‘Tis the season for… homoerotica?
That‘s the apparent theme of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery’s Christmas season exhibition. According to CNSNews.com, the federal funded gallery’s exhibit features “images of an ant-covered Jesus, male genitals, naked brothers kissing, men in chains, Ellen Degeneres grabbing her breasts and a painting the Smithsonian itself describes in the show‘s catalog as ’homoerotic.’”
The exhibit, “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,” opened on Oct. 30 and will run throughout the Christmas Season, closing on Feb. 13.
“This is an exhibition that displays masterpieces of American portraiture and we wanted to illustrate how questions of biography and identity went into the making of images that are canonical,” David C. Ward, a National Portrait Gallery (NGP) historian who is also co-curator of the exhibit, told CNSNews.com.
According to the museum itself, the exhibit shows a commitment to “showing how a major theme in American history has been the struggle for justice so that people and groups can claim their full inheritance in America’s promise of equality, inclusion and social dignity… These themes, historic and artistic, come together in ‘Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,’ the first major exhibition to examine the influence of gay and lesbian artists in creating modern American portraiture.”
“‘Hide/Seek’ chronicles how, as outsiders, gay and lesbian artists occupied a position that turned to their advantage, making essential contributions to both the art of portraiture and to the creation of modern American culture,” a plaque posted at the exhibit states.
The Smithsonian’s annual budget is $761 million, with $495 million being contributed by American taxpayers via federal government funds. According to a Smithsonian spokesperson, the National portrait gallery received $5.8 million in federal funding during fiscal year 2010, although the Smithsonian notes that taxpayer dollars are not used to pay for individual exhibits, including the “Hide/Seek” exhibit.
CNSNews.com describes a portion of the exhibit — two videos shown on a television screen as part of the “Hide/Seek” piece:
“The Pink Narcissus” is a video released in 1971 by James Bidgood (b. 1933). The National Portrait Gallery’s description for the video says, “The film is a surreal portrait of the youth’s emergence into gay life, his coming out symbolized by the metaphor of a caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly.” The video was originally 71 minutes long, and has been edited down to 7 minutes for display in the museum, according to the description.
“A Fire in My Belly” was created by David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992). The full-length version of this 1987 video, according to the description at the exhibit, is 30 minutes long. The version viewable in the National Portrait Gallery has been edited down to 4 minutes. The description says, “A Fire in My Belly, a compilation of footage largely shot in Mexico, weaves together numerous images of loss, pain, and death into a metaphor for the AIDS epidemic; it concludes in a picture of the world aflame.”
The description speaks of the video artist’s ”poetic, yet furious, condemnation of the way greed, religion, and selfishness conspire to label certain people as outside the scope of our caring.” It also quotes Wojnarowicz, who died of AIDS, as saying, “When I was told I’d contracted the virus, it didn’t take long for me to realize that I’d contracted a diseased society as well.”
The four-minute version of the video shown in the exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery shows, among other images, ants crawling over the image of Jesus on a crucifix, two halves of a loaf of bread being sewn together, the bloody mouth of a man being sewn shut, a hand dropping coins, a man undressing, a man’s genitals, a bowl of blood, and mummified humans.

If their arguments are disproved, they resort to name calling, whiny rants, and quoting long dead philosophers with no relevance to the original subject. They want to seem smart. They want to seem cool. But more than anything, they just want to be noticed. No need to waste your time and energy pointing out the blatant and obvious idiocy of a moron.
Basically… treat progressives and liberals like 7 year olds. They act up when they don’t get enough attention. (I know that’s a little insulting to 7 year olds, but bear with me)
Instead of fighting them online, it‘s better to spend your time researching your country’s history and restoring its republic – something the libs who spend all day in their underwear spamming The Blaze have no idea about. ;-)

It’s true–every library, museum, etc. is going to have something in it that someone doesn’t like. But there is a difference between having something that someone doesn’t like in a collection and displaying something that is intentionally offensive.
I don’t like the Communist Manifesto, but I don‘t mind it being in a library because Marx and Engels weren’t out to intentionally offend anyone, just spreading their ideas. This, however, is different; no one puts a crucifix in ants and not intend to offend Christians. No one puts homoerotic pornography on display without intending to offend people with moral dignity.

