‘Simplistic Politics’: Kerry Spins Previous Comments and Shifts Attacks to Politicians

Appearing on “Imus in the Morning” Thursday on the Fox Business Network, John Kerry tried to brush aside his previous statement that voters don‘t pay much attention to what’s going on and are easily swayed by a “simple slogan.” Instead, he decried politicians and the overall political process and said voters can’t help but be upset and uninterested.
After Imus asked Kerry if his previous comments were a good idea, Kerry didn’t back down: “That’s what I just said. The politics and the money chase have reduced this thing–I don’t blame people for not paying attention.”
“They don‘t think we’re dealing with the real problems. And I think they’re tired of the consultants and the money and everything reducing their lives to these very simplistic, non-factually based, sloganeering campaigns,” he said.
“I think it’s an accurate thing,” he added, “they are turned off to the process.”
Last week, Kerry told the Boston Herald that, “We have an electorate that doesn’t always pay that much attention to what’s going on so people are influenced by a simple slogan rather than the facts or the truth or what’s happening.”
He shrugged off those comments as newspaper spin and added that if there is anyone to blame for an uninterested electorate it is “the political system itself and the people in it like myself and others who haven’t succeeded in changing that.”
He then shifted toward talking about a failed energy bill, and blamed a “simplistic approach of the political process,” suggesting that the idea failed because Republicans demonized it and people bought into the idea.

Might seem off topic but this hair of Imus is more interesting than John Kerry. I know what Kerry will say, he does not need to speak. Kerry has been using the same sissy boy left liberal punch lines all of his career, while speaking from both sides of his mouth.

Posted on September 30, 2010 at 1:26pmI agree with John Kerry, and you, MARCJACOBS.
It’s way too unfortunate that people are swayed by simple slogans, catchy phrases, sound bites, and easy to understand little factoids that don’t encompass the full complexity of any issue.
However, I think it works on both sides. So, yes, Obama ran on “Hope” and “Change,” and that might have worked for him. I think it would have been better if had run on the merits of Keynesian economics instead, but that would have been far too intellectual of conversation to have on our mainstream media outlets, whether they be Fox News, MSNBC, or CNN. This is because the mainstream media runs on sensationalism, easy-to-understand snippets of information, and forcing the guest to boil down their entire stance on an issue in “thirty seconds or less.” It’s called “concision” in the media, and the United States is quite unique in pushing the concept of “concision.” I don’t know why exactly, but maybe in generates ratings.
Same thing goes for libertarians, Republicans, and conservatives, though. It would be nice to see a conservative actually run on the merits of his Chicago School of economics Milton-Friedman-inspired Reagan-be-praised “supply side” and “free-market” economics neoliberal platform. However, this would also to be too intellectual for the media to tolerate. It’s not that the American people are dumb. It’s that the American people have been conditioned to be intellectually lazy sometimes, and it’s also that media institutions DO NOT EXPECT ANYONE to have critical thinking capabilites. I remember every time a Republican saying you don‘t want government involved in the health care industry because they can’t even run the DMV right. Well, every time I heard that, I wanted to shout that was a highly inaccurate comparison. In fact, conservatives are MUCH better at over simplification than liberals: “lower taxes, cut spending, smaller government, and strong national defense.” There’s the WHOLE PLATFORM boiled down to a simple, easy to remember phrase. However, nobody ever calls the conservatives ou on the fact that the “strong national defense” part of that equation necessarily NEGATES the “small government portion.”

Report Post »What ARE the merits of Keynesian economics? I’m just one of those dumb conservatives that is not intellectually capable of understanding the Socialist/Progressive/Marxist ideals that our current President is attempting to govern under, but I cannot think of one single place in the world that has made Keynes’ ideas lead to anything other than economic collapse… see Europe this week. So as our government continues to impose 80 thousand pages of laws and regulations per year and the Treasury’s printing presses run 24/7 why is it that our economic outlook is bleaker than ever? This is what Keynes and Marx wanted! All of these Progressive geniuses have been shoving us in that direction for the last century and this is what we’ve got to show for it… no thanks. I’ll stick with our constitution as written (not as “interpreted” by progressive judges) and I’ll keep my freedom and small government and you can move to France…

However, nobody ever calls the conservatives ou on the fact that the “strong national defense” part of that equation necessarily NEGATES the “small government portion.”
having a strong national defense does not in fact “NEGATE” the small(er) government position held by conservatives. get the government out of the bedroom, get the government out of the kitchen, get the government out of our churches (recent pleas from pelosi, obama, and other progressives to tout the wonders of healthcare “reform” from the pulpit) get the government out of my business, out of my wallet, get the government and progressive indoctrination out of our schools–limit government to those areas endorsed by the constitution (national defense for instance) and we will, by comparison, have a small or smaller government.
Report Post »Fort Mill Joe
Posted on September 30, 2010 at 3:07pmUmmm… ProgressivesLoveAmerica… conservatives want a smaller government. That is, less bureaucracy and fewer hands in the pie. that lowers costs. A strong National Defense does not require a larger, or even large, government. It requires a larger standing army (AF/Mar/Navy), but not a larger government.
But you are a progressive, so I can’t blame you for not being able to make the distinction.

Posted on September 30, 2010 at 11:38pmMarc, I agree with you–with a caveat. In the politics of yesterday, Kerry would be right. In todays political theater, it’s not as true. And that‘s to the conservative’s advantage. As long as the dems keep playing on the old field, they won’t see the opponents moving to a new(er) field. Meaning, if they think that playing their old worn out games of race bating and class warfare will keep them in office, they (and many many RINO’s) will have a rude awakening. We The People are on to their same ol’ game, and we ain’t gonna play dat no mo
