Watch Beck Take His Message to Canada’s Sun News: ‘Best Way to Solve Poverty Is to Make People Uncomfortable in it’

Glenn Beck Appears on Sun News in Interview With Brian Lilley

Sun News host Brian Lilley

On Wednesday night, Canada’s Sun News aired a special one-on-one interview with Glenn Beck. Host Brian Lilley delved into a plethora of issues surrounding Beck’s standing with the liberal media and his take on the socio-political schema.

From debunking media claims against the popular radio and television host to discussing issues of prime importance, Lilley and Beck had a robust discussion.

In an introduction for the special program, Lilley, host of “Byline,” defended Beck against some of the claims that have been waged against him by the mainstream media. He said, in part:

“The liberal media thinks Glenn Beck is crazy. They don‘t like him and they don’t like his message. I promise you this, though: If you like my message, smaller government, pro-family, pro-liberty, standing up for the little guy that’s just trying to do his best each and every day to scrape by, well if you like that message, then you‘ll like Glenn’s message.”

Lilley went on to call Beck “genuine, warm and engaging.” Watch the introduction to the special program, below:

During the interview, the two media figures discussed Israel, the Greek financial crisis, Jesus, charitable giving and plenty more. As Beck described the notion that society must take care for those who cannot care for themselves, he also invoked Ben Franklin in, saying that “the best way to solve poverty is to make people uncomfortable in it.”

He also had a powerful message for churches in America, urging them to remind congregants that it is a personal responsibility to help those who are less fortunate.

It is impossible for God to create inperfection. That was Satan‘s doing’s.When he tempted Adam

and Eve he turned God’s greates creation Man into inperfection. It was like Satan injected a virus into

Good interview. O’Reiley couls learn something here. Everytime he interviews Glenn Beck He interupts him when he’s trying to make a much needed point, and if you were to pay close attention to him, you will notice he in a smug, sly kind of way dismisses his point.

Liberal media does not think Beck is crazy, they want others to think it because he is telling on them for being the liars, deceivers and worthless bunch of Marxist/Socialists they are. He is showing light on them like a bunch of dark living vermin. They do not like that they are exposed.

I will say this: Houses were way too expensive for their value before the fall of real estate. Those on Wall Street were and are theiving. The poor are theiving, the rich are theiving. The government is theiving and that leaves the honest people to try to operate in a world of thieves, many with no jobs or income. Now we know where all of this is going to go. Obama is setting this country up to cave in on itself. Obama is on a mission and that is to destroy this country. If some relief to this is not forthcoming soon, society will no longer operate in a civilized manner. Obama is even causing farmers not to be able to grow food. This is a madman. This man and those who follow him will pick up and leave for another country with all the loot they can transfer before they are jailed.

I cannot understand why the Canadian taxpayer is still shelling out 1.1 Billion dollars annually to fund the CBC – that useless left wing propaganda outfit which broadcasts all over Canada.
What a waste. You would never see a fair and honest description of Glenn Beck and what he stands for there. In fact would would never see or hear a fair and honest anything at the CBC.

So you think Beck “has the priveledge to avoid poverty”. Surely you know nothing of his life story. He has worked unceasingly to get where he is today. He has EARNED every penny. He has not gotten where he is by resting on his laurels and taking handouts from the government.

@Trifactor: I know exactly what you mean. You can preach and beg family members to wake up and take some responsibility for themselves and their children and become more self-sustaining adults–to no avail. They have been coddled and given money hand-over-fist all their growing up lives and cannot comprehend having to do something to dig themselves out of the pit they fallen into by self design.

Glenn Beck is the best thing to happen to media and the conservative movement in this generation if they would only pay attention and learn what it means to be a stand-up person with integrity and self-respect.

