Gripping Video: Cops Gun Down Carjacking Suspect on Live TV as Bystander Ducks for Cover

A carjacking suspect who stole two cars on Thursday and led police on an auto chase is dead after police opened fire, spraying his car with a myriad of bullets. And the moment was all caught on video.

Police say the suspect began brandishing his weapon and pointing it at people at a local Shell gas station, prompting them to take action. But police have come under scrutiny because a bystander can be seen ducking for cover — with the gas nozzle still in his vehicle — as the bullets whiz by just feet away.

The shootout was played live on local TV, much to the horror of some anchors:

KABC-TV has more background:

Authorities are saying that more than one officer opened fire on the suspect, but they are not saying how many officers or how many rounds.

The violence erupted at 7:30 p.m. at the Shell station at Vermont Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. The male suspect with long hair who some mistook as a woman was dead at the scene and his car was riddled with bullet holes.

One customer was caught in the crossfire as he was pumping gas and ducked on the ground.

Investigators say it all began when the 20-year-old suspect carjacked a woman in San Bernardino just before 3:30 p.m. Three hours later, police say the suspect then abandoned that vehicle and carjacked a 65-year-old man at gunpoint in East Los Angeles. A short time later, police spotted that vehicle and a chase ensued for about an hour.

The suspect drove through Hollywood and Koreatown before pulling into the gas station.

The station also interviewed eyewitnesses, one who said the police fired approximately “20 times or 30 times:”

“I saw a guy with a gun behind my car and after that the police came,” Harry Hahn, the bystander, told KCLA-TV. “Police said, ‘Just go down!’”

Suicide By Cop, in three easy steps. Step 1: Steal a car, and lead cops on a dangerous chase. Step 2: Steal a second car and repeat step 1. Step 3: Wave gun around at cops, and accidentally misfire.

Good job cops, one less ******* on the streets.

Those are very mean and spitefull comments, and you need to retract them.

This young man was just expressing himself. Rich people get to drive cars, why should he not get the same advantage. had teachers, parents, and authorities just listened, and given him more trophies, this would never have happened.

Now how can we spin this, and blame gun ownership and make ground from this tragedy.

fellow libs unite, get out and recruit, we just lost a vote for Obama and need to gin up another.

I think we are seeing a rise in crime and from ordinary people who have never been in any trouble in their lives. A switch has been flipped in our thinking, people are losing hope and when hope is gone they lose it. We will see more of this in the near future. Society is cracking! An armed robbery at the Montclair Mall last night outside LA where four person went into the Ben Bridge jewelry store and raided it. The place was locked down and the assailents got stuck inside. This kind of stuff is normal everyday goings on in the LA areas. Another woman arrested for having sex with her students and the list goes on and on.

Here’s my problem: What was downstream of the gunfire? What happened to the ricochets?
If their gunfire hit other people, they would have been responsible, and we would be responsible financially.
If they shoot to save a life, I’m ok with it. If they shoot in a crowded area without absolute necessity, I do not want them saying they are protecting people – they are the threat.

      George,

Many of these events have one thing in common – they are in California – or insert other liberal state. Criminals there have no fear of the average citizen shooting back. Places like New York, Chicago, and LA treat you like an incompetent child that must rely on the government for their needs. Sadly that is what people in those locations want, they want politicians that take care of them and are willing to give up a lot to get that. I agree with you that society is crumbling but if the schools teach that everything is OK and that you should never judge, then there is only one outcome – chaos.

Are you saying there was no person or traffic down range? If that is what you are saying, how do you know?
Are you saying they were lucky? That is an incredibly weak argument to what I posted.

Cops don’t shoot people for stealing cars. They do shoot people who carjack cars (big difference) and wave guns around whie doing it. I got to witness a car jacking and its almost imediate conclusion. The idiot did it while a paired up cop car happened to be driving by near Detroit. They don’t treat carjackers well since they are very very prone to killing.

