Shut Out: White House Punishes Boston Herald for Paper’s Romney Coverage

If you’re a news source, and the White House doesn‘t like what you’re putting on your front page, watch out.
The Boston Herald has just released e-mails between the outlet and White House spokesman Matt Lehrich, in which Lehrich explains why the administration has decided to deny full access to one of the Herald’s reporters. Why? Lehrich questions if the Herald is “unbiased.” Why exactly? Because he objected to an op-ed by Mitt Romney being placed on the paper’s front page in March, and news of a presidential visit not getting the same treatment.
From the Herald:
The White House Press Office has refused to give the Boston Herald full access to President Obama’s Boston fund-raiser today, in e-mails objecting to the newspaper’s front page placement of a Mitt Romney op-ed, saying pool reporters are chosen based on whether they cover the news “fairly.”
“I tend to consider the degree to which papers have demonstrated to covering the White House regularly and fairly in determining local pool reporters,” White House spokesman Matt Lehrich wrote in response to a Herald request for full access to the presidential visit.
“My point about the op-ed was not that you ran it but that it was the full front page, which excluded any coverage of the visit of a sitting US President to Boston. I think that raises a fair question about whether the paper is unbiased in its coverage of the President’s visits,” Lehrich wrote.
Lehrich added that pool duty had already been granted to a reporter from the Boston Globe, but that didn’t stop him from making his comments.
Still, he did leave the door open for future assignments. “As we have in the past — including the multiple occasions on which the Herald has supplied local pool reporters — we will continue to consider the Herald for local pool duty for future visits,” Lehrich wrote.
“Newspapers don’t have to be unbiased to get access.” Boston University journalism professor Fred Bayles told the Herald. “You can’t just let only the newspapers you want in.”
You can read the White House’s history of journalism wars from the Herald.

Posted on May 18, 2011 at 10:17amTranslation: Only news media that is pro-Obama will be allowed to cover him. Imagine the uproar that would be coming from the main stream media if Bush had done something like this? Providing unbiased news is not important to the mainstream press, what is important is influencing the public in the “correct” direction. Political view is more important then the news. Every time I see a show with a group of journalists sitting around pompously and arrogantly proclaiming themselves the sacred holders of the truth in the United States I want to gag. They believe that only they can understand what is really going on in the country and only they can they explain it to the ignorant and unintelligent masses. Most of them are nothing but political whores.

If the Bush administration had done as you suggested, they wouldn’t have gotten ANY coverage. Fox was at best neutral. The reason all the other media‘s losing viewership is something they can’t admit. That their biased coverage has so turned people off that they would rather do without. Let me be clear on this though… I don’t want Fox to be a cheerleader for our side either. I want the facts.. no spin. I don;t like the big “O” saying he has the no spin zone. The guests he has on DO spin, its just he usually has a dissenting opinion to cancel out. Shep‘ has a ’No Spin Show” but that makes it kinda dry for most peoples taste.

Posted on May 18, 2011 at 11:02am13th you have it backwards. Just for clarification 53% do pay taxes, 47% do not. Still a extremely high percentage of people. I think that if you are a wage earner, no matter how little you make you should have to pay something, no matter how small, in Federal Taxes. That way everyone would have a “stake in the game” so to speak. Maybe then more people would be concerned about government spending. In addition do away with “earned income” tax returns. Come tax time no one should get money from the government when they have paid nothing in Federal Income taxes.

Getting to my point – the PRESS room – was the White House’s original indoor swimming pool – famous for JFK and Marilyn Monroe’s very friendly swims – during the Nixon term, Nixon built over the pool and gave it to the press as a gesture of goodwill. The press was no fan of Nixon and never was. While there, I felt the presence of evil and got some evil stares by some of the “glitter” throwing press – my long winded point – there is still a heap of screwing taking place in that room and it is Liberal Press doing the American Public!
