Shocking Vid: Greek Rioters Firebomb Police; Beat Former Finance Minister Bloody

Greek Labor unions are once again rioting in the streets against austerity measures. Those riots have quickly turned violent. The video below shows one rioter firebombing a police officer, who is then engulfed in flames as people cheer, and an angry mob attacking the former finance minister until blood runs down his face:

Russia Today, which posted the video, describes the violence:

Hundreds of protesters clashed with riot police across central Athens on Wednesday, smashing cars and hurling gasoline bombs during a nationwide labour protest against the government’s latest austerity measures. The former Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis was attacked by protesters outside a luxury hotel. He was escorted, bleeding from the scene as his attackers yelled “thieves” at him.

The Associated Press’s report on the riots below:

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Protesters clashed with riot police across Athens on Wednesday, torching cars, hurling gasoline bombs and sending Christmas shoppers fleeing in panic during a general strike against the government’s latest austerity measures.

Police fired tear gas and flash grenades as the violence escalated outside parliament and spread to other parts of the capital.

Angry unions triggered the 24-hour strike to protest new labor reforms and pay cuts as Greece struggles to reshape its economy under conditions set by a euro110 billion ($146 billion) international bailout. The strike also grounded flights, closed factories, disrupted hospitals and shut down trains, ferries and buses across the country.

It was the seventh strike this year by unions appalled at a wave of austerity policies meant to pull Greece out of its worst financial crisis since World War II.

In Athens, youths wearing black masks and ski goggles used sledgehammers to smash paving stones and hurled the rubble at police. A post office near parliament briefly caught fire, forcing employees and bystanders to run for safety.

Christmas shoppers fled as rioters hurled petrol bombs wrapped in bundles of firecrackers, causing small explosions when they landed. Rioting youths torched several cars, overturned trash bins and vandalized storefronts, tossing Christmas decorations into the street.

At least 10 people were detained Wednesday and five were hurt, including a conservative politician who was beaten in the street by protesters. Two people were injured in Athens and three in Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki, where another anti-austerity protest turned violent.

Wednesday’s violence erupted after 20,000 protesters marched to parliament in Athens chanting “No sacrifice for the rich!”

Crippled by high budget deficits and a mountain of debt, Greece was saved from bankruptcy in May by an international rescue loan package. In return, the Socialist government slashed pensions and salaries, hiked taxes, raised retirement ages and eased restrictions on private sector layoffs.

Late Tuesday, the government won a key vote in parliament on new labor reforms that include deeper pay cuts, salary caps and involuntary staff transfers at state companies. The new law also reduces unions’ collective bargaining power in the private sector, allowing employers to substantially cut salaries.

Unions said Wednesday’s strike aimed to pressure the Socialists into slowing down the spending cuts they said were hurting average Greeks.

“There is huge participation in this strike … I believe it will put pressure on the government,” Stathis Anestis, deputy leader of Greece’s largest union, the GSEE, told The Associated Press. “We want the government to take back the latest labor law that will hurt workers’ rights.”

Journalists are also holding a 24-hour strike, causing blackouts for TV, radio and internet news, and newspapers will not be published on Thursday.

“Everything is horrible. Right now I am so mad,” said Katiana Vrosidou, a cleaning lady waiting in vain for a bus in downtown Athens to go to work.

All opposition parties opposed the reforms Tuesday, which left-wing parties claim will take labor relations “back to the Middle Ages.”

But Prime Minister George Papandreou’s Socialists insisted they needed to turn around loss-making public corporations while saving private sector jobs by allowing struggling businesses to cut costs.

Public transport workers held a 24-hour strike Tuesday, causing traffic jams across Athens as commuters carpooled and used taxis to get to work. Further transport strikes are planned for Thursday and Friday.

Theodora Tongas, Costas Kantouris and Thanassis Stavrakis contributed to this report.

Tear gas and flash grenades won’t combat Molotov Cocktails. The instant a rioter lights a bomb, a sharpshooter should pop him in the head. The sight of a crumpling dead body suddenly engulfed in flames will give the rest of the malcontents something to think about.

