‘Slut Walk’ Protests Take America By Storm…or Something

BOSTON (AP/THE BLAZE) — This social movement really gets around.

An international series of protests known as SlutWalks, sparked by a Toronto police officer’s flippant comment that women should avoid dressing like “sluts” to avoid being raped or victimized, is taking root in the United States. The Blaze initially reported on the Toronto protests here, and then later reported on the Texas Slut Walk here.

Slut Walk Protests Take America By Storm...or Something

Some women and men who protest dress in nothing more remarkable than jeans and T-shirts, while others wear provocative or revealing outfits to bring attention to “slut-shaming,” or shaming women for being sexual, and the treatment of sexual assault victims.

“It was taking the blame off the rapist and on the victim,” said Nicole Sullivan, 21, a student at the University of Massachusetts-Boston and an organizer of the SlutWalk planned Saturday in that city. “So we are using these efforts to reclaim the word ‘slut.’”

The police officer made his comments in January to a group of York University students at a safety forum. He later apologized, but his comments were publicized widely on Facebook and Twitter. They inspired a march in Toronto last month that drew more than 3,000 people, as well as SlutWalks since then in Dallas, Asheville, N.C., and Ottawa, Ontario.

In addition to Boston, marches are planned in cities including Seattle; Chicago; Philadelphia; Reno, Nev.; and Austin, Texas.

“The event is in protest of a culture that we think is too permissive when it comes to rape and sexual assault,” said Siobhan Connors, 20, of Lynn, Mass., another Boston organizer. “It’s to bring awareness to the shame and degradation women still face for expressing their sexuality … essentially for behaving in a healthy and sexual way.”

The events are similar to “Take Back the Night” rallies and other marches that aim to bring attention to sexual violence. But there are key differences.

SlutWalkers have danced to hip-hop, worn T-shirts with the word “slut” and held signs that read “sluts pay taxes.” Some women have skated around on Rollerblades in lingerie, while their male supporters wore shirts reading, “I love sluts.”

The rallies typically end with speakers and workshops on stopping sexual violence and calling on law enforcement agencies not to blame victims after sexual assaults.

In San Francisco, SlutWalk organizers want to make their protest a family event.

“Singles, couples, parents, sisters, brothers, children, friends,” the SlutWalk SF BAY Facebook page announces. “Come walk or roll or strut or holler or stomp with us.”

Connors said organizers had initially planned for about 100 people to attend the Boston event; by Thursday, more than 2,300 had responded to a Facebook shout-out. Another 2,000 people have similarly committed to attend the SlutWalk Seattle on June 19.

“Everything happened organically,” Sullivan said.

The officer who made the comments, Constable Michael Sanguinetti, was disciplined but remains on duty, Toronto police spokesman Mark Pugash said Thursday.

“We said at the time that his comments were entirely unacceptable, that they didn’t reflect in any way what we train and teach our people,” Pugash said.

Pugash wouldn‘t comment on the movement the officer’s comments have spawned.

The Boston SlutWalk group has had to delete several “inappropriate comments” about women and faced criticism from a group that promised to organize a counter “Pimp Walk” in Boston, Connors said.

“We think it was put there as a joke, but it’s disturbing that a number of young people still feel that way,” said Connors, referring to sexist comments left on the page.

Pages dedicated to other cities’ SlutWalks also deleted inappropriate comments.

Connors said the Boston SlutWalk will proceed from the Government Center to the Boston Commons.

Imagine how much good could be done if these people were to harness the energy of these ridiculous events and put it into…I don’t know…helping the homeless. Or teaching abstinence (it works every time it is tried). Or helping the tornado victims. Or helping the earthquake victims. Or teaching the children in Detroit to read. For that matter, helping Detroit to rebuild. All this wasted time, energy, money and untapped talent is going to whatever alienation du jour of the day. It’s time to start helping one another and stop this “poor me” crap. YOU LOOK RIDICULOUS!!

Blaming women for being raped is like blaming every victim of theft. It is your fault for having something the other person wanted. They’ve been teaching us for years, don’t fight back just give the bad guy what he wants. God forbid you make him break a nail and sue you for damages.

Ever wonder why our laws are so lenient on sexual predators? Think about who makes our laws and how many times they have been shown to be deviants, then correct that number by how under-reported sex crimes are.

My home town used to be known for the world’s tallest free standing structure. The CN Tower held the record for 34 years beginning in 1976. And the world’s first retractable roof stadium (Rogers Center formerly Skydome). Ironically, Toronto women have a reputation for being somewhat cold and unapproachable.

working in the public schools, you see it starts pretty early. How mothers allow their daughters to dress mystifies me. Baby butt-cracks abound every where you look, some with thong underwear visible. And we are talking grammer school. It gets worse as they get older. And don‘t think it isn’t a distraction to the opposite sex. I am a staunch supporter of school uniforms and separate classes for boys and girls. I would not send a child to a public school. Sorry. I homeschooled my children as well. They work, they are well-mannered, very well respected in church and hang with a good group of people. I, like you, have never seen it as a prison. On the contrary, I got to be there with my children during their formative years; most parents can‘t or don’t. I saw this as a blessing because I and their Dad was an influence in their lives. We taught them right from wrong; something that is woefully lacking nowadays. I wouldn’t trade those years for anything or for any amount of money.

