Should Prayer Be Allowed At the Ground Zero Memorial Event (Poll)?

The 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks has triggered painful memories, grief and intense reflection. In addition to these natural reactions, it has also sparked a fierce battle over faith and prayer during this year’s memorial remembrance.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s decision not to invite clergy to this year’s commemorative event is at the root of some fairly intense debate. In addition to excluding clergy, the mayor has also decided not to invite first responders — yet another action that has sparked a great deal of controversy.

According to Bloomberg, it is most prudent to focus upon the victims and their families as the nation marks 10 years since the nation’s most horrific terror attack occurred. His administration has made the claim — and a correct one at that — that clergy have never been invited to participate in the official event. Thus, in his view, this year’s remembrance is no different.

While some would agree with Bloomberg that faith and religion shouldn’t play a part in the official ceremony, others contend that refusing to include religious leaders is insensitive. Plus, there’s the additional fact that the 10-year anniversary is a milestone of sorts — one that some believe should be observed by including religious leaders in the mix.

For many people, faith — regardless of which particular religion they subscribe to — was an important element in peoples’ ability to cope in the wake of the attacks. So, critique of Bloomberg’s decision has been both harsh and plentiful.

The announcement drew particular outrage from Rudy Washington, who served as deputy mayor under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and who organized an interfaith service at Yankee Stadium following the attacks back in 2001. He told the Wall Street Journal the following:

“This is America, and to have a memorial service where there’s no prayer, this appear to be insanity to me. I feel like America has lost its way.”

But Washington’s not alone. On Thursday, The Christian Post reported that the Family Research Council, a conservative family values group and Democratic NYC Councilman Fernando Cabrera had teamed up to petition Bloomberg to change his mind on the clergy, prayer and first-responders ban.

The two parties have apparently collected more than 62,000 signatures asking to mayor to allow these groups to participate. At a press conference also held on Thursday Senior FRC Legal Studies Fellow Cathy Ruse said:

“Perhaps for Mayor Bloomberg, God and faith do not mean much, but it is exceedingly tone deaf not to recognize their importance to most Americans.”

And as we reported earlier this week, Giuliani joins these forces in disagreeing with the decision to exclude faith and clergy. During a recent speech he joked that the microphones won’t melt if religious leaders are invited to participate. Watch his remarks, below:

Giuliani’s track record on including clergy — whether right or wrong in nature — in 9/11 events speaks for itself. Only 12 days after the Twin Towers were destroyed, the former mayor held a memorial service called “Prayer for America.” Similar faith-based services were held, as the Post reports, by House and Senate chaplains in Washington, D.C. following the attack on the Pentagon.

New York City-based Christian leader Pastor Rick Del Rio shared his views on the clergy ban in an exclusive interview with The Blaze. Del Rio, who arrived at Ground Zero just minutes after the second tower collapsed, was an instrumental force in the days and months following the attacks.

He co-convened the Northeast Clergy Group / Ground Zero Clergy Task Force (NEC), an interdenominational coalition of regional ministers who counseled workers at Ground Zero and assisted in relief efforts. This year, his church is hosting an alternative prayer event called Reaching Out New York City on Saturday (the day before the anniversary). Below, see the trailer for Reaching Out:

Del Rio explained his frustrations with Bloomberg‘s refusal to include clergy in this year’s 9/11 tribute:

“I think the 10th anniversary is such a milestone. We should have gone to great measures to include all those who participated. I think it’s an affront to all those who are clergy or first responders who were [down there after 9/11].

It’s ridiculous. Its almost like [Bloomberg's] trying to re-write history. These were components that were invaluable to bringing the city back together.”

These components he’s referring to are faith and religious leaders — two pillars for many in the wake of the attacks. Del Rio went on to explain the notion that the tragedy caused people to flood back to God. Additionally, he explained the positive presence that clergy had at Ground Zero:

“[The workers] said to me ‘father we’re just thankful that you’re here. We’d like to see more [pastors] here.’ It was the presence of a godly person — maybe even the presence of religion…the ability to pray [with them] was something that brought comfort in a time of such great turmoil.”

