Should Department Stores Be Open On Thanksgiving? Take Our Blaze Poll

Thanksgiving is less than ten days away and that means the official Christmas Holiday Shopping Season is also upon us. For years, the Friday after Thanksgiving was when stores threw open their doors at dawn, hoping to draw in the early bargain hunters. However, this year some companies will try to get a jump on the season and many will be opening their doors at midnight on Thanksgiving Day. A midnight opening means employees will have to be at work on Thanksgiving.
Some employees of Minnesota-based Target Stores are not pleased about their company’s plans, and one of them decided to speak up, taking his case to the court of popular opinion on the Internet.
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that a parking lot worker from a Target Store by the name of Anthony Hardwick posted the petition that has gotten over 90,000 “signatures” online on change.org.
Hardwick’s petition states:
A midnight opening robs the hourly and in-store salary workers of time off with their families on Thanksgiving Day. By opening the doors at midnight, Target is requiring team members to be in the store by 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. A full holiday with family is not just for the elite of this nation — all Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones and get a good night’s rest on Thanksgiving!
Join me in calling for Target retail stores to push back their original opening time of 5am on Black Friday.
Where do you stand on stores being opened on Thanksgiving?

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:44amI work for Kohl’s. They have too few “workers” who are willing to work around the holidays. Having Black Friday off means being able to spend time with family and friends on Thaksgiving. It means being able to finish eating dinner at 6pm; clean the dishes, and finish dessert and coffee by 7pm; and, drive home and get to bed by 8pm. It allows time to talk, and enjoy each others company. As a devout follower of Atlas Shrugged I don’t believe in passing laws to accomplish this. It’s all controlled by the power of the dollar. If the people don’t show up until 6am or 8am stores will take the hint. It up to the people. They’ll decide if I get sleep, and eventually if they’ll get sleep. Its not the stores that decide whether or not they stay open 24/7 (whether you are in Data Processing-I used to work in Data Processing, some people do have to work those days, somewhere else where your job looks safe, like cashier in banking). We decide how much sleep we get, and we pay the consequences. After all as the President would you want to pay some bleary-eyed clerk to service a few stragglers who come in and shop from midnight to 6am.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:49amThose of us from mid-coast Maine have either worked at LL Beans or know someone, family or other, who has. LL Bean is open every day of the year, it doesn’t matter what holiday it is. Does it suck as an employee? Yes. But it’s a fact of life when you sign up to work there. Newer employees have less of a say in when they are required to work. More established employees can trade and bargain for certain days. Its an enticement to continue working there to get that seniority.
So, with that said, it is a private enterprise and they can open or close when they want. If YOU choose not to shop there and be with family, so be it. If enough of YOU choose not to shop there on Christmas Day, then the private enterprise needs to reevaluate the day in question as to being open.
For LL Bean, Thanksgiving and Christmas are some of their biggest days. It becomes somewhat of a tradition to head off to Beans on Christmas afternoon and return things, peruse sales, etc. It is no different than those who go to the movies on either Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 7:36amI’m going to guess that CHRISTELLE and SWEETGOLD, and their ilk, want someone at work on Thanksgiving night so they can go SHOPPING at Target and are simply using the “this employee should be grateful he has a job” and the “appears a lot of people rather loaf than work” cards for their own narrow agenda. Additionally, I find the “loafer” label for someone who wants to be home with family similar to the “racist” label for anyone the Left deems to disagree with Obama. So I’m going to do some labeling myself and guess that these two “ladies” are well-heeled, callous Leftists who care not about anyone they view to be their inferiors. If they are not, they’d best keep their mouths shut since they would give Conservatism a bad name. EVERYONE deserves to celebrate Thanksgiving as a holiday free from paid labor.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 9:39amI remember when all stores were closed on Sunday. Period. Then they allowed gas stations to be open on Sundays for travelers, then they allowed mom and pop stores, then grocery stores, then they had 24 hour stores and then, they starting opening on the holidays… I personally HATE shopping during the holidays and on Sundays, nothing like going to church and then rummaging through the “gods” of atheism. When the stores were closed people had FAMILY days. people went out, and traveled or stayed home as a family and believe it or not people planned ahead and filled their tanks and shopped for their items on Friday and/or Saturday. Now, people go back 3-4 times for one event for there is no need to plan for there is always a fall back. Shame really. But I agree with another poster, it is their private business’ and their right. If more people said no to shopping on Sundays, never mind the holidays, the cost of labor lights etc would be enough to close the store on these days. But with our open culture, we get that 10-15% that wont go to church, and Family Planning would cringe at the thought of America promoting FAMILIES!!!. So, the stores stay open… oh well… God Bless America.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 10:11amSweetgold, It isn’t about “loafing” it is about our tradition of setting aside just one or two days a year that families can spend time together and give thanks for our blessings. With families spread out all across the Country, it is rare that they can all be together. The Holidays are one of the only times that people travel to get together and spend time with loved ones. Our productivity is among the highest in the world. We are not Greece or Europe Asia or Latin America where they take weeks off and all business shuts down. Is it too much to ask that people have two days a year to spend together. I don’t know how old you are, but 25-30 years ago most businesses were closed on Sunday, again for worship and or time together with family. Can’t people wait 8 more hours to push, shove and crush each other for bargains?

