Singer Cee Lo Green (AP)
R&B singer Cee Lo Green prompted a rush of anger for his New Year‘s Eve performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine” in which he swapped the lyrics “no religion too” to “all religions true.”
Green performed the famous ballad shortly before the ball dropped in New York’s Times Square. It was broadcast during NBC‘s New Year’s Eve special and CNN carried a portion of it as well.
The full line Green changed was: “Nothing to kill or die for, And all religions true,” prompting a flurry of angry reactions from atheists and Lennon fans alike on Twitter.
According to the Huffington Post, Green himself took to the site to defend his performance and responded to several profanity-laced messages. All of Green’s tweets were deleted from his account Sunday morning.
“Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that’s all,” Green wrote in one now-deleted message.
That didn’t stopped the barrage of outraged tweets, many of which accused Green of committing “blasphemy” by altering Lennon’s song.
Other users took inspiration from the title Green’s 2010 song “F–k You” to compose their tweets.
“F–k you, Cee Lo. It‘s ’And no religion too.’ F–k you for spitting in the face of John Lennon & what he conveyed with his lyrics. F–k you!” wrote Twitter user TerranRich, who describes himself in his profile as an atheist and a liberal.
Watch Green’s performance below. Lyric swap occurs at the 5:00 mark.

What about theists of all stripes? You know, if Cee Lo is right, that means the Unitarians win right?
Also, I would like to point out that Cee Lo Green is a semi-regular part of the “Disney entertainers troupe” which puts his opinion as slightly more valuable than Daffy Duck‘s and about a quarter as valuable as Bugs Bunny’s.

Only song I have problems with anyone changing the lyrics to would be the American National Anthem.

And no libetards too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…
By definition libetards and progressotards are not human beings. Unicellular “things” do not constitute viable life. Since gluon is a concept unimaginable to non intelligent life, libetards and progressotards will thankfully “naturally select” themselves out. That will leave us people on earth, and we’ll finally have the peace we deserve!

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 9:30pmActually, as it turns out when you read all tweets, most were right wing types objecting to the lyric, “All religions are true.” That’s because that statement assumes the Muslim religion is true as well as the Christian religion. Most found the idea that both the Christian religion and the Muslim are both true to be objectionable, because so many believe the Muslims are a threat. But that’s nothing new. Americans at different periods have hated the Catholic religion as well.
“Anti-Catholicism was widespread in the 1920s; anti-Catholics, including the Ku Klux Klan, believed that Catholicism was incompatible with democracy and that parochial schools encouraged separatism and kept Catholics from becoming loyal Americans.”

Why is it that when a republican like George W Bush spends lots of money the government does not have it is OK but when a democrat tries to spend money to help the country get out of a severe financial crisis created by a republican then it is not OK to spend money?
Dubya Bush severely lowered taxes at the same time that he started two wars costing trillions before it is all complete, and dubya also spent tons of money creating Medicare Part D and did not allow for competition for pharmaceuticals so that drug costs go through the roof while companies earn record profits…

“if all religions are true, then that would mean that we are in essence all gods ourselves, creating our own relative realities”
It is interesting to note that Lucifer is described as a deceiver and that a certain lie was told to Eve in the garden of Eden (perhaps an alliterative rather than literal account, but the concept of what took place at the dawn of human consciousness is all too real). That lie was that we could taste the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and become gods ourselves and that is why our Creator forbade us from tasting of it. The truth was that it’s knowledge was meant for a time when our Creator deemed us to be ready for it, and He was right. The more rapidly we acquire knowledge, given our propensity for self-destruction, the greater we put ourselves at risk. God was protecting us, not denying us our ultimate destiny. The lie caused us to question Him, break our bonds of fellowship with Him by not trusting in Him, and seek to become gods like Him when we (as created beings ourselves) were meant to be partners in creation WITH Him (under His care and guidance), not apart from Him.
The phrase “all religions true” is this same lie that we can all become gods and follow our own paths. While I believe religion definitely has its place in our lives, we would be better off with NO religion than the lie that each of us is the maker of our own salvation.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 3:20pmFor the Christian it is better to believe in “no religions” and say that following Christ is not really a religion, while all of the other religions are false. But in any case, it is an obvious fact that not all religions can be true when in many instances they directly contradict one another. If Islam is true, then Christianity is false, that is just a fact, and vice versa.

Want something fun to wrap your mind around? Study what Roger Penrose found out about the big bang and how there are ripples in the cosmic background radiation that show there was time before the big bang :)
There was a universe before the big bang… and the big bang occurs when enough black holes swallow up enough matter and bump into each other and go boom boom: new universe.

You’re technically incorrect. You’d have to be a god to be outside it. Or rather reside in hyperspace, because the term “outside”in the context is meaningless.
Else, you‘d be within it and you’d “hear” it. Provided that your ears are made for the super high frequencies that would be generated by the process–it would be unaudible with your current set.

