Snapshots From Inside a Russian Rocket Factory? This Sneaky Photographer Got Them

Russian rocket factories may be tightening their security thanks to one photographer who sneaked into an NPO Energomash factory outside of Moscow, shot dozens of photos and reported on her blog that the place was largely unguarded except for some security cameras.
Gizmodo reports that Lana Sator has been sent letters from authorities for her exploits, stating that if she doesn’t stop posting photos her situation could get “much worse.” But that hasn‘t stopped her and she’s even posted the letters on her blog, according to Gizmodo.
Here are some of her shots from the inside of a factory that designs liquid propellant rocket engines:
Gizmodo explains that while some of the photographs make the plant look abandoned, it is in fact a working factory. According to Gizmodo, the rockets produced at the plant are used by the Russian military and is responsible for creating launch vehicles like the Soyuz, which is known for failing to reach orbit while carrying cargo to the ISS last year. Soyuz did have a successful launch carrying astronauts two months later.
Take a look at more of Lana Sator’s photos of the factory here.

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 1:50pmOh so your point is we still have to worry about Russia. A little paranoid are we. The US accounts for 45% of the military spending in the entire world. But people continue to present some phantom case that we should spend more not less. If you want to know who is raping the American taxpayer in terms of overspending and waste, then start with the military contractors.

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 1:57pmNo. His goal is to dismantle American Armed Forces period. He is preparing USA for the foreign invasion from whoever it will be, China, Russia, Iran, Arabs, South Americans, or all of them together. He couldn’t care less, as long as those American occupants will make him USA governor-general or vice-regent for life.

The real gold to be dug up on these engines is the turbo pumps: size, shape, plumbing, etc etc…
Otherwise, there’s nothing of much value here…

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 6:59pmWell, it’s nice to have pics of what an actual operational rocket factory looks like, since Obama killed our manned space program at NASA. Maybe we can get Burt Rutan to let someone take pics at Scaled Composites, to see what a real, operational, and better yet private American rocket facility looks like?

No JROOK, I am not paranoid. The USA has allowed its ICBMs and SSBMs to age and to dwindle in number. We have actively cut our nuclear warheads and have not deployed any new nuclear warheads or delivery vehicles for 10-15 years. Yes, we DO spend an enormous amount on this nonsensical “peacefare”, but that is the old Vietnam Police Action coming out. (I agree, BTW, that mostly ruthless war profiteers are served with “peacefare” campaigns, not US Security goals.) Whereas Russia has just designed, produced, and FIELDED a brand new ICBM capable of MIRV and boasted by Russia to be able to defeat ANY missile defense system either built or to be built by the USA. These are FACTS, not paranoia. But the Cold War is over, right? Never mind the nuclear proliferation and open saber rattling by both Russia and China, we know the Cold War is over because the Nightly News, the average College Professor, and hippies like you SAID it was over! Right?

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 10:08amTake a close look at the engine in the last photo. Doesn’t that look like a modified V2 engine that the Germans designed 70 years ago? certainly the injection manifold on top and the shape of the combustion chamber are reminiscent. Surely the Russians have moved past parroting the Germans by now! The inability of their German experts ‘imported’ after the last war, to produce single large engines lead to the development of those multi engined designs they have now. Have the Russians gone back to a 70 year old drawing board?
Verner? Actung! Verner. Ist that du?

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 10:22am@TROONORTH,
Heh, heh, so true. The Comms can never accomplish much of anything without stealing the base technology first. Author Tom Clancy has often said that pretty much every piece of military hardware they’ve ever built is pretty much a “death trap”.

Report Post »Most of the weapons of war and rocketry can be traced back to Hitler or Germany the U.S. just got their defecting scientist to come to the U.S. and we built off their technology. Who knows under the Obama regime the new defectors may be going to another country giving them a One up. Besides we probably import from there after all many of our rocket and weapons are not built in the U.S. it is cheaper to outsource the jobs and technology.
JoKerr
Posted on January 6, 2012 at 4:47pmADDLED, you are kind of right. We did borrow some German scientists after the war (Von Braun being the most notable) but look up your history, liquid fueled rocketry began in the 20′s with an American named Goddard. They all stole it from us.
And no, we do not import anything for our military (except maybe oil, and honestly, once it goes into the military stocks it’s all the same), everything that we use is made right here in the USA. That way our military will never be compromised by outside sources who either sabotage our equipment, hold it for ransom/demands, or sell the technology we are using to our enemies so that they know how to defeat us.

Sorry but your ignorance is glaring. I know a man who was an interpreter for our intelligence service who monitored Russian radio transmissions for decades. He can tell you that not only have they had MANY disasters with their space and rocket programs that you will NEVER hear about, he will tell you the worst part of the job was listening to their Cosmonauts burn up during re-entry. And there were many……..I would never trust any Soviet made product to carry me into space. I wouldn’t even trust their airplanes.