Of course, some would respond by explaining that this weekend’s event is for the public and that religion has no place intermixing government. These individuals would more readily align themselves with Bloomberg, as he attempts to hold a more secular commemorative event that is completely devoid of religious over or undertones.

What do you think? Should clergy be invited to participate in the memorial event at Ground Zero? Take our poll:

Mayor Bloomberg is confused. Apparently he believes the Memorial is about him rather than the community he serves. The community he serves is represented by many faiths. The people of New York turned their faces to their God for comfort in their pain. The pain is still present today, they still search for understanding. These kinds of answers and comfort can only come from our creed. Furthermore, the community of victims and survivors are the first responders and their families as much as anyone else who died or bears the scars of that horrible day. There is no one who deserves more recognition or appreciation than the first responders who risked all that day and will be asked to again someday. May God lift the scales from Mayor Bloomberg’s eyes that he may see how foolish his reasoning is. God bless all the men and women who work to protect us everyday. May God embrace the hearts of the victims families who long for their loved ones lost ten years ago this weekend.

As in previous posts. GOD is always among us but these guys should be there with the families on Sunday, not the political talking heads (with the exception of Guliani ).

GOD IS THERE/EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. Waiting for us to ‘see the light’ and come to him.

Islam’s god is satan. Satan is there too…as evil stalks the world. Satan ends up in the lake of fire and we get rid of evil for once and for all but with free choice, we all have to decide DAILY to follow GOD and side step evil. The GOOD that comes from 9/11 is the huge number of people who began to ask the right questions and finding the answers.

I can forgive brainwashed younger people for not knowing about GOD, but for anyone to deny HIS existence just tells me they are dumber than dirt. As far as Islam…since the 700 AD’s…they have been the purveyors of lies, murder, chaos and the dark ages. Look at the fruit. NOTHING good comes from this dastardly “ideology”. It’s not even a faith…it’s a ideology. and a murdering ideology to begin with. They are evil walking. They want to control the world. They want to kill all of us. They will be roundly defeated. Then, they will live in hell. Let’s pray that the Muslims who have been sucked into this hell-hole can come to know Christ and get away from this hell. We already know that the leaders and IMAMS will end up in hell where they belong.

Thats why the world is in the shape its in.. because man has forgotten to to worship Him, to pray to Him.. in other words most of the world has put God aside like a old worn out pair of shoes.. and in doing so.. well you will get the resy of the story. The point is not whether or not God is there. The point is, do we acknowledge him? Reach into a pocket and grab any denomination. Look at the obverse side. Do we still trust in God? Clearly the Mayor of New York does not, and it is a travesty and despicable what he is doing. In my humble opinion, it is an underhanded, venal attempt to deny constitutional first amendment rights, and it must not stand

The time has come to stop bowing to the progressives. I, for one will be praying on 9/11. The vast majority of Americans will be praying on 9/11. Most New Yorkers (I was one) will be praying on 9/11. That Michael Bloomberg is not says it all.

When will the people of New York wake up?

So they all worship the same god just after a while started to branch out from each other througout history.

And just for the record, God can prevent evil, but to do so would abrogate our own right to choose and would deny us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. Love implies he does what is best for us, and sometimes that means letting us both learn and suffer the consequences of our actions. We are here to demonstrate what kind of people we are. God acts through us.

This country needs the prayers of the saints now more than ever.

      3 CROSSES, (just my theory)
3 Major religions that mention Jesus represented by a cross on Calvery: Christianity, ( those who accept that Jesus is the Christ, represented by Christ on the Cross) Judaism, ( represented by the thief who accepted Jesus at the time of his crucifixion, (according to biblical prophecy yet to be fullfilled in the end times for Israel) Islam, (represented by the theif on the cross who mocked Christ at the time of his crucifixion, who did not recognize who Jesus was & is {see below}) this is a generalization (not all peoples of a specific group) because we know that anyone at anytime can accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord & Savior, it is a personal choice.

to those of you claiming that Allah is the same as the christian God, you are sadly mistaken.
the arab people trace their roots back Abraham, Isaac & Ishmael, (Esau sold his birthright). the Jews trace their roots back to Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, same for Christians as we are grafted into the vine.