Black holes are a mathematical construct. Mind you, the equation that describe them actually aren’t describing them, unless you normalize a heck outta them. Normalization is akin to adding eye of newt and a wing of bat. Voodoo cosmology. White dwarf, Red Giant, Darkwing Duck, err Dark Matter… why it all sounds like protagonists from a fairy tale? Because it is a fairy tale.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 5:47pm@ Culprit… I shot down my own theory? How retarded of a statement was that! Goodness, I’m not theorizing here only discussing an article and a pretty significant find as far as cosmology is concerned. You’re pretty pathetic when you feel the need to go around debunking opinions and thoughts, you know that, right tool bag?
@Bomustgo – cute yes, no sound in a vacuum. Call it the big bump then.
@twobyfour – Theories and science are not to be believed in; to me they’re only postulated and/or verified. The black holes are … strange … I try to imagine the event horizon, where time and extension trade places; where the space we normally perceive around us flip flops with time and it’s now time that is perceived all around with the hidden presence of space in the background. Far as believing goes.. well, if you wanted to believe Ptolomy was correct and you didn’t believe Copernicus, you could still tell time, predict eclipses and all that jazzy stuff and you wouldn’t be incorrect about your belief… nor would you be correct. Relativity is funny that way. Just don’t take a trip to the center of any galaxy, any time soon ;) Happy New Year.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 5:48pmBOMUSTGO, you‘d begin to think that I am a nit picker and you’d be right.
There is nothing said about a sound or voice, the term used is “word”. Granted, it’s my humble opinion that it encapsulates a range of frequencies, but the intent may be something closer to a visual or mathematical pattern than an auditory one.
An inadequate analogy or model would be a set of interference patters that create a hologram. The genetic material contained in a cell may be also considered a good analogy for “the word”.
A caveat. Some may think that I am a creationist (in the traditional biblical sense). I am not. Though I am a theist, I am ultra-orhodox as science goes. Here are the core scientific ultra-orthodoxy principles:
1. We can’t access reality directly, even our senses provide a selective inference.
2. The only honest stance in science is acknowledging the #1.
3. We can devise approximations of reality, models that provide a tentative explanation of some phenomena or inferred properties.
4. As long as we are aware of #1, #2, and #3, and qualify our statements within a framework of a theory, we are true to the precepts of science.
5. Claiming something as an immutable fact is not an attribute of science, but a faith based belief system.
In summary, science is a tentative description of accessible reality. It can’t prove or disprove metaphysical concept as they are outside of its defined scope–any scientific theory must be falsifiable or it’s not science.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 5:56pmJJ Coolay – people are missing the significance completely. If the big bang is only one out of a procession of bangs………………. the universe is potentially…… beyond old and we’re living in an aeon. Penrose’s find shuts up steven hawking (thank god) and stops a lot of claptrap running around the scientific community about needing a theory of everything or a god particle to explain existence (42 comes to mind). On a side note CeeLo is a fantastic artist.
All other dichotomy loving nutbags playing the either/or game, go ahead and hold hands with Soren Kierkegaard, think worthless thoughts and believe the world is 6000 years old – but, ya better hurry up n’ get back to your 7th Day Adventist meetings.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 6:02pmTwo By Four… I’d say your ultra orthodox principles are pretty… positivist. As soon as you accept a metaphysic, you accept that not only can you access reality but, you are part of it, senses and all.
All hail, Aristotle.
Report Post »Twobyfour
Posted on January 1, 2012 at 7:48pmMetaphysics and science don’t mix. They are different means to make a sense of the world, with their specific rule sets.
For science, that means falsifiability. Period.
And now a bit of levity…
A team of scientists met with God. They were telling him that he is no longer needed, because they figured out how to make life from a scratch.
God listens and then says: ” Can you describe the process? How you go about creating new life?”
One of the scientist responds: “We take dirt…”
God: “What dirt?”
Scientist: “Any dirt.”
God: “No, NO! Make your own dirt!”

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 10:23pmScience rests upon metaphysics, period. Just as philosophy rests upon a sound epistemology –> . <– No, they don't mix necessarily, else we'd have to re-identify some things. Without a metaphysic, you are left as you say… never in touch with reality and always claiming it's impossible to know reality. Same argument as Plato and Aristotle had, you're pointing up, I'm pointing down. Do you really think you're separate from reality? A blinded observer? Doomed to ignorance of what's behind the veil of your senses? If you say you exist, that's flatly stating there is that within which you exist and that you are part of that within which you exist. Saying you cannot have any knowledge of existence beyond the scientific and even that is suspect as we still have to use our senses is incredibly platonic. It reminds me of nihilists… they open their mouth to say anything or even to make the claim 'nothing exists' and my response is 'why even speak then?'
Words are related to objects; knowledge is not simply a matter of language and symbol manipulation and the law of identity, is never arbitrary.
Nice joke, by the way.
