Should Obama Take a Vacation Right Now?

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — The president needs a vacation too, right? The never ending debate over the appropriateness and timeliness of presidential retreats always seems to be called into question, regardless of who is serving in the White House. In a position that deals with a different crisis every day, critics are constantly asking: Is there ever really a good time for the president to go on vacation? President Barack Obama‘s summer getaway to Martha’s Vineyard has reignited the seemingly annual debate.

Given the demands of the job and the always-looming possibility of an unexpected crisis at home or abroad, the political perils of a presidential vacation never seem to go away. This summer, the vacation dilemma is compounded by the country’s urgent demand for jobs, the debt crisis that‘s left Washington with a hangover and the public’s frustration with political gridlock.

The president has promised that new jobs initiatives are coming. But the people won‘t hear the details or any other solutions to the nation’s economic woes until he returns from his summer sojourn to Martha’s Vineyard, the wealthy island enclave off the Massachusetts coast where he and his family will vacation for the third straight year.

Obama is beginning a 10-day trip Thursday.

The president isn’t the only one taking a break this summer. Most lawmakers left town in early August, right after reaching a deal with the White House to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a potentially catastrophic government default. Congress isn’t expected back in session until early September.

Should President Obama Take a Marthas Vineyard Vacation Right Now?With lawmakers away, there’s probably not much Obama could get done on the economic front even if he did cancel the trip. And even if Congress stayed in Washington, too, there are no quick fixes for the country’s deep economic problems.

“They don’t have anything to act upon,” Rich Galen, a Republican consultant, said of both Obama and Congress. “If anyone knew what the answer to this was, they’d do it.”

Then there’s the issue of perception. Obama will be vacationing at a rented, multimillion-dollar estate on an island known as a haven for the rich and famous at a time when millions of people are out of work and countless more are financially strapped.

Bill Clinton’s aides were so concerned about vacation perceptions that they polled the public before deciding where he should go. While Clinton preferred trips to Martha’s Vineyard, polling pushed him to the more rugged Jackson Hole, Wyo.

George W. Bush was criticized for spending nearly 500 days at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, during his two terms in office. He was there in August 2001 when he received a CIA briefing paper warning of al-Qaida’s intentions to strike the United States – about a month before the Sept. 11 attacks would occur. In 2005, he remained on vacation after Hurricane Katrina swamped New Orleans and devastated the Gulf Coast. His presidency suffered from his response to the storm and his decision to not immediately return to Washington.

Last summer, he was chided for not taking his family on a Gulf Coast vacation following the BP oil spill. When he finally did travel to the Florida Panhandle for a weekend, his attempts to soothe public concern about the safety of the region’s beaches were tainted when the White House released a photo of the president and daughter Sasha swimming in water that turned out not to be the Gulf.

Perhaps mindful of the president’s image, the White House booked Obama on a three-day, economy-focused bus tour through the Midwest right before the vacation. He also traveled to Michigan last week to speak at a factory that makes batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday that Obama should stay in Washington and call Congress back to work.

“If you’re the president of the United States, and the nation is in crisis – and we’re in a jobs crisis right now – then you shouldn’t be out vacationing,” the former Massachusetts governor said on a Chicago radio program. “Instead you should be focusing on getting the economy going again. And, yeah, go back to the office yourself, pull back members of Congress and focus on getting the job done.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney said he doesn’t think the public begrudges the president a break to recharge and spend time with his family. Besides, Carney noted that the president is never really off-duty since White House advisers go with him and he still receives regular briefings on national security, the economy and other matters.

“The presidency travels with you,” said Carney. He also noted that Martha’s Vineyard is close enough to Washington that Obama could get back quickly if needed.

Two of Obama’s counterparts had to cut short their summer vacations due to events at home. British Prime Minister David Cameron returned early from Italy to preside over the response to riots spreading across England. French President Nicolas Sarkozy ended his Mediterranean vacation early amid fears that his country’s credit rating could be downgraded.

Short of an unexpected crisis, Obama seemed determined to follow through with his Martha’s Vineyard plans. He has adamantly rejected the notion of calling Congress back from its break.

“The last thing we need is Congress spending more time arguing in D.C.,” he said in a speech last week. “What I figure is, they need to spend more time out here listening to you and hearing how fed up you are.”

Political analyst Thomas Mann said that would be all well and good, if that were really how politicians spent their time in their districts.

“Most members of Congress go home and see people who think just like they do,” said Mann, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. “It would be wonderful if people in Congress actually had to confront citizens who disagreed with them.”

    Both President Obama and Congress are loser! Fears of a global recession are real. Today the jobs report came out and 408,000 is the first time filers number;which will mean that unemployment will remain at the stubburn 9% level.
    Gold is over 1800, markets taking hits worldwide. flight to Treasuries. Uncertainty and worry won’t go away any time soon.