      @TRIFACTOR
Just because they have poor fiscal sense doesn‘t mean they aren’t impoverished. The thing about poverty, is that it influences one’s economic decisions–one cannot always AFFORD the luxury economic efficiency (i.e. buying in bulk, etc.) when one’s bottom line is AT rock bottom. And that‘s not even talking about the issue of how socioeconomic class intersects with just about every other facet of one’s live, from education, to health, to job opportunities, to opportunities for leisure and travel, to places where you can live, and on and on and on. Some may escape it, but you cannot deny the life is much easier for those who NEVER HAD TO ESCAPE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Poverty degrades the human condition–the only way to end poverty is to end the CAUSES of poverty in the first place. It will not be solved in a day, a year, or even a lifetime. But if REAL equality of opportunity, freedom from the fetters of poverty, is granted to all, people WILL choose a life of liberty from economic bondage EVERY TIME. This does not mean some will not be wealthier than others–what it DOES mean, is that NONE will be LESS materially endowed than a certain baseline standard NECESSARY to be a human. Participation in human society PRESUPPOSES a certain level of socioeconomic resources–when people lack these, they are marginalized, i.e. separated (whether intentionally or not makes no difference to consequence), from the greater society, much to our loss.

I have many hard working poor friends and family–I don’t know any out and out freeloaders, Although I know theyre out there…
I like to concentrate on the GOVERNMENT who got us where we are today>>>instead of fighting each other in a class war….we have enough to fight each other over and we need to put the blame where the blame is MOSTLY due!
We are headed towards a TWO class system=Rich and Poor.

The reason we got here is NOT primarily the fault of lazy people…IMO it is PRIMARILY the fault of government INTERFERENCE with the economy and Capitalism. I don’t think anybody is denying that Beck worked hard to get where he is. So did Oprah, Hannity, Bill Gates, and many others. The more money you make, the easier it is to make more money. Upward mobility is something for past generations…(your odds were much better some years ago) of the MILLIONS of people in the US it is a handful who have an Oprah or Glenn rags to riches story. I haven’t been able to do it yet because I find as I climb–I come to a gate that I cannot open unless I am willing to compromise a principle or two. Im okay with it. Money has a purpose–Mostly to help other people–but it shouldn’t be what defines us.

People in poverty often have the same “stuff” people not in poverty have. They value entertainment and often have the best electronics. I’ve visited Head Start families in poverty and was shocked to see huge speakers, TV’s etc. Of course, the kids had no beds tho”. My “free lunch” students all had cell phones, top tier cable, and rented lots of movies. This is not what most people think of when they think of poverty. If people are truly in poverty, we should use barracks or unused motels to give them places to sleep; have on-site dining rooms and necessary clothes. We can offer child care and job training, but NO money. People would be fed, clothed, and sheltered. If they wanted more, they could get a job, leave, and earn what they wanted. I wonder how many of the people currently “in poverty” would be happy with that?

      @GIRLNURSE
On the contrary, the reason is PRECISELY because of government interference, but not in the way you think it does. The political system’s NATURE is to have a structural interaction with the institutions of society and the economy they generate. If the government vanished tomorrow, capitalism would be the FIRST thing to go with it. Because capitalism, i.e. the economic system characterized by dominate private ownership of capital goods, i.e. the goods used to produce other goods and services, depends upon the government for its existence, safety, security of and access to its markets, legal structure, rules and enforcement, and so much, much more. And it is PRECISELY because capital good ownership is commodified, abstracted from the process of production, and gambled upon in a vast global casino by handful of, mostly men, where, like every casino, a handful take home the whole pot of winnings. Only in this casino–there’s no one running the casino making the real winnings of the exorbitant waste. It’s just gratuitous externalities, offenses to the public interest and welfare, lives wasted and lost, or condemned to suffer in dehumanizing poverty all so a few can win insurmountable sums of money in a high stakes game at the expense of everyone else. If this is allowed, those with the most wealth will only continue to become wealthier faster–it is mathematically impossible for EVERYONE to have the proportional purchasing power as capitalists.

Umm…poverty means “below a certain net worth.“ Anyone ”not in poverty“ is above the net worth of some ”in poverty”–that is a tautology. Also, you are comparing consumption to income, which is not the same thing. And yes, the poorer you are the more of your income you are likely to spend, thus the higher your marginal propensity to spend.

