Singer Amy Winehouse Found Dead

Amy Winehouse Found Dead at 27

Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead Saturday.

Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her London apartment, Sky News is reporting.

Police officers discovered the body of the Grammy Award-winning “Rehab” singer and pronounced her dead at the scene. She was 27.

Cause of death is currently unknown and an investigation is ongoing.

Winehouse canceled her European tour last month following a disastrous concert in Serbia for which she was heavily booed. She struggled publicly with drug and alcohol abuse and had been in and out of rehab, most recently for a one-week stint in late May.

Her award-winning “Back to Black” album debuted in 2006.

NEW YORK (AP) — There may not be another singer whose life was so defined and embodied by one song.

When Amy Winehouse first released her biggest hit, 2007′s “Rehab,” it was received as wry, witty, and brilliant form of self-reflection, given her history of drug and alcohol addiction, already well-documented though she was just 23 years old then.

As the album that it came from, “Back to Black,” became a multiplatinum sensation and the singer behind it fell deeper and deeper into addiction, the lyrics —”They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, ‘No, no, no,’” — became harder to enjoy.

And as she repeatedly relapsed after several rehabilitation attempts and went into a drug free-fall, the lyrics became cautionary, and later, contributed to the caricature of a deeply disturbed woman whose stunning talent was wasting away, along with the body that talent occupied.

With Winehouse’s death Saturday at age 27 — joining the ranks of drug-addled rock stars Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison, who died at the same age — perhaps now people will be able look past that one song. Perhaps now we can appreciate her for what she was — a dazzling, versatile singer blessed with a mind that produced lyrics that were coarse, hilarious, heartbreaking and revelatory, and always spellbinding.

Just as Winehouse was so much more than a drug addict, her music was so much more — and richer — than “Rehab.”

Certainly, it was the song that made her a worldwide sensation — it also captured her record and song of the year at the Grammys in 2008. But the former teen celebrity came into her own as an artist a few years before, with the 2003 album “Frank.“ Whereas ”Black to Black” relied heavily on a retro, 1960s soul groove, “Frank” hearkened to an even earlier time. On the album, she enveloped a world inhabited by jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington, yet decidedly modern: One song was titled “(Expletive) Me Pumps.”

Her malleable voice had great range, and expertly embodied the emotion of the moment — from sassy defiance to lovelorn longing. The album made her a hit in her native Britain, and also made the spotlight white-hot on the singer, and her apparent demons.

Tabloids chronicled her drunken behavior, drug use, dramatic weight loss, and troubled love life — it was around this time she became involved with Blake Fielder-Civil, who would later become her husband, as well as her drug partner.

Though Winehouse would remain a fixture in the press, it would more than three years for “Back to Black,” her next album, to come out. A triumph when it debuted in Britain in late 2006, its release in the United States was highly anticipated: At one intimate showcase before its release, VIPs like Jay-Z showed up to get a listen to the much-heralded performer.

Musically, Winehouse delivered. The album was considered one of the best of that year, and will likely be considered as one of the best of her generation. Delving into her own warped mindset, the album chronicled her troubled romantic life and the despair over it with sultry brilliance: Her drug troubles only took center stage once, on “Rehab” (A song “Addicted,” about her love of marijuana, was left off the album’s American edition).

“Rehab” was the album’s biggest single, becoming a top 10 hit in the United States. While the album didn’t spawn any follow-up hits, it was a cohesive gem that transfixed the music world.

Although she was a musical triumph, she became better known to the masses worldwide for her precipitous decline into the depths of drug addiction. When she put out “Back to Black,” she declared herself sober: by the end of 2007, she was dealing with troubles with the law, failed attempts at rehab, erratic behavior, and canceled concerts.

Still, she was the belle of the Grammys in 2008 as she captured five trophies, including two of the night’s most prestigious trophies for “Rehab.” The fact that she could not attend the Los Angeles ceremony because she was in rehab — and performed from London after getting a brief reprieve from her facility — only crystallized her reputation as an extremely fragile, self-destructive persona.

The night, during which she won five trophies, was the highlight of her life, and a moment she could never recapture.

Instead of taking the path toward sobriety, Winehouse descended into more drug-induced madness. She appeared at concerts sporadically, and when she did, often gave incoherent, disheveled performances that angered the crowds. At times, she also flaunted her drug use in the media.