In response to collateral damage in shoot outs, last Memorial Day weekend there was a similar shooting incident at South Beach in Miami. Some nut was driving around in a car attempting to ram the cops and get away. The police then opened fired and discharged if I remember correctly around 100 rounds. The driver was killed but 4 bystanders were wounded as well. They found no firearms on the suspect.

Stray bullets can injure bystanders. Then again 100+ rounds is over kill. But this carjacker will not be missed.

They shot and killed a guy who smashed some windows at a fast food restaurant just a few weeks ago and this time they shoot a guy to death in a vehicle he stole. Freaking incompetent jackasses. Too many lives have been lost or ruined by these people. Yet, they’ll let organized crime, celebrity crime, and OWS go on like there’s nothing to take issue with.

The vast majority of you posting in response to this really need a solid reality check. Where’s your humanity? This is someone dead for stealing a car. Is that really the ideal outcome when someone commits theft? You freaks. It’s responses to stories like this that give conservatives a bad name. You people don’t represent me. You don’t represent the majority of conservatives. You represent a delusional minority within the conservative movement.

What is it you guys are missing here? This wasn’t an enemy combatant on a battlefield. This wasn‘t someone that was in the act of threatening someone’s life directly. They were trapped in the car. The police opened up with a ridiculously over the top response killing a thief and putting the lives of multiple other people in danger. No decent law enforcement official would watch this and applaud it. It’s reprehensible. And even in a justified shooting, you don’t cheer for the death of the criminal. What twisted sick view of the world do you people have that you cheer for death?

I was on the front line for months confronting OWSers about their idiocy claiming police brutality. Were any of you? I have family in law enforcement. Do any of you? Is there a single Christian among you? If so, where is your outrage at the comments cheering death? The culture of this country is sinking into a pit, and it isn’t just happening on the left.

      @MarsBarsTru7

A little reality check for you dude.

Less than 150 years ago, the good christian people of this nation hung folks for stealing horses.

News flash for you- the cops did not shoot him for stealing a car. the man jacked a car. Do you know what that means? It means he ran up, pointed a gun at the driver, forced him out of the car, and drove off. That is considered deadly force. If the driver had a gun, he could legally shoot the car jacker. This was not some kid that went for a joy rid in grandmas station wagon.

After jacking one car, he jacked another. Once trapped, he pointed his gun at police. This is considered deadly force. He has already shown a propensity for violence, criminal behavior by jacking two cars at gun point.

What did you expect the cops to do? give him a time out?

when you jack cars at gun point, then point a gun at cops, do not be surprised when they open up in unison, and kill your butt. It is kind of how it works.

Extract your head from your butt, and catch a clue.

The cops? not only a bit of overkill, much more importantly, the azzez were firing away with the guy pumping gas pretty much in the line of fire, but at least the guy on the other side of the pump appearing to hold his fire. The bystander could have very easily been hit and fortunately wasn’t. Not exactly good police work, pretty much plain and simple. @RANGERP This isn’t the battlefield soldier. This isn‘t someone in Afghanistan that’s a Taliban member holding an assault rifle shooting at cops. You aren’t judge, jury, and executioner in the field in America. There is protocol. This is a civilian situation.

If a guy points a gun at cops, does he deserve to get shot at? Yeah. He does. I don’t dispute that. However, police train constantly for this type of situation and these guys didn’t handle it the way police are trained to handle it. Furthermore, however much this guy “deserved” to be shot to death or not doesn’t change the “wrongness” of the dialogue on this website. People are saying he deserved to die for being a thief. So-called Christian priests tortured people in the Spanish Inquisition for various dubious reasons. Does it make it right? Do you actually think citing that historically people have been hung for stealing horses qualifies your moral position? What about slaves? Christians owned slaves before. Does that make it right?

