Showdown: Reid Says ‘Permanent’ Tax Cuts ‘Won’t Happen’

Democrats may have lost control of the House of Representatives to the Republicans in Tuesday’s elections, but the six seats the GOP gained in the Senate weren’t enough to take full control of Congress and avoid compromise on key issues such as the Bush tax cuts.

After a conference call with his Democratic colleagues Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D,-Nev., explained that Democrats “are focused like a laser” on tax cuts “for the middle class,” and said he hoped Republicans would not block these plans.

But even before Tuesday’s decisive election results, Republicans expressed unwillingness to compromise on anything short of extending tax cuts for all Americans and have introduced legislation to make them permanent, explaining that a recession is no time to raise taxes.

While Reid may be open to a compromise on who receives the tax cuts, he seems resolved against making the cuts permanent. “We are not ostriches with our head in the sand someplace. We’re willing to pull our head out and look around if they have some better ideas. But I think that the legislation introduced by my counterpart, Mitch McConnell, where you extend everything indefinitely, that’s a road to a $4 trillion addition to the debt that we have, and that won’t happen,” Reid said.

The Congress must come to a compromise before the tax cuts expire completely on Dec. 31.  But three new members joining the Senate have all expressed their support for making the cuts permanent — a potential political roadblock for Reid.

“Nothing has been decided. The only thing that everyone agrees on is to extend the tax cuts for the middle class. What, if anything else, will be done will be subject to negotiations with the Republicans,” a senior Senate Democratic aide told Fox News.  Though the tax cut debate is “likely” during the lame-duck session, “next steps must still be discussed.”

During his post-election press conference Wednesday, President Obama said he plans to meet with Congressional leaders from both parties “some time in the next few weeks and see where we can move forward.”

In the ten years we’ve had these tax cuts for the rich, it hasn’t helped anyone but the rich. Rich people don’t make jobs out of their PERSONAL income. That’s the money they’ve taken out of their businesses when they’re making a profit. The whole reason all businesses are corporations, is so the money you get out of it when it’s making a profit won’t get sucked back in if it fails. I don’t understand why people fall for this threat that they’ll stop making new jobs if taxes go up – they never started making them after they went down, or if they did, they were mostly jobs in other countries!

Further, with the corporate taxes in the US(the highest in the world now and set to go higher still if Dreamworks has his way) force corporations to seek out less expensive labor markets. Some go overseas while others go to right to work states. Many of the corporations also have investors and the investors put their money in hoping to make more money on profits. In the free market system, the investors won’t put their money in or keep it in, if they are not making a profit. Only the govt pours self-printed money into companies that consistently lose money, yet does nothing to turn a profit. A few recent examples: 1. When GM became Government Motors, who profited? Only the unions, the investors who had provided the capital got nothing, just pretty pieces of paper that I suppose you could use as wallpaper or frame. 2. Olin Corp in Illinois wanted concessions from the union regarding wages and vacations. Twice the union voted it down. Olin(being a private company) is responsible to its investors so they are relocating their operations to right-to-work Mississippi and taking 900 jobs with it. 3. Once again those on SS or SSI will not be getting any sort of COLA increase, because there is, according to the Washocrats, no inflation. What they did not tell anyone is that they changed the way they calculated inflation! Under the new (pro-govt) formula, inflation is only 1%; under the old(pro-consumer)formula, it is 11%. Anyone(outside of DC) who does their own shopping has certainly noticed the increase and it is not just pennies. For General Mills has announced a major price increase on Novemer 15th. They have not specified how much, but to come out and announce it, time to stock up on cereal NOW. Question for the Washocrats, didn’t you all get a 5% salary increase each of the past two years?

the rich spend that personal income. example: clinton’s 5 million dollar wedding. that took many workers to service that event and that money earned went directly into the people’s pocket. if that same money detours to the government that doesn’t mean you will benefit from it. yes the wedding was lavish so, they have it and they put more people to work because of it. i think when the rich spend lavishly you will see more small business to service that goofy lifestyle. we keep that part of the economy open then more of us will have the chance to profit from it.

Drbage – Your statement that we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world is flat out untrue. Japan at 40% has the highest by far. Many countries including Australia, France, Italy, India, Belgum, Brazil, Colombia, Pakistan and Thailiand have rates of 30% or higher, more than our federal plus the highest state tax in the country, and about double the federal plus the lowest state rate (whioch is zero).

“When GM became Government Motors, who profited? Only the unions, the investors who had provided the capital got nothing, just pretty pieces of paper”

Also not true, the main beneficiaries are the workers that those unions represent, thousands of whom would now be out of a job and depending on pulic asssistancxe if the company had been allowed to go bankrupt. The investors are better off too. Apparently you haven’t heard that contrary to your cherished belief that the government can never do anything right, GM is now making a profit, so those “pretty pieces of paper” are worth more than they would have gotten in a liquidation.

I agree that they should not extend the tax cuts for the top two percent! Small business owners don’t like THEIR MONEY! They would gladly give what would be money they can re-invest and hire people with OVER TO the welfare state! AND WHY NOT? We need all the money we can get from them because after all we need a LOT to be able to put them out of business and socialize their respective industries in the future!

California you once were a beautiful state but you have become poor and needy and do not realize it? I don’t think Jerry Brown has a clue how to get us out of this mess. 13th Generation, the only fair tax is one that is paid by (drum roll)…..Everyone. No singling one group out over another. The progressive income tax needs to be abolished and a flat tax established. One with everyone paying the SAME percentage regardless of income. Then you will have everyone contributing, unlike today, and everyone with skin in the game. Based on studies I have seen the government will also see more income from it too. Think of it. No more tax returns to file. No need to hire an accountant to prepare your taxes and figure out how to get as many of your hard earned dollars back. Most importantly, no more demonizing the wealthy, the people who own the businesses where most Americans work…now THAT is FAIR.

We need to think outside the box and consider a flat tax or consumption tax that will tax every person (including the 11m illegals) based on their daily purchases. If you have to think about fairness…thats as fair as it gets.

No Harry does not look like a molester. He looks like the end result of being held captive during his formative years by a molester . Thats why he is trying to screw the rest of us!

A tax cut can’t add to the debt. It is like a thief saying that not doing the heist will prevent me from paying my bills. Lunacy

Perhaps if all of you are done with the ad-hominem attacks and name calling you could answer a couple of questions.

      1. How does the personal income of corporate CEO’s effect whether or not that company can hire or fire employees?

      2. If keeping the tax cuts for the rich will add $700 BILLION (over ten years) to the national debt and taxing the rich will mean an income of $700 BILLION (over ten years) how do you justify keeping them and touting “fiscal responsibility” at the same time?

If anyone can answer these questions I would greatly appreciate it because I have yet to find a calculator that makes the numbers jive. How about yours?