      @SUSIE
I know who he was quoting, idiot–that’s a cute piece of ancient anecdotal evidence from Franklin, I expect better from him usually. I also don’t expect to take advice on 21st century socioeconomics from someone who lived in the 18th century long before the rise of modern corporate capitalism.

Yep, spouting Communist propaganda is really hard work, Archon. You could practically copy/paste your thought process from the WWP website. That’s some really original thinking “poor people aren’t at fault for their bad decisions, they make bad decisions because they’re poor…”

Woah, your circular logic is making me dizzy. I’m poor because I make bad decisions, but I make bad decisions because I’m poor.

How do you explain the millions of people in America who work their way up through the quintiles, Archon? By your “reasoning”, all people should spiral into poverty the moment they make a bad decision. How’s it feel to have the most simplistic outlook on life and humanity?

And there was a 35 percent increase in government spending as a portion of GDP”.

Now that was 5 years ago….mulitiply that by 5 and you think we passed a “tipping point”?

Taken from The Writings of Benjamin Franklin: London, 1757 – 1775:

“I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. — I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”

And the way to do that is to tie community service to every welfare check. I.E. school lunch monitor, crossing guard, maintenance of government housing projects, shoveling snow for the local seniors, picking up litter and cigarette butts. 30 confirmed hours of this work for your check will quickly encourage you to find something better. Additionally, for people under 35 training and education should be a component. Proof that you are working on your GED would be a good thing to do as well.

MCSLEDGE: Im not exactly sure what you are saying but to clarify my position a little:

I believe the government is MOSTLY to blame for the state we are in NOW.
I believe the people are to blame to the extent that they have left their first love (God) and allowed Progressives to inflitrate the schools, institutions, et al. Basically become passive.
Government makes it HARDER to be an upstanding, working citizen in this country. Government guides people toword the path of least resistence…they make it very difficult to get a decent job but easy to get unemployment and other benefits. Immigration is out of control when we don’t have jobs for people who are here now-then they give special priliges to minorities and foriegners. ALL of that needs turned around. Ive been around long enough to see the “change”.

One Example: In the old days you walked in, talked to the manager filled out a form and they hired you (many times on the spot)
      Now days:
Get online and fill out papers
Leave your # and hope someone calls
      Set up appt. for interview
      Make a proper resume
      Get references together
      go to interview
hand in papers-schedule a second interview
      After checking ALL references
      If hired
      Pass physical examination
      Get current tb
      Pass background check
      credit report
      sometimes driving records from dmv
      first day of work:
ALL day at computer doing sexual harrassment training, etc.

Exrepublisheep – Christ called for men to care for the widows and fatherless and those in need. His servant Paul later made it a point that those who are able should work to provide for their own needs (including their family’s needs). He went so far as to say that he who does not work should not eat. Did the Apostle Paul contradict his master, Jesus Christ? No!

There are those who stand in need because they cannot help themselves. These need help from individuals like you and me. There are others who stand in need who can help themselves if they put forth the effort. Benjamin Franklin called out this party. Only one lacking common sense and lacking a conviction for personal accountablity would argue otherwise.

You seem to find conflict in the statement. I was pointing out that it is the ‘personal responsibility’ of people to to help the less fortunate, not the ‘government’s responsibility’. People are more apt to be grateful to a ‘person’ who helps them and more demanding if it is a ‘government’ agency helping them.

Also the word ‘responsibility’ is not the same as ‘compulsion’. I would rather live in a town where there are no needy among us because of each person’s willingness to be charitable than in a town where the people are forced to contribute. Attitude is everything.

I am more than pleased with Sun’s product; having a channel that validates and represents my own views is refreshing, as I have not had that EVER in this country.

I love how progressives jump off the deep end as soon as views they don’t agree with are presented. They cannot handle the diversity, I guess ! LOL

Absolutely false. The Wildrose party had a huge lead in the polls up until a week or two before the election and the only reason they went back to the PCs at the last minute was the specter of a minority government with the NDP(commies) holding the balance of power. Get your facts straight.

By any measure Sun TV has been a huge bust.

