Shop Owner Behind John 3:16 Oil Change Discount Defends Policy to Glenn

“Man, I just was tired of all the bad things that was discussed and I just wanted to talk about something good in my life.”

That’s how Charlie Whittington, owner of the Kwik Kar oil-change shop in Plano, TX, explained to Glenn Beck on radio Friday why he decided to introduce a John 3:16 discount. As we brought you earlier Friday, any customer who recites the Bible verse at the shop gets $15 off of their bill.

Whittington said he has gotten some pushback for the policy, but that it’s come only from people who call or e-mail. Otherwise, most people are fine with it, especially considering he lets people who don’t know it by heart look it up on their phones or even use a copy he has posted in his office. For him, it’s about the spirit of the promotion, not the letter of it. How biblical.

In fact, after Glenn’s co-host Pat Gray asked jokingly if he could discuss Wicca with Whittington, Whittington responded, “You could talk about anything. Golly, we’re in America, you can talk about anything you want to.”

“Hang on just a second,” Glenn interjected. “May I just say to the entire United States of America: that last sentence from Charlie is why everyone should move to Texas. Because it’s common sense. This is total common sense. This is who we are as America.”

But what if Pat recites all of Ephesians 1-10? Could that get Pat a free brake job? Maybe not, according to Whittington. That could put him out of business.

You can listen to the entire interview below, which includes more of Whittington’s response to critics and plenty more jokes from Glenn and Pat:

I heard this gentleman’s comments on GB today. He is an inspiration! I wanted to let him know I share his feelings about needing to have something positive to reflect on. I recently started a website dedicated to just that (rwbtv.com). I am a neophyte at this website thing but I wanted somewhere that we could celebrate what makes us great as Americans and this guy’s story is exactly what I think we should celebrate!

Discussed this with a liberal neighbor today.
She is outraged. It’s illegal discrimination! He can’t give a discount to only a “specific group” of people.

My answer: Sure he can. No different than the government says it’s legal to give cheaper college tuition to so called ethnic minority students. They fit the definition of a “specific group”.

Her reply: Well that’s not the same thing at all. They deserve it.

      Boggles the mind….

I’ve just returned from getting service at this guys shop. Nice of a guy as can be!

I told him I wasn’t there to get a discount, that I’m not particularly religious anyway, but I’m happy to support any business owners right to operate however they want as long as it does not harm another. I got a fair deal on break fluid replacement and shook the hand of a man who understands what freedom is all about.

He was in no way coercing or compelling customers against their will to recite the passage, despite what the man who complained claims. Ends up it is the man who complained who attempted the use of coercion to harm this guys business and force him to do as the man who complained pleases. Unfortunately, for that man, he has failed to grasp the concept of liberty and instead used the concept of tyranny it its place.

A free man has the choice to run his business how he see’s fit. Other free men have the right to patronize or boycott his business based on how he runs it.

The Bible Verse is wonderful. I wish I could to Dallas for an oil change. Compare this: John 3:15-16 is to the Oil Change as A Compromising Republican Candidate is to us losing in 2012. Both give you something for a lesser price. Maybe the Establishment wants Obama to win. Ever think of that?. It won’t hurt them. I think I’ll use his marketing technique in my business!

      * slavery is forcing someone do provide goods or services against their will. *

thank you for illustrating the point that God can refer to whichever God you worship. many people forget that. and i think it’s their basis for taking “In God We Trust” off our money… it affects all people of America by doing that… and even the atheist have nature as their God, admittedly by them, they came from (created by) nature, they will return to it upon death. so… they still have a God and Creator by their own belief and scientific evidence…. unless they are claiming they don’t believe in nature… which is a, very real, living entity…. then i am speechless ;p

God exists and is known by many names… God does not appear as any particular form to everyone…. nature is living proof of this…

As far as the libertarian aspects of this I wouldn’t care if he required people to sing “Muscrat Love” to get the discount (I’d pay the extra). And if he wants to give the discount only to left handed Eskimos I wouldn’t care either.

That said, I’d still go to his business and recite the verse just to get the discount,

If he wished to discuss it further I’d have no problem in explaining why I think John 3:16 is an immoral and unethical verse mostly derived from ancient beliefs on human sacrifice and has a rather sinister undertone.

I frequent Chick-fil-A often also. Not because I agree with their Christian worldview but because they make damn good food and run a fine business.

Mr. Whittington sounds like a good and honest man.

Vennoye, if he wanted possitive conversations then he could have simply started them, rather than making a financial transaction contingent on reciting a Bible verse. Hand out a tract with the receipt or even charge the same low price for everyone and recite the verse to them as part of the service. The way he did it made the verse recital a price they paid for a reward. It inverts the Gospel.

This may sound like nit picking to some, but spiritual principles can turn on such things.

Just think what the witness of this might be for a non-Christian, one who doesn’t know the Gospel at all. Will he take seriously the text he was made to read or will he see it as a joke? His introduction to God’s word might be associated with manipulation or giving it lip service.

God’s word is too important to be made a gimick.