Musically, with the exception of an occasional recording here and there, she faded into the background, as other new talents — Adele, Lady Gaga — took her place as the sensation of the moment.

Still, many music fans were still waiting for her comeback. But with each moment that passed, it seemed unlikely that she would be able to get herself together for such an undertaking. Though a new album was teased for 2011, she clearly wasn’t in any shape to sing; In June, she checked into a clinic that treats drug problems. Later that month, she canceled her European tour after embarrassing herself yet again with another disjointed mess of a performance in Serbia.

So, like so many deeply disturbed performers, Winehouse’s life ends with no chance for another act: She becomes yet another cautionary tale that some will follow, and others choose to ignore.

But like Hendrix, Joplin, Michael Jackson, Judy Garland and other celebrities with tragic downfalls, her musical legacy — though ever so brief — will provide that comeback, for her musical legacy.

Sure, that’s just what is needed here– more cheap shots from the leftist crowd. If you are not a lefty, you should be. You are a perfect fit.

Hugh, where’s the joke about her death? I haven’t read any funny comments.

Why are artists that write and sing very good not taken as seriously as artists that have addiction problems, crapy attitudes, low morals, etc.? I believe you can take the same person with the same songs and present them in a clean cut way or present them as an f’ed up druggie with a bad attitude and the latter would get all the praise from the entertainment media.

I remember thinking about the 27 thing when I was a heavy user. I could certainly understand why. Fortunately, by the grace of God I was spared and got sober at 25. However, I had relapsed when I was 27 and really thought about. Things got bad real quick. I got sober again and made it another 2 years until I relapsed over the very same girl I had relapsed over in the first round…sheesh Insanity. However, it was during that time I had worked the steps and gained a relationship with God and learned the power of the spirit. Had some rocky days after that because I knew how hard it was to get and stay sober and I just didn’t want to have to do it all again. Got 3 DUI’s in 8 months after never having a record prior too. It was a if God had given me my chance and I didn’t listen. So lost my drivers license for 14 years. That did the trick…lol Actually, I had gotten sober before the final court trial. First time I ever had kicked Heroin with out going to a rehab. Well, I didn’t, it was through and by the power of God through the spirit, this I am certain of. That had been the greatest blessing to ever come to my life. I am a blessed man being an addict, I know this today. To the extent one can appreciate happiness is dependent upon just how great an experience of sadness they had. This was the case with my life. I am currently getting my degree and working on getting my license to be a therapist in the addiction field. Well, actually, I want to focus on the co-dependents.

I was not surprised. But the only person that can change a life of drug and alcohol abuse is the abuser. No amount of treatment will work unless the abuser decides to change. Unfortunately, Winehouse died while reaching her “bottom”. Sad waste of a promising singer. My prayers go out to the family. It is never easy watching a loved one die slowly from drug abuse.

@Hobbs Stay strong brother! May God forever help you on your journey! I know a guy whom i grew up with. We played little league baseball together, went to school at the same schools, and played on the same baseball teams. He was a notorious pot head in HS. Mr. Popular then went on to heavier drugs, as like the rest of the HS graduates. It wasnt MJ that did it, it was his lifestyle. He became addicted to drugs, esp cocaine. He quit and went into the USMC, where he graduated BT. On his 2 week leave after basic training, he came home a relapsed on cocaine. In return, he was kicked out of the USMC immidiately. All during this time, he got a girl pregnant. She had his daughter and he was back in town with a new addiction, heroin. Needless to say, after 2-3 yr struggle, he didnt get off of it. He died earlier this year from cardiac arrest from using heroin and smoking crack. He was 25 or 26 years old. Now his baby momma is left raising the child alone. And his Daughter will never get to know her dad. Its very, very sad. Strong people need to help cure the weak with out punitive damages. It only causes them to become even weaker. Only the user can change his/her ways of addiction, no one else. Strong people can only give strong words of encouragement.