Just need a govt with balls, to take them down. When it happens here, watch and see what Barry does…will be very interesting. If this violence is really about workers’ envy of the rich, they should realize the unions are the greatest barrier for those who are willing and able to achieve. However, I think it is violence just for violence. Foolish immature people have been influenced by those who want to seize power for themselves.

Respectfully, you are incorrect. Protests do happen in the countries you mentioned. Most recently, Iran. I lived in Kuwait for two years and they had similar riots from the workforce which was something like 80+% expatriates. Just because we are not hearing about them does not mean they are not happening. These governments have more power to shut down media outlets so the rest of the world remains in the dark. But, recall how the Iranian people rioted over the results of their last election and though media was shut down citizens utilized social internet sites like twitter and facebook to get the news and images out.

      BOUGHT YOUR SILO YET?,

Countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia and Cuba will crack down and eviscerate any dissention by its citizens.

About a year ago, a Cuban citizen was seen on video publicly criticizing the Cuban economy. This man has since disappeared and no one knows about his where about.

If someone came out publicly in Iran suggesting that the lilliputian, Ahmadinejad be removed from power or that the ruling mullahs be replaced, this person would be put on endangered species list.

These countries don’t allow incongruous opinions or acts and that is a fact which cannot be denied.

Again, you are not completely accurate. While I agree that in countries under a totalitarian regime citizens have an excellent chance of “going missing” if they speak out against their government, it is not accurate to say that the people do not rise up and riots never happen. Your first example of the citizen in Cuba- that was one person. One person does not constitute a riot. In Iran you had several people demonstrating in the streets after the reelection of Ah-mad-in-jihad. Recall the signs that the citizens carried were in English, not Arabic. This was a total slap in the face of Iranian leaders for its own people to reach out to the West in this way. Obviously, the people took the mentality “our lives be damned.” the world must know we disagree with our leaders. I agree, in countries such as this, citizens protest at great peril. But, the risks are not always a determent from speaking out.

      BOUGHT YOUR SILO YET?,

I believe the official language of Iran is Persian and not Arabic but I get your point.

The protests that we saw in Iran were for the most part peaceful, non-violent. We also saw that the Iranian government was able to quickly quench and crush the opposition. You’ll notice that we have not seen any more protests of any kind in Iran.

On the other hand, the protests taking place in Greece is almost always violent. The Greek government seems to be impotent in its ability to put a stop to these types of protests. That’s the difference.

Thanks for pointing that out, the language is indeed Persian, otherwise known as Farsi. It looks a lot like Arabic though. I agree with you to a point, but even the Iranian riots got violent. If I recall there were a couple of deaths. We have not heard about any deaths being reported so far in Italy. But you are correct, once the level of violence reaches the point that civilians are killed, that’s usually enough to curb it. I think, also, it depends on what the fight is for. At least in my mind, taking to the streets (in a violent manner) for taxation or corrupt elections is not enough to bring a revolution. However, if the government had gotten so out of control to the point that there were massive food shortages, well, that’s a whole other animal. I would be in the streets too if I was unprepared and my family was starving. But, that won’t be me. I don’t care what people say or think about me because I am preparing. I have no desire to rely on the government. By that same token, I have no intention of turning people away either, if they are unprepared and need help, I will do my best to do so.

Not to excuse the rioters in any way, but nations that embrace socialism with all its “free” handouts to citizens will have to brace for such angry mobs when they finally run out of money and have to cut out the freebies.

most of these rioters are young kids who dont really understand the world, as soon as a couple got shot they would simmer down, they have the stomach for small time hooliganism but not the stomach for war.

I was going to say the same thing. And not to condone, in any way, what that Fl. man did yesterday at the school board, but I would say it has already started. If at just a small level. He said, you fired my wife, we are broke, and our benefits are gone.

Socialism does not work, has never worked, and won’t work here. I do not know how far into the future this scenario is for us but if we embrace socialism it will be in our future that is for sure. The government will “try” and make everyone a dependent of the state. Once you are dependent, you will have no way to help yourself- violence will seem the only recourse. Once we see this level of fear the government will have the right to enact martial law, at which point they can disarm the public, confiscate food supplies, and even suspend impending elections. This will only exacerbate the situation and increase the number of those willing to fight in the streets.

