Here are 6 Moments Where the Media has Wrongly Blamed Conservatives (and the Tea Party) for Violence

After James “The Joker” Holmes committed unspeakable acts of violence at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” last Friday, ABC’s Brian Ross — in what can only be described as a sloppy act of journalism — practically jumped at the chance to tie the shooter to the Tea Party.

“There is a Jim Holmes of Aurora, CO, uh Paige, on the Colorado Tea Party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last summer. We don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes, but it is Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado,” Ross said.

Problem: Ross and ABC never investigated the connection. Had they checked their facts, they would’ve discovered that the 52-year-old Tea Partier was not, in fact, the same man arrested by Aurora police that morning. But that didn’t stop Ross. He went on national television and casually tossed out the idea that the Tea Party might somehow be connected to the “Batman” massacre.

Of course, ABC and Ross have apologized for their sloppy reporting, but the speculation remains: Somebody, whether it was Ross or his producers, wanted to tie the conservative grassroots movement to the nightmarish events that took place that night.

But you know what? Conservatives should be used to this at this point. After all, it’s not like Ross’ undisciplined act of media malpractice is a first. Indeed, the media has a long and illustrious history of trying to tie acts of psychopathic violence to either the Tea Party or some other conservative group or personality.

Lawyer and Blogger Gabriel Malor has an op-ed in the New York Post that includes a sampling of some of the moments when the media, without any sort of evidence or proof, has falsely connected conservatism to random and senseless acts of violence. We’ve decided to pick six of them and go into detail.

6. Dr. Amy Bishop

University of Alabama in Huntsville professor Dr. Amy Bishop on February 12, 2010, opened fire on 12 of her colleagues with 9-millimeter handgun, killing three and wounding three more. After the horrific incident, Reuters Foundation Fellow Jonathan Curiel pondered her motivation: “Does racism explain the tenure shooting and the tea party movement?”

No. It doesn’t.

Had Curiel done a little legwork, he would have discovered not only Bishop’s long history of violence, but the fact that, according to one family source, she “was a far-left political extremist who was obsessed with President Obama,” the Boston Herald reported.

Strike one.

5. The Discovery Channel Eco-Terrorist

Armed with two starter pistols and an explosive device, 43-year-old eco-terrorist James Lee entered the Discovery Communications headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., on September 1, 2010, and took three people hostage. After a tense four-hour standoff, authorities shot Lee dead and freed the hostages.

But when the story broke, Think Progress [of course] rushed to claim that Lee’s rambling, incoherent, and frightening eco-manifesto sounded, like, totally similar to certain conservative immigration reform groups.

Therefore, he’s probably one of those crazy, right-wing extremists, right?

Wrong.

Here’s a sample of Lee’s manifesto:

Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive [sic] creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.

For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human’s lifespan! THIS IS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!

It is the responsibility [sic] of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES!

Conservatives support many things, but a world where people die so that trees might live isn’t one of them.

Strike two.

4. The Census-Taker

Field Representative for the United States Census Bureau William Edwin “Bill” Sparkman’s nude body was found tied to a tree with the word “fed” scribbled across his chest on September 12, 2009, in Clay County, Kentucky. His government ID was taped his neck and his feet and hands were bound with duct tape.

Given the nature of his work and the fact that “fed” was written on his chest, it wasn’t long before the media started suggesting he was murdered by anti-government conservatives.

When the Associated Press detailed Sparkman’s death, the lefty blogosphere blew up.

Media’s True Crime Report blog cited the “rage against Washington . . . especially in the rural South,” and argued that Sparkman’s death had “all the makings of some anti-government goober taking his half-wit beliefs way too far.”

“Trig Truther” Andrew Sullivan blamed “Southern populist terrorism, whipped up by the GOP and its Fox and talk-radio cohorts” and liberal talk-show host Stephanie Miller said the Tea Party was responsible for inciting violence.

As it turns out, Sparkman killed himself and staged it to look like a murder so his family could collect the insurance money.

Strike three.

