So What Exactly is the Navy‘s Secret ’SEAL Team 6?’

So What Exactly is the Navys Secret SEAL Team 6?

The alleged shoulder patch for "DevGru."

The news today is riddled with references to the Navy’s elite “SEAL Team 6,” the team being hailed for killing Osama bin Laden. But what exactly is SEAL Team 6? For most people it’s the stuff of Tom Clancy and Brad Thor novels. But in the spy and military world, it is an elite black ops fighting group shrouded in secrets that reports to the president himself.

“Officially, the team’s name is classified and not available to the public,” Business Insider writer Robert W. Johnson reports, “technically there is no team 6. A Tier-One counter-terrorism force similar to the Army’s elusive Delta group, Team 6′s mission rarely make it to paper much less the newspaper.”

He continues:

The members of Team 6 are all “black” operatives. They exist outside military protocol, engage in operations that are at the highest level of classification and often outside the boundaries of international law. To maintain plausible deniability in case they are caught, records of black operations are rarely, if ever, kept.

The development of SEAL Team 6 was in direct response to the 1980 attempt to rescue the American hostages held in Iran. The mission was a terrific failure that fell apart at many points and illustrated the need for a dedicated counter-terrorist team capable of operating with the utmost secrecy.

Johnson explains the name is allegedly an intentional lie that dates back to the time of the Cold War. At the time, there were only two other SEAL teams and the name was meant to confuse the Soviets.

National Journal explains more about Team 6′s name, which is really only a leftover nickname. Now, the group is officially known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. NJ explains who the team reports to and what happens when one of the members is killed:

DevGru belongs to the Joint Special Operations Command, an extraordinary and unusual collection of classified standing task forces and special-missions units. They report to the president and operate worldwide based on the legal (or extra-legal) premises of classified presidential directives. Though the general public knows about the special SEALs and their brothers in Delta Force, most JSOC missions never leak. We only hear about JSOC when something goes bad (a British aid worker is accidentally killed) or when something really big happens (a merchant marine captain is rescued at sea), and even then, the military remains especially sensitive about their existence. Several dozen JSOC operatives have died in Pakistan over the past several years. Their names are released by the Defense Department in the usual manner, but with a cover story — generally, they were killed in training accidents in eastern Afghanistan. That’s the code.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, members of the team don’t apply for the team, the team picks its members.

The highly trained operatives who killed Osama bin Laden are part of a counterterrorism group so specialized that no one can apply to join it.

Instead, they are recruited. They are chosen from existing SEAL teams, making the unit an elite within an elite.

That may be only partly true, though. National Journal says members in general can be recruited from a variety of places including the CIA.

On Monday, Fox interviewed Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA’s bin Laden unit. He explained what exactly Team 6 is, but still retained some of the tight-lipedness of his former job:

Fox also interviewed Gen. Jack Keane to talk about the team:

Again, all the information comes with the “alleged” tag since the team’s work is so secretive and none of its details can ever be confirmed.

“When a former Navy SEAL was called for a comment about this article,” Johnson writes, “all he could say was: ‘You know I’d love to help you man, but I can’t say a word about Team 6. There is no Team 6.’”

For more details on the operation, see National Journal.

NEW FLASH!!!! The latest “Scuttlebutt” (sailor speak for “Rumor Control), is that when his (BIN LADEN) sorry carcass was dumped over the side, that hundreds of sharks immediately appeared and devoured him, I’m thinkin the “DEVIL” was welcoming him to HELL!!! Also heard that the cooks provided 15 frozen hams to weigh the carcass bag down.

THey with EODGRUTWO fall under operational control of SURFLANT unless things have changed since I was w/an EOD unit. “TEAM 6” is altogether different. They are the “spooks” “spook.” They do not work for the Navy…they work for the POTUS.

The 4-month SEAL team mission culminates 4 years of HUMINT exploitation by the fabulous CIA. I mean this sincerely, these are highly coordinated integrated operations that are controlled and perfected and kept quiet at the NS staff level and above. For a variety of reasons, only 0.5% of plans become actual clandestine missions.

Dick Marcinko is the real brainchild behind SEAL team 6. He is the original C.O. and him and the original plankowners of the team have done some great work for our country and the world, much of which may never be made publicly known. Marcinko also came up with the Red Cell team made up of SEAL 6 members who would test our military preparedness by penetrating and testing our military facilities around the world and in the US and also did some other things as Beck touched upon with his comment about “explosive-like” devices found on planes. Several of the plankowners went on to work with CIA’s Counter Terrorist Tactical Team which was co-founded by my stepfather and also included(s) members of DELTA (another non-existent unit) and Force Recon. He has recently retired from the CIA and has a book coming out in a few days. He has told me some funny stories about Red Cell’s methods for penetrating our “highly secure” military bases, including pizza deliveries! Years ago, Marcinko approached him about a business venture, but he declined as he wasnt ready to leave the CIA yet. My stepfather devoted alot of time trying to bring Bin Laden to justice even before September 11, 2001. His team was ready to nab him back in the 90′s, but the mission was scrubbed at literally the last minute by the Clinton Administration, if not by Willie himself. To learn more about SEAL team 6 and Red Cell, I recommend “Rogue Warrior” and “Red Cell” both written by Richard Marcinko. He has also written some fiction, but it has some truth sprinkled throughout.

