Skeptics Explain Why World May Not End on Saturday Night

Are you ready for apocalypse?
Harold Camping’s prediction that this Saturday will mark the end of the world has yielded a diverse array of responses from the general public. Despite the well-known broadcaster’s insistence that Jesus Christ will return this weekend, most Biblical experts and Christian adherents are skeptical — or flat out reject — Camping’s claims.

In a piece for The Washington Times, Christian author and academic Donald L. Brake, Sr. writes, “If there is one date we know the Lord will not come it is May 21, 2011 because the Scriptures are very exact.” Brake goes on to share Biblical verses that he says contradict Camping’s predictions and that reinforce commonly held belief in Christian circles that the rapture’s date is meant to be a surprise:
“No one knows about that day or hour, nor even the angels in heaven, nor the son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36, NIV).
“But of that day and hour knoweth on man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” (KJV)
“But as for that day and hour no one knows it—not even the angels in heaven—except the Father alone.” (NET Bible) Mark 13:32 reiterates the same sentiment.
While Camping’s billboards boast “The Bible guarantees it” (in reference to the May 21 date), most Christians believe, as these scriptures seem to indicate, that the Bible has been purposely unclear in specifying the exact date of Christ’s return. Doug Stirling, the pastor of Kennett Square Bible Methodist Church in Pennsylvania, is telling followers to simply ignore Camping’s Doomsday message. Stirling says,
“The Bible is very clear and it says no man will know the hour of the Lord’s return. Unless God returns before the 21st, we will have church here on the 22nd.”
Rev. Paul Viggiano of Branch of Hope Orthodox Presbyterian Church shares in the disappointment and surprise over Camping’s statements. Viggiano claims that end of the world predictions are nothing new. He writes that fringe Christian groups that believe they are living in the “last days” have been around for 2,000 years and that so far “…they’re zero for 2,000.”
While most Christians would avoid stating a specific date, in June 2010, The Pew Research Center found that 41 percent of Americans believe that Christ will return to earth by 2050. The Wall Street Journal tells us that between 30 and 40 percent of Americans believe that the Bible offers a specific order of events during the End Times. Most people who accept the notion that Christ will return believe that world events and patterns may mark that the time is near:
These include wars, increasing wickedness (wickedness always seems to be increasing), natural catastrophes like the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, long-term environmental hazards like global warming, unfolding events in Israel and the Middle East, and the emergence of global political and economic systems laying the groundwork for the Antichrist’s dictatorship. (Especially since 9/11, many prophecy popularizers have linked Islam with the Antichrist.)
A receptionist for Camping’s organization, Family Radio, is also skeptical of her boss’ predictions. In an interview with CNNMoney, she said, “I don‘t believe in any of this stuff that’s going on, and I plan on being here next week.” She‘s been busy scheduling meetings and other gatherings for the majority of Family Radio’s staff members (she claims 80 percent of the organization‘s staff don’t believe in Camping’s End Time proclamations).
Regardless of what happens on May 21, two things remain certain: Belief in Christ’s return will likely remain a popular part of our culture and Camping will have plenty of explaining to do if and when Sunday morning comes. Below, watch Camping’s “Open Forum,” during which Christians confront him on his May 21 prophesies:

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:44pmThis is how the Seventh Day Adventist church got started. A bunch of loonies predicted the end of the world and when it didn’t happen a 15 yr. old with a head injury can to their rescue by concocting an even goofier story about why it didn’t happen.

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:40pmWell, DUH?? The Bible says no man knows the time but the Father only, so this poor sap is only going to heap scorn upon himself and indirectly give Christ a black eye to the world. If Vegas would give odds on this happening, bet against it. Besides there are many “warning signals” given in the Bible in various places that portend the coming of Christ and far too many of them have yet to occur for this man to be correct.

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 10:39pmDon’t see how this will give “Christ” a black eye – He (or his minions) have already told you that no man knows the day nor the hour. Besides – he’s been through this before. as old as he is, he’s just hoping against hope that his end is near. He doesn’t want to “die”, he wants to be gathered up.

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:40pmIf you predict the end of the World, and it doens’t happen, aren’t you a bit obliged to at least end it for yourself? I mean, you may have really inconvenienced people like Arnie, who wanted to get it off his shoulder or that Froggie-clown who was head of the International Funnitary Mund, who needed to ‘get it out of his system’! I wonder how it must feel to blow your cookies with someone who is a bit less than eager to share your passion??? Blech!!! I cannot imagine!

