A Brooklyn firefighter who had been searching an apartment for potentially trapped occupants was engulfed in flames when the entire third floor erupted Monday morning. He was pulled to safety by a fellow firefighter to the awe of stunned witnesses below, but is now suffering severe burns and is in critical condition.
According to a department official, the firefighter, from Rescue 2 in Crown Heights, was taken to Cornell University Medical Center in Manhattan with burns over 42 percent of his body.
“It was crazy. It was ablaze. The firefighter was about to jump he was screaming like crazy,” said Victor Vargas, who works at a nearby deli. “We smelled the smoke and ran over.”
Vargas added, “the firefighter on ladder started beating the fire [on him] with his hands.”
The New York Post adds:
Video taken by a witness shows a firefighter slowly – but methodically — pulling a firefighter covered with flames out from the window onto a almost horizontal truck ladder some three stories in the air.
Red and orange flames can be seen shooting from the buildings as debris rained down below. [...]
“One firefighter appeared at the window with heavy fire and he escaped down the ladder. He was the most seriously injured,” said Edward Baggott, an FDNY deputy assistant chief. [...]
Investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious and the home was not occupied at the time.
The home is owned by city school teacher and her family.
“They are coping the best they can,” said June’s brother Leon Brewster. “I don’t know they can stay.”
According to the Post, annother firefighter was also taken to Cornell in serious condition while two others sustained minor injuries.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 8:42pmPrayers for this man, his friends and family and all who bravely serve in this way! In response to many of the comments, there are many firefighters who do this as volunteers, for no pay, as well. The training is the same, but they do this in their off time from other jobs, taking turns to make sure small towns have some sort of fire department. Kudos to them, as well as those who do it for pay. It is no different, the risk is the same. God bless you all! May God have mercy on this firefighter, to bless him with a full recovery and return him to his family!

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 5:13pmI am not sure if the public realizes how often this does happen. I can only speak for my own experience working in a City department, This is an issue because it was recorded, fireman are not going to call the news and cry, this is their job they know it going in. The civilians to complain about the money are the guys that dont have the brass b@lls to even be near the danger that fireman found himself in, its ok God cant make everyone brave. This country will always need men to watch Dancin with the Stars. Effin @u$$ies

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 4:22pmThe public will never know the sacrifices these men ,women make and close their minds to care. Whether we are paid well or not we go to work knowing that death may happen, but a serious injury will definitely happen. Try going to work with that over your head for 25 years.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 3:58pmTo all the readers that know so much about this job. The taxpayer Only pays 500 dollars a year for full time fire and police, ems anything more that you pay is for you to ask your mayor.FAcT firemen and cops put in for their pension just like a 401k over all the years they work.I contribute over 1000 dollars a month but the public wouldn’t know that. More is spent in this country from illegal immigration than for the guys like that jumping out of that window on fire .Visit a burn center look at the children then say fireman are paid too much then go #uck yourselves.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 10:36amSorry- But he should have dropped and rolled. It’s only 12 feet or so and he has plenty of padding and a helmet. It looks like shrubs below him. Where are the hoses anyway? This looks like a whole lot of incompetence with all due respect. just sayin’
Report Post »Shiggity
Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:21pmwith all do repsect…youre an idiot. that “padding” isnt thick at all. its made of a somewhat fire resistance material, not cushioning material. three stories is more than 12 feet. and lets just say he did “drop and role” out….his SCBA (air tank) could very easily break his back. you try falling “12 feet” and landing on a pipe….hope he’s got enough padding. and if you noticed near the end….water was being put on the fire. you have to be careful using water in a situation like that. just so you know, when a drop of water is converted to steam, it expands 1700 times. if they had used the water while the FF was still in the window, they could have quite possibly killed him with steam burns. fire gear isnt as protective against steam as it is against actual fire. i could keep going on about this but hopefully youll think twice about making an uneducated assumption about the fire service. Most departments require that you have a college degree…..i bet most FF’s have more education than you.
p.s. I’m a firefighter.

Youre definetly that guy who walked in on his wife getting it by a fireman, failed the physical to get on, or a cop. either way, youre jealous. I meet people like you every day.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 7:56amThis Fire Fighter was caught in what is called a Flash Over. This occurs when every item in a room reaches it’s ignition point from absorbed heat and ignites at the same time. It appears he was attempting to make it to the window prior to this taking place, but didn’t make it. All of our prayers go out to him for a complete recovery and to his family in dealing with this hardship.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 7:29amFirefighter unions are, along with police unions, the most abusive in ripping off the tax payer. I have a friend who is a retired NYC lieutenant. His pension is over 80,000 and he has Cadillac healthcare. He never fired his gun while on the job. He retired at the age of 49…33 years ago.
It’s not easy being critical of heroes like this fireman, but you can bet that the union will exploit it in order to justify pensions and benefits which we simply cannot sustain — they always do, and they don’t give a damn about how adversely it impacts towns, cities and the taxpayers who live in them.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 7:43amYou are lumping us all together. I‘m in a right to work state and our pension is funded by the employees and it’s local, not state and is in great shape. Liberal governments made big mistakes and unions should be ashamed.

Report Post »Really, you are going to take a story where a firefighter was badly injured going into a house looking for survivors?
You idiot, even if Unions are your boogyman, you picked the basic need of unions to make your stand. It is the Unions that fight for the surviving fireman, you see; the state without a union would fire the now disabled fireman and send him home to collect alluminum cans for a living.
I am not fan of Unions myself, but pick your fights man.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 9:44amNo, no one thinks that the Blaze has this stuff first. That is because they don’t; you will notice usually notice a byline where credit is given to the news outlet initiating the story. The Blaze does not have reporters roaming around looking for stories, they simply pick the ones that the Huffington Post would pick and present them to us.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 5:00amFiremen and Law Enforcement personnel face this kind of danger every day and pro athletes are paid how much for playing games???? This guy is probably headed for financial hardship the rest of his life because of his injuries.
So think about this brave fellow and those like him protecting your family and your worthless crap the next time you want to pitch a bitch about public employees “exorbitant” pensions and throw them into the same pot as politicians and other bureaucrats.
Oh yeah, I have seen a lot of this kind of bravery and not once was a “professional athlete” involved, or anywhere near the scene…….unless of course he was being arrested for dope, beating up someone with his buddies, or DUII.
The amazing thing is you will never hear these guys complain, so I will, and if you don’t like it live with it.
There, I feel much better now

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 6:29amThey also steal our tax dollars by claiming that they‘re doing work when really they’re sitting there “patrolling” a strip club or “patrolling” an empty cemetary (after patrolling a strip club). Robbing the taxpayer for work hours/overtime pay. Double-dipping on hours/overtime.
Firefighters, same thing, they ride through the neighborhood with their sirens blaring as if they’re rushing to a fire, but in reality they‘re just creating the illusion that they’re doing work so they can rob the taxpayers for more work hours/overtime pay.
http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/cleveland_threatens_to_discipl.html
And this is (conveniently) a few weeks after Issue 2 was defeated in my Ohio by UNIONS! (POLICE/FIRE/TEACHERS)….I’m SURE they knew NOTHING about the overtime ripoff prior to that vote… and the media knew NOTHING!!!! YEA, RIGHT!!!!!!!
Corruption runs rampant in this country. And bootlickers who hero-worship their public servants are the enablers.