There is always someone who is offended by something written or drawn, and freedom includes the right to offend. The Supreme Court has defended Nazi’s marching in front of Jewish people, and that is far worse than the depiction of the cross in the Smithsonian exhibit. By the way, Leonardo da Vinci, the greatest artist to even walk the earth, has drawn highly offensive works of hermaphroditic boys that were intended to offend and have indeed greatly offended many people. This exhibit has every right to exist, the space is there for people to put exhibits in it and if someone pays to put something there they should be allowed to and if you don’t like it, you don’t have to go to it.
There are plenty of other works of art displayed in public museums that have a positive view of Christianity, actually most art has a positive view of Christianity since most of it was created by Christians because most of the country is Christian, a fact that I think makes the availability of an opposing and alternative artistic view even more important.
If you want to talk about defunding the whole Smithsonian institution or this particular building, well that’s a different conversation.

It must be said that I don’t think that any of the Smithsonian institutions will ever be defunded, doing so would likely be political suicide, but another question.
Don’t people who in the GLBT community also pay taxes? and as tax paying citizens, shouldn’t they have every right to use public institutions they also pay for to display their art?

What you are proposing is a false choice. The obvious answer to your question is “yes, lesbians should be able to use their tax funded property,” but the problem isn’t who is using it, but what they’re using it for and if government should be involved in that. I can’t and wont speak for everyone here, but in my opinion there is absolutely no place for government in Art. The Arts can be funded entirely by the private sector and do not require big brother(or sister, if we’re all feeling very progressive) to step in to make people hear a voice no one wants to hear. Again, the problem isn’t the art, it’s the fact that art is being provided by the government. I imagine a lot of the people here would complain about the art even if it had nothing to do with the government, but very few would suggest it being censored.
Side note; why ants? I gotta say, these “artists” really don’t make any sense to me what-so-ever. Maybe their opinion would be more accepted if it wasn’t so obtuse.

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 6:51amThis is why government should not be founding these organizations. It is hurtful to me that my dollars would go to something like this. These groups want to keep the donors happy in this case, the liberals but the liberals do not represent the majority and proportionally we are the majority and that’s why this is an outrage. Is this how you bring people together or simply how you create discord and division?
It will take time before we can remove this cancer. It is funny as a young person and most of my life I have been very tolerant of people with what I considered different orientation. No public money should be used to fund ANY art, of any theme, at all, ever.
The reason people don‘t like this isn’t because it’s “gay”, I suspect, but because their very core beliefs are being smeared and defiled by some crank who is using their money. What they are not doing, if didn’t notice, is running out and killing the artist, or putting a bounty on his/her head, nor are they burning down the museum. I strongly suspect that many Christians are praying in good faith for the soul of the artist.
You have something to learn about Christianity, but I wonder if you’re even interested in doing so?

How do you feel about the concept of “Seperation of Church and State”? I understand your point about the LGBT community paying taxes, thus tax-funded art exhibits at the Smithsonian are just fine. What I do not understand from the Progressive viewpoint is if it is UNACCEPTABLE for the government to promote or have a positive outlook on Christianity, then why is it ACCEPTABLE for the government to support the denigration and insulting art towards Christianity? If these exhibits insulted any part of Islam, they would be labled Islamophobic and never see the light of day. Can you please tell me where I can find a POSITIVE representation of Christianity at a government sponsored art exhibit? Perhaps I need to get out more, but I don’t know of any such places.
If you say anything negative about a person’s lifestyle or set of beliefs, then you are a “hater”…..unless that person is a Christian……is that called “justice” by the Progressives?

the only part of this exhibit that is directly offensive to Christians is the short clip from the short movie of a Crucifix covered in ants, everything else everyone seems to be reacting to is the homosexual themes. I really don’t get it, the artists here are using institutions available to them and are fully in their rights to do so. I think it is great that the federal government provides space for artists to display their work, but it is also good that these artists need to pay their own way into these spaces.
Also, do you really want the federal government deciding what is “appropriate” to be displayed?

It’s not unacceptable to have a positive view of religion, most art does have a positive view of religion, much of the art in publicly funded galleries have religious themes and positive ones. The National Portrait Gallery has displays of Presidents and Civil Rights leaders like Reverend Martin Luther King, they have a permanent exhibit of paintings of the religious and political founders of the nation.
Any art gallery worth its salt has many, many examples of art depicting Jesus and the church in a positive light, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has entire galleries dedicated to the display of Christian iconography and paintings of Christian leaders and saints. Most of art history is about Christianity.
