Shocking Vid: SUV Rolls Over Mother, Child at AZ Intersection

Like me, you might scream out loud when you see this video.
A mother was pushing her 4-year-old daughter in a stroller through a Scottsdale, AZ intersection on May 9. When the light turned green, they remained in the middle of the street. A black SUV apparently didn’t see them (they were partially obstructed by a large van) and hit the mother and rolled over the daughter:
When the mother, Regina Aldan, looked up after the incident, she thought her daughter, Perla, was dead. But miraculously, neither Regina nor Perla were seriously hurt. Here’s the video:
Video: SUV Runs Over Stroller: MyFoxPHOENIX.com
KSAZ-TV reports the driver will not face charges:
Based on witness accounts and laws that require drivers to yield to pedestrians, the driver was cited on scene. But after reviewing the video, the investigating officer has asked that the citation be dismissed.
Scottsdale Police determined that the SUV driver‘s view was obscured and that it would’ve been nearly impossible for the SUV to yield to the family, who ran directly into the path of the vehicle.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:29pmThe same thing happened to me on 35th ave. and Bell. Only difference was that there was no baby and the lady ran into the side of my pick-up because she was late for her bus. All I new was that I felt and heard a thump and saw the woman lying on the street from my rear veiw mirror. In the early morning hours on my way to work I instanty had an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach. The lady was unharmed thank God and admitted that it was her fault for the reason stated above. It dose not matter if the driver was cited or not, I know not one day will go by or every intersection he turns on that this incodent will be on his mind. I have been living with mine for about 15 years.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:28pmI see plenty of fault here on both parties and can’t see why the driver was let off with no charges. I’m sorry, but if I hit a hard bump in the road, my eyes are all over the place looking for the cause. If I hit a stroller with a child and the woman walking is on the driver’s side… I’d have slammed on the brakes and rushed out to see what had happened, not continued to drive. The police seriously believe that someone can drive over a child and stroller without noticing they’ve hit something?
Definitely wrongdoing on both sides, regardless of nationality.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 1:05pmYour making assumptions
1) That a driver of an SUV that large will hear the impact, who‘s the say the stereo wasn’t loud
2) That the driver meant to continue to drive away, the video doesn’t show enough to support that. Also, seeing a child go under the front of your car could cause some people to panic and take a few seconds to react.
3) Imagine the child’s arm get rolled over, it’s easily broken. Now imagine it’s under the wheel and you slam on the breaks, changes are the child looses the arm.
4) Do you think for sure the driver saw them ? From the camera’s angle, looked like it, but from the drivers perspective I’m not so sure !
Have you ever driven an SUV that big, you realize the top of the hood is nearly 3 ft off the ground. I suspect the driver saw the mother and focused on her, not even realizing they were rolling over the child.
Read English or not, what that mother did was foolish in every sense. I’ve seen hundreds of mother pushing strollers across streets, NEVER have I seen a mother run out into an intersection with the stroller way out in front of her like that.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 3:52pmAlex, please explain where there is fault by the SUV driver? If you only watched the mother and the SUV, then you missed both cars to the right of the SUV move through the intersection before the SUV made it to the white crossing line. That would suggest the SUV driver waited at least one count and probably two counts before accelerating. Would you have the same feelings for a driver of a car that had tried to cross the intersection through a red light?

Posted on May 21, 2011 at 5:12amyour eyes are all over the place like useing your x-ray vision to see thru big ol mobile homes . doors and thru the solid mess of carpet and metal under your 5 foot high SUV. 6 foot high where the visual site starts if you know what i mean (for head relationship in the vehicle) sure i belive you. still agree that the driver saw nothing till too late and never saw the stroller. And for the people who say the driver didnt stop the driver did stop, but the damage was done. but the good news no-one was seriuosly hurt

Posted on May 21, 2011 at 6:57amHi Alex- I have viewed the video twice, and feel that the mother (pedestrian) was more at fault in this situation. As somebody else has pointed out, there were other cars that proceeded through the intersection before that black SUV started to move. Also, that white van to the left of the SUV was HUGE- it HAD to have obstructed that SUV driver’s view! I will concede that the van did not move at all, so perhaps THAT driver might have seen and yielded to those pedestrians.
Just because the SUV was not shown to immediately stop on the screen does not necessarily mean that he/she did not stop at all. It is possible that you feel that charges might be justified against the driver because of a probable hit & run? Perhaps there is footage that has not been seen, coupled with accounts of the witnesses on the scene, that would explain why charges were not filed against the SUV driver.
Enough has been said about that mother already. I will simply say that she was not being cautious enough. If I am crossing a busy road along Scottsdale, AZ with a stroller on hand, I better be ABSOLUTELY certain that there is enough time to start crossing the street.
I am glad that the pedestrians are ok, but that could’ve been a very fatal outcome! I hope that many lessons had been learned that day.

Or does your christianity only kick in at certain times? Shame on you who are joking about this.
From the video, the woman was walking too slow to get across, and the driver didn’t bother to look first before going ahead. Both at fault.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 3:44pmDid you not notice both cars to the SUV’s right start to go before the driver of the SUV did? What was the mother thinking when she saw both of those cars move through the intersection? We have all been at a red light daydreaming and suddenly realized the light had changed and stepped on the gas. From the view we cannot tell how long the light had been green, but it was long enough for two cars to begin moving and the mother to be running .

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:07pmHonestly you people, what a bunch of Trolls…WHO CARES IF SHE’S MEXICAN!!! Her daughter got RUN OVER! Looking at the video, the driver (regardless or race/ethnicity) was in the right. I know that walk lights almost always allow sufficient enough time to get across, so if this lady was barely half way through when the traffic light turned green (usually a good 15-30 seconds after the walk light has already changed to “don’t walk”), she obviously was crossing against the light. No the driver is not at fault, EXCEPT that they did not bother to STOP AFTER RUNNING SOMEONE OVER! Where is the decency, the compassion?

If the police highest officals issued a cit and later repealed it after close examination i have to agree with it being the women pushing the kid in the strollers fault . does anyone relize they are playing it in super slow motion after the first shot of it. This lady was crossing with her child as its been said 4 feet in front of her. and the light had to have been a dead red for the pedestrian.

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 8:53pmThe article is a bit confusing. They say the driver didn’t stop but obviously she did or I am certain she would have gotten a citation for leaving the scene of an accident. They mom and child are very lucky to be alive.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 1:08pmI’m also going to have to disagree. You have no idea what that looked or sounded like from the drivers perspective, maybe they only saw the mother and panic’d, not realizing the child was under the SUV. Even from our angle, which was better then the drivers, could you see the kid in front of the SUV ?
The driver may have froze, but the mother is completely at fault for putting the driver in that position and putting her daughter’s life at risk.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 1:27pmAre you out of your mind??? I’ve been driving for 20 years and I can tell from the angle of the camera what it would look like from within the car and if the driver was paying attention he/she EASILY would have seen the mother standing within feet of their front left bumper. Before she started running (which means she was walking) through the intersection the two cars to the far right had cleared the intersection. Additionally, walking/running from around the front of a travel home is just as crazy and even more so seeing as the cars she was trying to cross in front of had a green light.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 2:00pmI don’t think it had anything to do with being able to read English, as most of these signs show a green walking figure or a red slash over the walking figure. You just have to be smart enough to understand a simple image and not walk out into traffic. In some places, they even have a count-down meter which tells you how much red light you have left. You don’t walk into traffic 20 seconds after it says to walk, because anyone knows the light will change. To try and run across when you see the traffic start moving is just plain ignorant. You step back to the curb. This lady is one thorn short of a cactus.