According to recent reports in the Canadian press, between Aug. 31, 2011 and March 31, 2012, 0.1 percent of Canadian viewers watched the network, equal to one-fourteenth of the CBC’s audience and one-ninth of those tuning into American CNN. So 9 times more Canadians watch CNN than STV.

The sets are very stale and look like leftovers from Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. Canadians love news, but the STV style is just so over-the-top. A lot of the programming is similar to what you might see on the Daily Show, only they aren’t in on the joke.

By the way, Alberta is becoming more and more liberal. Calgary actually has a 40 year old Muslim mayor, Naheed Nenshi, who actually has a masters degree from (OMG) Harvard School Of Government.

That’s like Noam Chomsky being the mayor of Huston Texas.

I didn’t watch or listen to the introduction. I did ‘listen’ to the interview, however. I thought it was excellent, and found Mr. Beck’s point-of-view acceptable, and applicable, across the range of topics.

That same philosophy should be applied to our prison systems. So many commit crimes because they can live for free in prison.

Well, my experience in Baltimore, MD is that many poor people are uncomfortable being poor, but they have no true leaders to show them how to get off the dole.

Sorry, but I work with drug addicts who have been ‘unemployed’ for, in some cases, decades. they are not uncomfortable.
      Their standards are low.
They are given a place to get out of the rain, given food or the means to buy their food, given free cell phones and minutes, given free computer access, given free or money to pay for cable, given the money to buy televisions to hook up to the cable, given drug treatment (more drugs BTW), are given debit cards loaded with our tax dollars so they can buy junk food for their kids at Royal Farms, and they, literally, spend their lives running from one study to the next study, earning money for smokes and more drugs.
Not once do they have to look anyone in the eye as they *take* from someone else.
Not once are they made to feel as if they should NOT be taking from other people as they lounge around screwing and doing drugs.
The discomfort is not living in drab, filthy, low quality housing and wearing hand me down clothes, although most are *very* well dressed. Their standards are too low to give a darn about these things b/c they have all of their animal needs met.
The discomfort *should* be the shame, something our society has worked very hard to eradicate, with the best of intentions and the worst results, the shame of living like animals on hand outs from people who know they are better than they are.

Not everyone can get out of poverty. I’m sick of you multimillionaire radio personalities telling me how easy it is to make it in America. Not all of us can sit behind a $100 Million contract and scold others about being poor. It’s not always a choice to be poor. I have a 4-year degree and 6 yrs of professional experience and I have applied for well over 350 jobs in the last 2 months. The only offers I have received are part-time and paying barely over minimum wage. Capitalism has now hit the point where you have to either sell your soul and become a deceitful commission based salesman or you can take a job that nobody can truly live on that is setup as part time just to avoid overtime and benefits. I am losing faith in capitalism daily. There are many good things about it, but the evil side has shown its ugly face and the rich are hoarding and getting richer while throwing out scraps to the fools who are willing to accept such ridiculously low wages. It is not sustainable.

Your post reminds me of the old stock footage from the USSR, pretty bleak picture and outlook. I would not take what Beck says as scolding, rather he started at the bottom and made it, so why can’t you at least to some degree.

My friend, I know your pain. But you need to know that capitalism is being made to look bad, when it is actually what grew our country to a super power and allowed many of our citizens to become wealthy and create enterprises that employed millions and furthered development, so to lose faith in such a system is to ignore our history. I am not saying there are not bad people who rose to power, our original constitution was created to allow growth, yet by the grace of God to curb such monopolies. We have lost God and therefore our enemies prevail.

To make this short I refer to “None Dare Call It Treason…25 Years Later” chapter 20. Please read it my brother so that you will have understanding.

And you are uncomfortable in it and will work hard to find a job to get out of it. That’s what he was saying. You are the commendable one, you are the one who will make it. But for every one of you there are a thousand who make no effort because they are comfortable living on someone else’s hard earned money. Those are the ones who need to be made uncomfortable.

      @SIXFRIGATES

Economics is about choices. the more money you have, the more choices you havr; the less money you have, the less choices.

