Should Romney Have Called Out a Town Hall Participant for Saying Obama Should Be ‘Tried for Treason’?

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has already had some awkward moments unfold on the campaign trail. On Monday, yet another intriguing incident befell the prospective GOP nominee during a town hall event in Cleveland, Ohio. During a question and answer period, an audience member openly proclaimed that President Barack Obama should be tried for treason.

Romney, of course, played it safe and remained quiet during the interaction. He did proclaim, though, in a subsequent CNN interview, that he did not agree with the questioner’s insinuation that the president be brought up on such charges. The questioner’s statement, which was mainly centered upon Constitutional powers and Obama’s alleged abuses, certainly put Romney in an odd position.

Romney Ignores Womans Claim: Obama Should Be Charged With Treason

“We have a president right now that is operating outside the structure of our Constitution,” the audience member proclaimed. “And I want to know — yeah, I do agree he should be tried for treason — but I want to know what you would be able to do to restore balance between the three branches of government and what you are going to be able to do to restore our Constitution in this country.”

The presidential candidate responded very carefully to the question as well as the embedded treason proclamation.

“Well, as I’m sure you do, I happen to believe the Constitution was not just brilliant but probably inspired. I happen to believe the same thing about the Declaration of Independence,” Romney replied. “I would respect the different branches of government if I am fortunate enough to become president.”

Romney went on to say that he would utilize executive orders just as Obama has. In fact, he said he would grant an order that would provide a waiver for Obama’s health care law in all 50 states. While Romney didn’t address the treason charge during the town hall, his answer was clearly crafted to avoid the subject.

Here’s his response to a CNN reporter about the incident:

Some criticized Romney for not correcting the woman during the interaction, although the candidate was clear in his subsequent interview that he does not agree with such a proposal. The Obama campaign, of course, is using the incident as an opportunity to peg Romney as a weak leader.

“Today we saw Mitt Romney’s version of leadership: standing by silently as his chief surrogate attacked the president’s family at the event and another supporter alleged that the president should be tried for treason,” proclaimed Lis Smith, a spokeswoman for Obama re-election campaign. “Time after time in this campaign, Mitt Romney has had the opportunity to show that he has the fortitude to stand up to hateful and over-the-line rhetoric and time after time, he has failed to do so.”

    The congress should have begun impeaching Obama months ago. He has exceeded his constitutional limits in too many cases. His co-conspiritors in the doj, the epa and the dept. of state, to name only a few, have aided and abeited his executive branch power grab. The congress has let down the people by not punishing the executive branch immediately for the gross over stepping policies. The people will speak by congressional restructuring soon.

      He should never been allowed to run in the first place..I find it appalling that we can even have senators and congressmen from other countries..or any foreigner in places of our government…Saying we should try him for treason, to my way of thinking is an oxymoron because he is not a citizen of this country..and his heart is not American..he is Islamic..and has done nothing but convert this nation to Islam..Did he not tell the leaders in the Arab countries “America could now be called the greatest Islamic country in world?” To try someone for treason..the person would have had to have been from that country and to have been a traitor to that country. He has not.. It’s just that we as Americans have supported Clinton initiated community organizations such as the liberal Acorn and subsidiaries..Remember..Clinton dodged the draft and went to Russia where he received his Communist training..but I suspect that Americans either don‘t know what Communism is or don’t care..I believe it has gone too far to ever get turned around..The President of World Ministries..a former sniper for the FBI and CIA said that he didn’t know if it could be,,but our only hope would be to elect a Constitutionalist for President..their is a grass roots movement to do that..but the Rothchild (Federal Reserve) owned media are still leading the public around by the nose.Last election I understand a Arab bought into FAUX

      A simply reply to this woman’s question should have been…..If it can be proved that any American is found guilty of treason (by definition) in a court of law…..then I believe that person should be prosecuted to the FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. And I would stand by that judgement regardless if it were the president, or a judge, or a congressman, or a janitor, or a bus driver. I would stand against treasonous activity from ANY AMERICAN CITIZEN!” This is the answer people are looking for Mr. Romney. EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER THE LAW !!!!

      Michelle Bachmann had a titanium spine, and she would not have minced words. Sara Palin does not even let Chris Christie bully her when she has the pulpit. Allen West would have said exactly his mind.

      Mitt just tries to pretend the statement was never said. (Like Michael Steele used to do.) It would make Mitt a better candidate if he would assert his feelings one way or another. OH WELL!

      This Romney coverage is pointless. He will not be the Nominee. Ron Paul is taking all his presumed delegates and he will not get the needed 1144 and then its over for him. The Paul delegates have no desire or need to play nice, this is simply business. Hate to burst the Romney bubble but their is no support behind him let alone any excitement. He has money but that doesn’t win actual delegates that are sick and tired of socialist liberal democrats and socialist neocon republicans. We want our constitution back and Ron Paul is the only game in town.

    Some say Romney didn’t take the bate but he could have certainly given a better answer to the statement. The US voters are so stupid. Voted in obozo who openly is destroying this country.       Questions in politics today always starts with a filibustering statement that is typically incoherent, wanders around like a drunkard at an open bar and almost always filled with half truths, innuendo and out & out lies. Mitt Romney would never be able to get to the issue at hand if he spent the time necessary to set the issues straight. On the other hand BHO the setup portion of the filibustered question is ignored because he agrees with what is said even if he never thought of it before. In the case of Romney, the setup to the question is in an attempt to make him look ridiculous where as with BHO the setup is a futile attempt to make him look rational, intelligent and mainstream.