Hagar was egyptian = arabs (islam) worshipped egyptian gods, 3 daughters of allah, al-lat, al-uzza & manat, (2 other male gods?) mohammed comes on the scene 600+ AD and appeases his family in what he percieves as a pagan worship (this led to the satanic verses), he says that allah could not have a son (Jesus) or 3 daughters so over time and through deception (quarysh method) he changed islam 2 monotheism..

Normally I kind of jump in with both feet and start words like stupidity and ignorant. But I’m nor going to do that here. What I am going to do is try to explain what you so clearly don’t know..

allah who was also called sin. It was worshipped by many ancient cultures. it is is a pre-islamic pagan deity worshiped by Arabs long before muhammad raped and sodomized his 9 year old wife. He married her when she was 6. but I digress. allah was one of over 300 idols they worshiped. allah was the Moon-god who was married to the sun goddess and the stars were his daughters. Given the amount of historical archaeological artifacts concerning the worship of this Moon-god, it is clear that this was the dominant religion in Sumeria. The Old Testament constantly rebuked the worship of the Moon-god (see: Deut. 4:19;17:3; II Kngs. 21:3,5; 23:5; Jer. 8:2; 19:13; Zeph. 1:5, etc. More historical archelogical eveidence can be found. http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/False%20Religions/Islamic%20Muslim/moon_god.htm.

Weather you visit this site is completely up to you. Now I can go further in giving conflicts to your post offering evidence in the differences and conflicts when comparing the one true God to this pagan idol but the essence of the discussion lays within the pre-islamic history that muslims so want you not to know. Like abrogation and taqiyya. Anyway like I said educate yourself.

Why are religious people so sensitive? Everyone I know who believes in God believes that he is invisible and does not speak in an audible voice, i.e. he is incapable of addressing a crowd. Sure they believe he’s a real thing and then when they speak to him it has meaning (some even believe he speaks back to them), but the consensus is that prayer is something that happens internally.

So my question is: why not just go to this memorial and if your find yourself overcome by the divine… start praying. Nobody is stopping you. Close your eyes and say 1000 Hail Mary’s.

This obsession with projecting one‘s faith is so hard for me to understand not just because I’m a non-believer now, but because I was raised a Catholic. When I was young I prayed alone, in quiet, on my knees. I didn’t need to have a huge audience, megaphones, television crews, etc. I think we can remember the dead of 9/11 without jumping up and down and screaming “We love God in America!”

Hello New York City. Where are the eight million people who reside on Manhattan Island? Why are you not in the streets screaming at the top of your lungs voicing your indignation for the despicable decision of your mayor, Mayor Bloomberg, to deny the police, firemen, and first responders from being invited to the 9/11 memorial on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Instead you tolerate a token effort to recognize these champions of courage on 9/8/2011. You certainly were in the streets shrieking in horror as the twin towers were coming down, counting on these very heroes to save your lives. Now, you cannot block every street in New York City to protest the shameful denial of their worth and our appreciation. We turned to God in our sorrow, we even saw a fireman Chaplin giving last rights to a dying fireman sacrifice his own life in that very moment. Yet, no offer of prayer at the memorial will be allowed. You all should be so ashamed.

“Either God can prevent evil but chooses not to, which means he is not all-good, or he wishes to prevent evil but cannot, which means he is not all-powerful.” Quite the conundrum eh?
      ———
Quite the false dichotomy: God‘s logic doesn’t match yours, THEREFORE He is flawed/doesn’t really exist. The premise is faulty. It is not “evil,“ it is ”the evil one,” which means a) that the goal was not “to prevent,” but “to defeat” — done by his all-powerful Son at the cross — and b) that the choice to get on the winning team is all-yours, courtesy of a God who respects your freedom to decide whether to spend eternity with Him or not.

Without Him “all-good“ becomes ”all-absent” — absence of love, absence of peace, absence of joy, absence of light, absence of mercy, absence of HOPE, i.e., h*ll for all eternity. So God urges you to choose life. Your mind cannot fathom the things of the spirit, but if you ask the all-powerful God, He will make your dead spirit live, so you can discern spiritual truths. Currently, your puny mind is stuck in false conundrums.

“If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God” (1 Cor. 8:2-3).

