.” He made essentially the same claim in a speech before the Reichstag in 1938.
Hitler considered himself a Catholic until the day he died. In 1941 he told Gerhard Engel, one of his generals: “I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so.” In fact, Hitler was never excommunicated from the Catholic Church, and Mein Kampf was not placed on the Church’s Index of Forbidden Books.

This is what it will do:
(a) Repeal- The United Nations Participation Act of 1945 is repealed.
(b) Termination of Participation in United Nations- The President shall terminate all participation by the United States in the United Nations, and any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations.
(c) Closure of United States Mission to United Nations- The United States Mission to the United Nations is closed. Any remaining functions of such office shall not be carried out.
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:H.R.1146.IH:
To sum up – it will withdraw the US from the UN and kick the UN out of the US
What we need are people calling their reps and asking them to move it OUT of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and onto the floor for a vote saying to their rep that if they don’t vote YEA they will not be re-elected.
If Ron Paul is NOT elected President where he has a better chance of getting this done because he’ll have the weight of the Presidency behind him – this bill will DIE FOREVER and we will be FOREVER involved with the UN. Paul has tried for 14 years to awaken people to the evils of the UN and it’s about time Congress LISTENED and did something about it.

Posted on December 23, 2011 at 7:41amThe UN is so damn clueless when it comes to how Muslims view the rest of the world. They are so preoccupied with being “politically correct” and “tolerant” that they simply refuse to see what is blatantly obvious to most of the Western world. Muslims are the most hateful, intolerant, backwards, racist, anti-sematic people in the world and they should be dealt with accordingly. Yes, sure, there are “peaceful” Muslims, but the fact that they don’t do more to oppose the Muslims who are not, they are condoning their actions.
The world needs to wake up. This is not political to the Muslims. This is religious and ingrained in their beliefs. Hitler conspired with the Muslims in his bid to rid the world of Jews and others. History can and will repeat itself if we do not learn from it.

The disciples followed the teachings of Prophet Jesus (pbuh). They worshiped Allah alone and kept religion pure for Him. They believed and supported Prophet Jesus (pbuh) to such an extent that Allah held them up as an excellent example to Muslims in the Qur’an:
O you who believe! Be you helpers (in the cause) of Allah as said Jesus – son of Mary, to the disciples: “Who will be my helpers in Allah’s cause?” The disciples said: “We are the helpers of Allah (i.e. we will strive in His cause)!