      Yes, take a LOOOONNNNGGGG vacation, like until after the 2012 race is over and use tax payer monies because it will still be cheaper than when one of your back room executive ordered deals/plans get enacted… In fact go over seas and pick out a nice house, tax payers will buy it and never come back..

      Obama is busy promoting class warfare attacking and blaming his own failures on the wealthy. It must be a crime of some kind to agitate and antagonize one class of people against another. I suppose “class terrorism” or class terrorist fits Obama in what he is doing. That cuts at the very heart of the American Dream, “anyone can work hard and make it here”, Obama wants to show you what hard work will get you, demonized.

      Vacation? You mean Obama was working? It’s hard to tell. I thought he was campaigning and generally just hanging around as usual. When does he actually work? I’m not sure Obama knows what work is, since he’s never really held a real job. Now come the photo ops of the family walking on the beach and pictures of them eating everything from ice cream to french fries. At least he isn’t in the office creating more executive orders.

      Such ongoing extravagance, and a lot of it on our dime, during such an economic crisis sends a very negative and thoughtless impression to the millions of Americans who are suffering unemployment or under-employment…

      active and his playing golf for two hours every day keeps
      his weight down so he doesn’t have to worry about a few
      extra calories.”
      When asked about the enormous expenses associated with
      Tunnel One Carney responded by reminding reporters that
      the Tunnel will be a permanent part of future Presidents’ travel
      logistics and that “someday, long after Obama’s second term, a far-

      Total costs for Obama’s layabout on the Vineyard are

      I voted, I’m in the middle on this on this one because my catagory wasnt available. I think that Obumma should take a really long vacation and come back after the 2012 election is over and he lost. I just dont want him around so that he can inflick any more harm to our country.

      I understand the stress the President is under and I understand the need for a vacation; however, does he have to go to one of the most expensive places? I am unemployed and cannot take a vacation because I am actively looking for work. My husband and son went on vacation without me. Where did they go? Some where ritzy? No, they went down and visited his parents!!! No hotel, no eating out, no entertainment.

      When does the shared sacrifice happen? My husband to a 13% cut in pay in 2009. Since than he has received a 6% raise. He is still not where he was before this DEPRESSION started!!! We have had to cut back. We have no credit card debit, only one car payment, and a house payment and we still almost lost our home. We lost $70k in my husbands 401k and our propery value went from $303k to $150k yet our property taxes remain the same as when we were at $303k. I have never voted republican but now we are looking for anyone who can replace Obama and do a better job.

      He might as well take a vacation. He has been on one since he took office in January of 2009. Maybe if we are lucky he will get hit in the head with a errant golf ball and our problems will be over. Well, let me take that back. There is still “Jolting Joe Biden” and “Drain the Swamp Pelosi” to go through before things might start looking up. Our best hope is November 2012 or a Civil War or Revolution. A lot of people I believe are starting to come around to that way of thinking. The country needs to be purged of the “progressive liberal insanity” that has engulfed it. Logic, reason, knowledge, the truth,facts, these all have no bearing on their quest to control the people and the country. Somehow over 230 plus years ago, Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin and the rest of the Founding Fathers of this nation knew these idiots would be coming.       I looked it up, and they say it costs between $30,000 and $50,000 a week to stay there. The Obama’s are going to pay “a portion” of it and the taxpayers get to foot the bill for Secret Service and STAFF. I wonder if Michelle is taking all 21 of her staff with her? Gotta get her hair and nails done while she’s there. They also said the grounds are kept up by Brazilians, and 75% are illegal.

    Should BO take a vacation? Let’s see, he just spent a couple mil of American taxpayer $$ in Canada for buses for a 3 day tour in the midwest about jobs. What an idiot? What a waste of taxpayer dollars! All this guy knows how to do is spend hardworking taxpayers money, griping and passing the blame. The truth is, what he is doing is working, destroying our country more and more every day. I say, let him go on sabatical till Nov. 2012. He won’t be missed!       Check out the Felonious Munk story & listen to what he says…especially after he rips Obama…he asks Obama “You can’t even balance a checkbook, or stop spending?” then he says: “You don’t pay your bills, I don’t pay mine!” He was telling us to stop sending money to DC when all they’re going to do is waste it on vacations, buses, trips, parties, etc,,, I wish to God there was a way we could do that! Just stop sending your money to DC…of course then the IRS will come after you…and let’s face it; according to DHS, we’re all terrorists anyway! The Presidency goes with the President – his advisers, his papers, everything he is working on, the nuclear suitcase – they all go everywhere with him – so actually the only thing that changes when a president goes on so called “vacation” is the room he is working in.       I’m not one to defend W on many things, but when W went on “vacation”, it was usually to Crawford, TX. He didn’t require renting space for SS and entourage… This halfrican POS has been on vacation/campaigning his whole (only) term.
