Shopping Carts Powered by a Video Game System? It Could Happen

From the creators of the Board of Awesomeness — a skateboard controlled by Microsoft’s Kinect that we showed you last month — comes a slightly more practical use of the technology. Chaotic Moon Labs has tricked out a grocery store cart with the motion-sensing system and has begun testing it out in Whole Foods.

Wired reports that the “Smarter Cart” made its prototype debut recently in an Austin, Texas, Whole Foods store where it not only followed shoppers around, but could lead them to food they may have had a hard time finding. Here are some of its featured uses:

Using RFID, (Radio-frequency identification) the tablet can read items off of a smart-card shopping list, and then make recommendations to shoppers, using a speech and voice recognition as the interface. Smarter Cart can even offer up recipes and catch shopping mistakes (did you want low-fat or no-fat yogurt?).

GeekWire reports that kinks still have to be worked out of the “literally weeks old” project before it will become your second shadow down grocery store aisles. GeekWire also notes Microsoft is currently working with more than 300 companies to help make their dreams for Kinect technology a reality.

    well I can see may problems but on the up side stores would QUIT moving items within the store to make you look for them if every time they did that they would have to reprogram the cart.. I remember when they first came out with self check out people were STEALING big time.. I can see the government using this when they come out with FOOD COUPONS that only allows you X amount of things per your family size.. and IF you put unhealthy foods in the cart an alarm goes off so everyone in the store knows ..LOL.. than you have the fact that if you thought little old ladies ran you over with a cart WAIT till you get a unmanned/women cart trying to cut through people shopping to keep up with the owner of the stuff in the cart… I think it would be fun to run through the isles and lead the cart into knocking down end caps..LOL..

    @Theblaze

    How come I have to hit my back button so many times to go back to the homepage? This is the only site where this occurs. And if you post a comment, the only way to get back to the homepage is to click your logo at the top of the page…need to work on the navigation.

    Technology is great but for the sake of exploiting it we are making ourselves dolts. You’ll never see me using this.

      The biggest reason I get a shopping cart is to ride it like a skateboard, and race down the isles like a maniac. My right to do this is being stripped from me.

    There may be a little bit more than groceries missing next time these shoppers go out into their car to unload.