If the cops start shooting, all hell breaks loose and there is civil war! The cops are actually doing an excellent job, but some water cannons would have been very helpful, and why do I not even see any guns??

I do agree war is coming. First in Europe and then most likely here as well, unless things change very soon. Look, I’m as anti-Authoritarian as they come when the authoritarianism is unjust.

In the case of firebombing a cop for trying to stop anarchy and rioting in the streets?

Sorry. I don’t “progress” that far. The Greek police need to put the hammer down. This has gotten to be too much.

This direction seems to be set hard into the West’s rudder. That’s intentional. Greece, England, Italy, France. We’re on the schedule too, probably the last though.

Maybe it‘s time we started considering opting out and quietly forming a Galt’s Gulch in some remote unconnected place, folks. Let the leech class wither from lack of victims.

Police should have flame-throwers and give them a dose of their own medicine….Commies love martyrs, lets give them some.. This is only the beginning…Look what’s happening on our own border, they just killed a cop…and Barrys gang says we can‘t even ask someone for their ID’s. It’s coming here, another brainwashed progressive generation, for social rights who don’t give a damn about their free rides on the system.. And guess who’s at the top of our govt, the ‘hip-dips‘ of the 60’s who where suits and ties now. The same group that shanghaied our School System, and brainwashes these idiots….

Agree totally. That’s all these folks understand. They obviously don’t understand, “we’re out of money!”
Decades ago, unions were useful in protecting workers from being abused. Now unions have become the abusers. They have become extortionists and thugs.

My thoughts exactly. I scrolled down to the comment section to say that it’s almost comical watching armed policemen cowering in a circle, while anarchists try to kill them. Then I saw your comment. In the non-politically correct world, the police would be kicking ass and taking names.

I agree TXPILOT. We vote and rally and these lying two faced SOBs always end up turning their back on us and implementing more spending, regulation and control. I do not believe our problems will be solved through the usual process (Congress). It is too late. War will come and it will be up to us, the people who are prepared, to take the country back by force and set it right again if that can even be done now. Thomas Jefferson was not joking when he said there should be a revolution every fifty years. We have let it get out of hand and these monsters will not give up power. We must take it back. So, yes, it is time to lock and load and get ready. The lefties will start the violence but we will finish it.

Do I trust the media’s reporting? What if a majority of the demonstrators were just Greek taxpayers were were livid at the EU’s bailout of fat cats for which the taxpayers would be stuck with the bill? I‘m not saying it’s so, but if it was, would we hear about it? I figure chances are good that if the media are reporting it as they are, they may be trying to get me to react in a certain way. I hate being used.

Allow me to introduce my self. I am a simple Greek woman. And i really want to answer to all those that se parts of reality and keep on bad mouthing us. Before people do so, PLEASE, ask the people, is this true what you just saw or heard? Then, get answers FROM THE PEOPLE and not the ones that get the big money and express opinions, wich will be accepted a respected. We, the people, are sad for the policemen, but what you do not know as it seems, is that even they are on strike. They are not allowed to have what they are supposed to have. Their salaries are not good even to buy half of what they need to make it through the month. And we are all like this, here in Greece. As far for the minister, i dare you to find ONE simple person that didn’t said ” what? just him???” . As they never touched their payments or extras, yet, they asked us to live with 540 euros per month and be happy, the moment that the lowest payment was 680 euros and not even close to cover a family’s needs.
Thank you for your time. And, please, when it comes to what happens to a country, ask those who live or try to live there and not accept what the media feed everyone. Have a wonderful day.

The cops may be able to get of a couple dozen rounds but how does that stop 10,000 attackers? Also the next time the protesters will bring guns. The austerity measures were enacted to back loans that cover the bond holders of Greek debt. The citizens of Greece are being asked to sacrifice their living standards to keep the bond holders from taking losses. When you purchase bonds there used to be a chance that you would take a loss. Not so these days. If the bonds make money you keep it. If they lose money the government takes the loss and keeps you whole passing the bill to it’s tax payers and in the case of Greece, Italy and Ireland, raising taxes and cutting benefits. With Greece and the other PIIGS think TARP times 100. You don‘t believe we’d be in the streets here if our goivernment did that to us?
