‘Sin Boldly!’: Female Minister Accused of ‘Seducing’ Congregant & Engaging in Naked Skype Trysts on Church Computers

Rev. Ginger Strickland Accused of Sexual Misconduct With Erik Campano

Rev. Ginger Strickland

The Rev. Ginger Strickland, 33, of Church of the Incarnation in New York City, is under fire amid a complaint that she seduced a male parishioner. Erik Campano, the 34-year-old at the center of the controversy, claims that the two carried on a secret affair, which purportedly included hook-ups in a rectory in Paris, France, and naked Skype video chats over church computers.

While the romance was apparently intense, it inevitably ended with Stickland dumping Campano — an act that he claims had a dire impact on him. The New York Post has more about how the alleged affair began:

Strickland, from a Texas oil baron’s family, and Campano, from Queens, met in late 2010 at the American Church in Paris, where she held a job leading a youth ministry. He was going to medical school, attended services, and — at Strickland’s urging, he said — became a church volunteer.

Over several months, Campano says, Strickland first engaged him in e-mail discussions dripping with pastoral concern and advice for coping with his studies and his mother’s cancer. He says he resisted her invitations to socialize.

Finally, alone in a gym after an outing with a jogging club, she leaned over to kiss him, the start of a four-month affair.

In a complaint document that the Post obtained, Campano wrote to church officials, detailing these activities (and plenty of others), claiming that Stickland told him, “God brought you to me.”

“On her initiation, we are naked…over church computers,” he continued, highlighting the alleged Skype “dates” that the two held. If true, this description — especially the idea that the actions were carried out over church computers — will likely cause problems for the young preacher.

Strickland moved to the U.S. last summer to take a job at the Church of Incarnation. Initially, the two continued their romance via Skype, but Campano claims that the pastor asked for “space” in November and then ended the relationship one month later. He also claims that the preacher told him that further contact would complicate her ministry.

The breakup was apparently very hard for Campano, as he said that he considered suicide in the wake of it. Now, he’s fighting back, claiming that the church should have protected him against the relationship. So, he filed a report and accused Strickland — just weeks before her ordination – of sexual misconduct, hiding her wrongdoing and acting out in an un-clergy-like manner.

“I felt betrayed by my church, which was supposed to enforce rules against pastors having relationships with parishioners,” he said in an interview with the Post. “If you believe your relationship is blessed by God, a breakup means a failure to live out God’s will.”

Rev. Ginger Strickland Accused of Sexual Misconduct With Erik Campano

There’s no telling how much of the story is true, but Campano claims to have e-mails and handwritten notes that detail their sexual exploits, while also highlighting Strickland’s criticism about a seminary course she took about — ironically — sexual harassment. He also claims that she joked about “theological justification” for the affair.

“God does not save those who are only imaginary sinners. Sin boldly!,” she allegedly said. “Be a sinner and let your sins be strong, but let your trust in Christ be stronger.”

So far, the church hasn’t taken disciplinary action against Strickland. The case was, at first, dismissed. Then, Campano won an appeal and an Episcopal panel is now examining it further.

Not sure if people are realizing that the quote “Sin boldly!” is from Martin Luther, founder of Protestantism, not from the pastor in question. Full quote is:
“Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong (sin boldly), but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world.”

Billy Hallowell seems to be misusing it in this case, as it means we’re all sinners but in the end we strive to love and follow Christ. Billy’s usage seems to be saying “She’s proud of sinning,” which would be a false interpretation.

Ah, so we are assuming the original use, and possible misinterpretation, is Hollawell‘s and not Strickland’s? That would be a huge (strong, bold) leap… and probably a sin, but what the hay? Let’s sin with strength and boldness!

“Ah, so we are assuming the original use, and possible misinterpretation, is Hollawell‘s and not Strickland’s?”

No, the original use was Luther’s. Nowhere in the article, except for Billy Hallowell’s article title, is the phrase used.

“That would be a huge (strong, bold) leap… and probably a sin, but what the hay?”

Not sure how that’s a sin. Unless you‘re saying Billy’s purposeful misattribution of the quote was a sin. I suppose that makes sense.

“Let’s sin with strength and boldness!”

I’d prefer to love and follow Christ with strength and boldness, enough so that my sins are forgiven when I repent. You know, like Luther suggested.

While I think the guy here is a real whiner, and the “reverend” is a serius loser, at least it highlights the innate problems with many offshoots of Protestantism. The quote in the headline, purportedly used by Strickland, is not original. It is directly from Martin Luther, one of the “fathers” of the Protestant Revolt in the 16th Century and the founder of the Lutheran Church.

RPP, I like your points. You mention this article highlights the problems with some offshoots of Protestantism, but I would go further. I believe it highlights the problem with humanity. Romans chapter 3 says we are all sinners, everyone. Only Jesus Christ was perfect, which makes his sacrifice so amazing — It covers our imperfections.

Everyone needs Christ and everyone who has accepted Christ as their Savior needs trust Him daily. This shows that all people (pastors, plumbers, young & old) are all imperfect and need Jesus daily to overcome sin and temptation. James chapter 1 talks about Christianity being a lifelong battle to overcome sin in our life — It starts with becoming a Christian (Christ follower), but doesn’t end until death.