I feel sorry for your four kids, then. Apparently their mother and teacher can’t read the concept of the “slut walk” and understand the point of it. Nevermind the fact that you’re teaching children when your own English is lacking, but the fundamental goal of the “slut walk” is to shut down the talk that it’s WOMEN who are to blame for rape. You should support that. It‘s never a woman’s fault that some sociopath sexually molests her.

There are two separate issues here. It is wonderful that you are raising your children not to dress badly. However, dressing badly is never an excuse to rape someone. In every case of rape, the rapist is the one at fault. It would not matter if the woman was walking around topless. That still doesn’t give ANYONE the right to rape them.

If we start telling women what they can and cannot wear without “asking” to be raped, where does it stop? A Burka? Lets avoid that path.

If you do that, you used poor judgement, but poor judgement is not a crime. The person who robbed you is still a criminal and still the one at fault. What if, instead of a $10k suit and a Rolex, we change that to a pair of Nike shorts and some Air Jordans. Are you still “asking” to be robbed? People were killed for air Jordans when they first came out. Does that mean we have to dress in rags to go outside to avoid “provoking” robbers?

Hold on now. Isn’t it politically correct to treat any woman who shows her legs above the ankles, or her arms above her hands like a whore? Oh, sorry, that’s Islam. I’m all for women dressing like women not a bag of potatoes. A woman is NOT responsible for how some jerk looks at her nor if he acts on his twisted desires. Get over it, women can dress however they want, well, … unless they are muslim. Why is it that they are so embarrassed about how their women look. Ok, so I’m off subject, but so are many on here.

Dressing in tight clothing that revels a lot of skin is done to be noticed by the opposite sex. It is part of flirting and invites sexual advances. Some men simply do not take no for an answer when the dress is saying yes. It is like why are you asking for sex if you don’t want it. But the fact is a woman does not have to dress “sexy” to get those advances. My issue is why do women think they have to dress like a slut to get noticed? I guess if you want a slut it makes it easier to find them.

When you dress like a slut, it says “hey look, I’m a crack-addicted ****** who won’t call the cops”…

The cop has a very good point…

      God help us!

How stupid do they have to be to walk around like a slut…. and be proud of it!?

No matter how a woman dresses, they should not be raped, but take a quick look around you ladies. The world is going crazy, so don’t be surprised if some nut-case can’t control himself because he can practically see all your goodies. Think ladies…. THINK!

They are wasting their time (and everyone else’s) protesting a comment that was retracted and apologized for. Instead they should be protesting violations of women’s rights under Sharia law. Burying a woman up to her neck and stoning her to death for reporting a rape is a whole lot more serious than a careless comment about women’s clothing.

Liberals are completely boneheaded when they say that our culture is “permissive of rape”. Really? Anyone want to take a poll: “Rape: A) For or B) Against” and see how that turns out?

With the exception of Momprayn on here (oh, the irony) I’ve never met someone who blamed the victim for a rape. And I don’t believe a SlutWalk will be the sort of thing to change her mind. Maybe she should pray more, eh?

If anything, it seems too easy to accuse men of being rapist these days. See for example the Duke Lacrosse and Julian Assange cases. I’m no Assange fan, but there was clearly no rape. And yet he’s going to be extradited and charged for it anyway, in a case of jilted-lover-revenge.

The SlutWalks are not about the right to act and dress slutty. They are trying to make the point via exaggeration that authorities often blame women for being assaulted because they looked sexually attractive. That could mean as little as wearing a stylish short skirt, high heels, tight fitting designer jeans, a shirt that shows cleavage, or just having a very pretty face. God help us all if we push women to dress like Muslim women so that we can keep our testosterone under control.

Please leave all the beautiful flowers alone and let them be as attractive as they wish without shame, guilt, or assaults.

      JOHNZIRALDO are really this naive???

“You go in the cage”, “the cage goes into the water”, “the sharks in the water” ; “farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu to the ladies of Spain”.

No matter what theories are out there. More than 25% of the men in the world, think women have zero rights; much less the right to say NO. You chum the cultural water, then jump in, you will get eaten. Facts are facts.

The police are making the mistake of assuming rapists only go after women who are dressed in a sexy manner. Sorry, but that doesn’t explain 80 year old grandmothers. Or women who are dressed in a non-sexy manner. It isn’t a matter of what you wear; it is a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