3. The Times Square Bomber

On May 1, 2010, two New York Times Square street vendors noticed smoke pouring out of an SUV and quickly alerted a nearby police officer. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered a car bomb that had failed to detonate and removed it without any further incident.

The media and left-leaning politicians didn’t waste any time jumping to conclusions.

The person who tried to bomb Times Square was probably “a mentally deranged person or somebody with a political agenda that doesn’t like the health-care bill or something,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested during an interview with Katie Couric.

The Nation’s Robert Dreyfuss claimed that the bomber was “either a lone nut job or a member of some squirrely branch of the Tea Party, anti-government far right. Which actually exists in Connecticut, where, it seems, the car’s license plates were stolen.”

And, of course, from the lovely folks at the Daily Kos:

The reality is that in this country there seem to be essentially two scenarios that can unfold at this point when we hear about terrorism, two kinds of people/groups that typically end up being involved. And that says quite a lot in and of itself. If I were the Tea Partiers, I wouldn’t be too quick to dwell on the question of why Americans might think they’re involved in terrorism. I don’t think that’s a discussion that’s going to go well for them.

But two days after the bomb was neutralized, the feds arrested 30-year-old Faisal Shahza who, according to U.S. officials, was trained in a Pakistani terrorist camp. He was later found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for his botched attempt at terrorism. When the judge told him that he’d never walk again as a free man, Shahza responded with “Allahu akbar.”

“If I am given 1,000 lives, I will sacrifice them all for the sake of Allah fighting this cause, defending our lands, making the word of Allah supreme over any religion or system,” Shahza told a packed courtroom.

So, wait, he wasn’t mad about Obamacare?

2. The IRS Kamikaze Attack

Software consultant Andrew Joseph Stack on 18 February, 2010, flew a plane into an IRS building in Austin, Tx., killing himself and IRS manager Vernon Hunter and injuring thirteen others.

Of course, because it was an IRS building, the press was more than willing to assume Stack was a member of the Tea Party.

“There’s no information yet on whether he was involved in any anti-government groups or whether he was a lone wolf. But after reading his 34-paragraph screed, I am struck by how his alienation is similar to that we’re hearing from the extreme elements of the Tea Party movement,” Jonathan Capehart wrote for the Washington Post

“He was mad at the IRS, and left what CNN reports was a suicide note on a local website, detailing his trials with the agency. In fact, a lot of his rhetoric could have been taken directly from a handwritten sign at a tea party rally [emphasis added],” Chris Rovzar wrote for New York Magazine.

Our dear friends at the Daily Kos explained: “teabaggers have struck with their first 9/11 inspired terrorist attack.”

And then there’s this suggestive image [via Sweetness & light]:

As it turns out, Stack was about as unstable as the Discovery Channel Eco-Terrorist. His verbose and bizarre suicide note ends with the following: “The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed.”

Quoting “The Communist Manifesto” and disparaging capitalism? Definitely a Tea Partier.

Strike five.

1. Palin Caused the Gabby Giffords Shooting

Aside from the “Batman” massacre, this is probably the most egregious example of the media rushing to blame conservatives for terrible acts of violence.

Mentally disturbed and apolitical Jared Loughner on January 8, 2011, took a taxi to a Safeway supermarket in Casas Adobes, Az., and opened fire on a crowd that had gathered to meet Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ). Loughner’s rampage left six people dead and injured thirteen more, including the congresswoman who, miraculously, survived a bullet to the head.

But before the police even had time to collect all of the shell casings, the media had already accused former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — and anyone like her – of being responsible for Loughner’s insanity.

“Arizona massacre: Should Sarah Palin share the blame?” read one headline.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, blamed Palin as well as Sharron Angle for the shooting: “I think [their] statements are totally irresponsible and they’re not without consequences.”

Elsewhere, the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank blamed Palin and Glenn Beck for the shooting.

“Both are finally being held to account for recklessly playing with violent images in a way that is bound to incite the unstable,” said Milbank during an appearance on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”

The New York Times’ Paul Krugman published a blog post blaming conservatives for the tragedy within just hours of the incident:

Just yesterday, Ezra Klein remarked that opposition to health reform was getting scary. Actually, it’s been scary for quite a while, in a way that already reminded many of us of the climate that preceded the Oklahoma City bombing.