Right is right, and wrong is wrong. Morality is absolute. It is wrong to kill someone for thievery. It is wrong to cheer for someone’s death. Who the criminal was is clear. The police weren’t criminals. However, they SUCKED at their job and cost someone his life and potentially injured others because of their incompetence. *That* is my position.

@Spanky – You forget that in California cops can’t shoot guns for practice. All bullets have serial numbers and when shot you have to log all shot bullits. Here in Oklahoma our OHP officers have AR-15′s with 30 shot clips. If 3 or 4 of them were shooting the turkey would have had about 100 hits on his body.

Boggles the mind with the state of affairs. Why use anything other than a .45 acp and if your hand can’t handle it, stay in the office. PC sucks on the street and actually has no place. No. It‘s called shoot ’em till their dead and then some.

How many shots would be enough? 2? 5?

Anyone with a problem about number of rounds fired, I ask this question.

Would you want to go up to the car to check the perp after 4 or 5 shots?

You kill em with authority. If I was the cop with a shotty I would be blasting holes all the way up the side and give him another one when I got to the window.

It’s not a video game. There are no re-spawns. You don’t get extra points for 1 shot, head shots. Well, snipers do but they were not on the scene and it was not a situation for them.

You have to kill the bad before he can kill someone else.

If the cops had only fired a few shots the bad guy could’ve unloaded into a gas pump and killed EVERYONE within 100 yards or more.

Shock and Awe….it also gets the attention of other jackers…..not all unfortunately but those who don’t see that car-jacking could kill them, well, they are the next breaking news story…AND target practice.

No. In court, he’s the accused and the defendant. On the street, he’s the perpetrator and the suspect. I know, it does great violence to the English language to say that a person whom the police witnessed with their own eyes perform violence and crime is merely “suspected” of those crimes, but there it is.

the cops did their job. the car jacker pointed his gun at the cops and the cops don’t wait until one of them is shot. you shoot until the perp is down and shooting thru a car and hitting your target is hard to do. thats why so many shots were fired. the perp would have killed someone for sure, remember he was stealing cars at gun point.

Criminals in LA should know by now that they will never get away in a car chase. I have seen too many car chases in LA to know that there is just too much traffic to get away. even if you try to go into residential areas, they have so many choppers in the air, following, that your location is always known. This criminal was not very smart at all. The police probably did our gene pool a favor by getting rid of his bad genes.

A little loose with your headlines there folks, you might rephrase the caption to read “Police use deadly lethal force to subdue a car jacking subject who pointed a weapon at them”.

I was recently talking with someone about the number of perceived police brutality and “over the top” responses and they brought up an interesting point. Is that number growing because a percentage of law enforcement have reached a point of frustration with the failures in our justice system? Are they making sure the criminal gets some sort of punishment because they know there is a good chance the bad guys will walk on a ridiculous technicality or only receive a slap on the wrist?

Not saying its a factor or not, but it is an aspect I hadn’t considered.

yes brandishing a weapon at a police officer is justifible use of deadly force. the officers warned several times and it went unheaded. officers have 1/10th of a second to determine this. with innocent people around they must do what they deem necessary to prevent further loss of life.

bottom line is this if you are ordered to drop your weapon(or anything that can appear to be a weapon) and you refuse then the officer has a duty to elimante this situation by any means necessary.

Remember a number of years ago when criminals were robbing tourists down in Florida in rental cars? It was so bad that the FBI went to the prisons to interview inmates to find out why. They were told that because of the new gun laws down there, the criminals figured out it was safer to rob people in rental cars leaving airports because they were sure they wouldn’t have a gun and be able to shoot them. We should all be armed and let the dumb-a@@ criminals focus on the flower-picking, koolaid drinking libs.

30 shots isn’t unusual. You have 5 or 6 cops shooting 5 or 6 times, not hard to comprehend. Now if it was one cop 20-30 rounds, then I could see it might be a little over kill, but until you know how many actually hit the target, you can’t judge the number of rounds.