But don’t forget, you are who they are targeting and and you are who they are talking about. What you won’t see from merchants is: Respect for you. For your hard work, for your sacrifice, for your tenuous situation, for your struggle, for your business.
It used to be considered a sign of respect to see a business closed on Sunday. Now, the bottom line is the main concern. Not a sense of community or something bigger than just my wallet.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 12:01pmYeah, you’re missing something…it is called family time and holiday reflection. This isn’t being lazy, it is putting the spiritual in front of the commercial. There are some industries who have no choice but to work on holidays, specifically the health care industry. But department stores and warehouses most certainly have a choice, and that choice should be to be at home with their family.

There are plenty of people who would work for more pay on Thanksgiving or who would just move the day they celebrate with their family to fit their schedule. This is just one of those times when employees need to realize that their labor is a commodity to their employer and that they can choose to not work or renegotiate their wage for the hours worked that the employee holds at a premium. People just need to man up and think for themselves. If your job will fire you because you refuse to work on a national holiday and one of only a handful of days when you get to share time with your family, then get a new and better job and tell your current employer to politely pound sand.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 12:01amI’m not for telling any business when they can or cannot open. I’ll just tell them what I think about it.
I am a Black Friday shopper and have been for at least 15 years. At first, the stores would open at 6:00 AM. Then a couple of them wanted to get a jump on the others and opened at 5. Then 4. Now midnight?? That’s just plain crazy.
I get up early on Thanksgiving and run a local turkey trot (it has become a tradition). Afterwards, I go home and start cooking. Family comes over and we visit – then gorge ourselves. :) Clean up takes over an hour and by then I am dead on my feet. I need sleep.
This is a typical day for most people. I truly feel for anyone who has to go to work that night (that includes my daughter who is a nurse). To me, greed is written all over a store that opens at the stroke of 12:00. Not only is it not enticing, but it is a major turn-off. I’ll get up at 4:30 AM, like I have for the past few years, thank you.
Nordstrom’s even holds off decorating for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving. I like that way of thinking. Hey all other retailers… take note.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 8:31pmThe discussion is academic at best. Nobody forces you to shop on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other holiday. The fact that stores are able to lure shoppers out on holidays is testimony to the fact that we’ve become greedy and materialistic. Just how much can the meaning of a holiday be if it can be relegated to a place behind shopping? Is the answer really to go back to the days of so called ‘blue laws’? If there’s no business to be done, the stores won’t open. It’s not something that government should, or needs to, be involved in.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 8:28pmIsn‘t anything ’sacred’ anymore? Why do major department stores have to be open on Thanksgiving or even Christmas for that matter? Why can’t people just stay home and relax for a couple days, and reflect?
Report Post »The smaller locally owned ones can stay open if they want to,and get the extra business that they need.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 11:27pmSure, you tell my son (the anesthesiologist) to stay home and relax. He is on call this Thanksgiving so that if you have a heart attack the doctor, who is also on call, can take care of you.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:42pmThanksgiving is a holiday. I think everyone having one day to be with their family is not unreasonable. Last time I checked a department store was not an essential service.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 8:28pmIf the stores want to pay the overtime, it’s their choice to do it. A lot of workers might enjoy the chance to earn the extra cash. Nobody should be compelled to work however, on a national holiday.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 11:04pmThey are compelled to though. At the grocery store where I currently work, every single cashier has to work on Thanksgiving, or they lose their job. In order to give a shift to everyone, they all have to work 3 hours. So even though the whole day could be covered by half of the cashiers, they make everyone work to be “fair”.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 8:28pmEverybody I know who works in retail says it absolutely sux… hard work, long hours, low pay, working holidays, evenings, weekends.
The flip side of the coin… nobody forced you into it. But like in a restaurant, when you give good service… you ought to be able to accept a tip. Most places won’t allow them to get tips… but where there’s a will… there’s a way.
Tip your retail workers when you can, the word will get out… and the service might get better in the process wherever it might be bad.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 11:08pmOr better yet, when someone gives you good service, call their boss and tell them. If they get enough calls, they might actually get a raise and make more than minimum wage. Usually, people only call with complaints.

YEPIMACONSERVATIVE – Many moons ago I used to be a waitress. I was raising and providing for my two little girls who were 2 and 4 years old at the time. It was stated that everyone had to work on Christmas Day. I was okay with it because I had the 4 to 10 shift. But as the day neared, I was told that I was needed to work breakfast. I went in because I had no choice, but I kept crying! It broke my heart to be apart from my babies that morning.
I need to go hug my sleeping husband right now for being a wonderful provider.

So think a little before you start ranting.
