So What Did the Hackers Take in the IMF Attack?

Yesterday we learned that the International Monetary Fund was the victim of a cyber attack. As if that wasn’t scary enough, now Business Insider (via Bloomberg) is reporting what may have been taken during the hack and how it happened. And while details are still sketchy, the gist of the news is not good.
What they took: e-mails and other documents, according to the same someone familiar with the matter.
When they took it: Before Dominique Strauss-Khan, the former IMF chief, was arrested for rape.
How it happened: The IMF is not releasing any details nor are they commenting on the extent of the attack other than to say that the fund is fully functional. However, reading into a memo sent to employees after the attack, we suspect that it might have happened via “phishing” (hackers trying to get access to your password and username) or after an employee clicked on a link or video sent to their email.
The IMF’s Chief Information Officer Jonathan Palmer sent an email to employees with the subject, “Important Notice: Virus Attacks,” on June 8th.
Bloomberg got the memo and says it says: Be on [your] guard. [A] computer at the fund was “compromised.”
“Last week we detected some suspicious file transfers, and the subsequent investigation established that a Fund desktop computer had been compromised and used to access some Fund systems…At this point, we have no reason to believe that any personal information was sought for fraud purposes.”
“Staff are strongly requested NOT TO OPEN emails and video links without authenticating the source…”
In an email sent on June 9th, Palmer warned employees about “increased phishing activity.”
There’s also speculation that the hack was perpetrated by a foreign government. However, as BI points out, it’s also possible it was the work of the infamous hacker group Anonymous.
Read the details here.

Additionally, in my ten 10 years there I observed that women are treated respectfully.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 2:32pmWhom ever got in did so with perpouse. Now the IMF is aware the tatics are going to change to get in to the system or remain in the system. Which in large systems is easyer than in a smaller computer systems, One thing about the WIKI leaks computer files is the hackers got in and dispite the system knowing they kept down loading the information after the hackers program got cut off. That how thousands of pages of info could get out of the computer system they are stored on.
Report Post »Some here may dispute that it can be done but in fact it is very easy that once a hacker gets in the system to stay there. Dispite being cut off the access point a good program can run without notice downloading info to outside computers for as long as the system stays connected. This was very good for a hack and shows someone wanted the files they went after.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:47amThe Dutch believed in the fairy-tale U.S. Patriot Army fighting the Obama Black Brigades (OBB) around the world. The Dutch also knew that OBB promoted the destruction of Israel and were willing to fight all over the world.
Report Post »Once the OBB was damaged by national U.S. elections their troops quickly found the path to the second great civil war in America.
The Obama Black Brigades (OBB) were formed and originally funded by the C.I.A. within the secret multi-billion dollar black budgets. Several divisions were created to defeat terrorists around the world and several divisions were deployed within Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq and smaller units in dozens of countries.
The Dutch would help the U.S. Patriot forces in halting the advance of the Obama Black Brigades and their first test was in building the pontoon bridge across the canal waters only seven miles away from the I.M.F. world headquarters.
Their first job was complete and the main road was now covered with Dutch anti-tank mines and the pontoons were being unloaded off the several Dutch heavy tractors and trailers.
Not one Dutch soldier noticed the lone man standing on the other side of the canal river making his plans to pull the trigger.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:30amThe I.M.F. proved to be no match for the U.S. Patriots but the Obama Black Brigade was another story. The I.M.F. defenses were weak and the informational files were stolen by the U.S. Patriots and miraculously escaped into the woods.
Report Post »The I.M.F. money laundering files were undamaged and transferred to the other side of the world by the U.S. Patriots before the first heavy mortar exploded in the dense woods.
The Obama Black Brigade (OBB) a powerful military force had placed artillery, machine guns and heavy mortars facing the old narrow bridge to defend the I.M.F. and engage the U.S. Patriots.
Escaping injury the U.S. Patriots scrambled through the woods to their vehicles only to discover that they were surrounded on three sides and all hell was about to break loose.
At this point the canal bridge was undamaged but the OBB tanks were now firing at the narrow bridge and the lead recon troops of the U.S. Patriots.
The Patriot sergeant would have to find another way as the first OBB proximity shell exploded directly over his position.
The U.S. Patriots and their small arms might prove worthless but they were going to attach anyway.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:04am@ MidWestMom: they probably have decent or better antivirus software. AV does not protect against phishing or external links that pull in certain worms or viruses.
I am a computer tech by trade, and roughly 30 percent of my job is cleaning up viruses and rootkits that get past AV software. If you think there is a package out there that will stop it all, I have some very bad news for you…

And we’d like you to stay on topic and not post unhelpful links. Oh well, can‘t win ’em all.
I find it funny that one of the first reactions is “Must be Anonymous!” No, Anonymous specializes in three things:
1. DDoS attacks
2. Cats
3. Appearing more important than they are
More likely it was just your run-of-the-mill keylogger than any idiot could open. If it were a direct target, then there would be a lot more danger; but nothing in the article leads to this conclusion.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:38am@INFECTED… I agree. I’m a “hanger on” because I was here on day one and I like the format. The Blaze does a pretty good job of letting me speak without deleting my opinion… very often… So I stay, but I will admit I’m not here as much as I used to be. I think they really dropped the ball on the Bilderberg thing, the attendees and the Logan act. Much of what I see here is just to “stir the pot”… and the Blaze does that very well!

No, cats as in felines. Anonymous primarily operates off of 4-chan. They love them some cats.
As said, a lot of people don’t understand what Anonymous is. They aren’t some shady secret organization of genius hackers. They’re mostly just internet trolls with too much time on their hands and basic internet knowledge of how to publicly humiliate people. DDoS attacks stop websites, or they try and get all information possible on a person they take a disliking to and shame them or make their lives a living hell.
Some of their members have amazing skills when it comes to hacking, but they’re the exception. Most people just want a community to belong to, and thrive on the name recognition of the group.

Since he is funding the defence of Wiki-Leaks founder Julian Assange by supplying him with his Open Society Legal advisor.
