‘Shut Up and Sit Down!’: Fed-Up Teacher Gives Rousing Speech to Stop Classroom Brawl

We’re not sure where or when this happened, but we do know that it has us captivated.
The video below shows two students (who appear to be in a high school classroom) escalate a conversation into a standoff. As they get out of their seats, they stand and face each other, just moments away from what appears to be an all-out brawl. The tension is high. And that’s when the teacher steps in with a rousing, firm, and passionate speech:
“You boys are pissing me off! Hey! Hey! … Both of y’all, listen. Quit sellin’ out of my house, Anthony. [Turning to the other student he says] Shut up and sit down, before I make change out of you and you! If you don’t take that mess over there right now — right now! It‘s not like you’re going to push through me to get to him. You ain’t! So take it over there if you can’t squash it like gentlemen and get out of his face — and get out of mine, get over there. Take it, Anthony.
“Now, if you can’t squash it, do that off campus. Y‘all don’t do that in here. Whoever made you believe you could, we could squash this right now. … Anybody else? Trust me, we could take it to the grass. Trust me. It’s been that type of Tuesday. You’re too young, your life is too short for y‘all to be sellin’ out with that kind of nonsense. This ain’t no Crips, Bloods kind of nonsense. … You can’t talk it out, then get out. “
Wow. You can watch it all unfold below:
If you have any information about the video, feel free to let us know.

Then there is nothing he could have done, at least none of the other classmates would inadvertently get involved. A teacher’s job is to keep the classroom safe, it’s the job of the police to keep the streets safe.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 12:45pmI guarantee the teacher will be diciplined. The parents of the kids will complain to the school board, call in JJ, and try to make it out like the teacher did something wrong. And the school will give in to the extortion. It happens every time any teacher stands up and puts students in their place that are out of hand.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 2:06pmSMITHCLAR3NC3- YOU’RE RIGHT! We should just let them kill each other IN school so they don’t have to kill each other OUT of school!
Stop believing you can sweet talk problems away and this society will be all love and acceptance. Time to take the school back for those who are there to learn. I’d love to save these fatherless gang bangers. But we‘ve been selling out the good kids for the sake of the hoodlums for decades and it doesn’t work! Let’s go back to asserting a bit of authority in the classroom and stop worrying about those who will walk out and get killed a drive-by. That’s the way to do the most good, because you can;t save those who don’t want to be saved!
How many of your parents died from a spanking? How many of our kids have thrown their lives away because they were never disciplined? Nuff said.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 2:36pmI opted not to watch the video because the transcript says all I need to know. He really has to talk to them on their level unfortunately but he should not have to. I can’t remember any of my teachers dropping down like this and actually makes threats on us. They called us to the front of the class, asked us to bend over and grab our ankles and wailed away with a yard stick or a wooden paddle made for the purpose. Some parents complained that doing this in front of the class was embarrassing, so they compromised and took the student out of class and into the hallway to administer the rights of passage. Then they compromised again saying maybe only the VP of the school should administer the punishment to make it even handed and fair as some teachers were either too soft on their swings and others to hard. Depending on what teacher you had determined the severity, so this was deemed not fair play either. So the schools said the heck with it, you discipline them at home like your supposed to do. Then the State said you can’t spank your kids. Now this should bring us full circle to this teacher.

It reminds me of my High School days some 50 years ago. teachers didn’t take any bull s_ _ t, male or female, they stood their ground and demanded respect. Teachers shouldn’t leave any doubt about WHO is in charge in the classroom.
Good for you teacher, you‘re what it’s about today, get envolved, the “buck stops here” kinda way. We need more teachers today in America like you. If it had been my son envolved in the incident I would hope that you would have handled him just like you did.

He’s not going there to get an education in the first place, and he keeps those who are there for an education from getting one. Throw him and those like him out. Why do we put up with losers like this? Oh yeah, … the more students the school has on the rolls … the more taxpayers money the school is given. That’s also why so many kids are designated as need some level of “Special” Educatioin. There’s even more money poured into the school because of that designation. It’s all about your money … it is not about the kids or education. If it were, teachers would actually have to able to teach.

I therefore declare war on political correctness. My wife who is a more successful teacher in the sense of being a survivor thinks I am wrong while I maintain sometimes direct strong language such as the above is a very logical form of something we used to call fifty hears ago “communication”!

He wasnt afraid to get in your face when you deserved it and needed it. He was the most respected, liked, and “feared” teacher in that school and he was also the best teacher in that school who actually taught and didnt use the class as a political soap box like so many of them today. But that was back in the 70s. The more things change the more some things should have stayed the same.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 12:53pmIt has more to do with lawsuits than it does with backbone. In almost all of these cases the enabling parents will file a lawsuits against the school district and the teacher claiming that the teacher and by proxy the school were guilty of some abuse. If it involves a black student then JJ and his three ringed circus is almost guaranteed to make an appearance. The school boards usually simply give in to the pressure and agree to dicipline the teacher. The only losers in these situations are always the teachers.
Report Post »Doug - AF6YC
Posted on September 30, 2011 at 3:53pmTRADEXPERTBUYSELL — I agree. Political correctness has totally run amok and, as a result, is rapidly tearing down our country.
I recall when I was in the 2nd grade reports/rumors that the principal had a fraternity type paddle hidden away somewhere in the old, three story brick school that I was attending that year. I never actually saw the aforementioned paddle, nor did I hear of its actually being used on anyone. It was said that if the boy (girls never got into the kind of trouble that would warrant a paddling) upon whom the paddle was scheduled to be used could find it before the principal, he would escape the paddling. I never quite figured out how that was supposed to work, as the principal had hidden the paddle in the first place, but hey, it was second grade.
Later, in a 7th grade civics class, the teacher actually did pick a fellow up by his belt and collar and throw him out in the hall when he got totally out of hand. (This was the same teacher, a rather short, skinny fellow, who would demonstrate 1-armed pushups during breaks.) I think he did get talked to about this action; as in, “don’t ever do that again;” but definitely didn’t get fired.
Do we, perhaps, need to get back to the philosophy that a good whack on the butt may actually be relatively effective in taming the “savage beasts?” Whatever we‘re doing now sure doesn’t seem to be working.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 9:53amSadly, you are probably right. As a former teacher, it wasn’t the kids (although they will push you as far as they think they can) who made me decide to stop teaching, it was the OTHER TEACHERS who almost uniformly treated the kids badly (and these were kindergarteners and first graders) with degrading speech, as opposed to solid guidance with direct language like this brave man did. They know you care about them, if not in the immediate instance, then years later. I have had children come up to me and hug me where I had even just filled in as a SUBSTITUTE teacher, because they could tell I genuinely enjoyed teaching and watching them grasp new concepts and treated them with the respect all people deserve until you prove to me otherwise. If you lose my respect through behavior, I’ll tell you about it, and why. I believe in teaching children HOW to THINK and choose the best OPTION for behavior, not just to tow the line like drones. I had a principal tell me they just need to say “how high?“ when I say ”jump.” I won’t be standing by them all of their lives, but I sure can teach them actions and consequences and I believe that’s way more important.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 8:54amI hope the teacher didn‘t hurt anyone’s feelings. This teacher might need “sensitivity” training. A course in English couldn’t hurt.
