So What Does He Believe? Gingrich Gives Confusing Statements About Individual Mandate

Yesterday, Newt Gingrich supported a “variation” of President Obama’s controversial individual insurance mandate. Today, he opposes the mandate “period.” What changed in 24 hours?

Mediaite’s Jon Bershad gives a narrative here. In short, here‘s what Gingrich told NBC’s David Gregory on“Meet the Press” yesterday when confronted with some past support of the mandate idea:

MR. GREGORY: Now, I know you’ve got big difference with what you call Obamacare. But back in 1993 on this program this is what you said about the individual mandate. Watch.
(Videotape, October 3, 1993)
REP. GINGRICH: I am for people, individuals–exactly like automobile insurance–individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance. And I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance.
(End videotape)
MR. GREGORY: What you advocate there is precisely what President Obama did with his healthcare legislation, is it not?
REP. GINGRICH: No, it’s not precisely what he did.

[...]

REP. GINGRICH: Well, I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay–help pay for health care. And, and I think that there are ways to do it that make most libertarians relatively happy. I’ve said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond…
MR. GREGORY: Mm-hmm.
REP. GINGRICH: …or in some way you indicate you’re going to be held accountable.
MR. GREGORY: But that is the individual mandate, is it not?
REP. GINGRICH: It’s a variation on it.

Watch it here:

Today, he’s singing a seemingly different tune. Gingrich released a YouTube video titled, “Newt: I oppose the Obamacare mandate. Period.” In it, he says, “I am completely opposed to the Obamacare mandate on individuals:”

Yesterday, a “variation.” Today, no mandate “period.”

But those comments aren’t the only ones that has Gingrich in the headlines. He’s also under fire for remarks he made about Rep. Paul Ryan’s plan to fix Medicare. Also on “Meet the Press” yesterday, Gingrich called Ryan’s proposed overhaul “right-wing social engineering“ and ”radical change.” From ABC:

“I don’t think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering,” Gingrich said.  “I don’t think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate.”

Ryan’s plan, part of the GOP budget proposal for 2012, would establish insurance exchanges for older Americans and subsidize their purchase of a private insurance policy based on their income.

Republicans backing the budget say it would help cut the federal budget deficit by $5 trillion over the next 10 years.

That prompted a sharp retort by Ryan.

“With allies like that, who needs the left?” Ryan told guest host Raymond Arroyo on Laura Ingraham’s radio show. “Hardly is that social engineering and radical,” he said. “What’s radical is kicking the can down the road.”

Gingrich’s comments also sparked a response from possible 2012 GOP candidate Rick Santorum.

“For several years, Newt Gingrich has deserved a lot of credit for thinking through a great many issues in a serious and interesting fashion.  But his criticism of Congressman Paul Ryan‘s Medicare reform plan yesterday was a big departure from Speaker Gingrich’s often sound policy proposals,” he said in a statement.  “Contrary to what Speaker Gingrich said yesterday, the Ryan plan does not ‘suddenly impose’ ‘radical change.’”

Welcome to campaign season.

How can anyone compare auto insurance to health insurance? If I want to have the privilege of driving a car in my state I need Insurance to protect You from ME when I am involved in an accident.
Health insurance protects ME from my illness/injury. If I choose to protect myself from myself, I’ll buy health insurance. Progressives are about slavery of the people, whichever party they’re in.

I like Newt, but, I think a West Cain would be hillarius. Watching the Sharpton‘s and the Jackson’s calling them Uncle Tom’s. Only because BO wouldn‘t be able to call them Uncle Tom’s. I wonder if Black Panthers would stop the black folk from voting…..

Other than the hilarious issue with the (uneducated black voter) it’s probably not that good a ticket. However, the uneducated black vote is about 70% of the black vote. That means they’d garner about 1M or so votes from the black folks.

I don’t see how Santoria will win – he couldn’t even win his state senate seat. Lot’s of time to see how if flushes out.

Yeah, I don’t really trust him but I agree with a lot of other things he talks about – but I never thought he’d be a great President. This just confirms it more. He’s too “old establishment ”let’s all get along” type Repub.” – NOT what we need. Rush was saying he thinks these establishment types don’t really think we have a very severe & drastic problem like Tea Party types do. They think it’ll be fine as long as we keep control of the money – same cycle as the past. They’re not really that worried about the nation being “taken down” or anything. Oh well – no, don’t think he gets my vote.

Persons who are insincere (some liars) have a pathological need to say whatever seems popular, and they often cannot keep their acts together.

I used to like Newt, but he’s turning into a RINO, it seems. Then there is the $6,000 in back taxes his business owes in four states.

Draft Allen West for President in 2012!

Gingrich is a fish out of water, he will flip flop around until he’s cooked.

Why is heathcare such a difficult thing. Let’s make it easy. Insurance is a safty net if something goes wrong. If you don’t have insurance then you have to pay 100% out of pocket. No free service and that means you illegals.

Although Mr. Gingrich’s words sound like a contradiction, they are two different parts of a straight forward policy. There can not be a Federal mandate for insurance coverage, but each State may develop their own program, this has been his point of view since “Obamacare” was signed. As far as his statement that all Americans need to participate to pay for health care, he has never advocated we are paying for “everyone’s” health care, but we need to show that we are capable of paying for our own healthcare. There is no debate that a large amount of healthcare’s increase in fees is due to unpaid bills. The responsible candidate for President has to have a plan that will guarantee that each person is able to pay for their healthcare, so “we the people” are not stuck with the bill as we are today. Stop falling for the sound bites, and talking points, and start using your mind to fully understand a policy, and decide for yourself if it is something reasonable.

He‘ll keep on making mistakes if he can’t get out of this coffee shop debate mentality. This is Meet The Press! You don’t have five minutes to make your point however clever it may be. This is a sound bite world and he gave them just what they wanted.

I have to give credit to Revere1 and Elephant Watcher. He called it. Newt’s brains will get in the way of his message.

Major reason of high health care cost is ton of regulations, fees and bunch of other anti-free market stuff, not unpaid bills.

Bye Newt, don’t let the door hitcha, where the good Lord splitcha. You are no longer a “conservative” in my eyes. It is called a Freudian slip, and if we just say, it was a mistake. You don’t say a mistake unless you believe it somewhere in your being.

“REP. GINGRICH: Well, I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay–help pay for health care. And, and I think that there are ways to do it that make most libertarians relatively happy.”

Gingrich, you friggin’ idiot. How can you sit there and tell me (as a long-standing LIBERTARIAN) say that you believe that I have to pay for everyone’s health care in the entire country, and that you can force me to do it in a way THAT I WILL BE RELATIVELY HAPPY?

Relative to WHAT, Ging-Grinch? Relatively happy, as compared to a Communist Serf?

How about this — I pay for my own healthcare and YOU pay for everyone elses, since you want it so bad!

The day you get my “LIBERTARIAN” vote, is the day that HELL FREEZES! Drop out of the race, RINO SOCIALIST! You are in the way!

BLAZERS — DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS GUY. HE IS A THREAT TO YOUR FINANCES AND YOUR LIBERTY! In the second video, he says that he is against the “Obamacare” mechanism; however, he doesnt come clean on that he still believes that YOU should pay for the coverage of others, via higher taxes, through some sort of socialized healthcare.

NEWT should be tuned out and we should be look closer into the RNC and the Republican Party Establishment to see who is catoring to the backing of ALL OF THESE RINOS that have showed up on the policital scene, these past few months.

Something stinks, and its COMING OUT OF THE RNC!