It is supposed to be a memorial! If those people don’t want to live by our laws, our way of life then they need to leave. They seem to forget this is OUR country … Time for the people to take back our country and stop this waffling as to be politically correct. It is insane and NO OTHER country in the world would allow it so why would we give up our way of life for them? GET REAL!

Even the Bible clearly states that a Christian CANNOT SIT ON THE FENCE, for he is either FOR ONE OR THE OTHER and cannot be for both (good and evil). DUH to The Blaze for this really DUMB POLL. ANOTHER DUMBER THAN A BOX OF ROCKS – POLL FROM THE ILLUSTRIOUS ‘THEBLAZE’. Why do I torment myself so by continuing to read TheBlaze? I have got to stop!!!!

So, am I to assume that whoever answered that one in that sense IS NOT A TRUE CHRISTIAN, but either an atheist or better yet, a LIBERAL? Then, what are they? I never could understand how a liberal could call themselves a Christian (if there is such a thing as a liberal Christian). It seems like an OXY-MORON to me.

Yes, I give my full support for that statement. This is for all the individuals that suffered due to 9/11, government should have no part in this memorial. It should just be different people of the community comming together, remembering, lifting up and praying for those who suffered. I think the people should kick the government out of the event because they have a record of messing-up everything they touch.

Giuliani said, “the First Amendment to the Constitution prohibits the establishment of religion…” No it doesn’t, the First Amendment prohibits Congress from making any laws that establish religion. Absent any law from Congress that says something like, “A Baptist minister shall deliver a sermon at the memorial site of the Twin Towers on every September 11th,” there is no Constitutional violation. For that matter, if a public school principal were to invite a Christian minister to pray with faculty, staff and children at the beginning of the school year, again, there would be no Constitutional violation. BTW, that happens all of the time down here in Texas and Liberals keep their noses out of our business, because Texans fight back. If on the other hand, Congress passed a law stating something like, “Every public school in America shall begin the first day of each school year with a prayer led by a Presbyterian minister,” then there would be a problem.

People have been repeating the lie that the government can’t establish a religion for so long that most people believe it. If Christians praying in our public squares bothers some people in America, they need to find a different country to live in, because ~90% of Americans identify themselves as Christians, our founding fathers were predominantly Christian, the Constitution was based on Judeo-Christian principles and according to the Supreme Court in 1899, “This [America] is a Christian Nation.”

I’m with you ISGI. This Sunday, Christians in NYC should meet at the hole where the Twin Towers used to stand, join hands, encircle the Ground Zero site and pray while Bloomberg has his little atheist fest. As a matter of fact, if churches in NYC are not organizing such an event, NYC church leaders should be ashamed of themselves. After all, if thugs in Philadelphia can organize flash mobs on a moment’s notice, why can’t Christians organize a prayer “mob” using the same technology? Christians in America need to step it up and start fighting back by organizing prayer rallies at events where bureaucrats have tried to silence them. Jesus wasn’t weak, he was meek (i.e., strong but self-controlled) and Christians need to learn the difference.

As much as I would normally agree with you GODLOVINMOM, and I do, if Christians do NOT stand up now vocally and physically, there will come a time when you will have to take a stand anyways and be put to death for it. To me, Heaven is a far better place to be anyways, so death does not scare me. However, I always ask myself, “What is the worst thing that can happen, if I………” then, respectfully, I decide. Most of the time, I do it. I remember one time that a teacher told my daughter that she could not have a cross drawn on her book cover. She had to remove it. I paid $50 to have an attorney send her a letter stating my daughter’s right to have that book cover, since the school didn’t provide them, the teacher had no right to forbid anything. The teacher took it to the Principal, which reminded me of Bloomberg and when I went in to talk to him (I am 6′3″ and he was 5′7 I think), I just looked DOWN at him and told HIM my daughter’s rights. I came PREPARED with the law AND HE BACKED DOWN. My daughter put crosses on all her books. Most teachers didn’t care, but that one almost failed my daughter until I began asking for her assignments so I could oversee them. Finally, by January of that year, the teacher was gone and a new one replaced her – a nicer one. My daughter graduated as the Valedictorian and she PRAYED over the class as the graduation – out loud. NO ONE COMPLAINED. NO ONE PROTESTED.