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:31pmThe point of the scripture is to be eternally ready. Yeah the world is probably not going to end, but there is the very very small chance it might. I thought for a while that may 15th might be it lol (but thats because i thought the arabs would try to nuke israel)

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 10:41pmYou are correct and you are also wrong. there is a 50/50 chance that the world will end at any moment. Saying that you know it will not end on the 21st is as bad as saying you know that it will. NO man knows. Now if it was a woman – we’d have to give it a second look.

When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape!

17Likewise, thou son of man, set thy face against the daughters of thy people, which prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy thou against them,
18 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the [women] that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive [that come] unto you?
19 And will ye pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear [your] lies?
20 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I [am] against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make [them] fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, [even] the souls that ye hunt to make [them] fly.
21 Your kerchiefs also will I tear, and deliver my people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted; and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.
22 Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life:
23 Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I [am]

Posted on May 21, 2011 at 9:34amActually you are incorrect concerning Religion. The word Religion defines the measure of how one adheres to a specific doctrine. Very religious would be a Zealot, somewhat religious would be a Mediocre, kinda religious would be a Liberal. Its the doctrine that one believes in which makes the difference.
So the questions are:
1) What doctrine do you believe in?
The Stoic based doctrine of Hegel or Marx & Engels
The doctrine of Muhammed
The dharma doctrine
The doctrine of Liberation Theology
Some other mans version of Christian doctrine such as Darby?
Some other mans doctrine
Our Fathers doctrine
2) How much do you believe in that doctrine?
Report Post »Im a Zealot – Believes the doctrine with Zeal
Im a Mediocre – Kinda believes the doctrine but only to a point and only if its convent
Im a liberal – I believe the way I want to believe, I align with a doctrine but only on my terms

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:35pmThe Last Days began on May 14th, 1948 with the re-birth of the State of Israel.
The Last Generation began with the re-taking of Jerusalem and the Temple Site in 1967.
A “generation” is 52 years long.
“They” claimed that the year 2000, Y2K, would be the conclusion of the generation from 1948. (1948 + 52 =’ing 2000)
The 7 year Tribulation begins with the signing of a “strong covenant,” peace treaty/UN Resoulution/peace accord.
When Bill Clinton signed the Oslo “Peace Accord” on JAN. 1, 1993, “they” said, “There it is.” It was for 7 yrs., exactly 7 years to the day from the year 2000.
Well… it’s now the year 2011.
1967 + 52yrs. = 2019.
2019 – 7yrs. (the Tribulation) = 2012.
We are Raptured BEFORE the Tribulation begins.
My honest opinion/best “guess??”
I think it’s on Rosh Hashana of NEXT YEAR. At the earliest.
God told Noah on “what day, of what month, to enter the Ark.”
….. “As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be, AGAIN, at the coming of the Son of man.”
I don‘t think it’s Saturday.
I don‘t know if it’s next year around Aug.-Sept.
I do KNOW…… IT’S SOON.
God Bless Us!
Be ready NO MATTER WHAT.

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:59pmJesus said in the last days it will be as in Noah’s days. It didn’t hit me until this afternoon, what was one of the biggest things that Noah had to face was people saying that he was a fool and that God would not destroy the world. They did not even consider that Noah could be right on what God was about to do. They had never seen rain & thought it was just a werid notion of an very old man who had lost his mind.
Not that I am counting on Jesus returning Saturday. I am not selling stuff & canceling appointments. But I am ready, I have nothing so important that is giving me worry about leaving behind. Except my Dog. I have lived this way for years now so if the Lord comes today, or Saturday, or even 10 years from now, I am ready and waiting. This is how a true Christian should live and be.
I don’t think Jesus will come back Saturday, I am praying I am wrong and that Camping is right. He certainly has done a lot of research and believes in his figures. I do believe that God back in Jesus’ day was withholding the exact day of His return. However, because of the times, the information could have been opened & the day could have been known. The Book of Daniel was done this way. God even said that the understanding of that book would be only in the last days.
So folks, while I don’t think that Jesus is coming back Saturday, I will not be as one in Noah’s day & dismiss Camping & the message. God will send Jesus back or He won’t. I am ready & waiting.

