Shocking Vid: Man Beats Cameraman With a Stick Over Animal Cruelty Story

When a news crew from WGHP in North Carolina was sent to investigate reports of animal cruelty, they probably never imagined to catch pictures of themselves being beaten. But that’s exactly what happened.
The news crew originally went to catch footage of horses that were reportedly being neglected. The cameraman, identified as Chris Weaver, set up his camera on the side of the road and started recording. That’s when Kirkus — the horses’ owner — spotted him, and came running after Weaver with a large stick. The video shows Kirkus swinging at Weaver multiple times, Weaver pleading with Kirkus not to hit him, and then picks up the loud thump of when Kirkus ignores those pleas and connects:
According to WGHP, Kirkus was arrested and charged with two felonies — including assault with a deadly weapon — and the crew escaped without any serious injuries. Although the sheriff’s office admitted it has received calls about the horses welfare in the past, it said their treatment does not amount to abuse.
WGHP also cut a shorter version of the attack for their website:

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 6:09pmActually, I think the camera guy was lucky to be assaulted with a stick. In this part of the country, it’s not uncommon for people to shoot first and run their mouth later (not that I condone either, in this case).

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 6:04pmYou can see when the trespasser reaches for his tripod that it is set past the drainage ditch touching the wire fense. He is in the mans front yard. Why wasn’t the camera man charged with trespassing? The yard looks neglected but the horses are clearly well fed. I appreciate a don’t tred on me attitude. The media and the government deserve to be read the riot act for they way they intrude on people’s lives. Why isn’t this camera man investigating the trillions of dollars being wasted by our government? Do some genuine worthwile public service instead of harassing poor red necks .

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 7:10pmLooks like they were doing a local story about reports of animal neglect. Was hard for me to tell “clearly” that the horses were well fed but there are other aspects to animal abuse/neglect. Since he apparently had been reported twice before, he knew darn well why the reporters were there.

Also, if the camera man fought back, it would be in the Times tomorrow – front page, above the fold, inch high headlines. Right now, that fool has assault with a weapon and possibly property damage to deal with. Also be interesting to find out if the fool assaulted him on someone else’s property. I hope the camera man sues for damages and wins big.

A paid tool of what? He was sent there by his employer to get some footage of something or other to do with the horses. It’s called a job assignment in our part of the world. We had a special film showing Wednesday night where I work and a news crew showed up. I was briefly handed a camera to hold while the camera man set up the tripod. It’s really heavy. Our news crew shot some footage and then took off for another event. It lasted about five minutes. These guys don’t have time to waste.
Mr. Kirkus came out swinging and followed the camera man across the road. He verbally warned Mr. Kirkus not to hit him, but Mr. Kirkus hit him anyway. I’m sorry if Mr. Kirkus felt threatened, but that does not give him the right to strike a camera man with a stick. It doesn’t give him the right to follow the camera man across the road to his van and strike him again. The camera man was not there for a confrontation. Mr. Kirkus made it into a confrontation and kicked it up a level into an assault. His choice. Actions have consequences. Mr. Kirkus made his choices, now he gets to live with the results.

You know what? That guy is paid “TOOL” to film news stories, he’s not paid to “INFRINGE ON OTHER PEOPLE’S RIGHTS” or go mano mano with angry people. He’s also probably hauling around close to 20 thousand dollar of video equipment “IRRELEVANT”.
Also, if the camera man fought back, it would be in the Times tomorrow – front page, above the fold, inch high headlines “CHECK THE BLAZE”. Right now, that fool has assault with a weapon and possibly property damage to deal with “WILL BE REDUCED TO MISDEMEANER AND RESTITUTION BY THE COURTS” . Posted on January 7, 2011 at 5:41pmThe crew was clearly in the “barrow” ditch, or “bar” ditch as we say it in Texas. This is most likely party of the state, county, or city road right of way so, no, the camera was not set up on this guys property, but outside of his property limits. Talk about a maroon! I agree with the poster who said that people like this who have such a violent temper who would treat a human like this would most likely treat his animals the same way, if not worse.

Trespassing is a crime. Therefore if I were to find someone committing a criminal act on my property then I have the right to protect my property.
As stated above the sheriff’s office had investigated in the past and there was no abuse found. So what is the rest of the story.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 9:33pmI’m with 101 and BallGame on this. The sheriff investigated before and found no abuse. Who called the TV news on the story? a disgruntled neighbor stemming from an ongoing property line dispute? and b**ch ex-wife? who? the camera crew was invading this mans right to privacy and they deserved more than a stick, IMO.
As far as the fun you all are having with the guys lack of teeth, –come on people! I thought here at the Blaze you’d be above that kind of childishness.
Do you know if the red bucket he was carrying wasn’t full of grain and molassas. At least just before the attack. Or does he tote it around for no reason! I don’t think guy is as mean as he was mad, and probably with good reason.
Report Post »BlueCollared
Posted on January 7, 2011 at 10:28pmI’m with ballgame on this one. If he‘s been reported twice and there hasn’t been any abuse found, then to keep taunting the man is just harassment. Can’t blame the man for being pissed off. Those of you who think this man is a violent man, are too sensitive. He‘s loud but notice he didn’t swing at his head, just give him a tap on the leg, because he meant for the cameraman to leave. A lot of bark no real bite. If the cameraman was on the man’s property, he should’ve asked him one time to leave. After that, a swift kick in the a$$

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 3:56pmAfraid I have to side with 101. Press has the right and obligation to report the news, but fairly and in a balanced way. Not to invent it and sensationalize things for ratings. This would have been a lead story, and the retraction, if it ever happened, would have been so quick and unobtrusive it would be almost subliminal. Both were wrong in this one.