People today have become convinced that they NEED a cell phone, HDTV, cable, internet, etc. Those are WANTS, not NEEDS.

If you have to give up some luxuries to afford food, then you are not poor. If you can’t buy food you are poor.

Not everyone has enough money to have everything they want, but very few people have too little money to buy what they need.

SIXFRIGATES: I totally agree! I wont put my story here (too much to type)…but I have similar experiences. One example I will give: I have been an RN for over 20 years and worked everywhere..I have seen the hospitals become more and more like slave laborcamps giving us more and more people to take care of and not even the time to have a proper discussion with a patient. Now guess what? We have MANY unemployed nurses and new grads who can’t get jobs–yet the CEO’s are making trips to the philippines to bring back nurses. Why? Because they can pay them less and they will do ANYTHING without talking back. Dont even think about saying americans are lazy. I KNOW better! They like to do a QUALITY job! Look at craigslist at some of the jobs…they expect SLAVE LABOR for 8-10 dollars an hour. Something happened to Capitalism! This is NOT your fathers Capitalism! And I too am sick of millionares saying we are lazy! I heard Hannity say something to that effect the other night–bragging about how he works 15 hours a day. You call that work?! Being pampered all day with makeup people and assistants?! Gimme a break! I am not afraid to say the emperor has no clothes. Call it what you want…Ive done it all and Ive been around long enough to know–things CHANGED (and not in a good way).

Follow the bread crumbs and understand that capitalism only works when government is not in charge of it. Supply and demand are the cornerstone for such a system where the consumer/citizen always wins but government has taken some of the supply and demand and set a price point where the market usually assigns such a number. Capitalism is the definition of a strong private sector void of needless regulations where you get what you work for. Your efforts to get a job are felt by millions and I sympathize with you as I have lost 2 jobs and been unemployed for too long between jobs. Just look at the actions of government and realize that they have the power to take everything over and are slowly doing so thus the private citizen is losing faith and not trying to expand thus you aren’t finding a job. Don’t blame capitalism on the basis you are unemployed, blame the government for indirectly causing this recession by promising unsustainable measures to which we are seeing the fallout now. Good luck!

I do understand your plight but let me tell you a little story…My ex father-in-law showed up in a new city with $3500.00, a wife and 3 children, and a beat up station wagon. He found a place to live, opened up a small store and proceeded to work 18 hours a day. He had his 2 older sons pass out flyers to advertise the new store. He had great ideas, found a niche market for himself, lived frugally, and reinvested every penny. This was in 1976. By 1981, he was a millionaire. By 1989, he was a multi-millionaire several times over. He always lived frugally and instilled hard work in children. Keep in mind that he did this when our country was in a recession, and right when he was on the cusp of “making it”, the government wanted to tax (in a number of ways) every additional penny he made. That first million was really tough when in total, he was paying out close to 70% of his income in taxes. Thank God for Reagan! It’s been over 20 yrs since I was a part of that family but I have taken those lessons and work ethic with my throughout my life. You may have to work job(s) that you don’t like (I’ve had 3 at one time!) until you find your niche or work your way up! It can be done!

“Best Way to Solve Poverty Is to Make People Uncomfortable in it”
    —————————————————————————————-
No truer words were ever spoken, as I tried being nice to my wife’s brother, who, out of a job, slept on our couch. This guy has no manners, no sense of propiety, is racist, and I thought was a bad influence on my kids, not to mention he was staining my carpet and keeping me awake at night. I finally decided to start fighting fire with fire. I tried to keep him awake (hard to do when he stays out all night, comes home and sleeps all day while I am working.) I would drop subtle hints all the time.
He was on unemployment and was one of those people that Obama gave 99 weeks to. He lied every time he sent in his unempoyment form, saying he was looking for a job. This was a freakin’ vacation for him, as whenever he would make money, he would go out and party or go to a casino. Finally, we started making more and more rules for him and he finally moved out. He moved out at the end of May, but his stuff is still at our house. I told him that if it isn’t out by the end of the month, it was going out to the front porch.
I am 42% disabled and trying my best to still keep working and I have to deal with the likes of him?