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 9:30pmSnow, I am inconvinced that belief in the Rapture really does bring people closer to God, especially as the picture of God and of Christian witness it presents is so different from the true biblical one. That is not to say that people who believe in it don’t know God well, but they didn’t come to know him through THIS idiotic idea. The real danger I find in the Rapture is that its eschatology is so warped that the attempt to hold onto the belief distorts a Christian’s ability to clearly read the Bible. He learns to “see” what is not there and boldly state “the Bible says” when it is only his interpretation inposed from without. This habbit makes him vulnerable to other deceptions and especially self-deception.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 6:24amObama gas station….hahaha…..but seriously, nobody said the world would end on 21st….however….it could be the Rapture, (beginning of the end) which the bible does explain very well. “Nations will rise against nations…tornados, earthquakes…”Matthew 24 :7,8. It certainly feels like it…look at Gaza too. In Obama’s book “Audacity of Hope”, Obama says…”When the winds of change happen, I will stand with the MUSLImS.” …Do the math.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 7:31amI have studied This Proposition long and hard, and from the length and depth of it, it at first blush, seems fully supportable; at least I think, by some, as long as it is acceptable, I mean; in which case we should study it more but I need additional funds and a few polls first. Did I answer your trick question?
If you personally believe the proposition, can you please transfer your estate to my campaign? Tonight?

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 8:48ami’m sorry, but this end of the world post has some of THE funniest comments i’ve ever read on The Blaze. from the serious arguments of whether you agree or don’t agree, to people saying they “have roasts in the freezer and now who [are they] going to feed them to” to the guy saying he’s glad the worlds ending because “[he] just ran out of food stamps” … BWAHAHAHAAH!! The Blaze readers are some of the coolest people alive. Keep ‘em coming!! At least if the world DOES end Saturday, we have enough here to keep us entertained until then…

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 9:34amThis guy is a lunitic. The bible clearly states that no one besides god will know when the world will end and if you read through the bible it does give you little hits. Stuff to look for going on in the world, but don’t try to predict it (with a specific date) cause you’ll be wrong. It’s one thing to say “well christ will probably return in the next 50 years or so” but it’s another thing to say “He will return tomorow”. In short don’t try to predict it.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 11:26amJesus spent a LOT of time talking about His 2nd coming, it is prophecied far more then His 1st coming. So we know He will return, meaning every day it is closer. He explained why we can’t know the exact time:
Matt 24:43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.
But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
We can’t know the time because God wants us to ALWAYS be prepared and ready to meet Him. He doesn’t want us to live sinful lives and then say “Jesus will be here Saturday, hurry we must clean up and behave ourselves so He will find us righteous!”

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:00pmHere is something I have been wanting to say for a long time. Some of ya’ll people who hit the reply button instead of the comment button reminds me of people who cut into lines. Usually the ones who post are either making a joke or commenting and not replying to a comment. You just want to be in front. We need to give ya’ll a name. Get in line. Don’t get raptured away.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:37pmEvacuation theology is wishful thinking like so many other things made up by people teaching to those with itching ears.
Report Post »The purpose of the tribulation in the last days is to bring people to repentance and to humble them so that they will seek after God. Do you have no need for repentance? Really? Your in possession of the complete truth? I doubt it. As dates like Saturday pass it will become more evident to those that thought they were going to be evacuated that it is a false doctrine.
Some will repent and some will not. When it says that it will be as in the days of Noah it says two will be grinding at the mill and one will be taken and the other one left what does that mean? Well who was taken? The wicked one!!! The righteous one was left behind. So you may not want to be wishing to be one of the “Evacuated” ones. As in the days of Noah the wicked will be taken. Repent and be one of the ones that is left.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 1:05pmIt is amazing how little this man understands of the Daniel prophesy of the 70 weeks of years. There is still one week of years left, or 7 years on the Israel time clock. If he could rightly divide the Word of God, then maybe he wouldn’t make Christians look like fools.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 8:21pmThe Attorney General should declare this man criminally insane. He has influenced miserable fools to deplete their life savings to support his radio organization, thus abandoning their own families. If he really believes himself, he should be kept on suicide watch. He’s a gobal menace.