You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.

Here’s the best part of his wild, flying leap to conclusions: “We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was.”

Really?

Of course, as most Blaze readers know at this point, Loughner wasn’t motivated by conservatives –  he was motivated by the voices in his head. Prior to the Tuscon shooting, he didn’t watch TV, he burned American flags, he “disliked” the news, he pored over “The Communist Manifesto“ and ”Mein Kampf,” and he didn’t listen to talk radio. Furthermore, it has been revealed that he is a registered independent.

“He didn’t take sides. He wasn’t on the left. He wasn’t on the right,” said Loughner’s high school friend Zach Osle.

What was that about it being “politically motivated”?

Strike six.

“Is it just me, or is it odd that the media’s go-to suspect in these things is always, always on the conservative side of the political spectrum. It’s almost like they have an agenda or something,” the blog Ace of Spades writes.

      Conservatives are still not doing a good enough job at exposing the lefts agenda. It dosen’t matter to liberals if they are wrong or if they are lying. There end justifies their means. As long as the connection is made between conservatives and evil, their efforts has hit the mark. The mass of liberal voters has no idea what is true. It simply fits the narrative according to the MSM so it must be true. Conservatives need more comedic satire, more national exposer, more politicians with balls who are not worring about their job, more commercials, more prime time TV movies and sitcoms.     1. Seek out a bunch of fools to create and promote evolution and atheism.
    2. Pressure everyone else to become agnostics – no religious beliefs, no judgment for sins – YEAAAAAAA
    3. Seek out strange and perverted individuals to carry out Colorado type slaughters. Afterwards, atheist blame God for allowing this or proclaim that if there was a God, Hw would not allow such terrible things to happen.
    4. Satans purpose: Get putrefying, godless liberals/socialist/fascist/Marxist/communist to start a gun grabbing campaign afterwards. After all, the periodic action of one evil person out of 311 million people calls for this. If conservatives effective and untiringly refute this, Satan returns to #3.
    5. After grabbing all effective defensive privately owned weapons, government sets up totalitarian police state. Public no longer has capability of stopping it.
    6. Government begins Waco style raids town by town slaughtering conservatives, murder being Satan’s greatest desire and ultimate goal. (Reference: Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, many African despot rulers, see wikipedia ‘Genocides in history’.)

      Agnostics don’t have “No Religious Beliefs” You are confusing Atheists with Agnostics…

      Agnostics HAVE some religious beliefs (we typically believe in a God, and we believe in right and wrong aka: sin), we just don’t follow ANY specific organized religion or follow any specific book that tells us what to believe.

      I don‘t need someone else’s opinion from a book written hundreds of years ago when humanity was so foolish that they not only believed in Angels and Demons actually existing, but they also believed the world was flat, and that Earth was the center of the universe (among many other foolish notions)…

      I don’t seek my faith in the Past… I seek my faith in the present.

      Atheists believe in nothing… Agnostics believe in “something”… There is a difference.

      Really,Atheists have the conviction of Faith.By that I mean they completely believe there is NO God.So their religion is non-belief…and they have to have as much conviction as a Christian in that regards…whereas an agnostic is fence sitting and rudderless.Find the courage to commit one way or the other.

    Liberals so wanted the Tea Party to become violent; they couldn’t understand how a large group with such high passion could not be violent. After all violence is part of how they express emotion. Seeing that NO violence could be connected with the TP, they began to manufacture a connection. They believe they can remake the facts about the TP just as they have rewritten history, distorted facts and statistics at every opportunity possible. It’s like liberals wrote a book, “Thinking for Dummies”.

      It seems to me the pattern on these things is…muslim terrorists or mentally ill folks and when politics plays a role it is the far left “greenie” types. Other than Timothy McVey, has there ever been an act like these that wasn’t one of the above three? So one out of a hundred was a anti-government “millitia” type (from the far right) and yet that is where they always go.