    Treason= Betrayal or breach of allegiance or of obediance toward one’s sovereign or government.

    There is no doubt in my mind that obama should in fact, be charged and tried for treason. The contempt of a court order and the contempt toward the constitutional authority of the judicial branch of government gets him convicted in my view.
    He is a Leninist, Marxist, communist dedicated to the destruction of capitalism.

    If one looks at the sum total of Obama’s actions, it might be difficult to charge “treason,” but ignoring his oath of office and facilitating corruption are absolutely what he’s done. Ad lib commentary may not always express what the speaker intended, but directionally that comment was right on target (oops).

      His answer is what is bothering me about politics today… Stating he will do the same thing is scary.. If people think there is a divide between parties now, give it 4 more years of either one of these guys use of executive powers and watch the divide get even bigger… We seem to be headed towards what the president thinks is best… When will this stop and how far are they going to go?.. Will it be every 4 years our president will change how we live our lives? One side saying it’s the other sides fault, while we sit here watching them do nothing and take our tax dollars home.. They have more vacation time than any job I know of, head back to work, do nothing and go on another vacation.. Telling me every 4 months congress will be broke unless they pass another round of money to keep congress rolling, than go on vacation the day after the money gets there.. Most of these politicians have become crooks in one form or another and should be fired.. Tell me to pay more while they pay nothing for years… This Holder idiot telling Roger Clemens how serious he takes lying to congress and needs to be tried, at the same time he is lying to congress… Sending billions of our dollars across seas, at the same time complaining about our 1%ers sending their money across seas… All of it makes me sick.

      But if all he does is rely on executive power, how is the law going to be made so the next President doesn’t override the executive order and force states to comply? If he does that then he is just as bad as our current usurper in chief and will lead us down the same path but at a slower pace…I don’t think that is freedom, liberty or in the interests of pursuing happiness, it’s just a chain of a different color.

      The constitution gives us three branches of government. The reason for three seperate but equal branches was to give balance to our rulers and not have one override the other. Sweet Old Barack has defied c ongress by using his executive order to over rule laws passed by congress and his threats to the SCOTUS. Both of the actions are clear violations of the constitution and the powers given to the executive branch. Ergo – impeachable offenses and probable criminal actions that could/should result in prison time.
      Personally I woulld like to see him spend a few years in super max so far in that he couldn’t see sunshine.

      As president, Romney cannot repeal Obamacare. He can only sign a law passed by Congress to repeal it. Using executive orders, stumping for Congress to get their act together, and heckling the Democrats is about the extent of his presidential powers against a law already passed by Congress and signed by a prior president. Coincidentally, this is also what Obama has done (from the other side of the aisle, of course). It says as much in the article:

      Yes, he should. BUT, the repeal process will take time and cooperation within the houses of congress. The Ex order will give the states the right to reject it immediately.

Representing the World Wrestling Federation, Santorum argued that professional wrestling should be exempt from federal steroid regulations because it was not an actual sport, rather, entertainment. OR maybe Bachmann she was a Lawyer for the IRS. While those 2 were supporting and voting for bills like the Patriot Act. Dr. Ron Paul has been busy defending The Constitution, your Freedoms and Liberties against bills like the Patriot Act and The National Defense Act .The Dr. also wrote or sponsored 620 bills.       Alright, I’m listening. How can someone who supports the Patriot Act, NDAA, individual mandate, bailouts, CISPA, HR347, Drones spying on American citizens, etc… also respect the Constitution? I mean you are all good at calling me names, wishing I’d take my own life, saying I’m crazy, etc. but you never address the actual issue. Make a case for men to take away my god-given rights, or get off my back.

What happened to repealing Obamacare? And now I hear he may be considering the RINO Christie for VEEP? We’re in trouble.

      I don’t think he will pick Christie. Christie would upstage him too much. If Rubio’s birth certificate is good, I think he’ll get the nod, if not, Portman.

    The woman voiced her opinion in the form of a statement, not a question. Romney answered the question. I don’t get the “time after time” part. BHO has never corrected or policed the speech of any of his supporters or other dems.

    ummmm….McCain told a woman who called obama an Arab that he was not an Arab….America swore in a potus who is not qualified under the U. S. constitution…under obama we owe $15 + trillion in debt….this is the man who divides America by race…by wealth…by gender….why worry about such a silly thing as ‘treason’ and Freedom of Speech ?

    Is this a joke? TRY HIM FOR TREASON. Try him for failure to uphold the constitution of the US which he has sworn to uphold and has willfully ignored. How about try him and the DOJ for arming the drug cartels in Mexico. Try him for socializing banking, automaking and healthcare. The list is endless.

    If he was in an awkward situation, “Here’s your sign”, Conservatives. romeny is NOT one of us, no matter what he says to get elected.

    The only awkward thing is that the treasonous so b hasn’t been brought up on those charges before now. No one currently “serving” in Congress should be re-elected in November (if we get to vote and to have elections).

      I agree. I don’t like Romney. I don’t think he will be much better than Obama. The Elites in the Republican party want Romney too much. I think I will be voting for someone else. We can’t let
      the moneyed people tell us who our candidate should be. Its up to We the People to decide. I will not
      sit this election out. That would be a disaster. I know others who are talking about not voting. This is not good for our country.

      Although Rubio was born in the states in 1971 his parents did not become U.S. citizens until 1975. Thus, although he is an American citizen this does not make him Natural Born Citizen (both parents must be US citizens at time fo birth). Same argurment as the usurper in office whose ‘alleged’ father was a British subject. Also as I have closely watching Rubio he is showing himself to be quite the RINO. A true dissapointment.