Humanity is flawed, not just one denomination or sub-section. Pray for both of them — the whiner (lol) and the pastor. I am more concerned with them realizing their sin and getting it fixed with God and man, than who did the sinning.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” ~Romans 3:23-24

As an Episcopalian who has left her church, I will alo say the article is tellin about what is wrong with the western part of the Anglican church, ie. Episcopal church in American, the Church of Englad, etc. I am not including the African Anglican churches in this.
First, the episcopal church probably doesn’t see a lot wrong with this if the two were unmarried. The church takes a wishy-washy stand on pre-marital sex, just as it does on abortion. Obviously, the Episcopal church now ordains women (and openly homosexual men and women). I’m old-fashioned. I think that women aren‘t God’s first choice to be pastors. In the Anglican Church, there are places of leadership for women–they’re called convents.

I am not sure though that S. could be said to be “praying” on C. She was a youth minister. He’s a year older than her. Copeland needs to grow up. Hot affairs that resemble something out of Shades of Gray don’t last.

Rather it seems to have become a socio-political club for those who want to pretend to be Christians without any real moral or truthful commitment. Maybe they should just switch completely over to the worship of Belial, because at least then they would be honest, rather than trying to find some harmony between Jesus and Belial.

If you really want to read from the inspired text then learn the ancient languages, if that is too much trouble, then research one of the many fine versions of the Bible that are accurately translated into modern English. If you really believe that the KJV is the only translation, then I assume that you are opposed to bibles that are translated into any of the other languages spoken elsewhere on the planet. Do you believe that we need to teach the lost to read olde English before we can give them a bible?

kjv is just as flawed as other translations, it has a cult like following of adherents who think that they have a closer walk with YHVH because of their stance, the best version of the scriptures is the one that you read and then obey. the original messianic scriptures were most likely written in hebrew and aramaic as that was the language of the region the reason that the greek manuscript do not agree in toto is due to the fact they are all translations of the original, when looked at as a whole we can get a concenus of the meaning of the original intent. the kjv is a good translation but only that.

More and more it seems that the certain denominations are adopting “Do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law.”

    LAODICEA

I know all about you: how you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other, but since you are neither, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth. You say to yourself, ‘I am rich, I have made a fortune, and have everything I want’, never realizing that you are wretchedly and pitiably poor, and blind and naked too.

Another instance where the Bible is being misused. I recall one of the qualifications of being a preacher that he be a man. No offense intended to you spiritual ladies out there, but God has an order of things, and women as pastors and preachers is not permitted, at least not Biblicly.

If you read the Bible, you will find that the Apostle Paul appointed several women to lead churches, including Lydia and Prisca. The prohibition against women priests did not begin until the 4th century and it was socially based, not Biblically.

Start here and do your own study of the subject:

God is a God of order and balance. He has established order within the family (Gen. 3:16; 1 Cor. 11:3; Eph. 5:22-33; Col. 3:18-21 ) and the church (1 Tim. 2:11-14; 1 Cor. 11:8-9). Even within the Trinity there is an order, a hierarchy. The Father sent the Son (John 6:38) and both the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit (John 14:26; 15:26). Jesus said, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me,” (John 6:38). It is clear that God is a God of order and structure.

In creation, God made Adam first and then Eve to be his helper. This is the order of creation. It is this order that Paul mentions in 1 Tim. 2:11-14 when speaking of authority. Being a pastor or an elder is to be in the place of authority. Therefore, within the church, for a woman to be a pastor or elder, she would be in authority of men in the church which contradicts what Paul says in 1 Tim. 2:11-14.

Additionally, in the Old Testament in over 700 mentions of priests, every single one was a male. There is not one instance of a female priest. This is significant because priests were ordained by God to hold a very important office of ministering the sacrifices. This was not the job of women. Therefore, from what I see in Genesis 1-2, 1 Timothy 2, and Titus 1, the normal and proper person to hold the office of elder/pastor is to be a man.

Start there and get back at me.

      @DoctorRon

The bible never says the Lydia and Priscilla (I assume you meant Priscilla) were pastors or priestesses. They opened up their houses for the church to meet, but it never said they were running the church as pastors. They couldn’t… Not because they weren‘t worthy or didn’t have the skills, but because it wasn‘t their part in God’s plan. It has never been. And they knew it and also knew their worth before God wasn’t dictated by their position in church.

A person’s worth to God has never been determined by position: Abraham was the father of God’s nation but he was not the Priest, Melchisedec was.

Moses led israel from captivity and received instructions directly from God daily…but he wasn’t a priest, his cousin was.

Esther saved the Jews from extermination as the queen of Persia, but she wasn’t the spiritual leader.

David was a man after God’s own heart and king of the whole nation, but he was not the priest…

There were 12 tribes in Israel, but only one was allowed to work in the temple, not because the others couldn’t do the work or were not worthy or loved by God.

God is the God of order is hierarchy. Not our kind of hierarchy though that derives worth from positions… Women are just as worthy as man in God’s eyes and they can be and are instrumental pieces of his plan of salvation, but they were not called to be shepherds of the flock.

Those who oppose women in the pulpit traditionally fall back on “let them be the husband of one wife”.
However, this is generally considered to be an admonition that the pastor have only one responsibility; that they be focused on the business of Christ. it also flys in the face of Priscilla, who Paul called his equal in service.