    The more they do this BullS**T reporting, the more we need to call them out on it, there are many more people who read about it here than they have reading and watching them combined. If all Blaze readers post these stories to facebook and twitter many more folks will be enligtened. We must all become the educators of America and put the truth out there for all to see…………Whenever I go out and there is a television in the establishment, I ask them to switch the channel if it has any of the MSM on playing on them………….My local paper is a Liberal rag, so when they are passing out free samples at the mall, I gladly take one and then walk it directly to the trash can and drop it in………….I call the New York Times subscription number and I speak my piece about how there reporting is so far left that I would never think about subscribing to the Liberal rag………..they will never change, but I tie up there phone line for about 5 minutes, and they have to pay for that long distance phone call so it’s a win, win for me. Do whatever you can to prevent these ******* Proggressives ideas from brainwashing our fellow Americans in the first place and we won’t have to work twice as hard Un-brainwashing them.

    I will not believe anyone such as this regarding e-mail threats without the solid evidence. These people tend to be alinsky radicals or part of the progressive alinsky laced agenda.
    E-mails are simple to trace and to put it loosely – I believe nothing these people allege. From suicides with notes on their chest that say the NRA did it. To the daily teleprompter recitals and DNC claims that everyone else is at fault for the results of their stated agenda to sabotage the system.
    they have pulled these stunts for decades and it has become a highly orchestrated event.
    Nobody sent her anything because she and they have no credibility left. This is the bed they have made!

    Not much to say about an academic idiot that would impose her views on everyone else and in the meantime play the victim. What is it about Christian bashers that they are impelled to misinterpet the establishment clause of the Constitution?     I have a farmer friend who stopped talking to me because I informed him in 08 of what to expect if He kept voting demoncat. He voted for small O and is now suffering much loss due to new regs put on him, including a problem over water on his land. Raising cattle he needed ponds. Now it is costing so much he is selling off the stock but is not allowed to gain the land back for crops. Seems once you put a pon

    What the media is doing is called “conditioning”. If you say it enough people will develop an association with the tea party and extremism. If the conservatives are smart they should do the same right back to the liberals. For example. Every time something like this happens blame it on a disgruntled liberal that has been pushed into this behavior by the edging of the democratic talking points. The democrats created an atmosphere of hate the rich, white and conservatives. Liberals should be on the terrorist list. THATS THE WAY TO DO IT. AND KEEP HAMMERING IT EVERY TIME ANY CRIME HAPPENS.

      Lying to the American public is not good for the ratings. Look at the numbers for MSLSD, CNN, and the over the air progressives. Look at the circulation numbers for the New York Times and the Washington Post.

    ways One of these should be to turn to young conservatives to use all their wonderful brains and
    inventive ideas. Also study the filthy liberal methods and mirror them forcefully without fear

    Have noticed total info lock down on the Colorado shooter. ( So different from the 911 tapes, daily leaks etc. in the Lefty Trial by Media of “ white Hispanic ” Zimmerman ). Is the lock down because of this shooters university / possible OWS ties ? Certainly being handled far differently than the Zimmerman witch hunt was.

      BARBER2………I’ve noticed the same thing. The MSM couldn’t pin this on conservatives/Tea Party but there are lots of rumors that the killer is OWS and BlackBloc. The MSM would not want that information out if the rumors prove to be true.

    To the leftists and the Progressives the Tea Party is their new boggyman; the creature under the bed and in the closet to use to scare the people into complying with their visions of a utopian madness to impose by force of arms if all else fails. What scares them to the core though, is they recognize the truth of the Tea Party at its heart, and it is that of Americans crying and standing for what is right, just and true – and to be FREE!

    That is their greatest of fear, the truth coming alive before their eyes, and in their despeation, they will seek to unleash more and more force as they lose control and power.

    They had best fear to the core of their being, as the day of accounting before the courts of the freed and restored Republic will come all too soon, and with determination.

      Horses arses like Krugman (who the heck is he anyway?) You’re right they are scared to the core though, because they recognize the truth of the Tea Party at its heart, and it is that of Americans crying and standing for what is right, just and true – and to be FREE! They want total government overreach and control and WE DON’T. Remember Congressman Dem. Dingell, “we need to control them”,comment. Creepy, huh?