@ Causeforliberty – Thank you for your words. I know the story of your friend, it is far to common. I am currently helping raise my sisters little girls because of her and her bay‘s daddy’s addiction. I am so tired of it all and often find it difficult because I feel like a hypocrite. However, I learned a great deal by watching this whole process with her. My mother enables my sister in every way. She is the guilt child of the five of us off spring. The toughest, my Mom holds guilt from raising the rest of us in less than perfect conditions, and this guilt pushes her , like a disease, to constantly enable my sister. Because of this, my sister never has to deal with any consequences and my Mother comforts and defends her in every emotional situation. Always blaming others and ensuring my sister never has to feel the effects of her actions by supporting her. I am very independent, always have been, but my sponsor in Florida told me I had to cut my Mom off. I couldn’t take no money or get any support from her. He said I had to practice faith and trust God would provide. God did, EVERY TIME. I have been working with families for many years and have watched “enablers” kill their very children thinking they are trying to save them. The enabler has the same problem as the addict, they are powerless. They can‘t accept they don’t have the answer or the power to change the addict. It kills both of them. Every addict/alcoholic has an enabler. I will focus on this when I start my

Every one of those “Losers” have a mother and a father, maybe sister or brother, or children who are suffering. Addicts and alcoholics are often some of the most compassionate and unique people on earth when they are sober. Sadly, as I myself have this disease, many just lack the ability to do anything about it. Yes, some just don’t care and are determined to destroy themselves and whomever comes across their path, but these are often the ones who don’t die. They are too self centered and have to share their addiction with their narcissistic personality. The rest, such as myself, never had a chance from the gate. As a child in an environment that teaches all the coping skills that are dependent upon using a substance in order to emotionally survive, ones life is dark and empty until they discover the part that was missing, that is, the drug or the botlle. IT is then, life makes perfect sense. Drugs and/or alcohol complete them and for some time, works for them. For the first time, the fear, stress, anxiety, and overwhelming life crippling emotional extremes are quieted and they feel a part of society. The conflict is one that is rooted in the garden of Eden and the lie is that of which Eve par took. The tree of knowledge, that is, the voice of society always chirping, programming, and telling people who they should be, what they should be, what is right and wrong, and so on. One who has no foundation is eaten alive by this knowledge. I am out of space and doubt you under

There will be those who will make fun of her, her talent.

In truth…we all literally watched her slow death over the last couple of years.
    Poor tortured soul.
May she find peace and release from her terrible addictions.

In truth, I didn’t watch anything. I only knew about her and some rehab song about her daddy and her saying No no no….real edgy stuff.
Then she dissipated from mass awareness, disappeared off the radar screen, and now she’s dead.

OMG- my dog can not stand the sound of her voice! I only know of her from her being on the news lately, so I decided to open you tube to hear a little of her music and my dog has gone crazy. Guess he is not into that.

Not the talent of Hendrix, Joplin or Morison. And clearly not the class of Pat Tillman.

      @JGINMT

Jim Morrison had zero talent. He was quite skilled at writing juvenile poems about lizards and wanking in public, but I would not consider those talents. He was the original Beavis only a huge narcissist as well.

Its amazing to me the hatefilled comments on here. How is something that is non political suddenly become something political? The ignorant right wing scares me as much as the ignorant left wing. I for one am saddened at an evidently tortured soul. As far as the hate comments go…. you are no better than the scribes on huffington.

Was she not wearing a DOT approved helmet? Was there a loaded, unregistered firearm in the house where her body was discovered? Did she ever consume fried foods or anything high in trans-fats? If so, this is an EXCELLENT opportunity for bureaucrats in the ruling class that are much smarter than you & I to pass legislation that will help us all live forever!

Not unexpected. Too much money and fame too early in life has a powerfully corrupting influence; especially if they don’t have a solid home with two loving parents that provide a consistent reality and ego check.

C’mon, aren’t you going to give the devil credit for Gaga? She writes catchy songs and has a tremendous voice, which are certainly blessings from God. But the stuff she writes/sings about, the disrespect to the church, and the issues she supports are just a few of the things that come from the dark side. God is light, and much of Gaga is not influenced by light but rather by darkness.

Thank you for posting an intelligent message, rather than the ignorant crap most everyone is putting up here. I hold the music industry at least partially at fault for this – they recruit, use and discard these young kids and leave them to their own devices. They are not emotionally equipped to handle what comes with fame. RIP Amy.

While I don’t subsribe to the Amy Winehouse or Lady Gaga BS, it is sad that the industry sucks these kids in and uses them for the money, then lets them disintegrate like that. Pretty disgusting. But, life is tough. It is not just the music industry. It is all of us.
