The video is shocking. During a Critical Mass bike ride in Brazil on Friday, a car plowed through the pack, sending cyclists shooting into the air and flying over the hood:
Another version of video shows a clearer picture of the incident (staring at 1:10):
Gawker reports the driver of the car was trying to get away from cyclists at the back of the pack who were threatening him and his 15-year-old son:
The highly disturbing video shows several riders piling up on the hood of the car before being thrown to the pavement. Richard Neis has been identified locally as the driver of the car and according to his lawyer, Neis was being threatened by cyclists at the back of the group. Also in the car was his 15-year-old son, who told a local newspaper that riders had been banging on the sides of the car and his father had sped up to get away from them.
Eight people were taken to the hospital out of the ten reported injuries.

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 3:23pmMy humanity is just fine, where is your common sense? ;-)
When you do silly things like protesting (for whatever cause – including tea party rallies) you are putting your life on the line. When you start getting into people’s faces, body slamming them, cursing them, beating on cars, trampling people’s lawns or scaring little kids by your mob…Then you are taking a big chance with your own life. For instance: That union thug in Ga? His picture is now well known, it has been seen by millions. I would hate to be him when he gets called on his actions. You act like an idiot you might just get hurt…or killed. You bust into my house you will be shot…dead. I do not care if you are drunk or a liberal or just plain mistaken. You threaten my security I will take you out. Liberals seem to have a hard time with this concept, that is why the tea party crowds are mostly peaceful while these union thugs are in everyone’s faces. This is why there was respect in the wild west. When everyone wears a gun you watch what you say and do to others. Libs think they have the law to hide behind, but I have news for them. Right will triumph and their crooked law will not save them. It is just a matter of how far people will be pushed. I do not deny anyone the right to stand up for what they believe…But you better not try to deny me the same right.
It is too bad those people got hit. I wonder what they were doing that put them in harm’s way?

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 2:04pmThat sounds like a pretty flimsy reason to plow through all those people. How would running over and possibly killing a crowd of people be a reasonable solution to a verbal threat from a cyclist? You are in a car with lockable doors and the guys are on bikes. Why not take an alternate route? I hope we get a follow up on this story. Something isn’t right (besides the obvious).

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 1:51pmDon’t fall for it. Critical mass events are well known for being violent. What this guy claims was happening. That people were beating on his car, threatening him, and behaving in a manner that made him fear for his life are common at critical mass events. These people aren’t nice innocent little cyclists, they are domestic terrorists.

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 2:25pmOut of curiosity I looked up critical mass. Wikipedia reports this tidbit:
“Critical Mass rides have generated controversy and public opposition.[38] Some critics claim that Critical Mass is a deliberate attempt to obstruct traffic and disrupt normal city functions, asserting that individuals taking part refuse to obey traffic laws.[39] Altercations with police and motorists have occurred. Although uncommon, protesters are sometimes present at Critical Mass events to oppose the group’s methods.
Some bicycling advocacy groups have expressed concern that the “subversive” nature of Critical Mass and altercations with motorists could weaken public support for bicyclists.[13] Though it does not condone incidents of violence and rudeness, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition credits Critical Mass with spotlighting bicycle issues and aiding their efforts in advocating for cyclists.”
Being in a small town in Florida I have never heard of this group, but it sure looks like there is much more behind this story than what is reported. I will withhold judgment on the driver of the car, on the surface it appears he is guilty of obscene recklessness, but there is no telling what really went on. I can say one thing though, if some bicyclists were beating on my car I would not be recklessly trying to get away from then…It is those bikers I would have run over…

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 2:31pmI‘m an American who has lived in Brazil for the past 37 years and incedents like this one aren’t that rare,. What’s rare is justice and thethe punishment of the perpetrators. If they are wealthy enough they hire lawyers that know how to tie up their cases in the courts for years and years. Justice in Brazil runs slowly like sorghum molasses and sometimes even gets clogged up in the bottle.