Any posibility that one or two of these guys are gay?
Somehow I get the feeling one of them will be gay and it will be used to just to make a point.
it has already been planned that way.

I’m confident I know your step father… These men are men of Honor and I’m honored to have served with them…

Another show to visually see a team as this is called “The Unit”… While it may be a simple TV show, it gives a good perspective of the secrecy, risk, and sacrifice we ask of our most elite…

One does not have to be a “SEAL” but all come from the armed forces at their root even if they come directly from the CIA… You start in the forces, can join the CIA and then be assigned to the best of the elite…

These men look just like you and I but these men give up so much without even the ability to mention their efforts. I thank God for the opportunities given to work with these fine soldiers…I pray for their blessings and I pray for them to continue to stay safe… Enjoy your family and downtime soldiers…God bless..

It is not worth the threat to American liberty for the office of the Presidency to come with a personal war unit.

Let’s also not forget about the Ready Reserve Corps. See here.

      @OKIE,
It’s great to run into some folks like you who have worked with him here at The Blaze. Some high quality folks here. Thank you for your service, you have my utmost respect. I just told my stepdad about this site. I’m guessing you might know Mike from original team 6 too if you know my step dad. It was tough growing up with him. He married a mother of 3 kids, and he was strict and we had some differences in those days, but as an adult I have come to respect him more than almost anyone I know. I’m proud to be able to talk with him about these things and man, can he teach some things at the range! I spent 2 hours with him with my 1911 and he did more for my shooting in that time period than everything I had learned before. I consult with him before all firearm purchases to make the most informed decisions from every perspective.

      @OZChambers

Strictness is bread in thru the pain and sweat given and most importantly for love of those strictness is being applied…That strictness was his love to keep you on the narrow, but you know that now and it is honorable of you to speak about it….You verbally recognizing it makes his mission complete….I‘ve never been one to talk much about my time as some things can’t be, openly, and for the most part, I consider myself just doing my job and really never been about getting praise…Of course, most I worked with were the same….In these eyes, it’s our duty, the work and the silence….

Experts is an under statement in regards to the shooters I’ve trained with…As im sure your aware the hardest shot is from the water, and we have many who can shoot that shot with their eyes closed it seems…

The hardest part for me was to train and train with good men who unfortunately did not return from the objective only to see the cover story being released as a simple mechanical failure or pilot error or no mention at all..Not the truth that my partner bringing up our 6, stalled an attack to ensure the missions objective was completed…When your brother lays his actual life down for you, it really makes one think….I found my out and took it and I’ve enjoyed every second of it before and now….I get those occasional phone calls and they make me smile but honestly one can’t beat sitting on the porch with a good cup of brew (coffee) thanking God for allowing one to make it thru….

Keep in mind those things you’ve been taught, they will guide you your whole life more then you can imagine….I will make an effort to get a message to you by means of the hardest intel to crack…Until then, stay alert, stay smart, stay safe!

Snow and others, I got some answers on the DNA question, from the most expert source I know of.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN who is also a neurosurgeon, and also a forensics pathologist.
As you guys remember, he did yeomans work in Haiti, including operating on many of the victims in their surroundings, and also the USS Carl Vinson, which has a hospital aboard.

He was saying that 90% of all DNA are shared by everybody, and 10% is different from other people.
They took the 10% of the DNA from bin Laden’s family members, and when they popped him, they immediately took a sample from him, which matched within a couple hours.
Normally it takes about 2 weeks if you take it all.

So that kinda clears things up that he is in fact dead.
Now for how long, who knows.

If I ever need brain surgery, I’d want Dr. Gupta to do it.

Fortunately Obama’s security clearance was not approved and the War on Terror has been directed all along by the REAL president, George W. Bush. This explains why we are …

      1) still in Gitmo,
      2) Gitmo prisoners will be tried by a military tribunal,
      3) we are still pounding the crap out of the Afghans,
      4) OBL is now fish food,
      5) Pakistan has been caught with their pants down,
      6) We are now in 3 wars,
      7) the large smoking crater where the U.N. once stood (oh wait… this is next week).

Lets hope that Obama keeps pretending to be President… because he doesn’t have the balls to stand up and do the right thing… unless he thinks it will help him get re-elected.

Im calling ******** on this one. Maybe the birth cert is real. I really dont care/never did. And Bin Laden must really be dead because our gov wouldnt be stupid enough to claim that and then have him reappear….or would they? Anyways, What I doubt is that this group exists. This seems like just a way for Obama to claim credit for what he really had nothing to do with. Hell say”see, these guys report directly to me, i told them to do it, i got rid of osama, reelect me” no obama, you had nothing to do with it even if they DO exist. You are such a pansy i bet youve never even been in a fight in your life, let alone a gunfight, let alone the assassination of one of the worlds most wanted men.

Yes! they exist, and I hope all our enemies know they exist. All seal teams on both coasts deserve our thanks, as well as the Marines, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy who made it possible to get so close, find and kill this spawn of Satan! These teams aren’t robots, they are our Sons who take the extra effort to be where they are. I’ve had first hand experience with their training many years ago! The enemy REALLY dosen‘t know who they’ve messed with!

I worked for the Naval Special Warfare Command from 1976-79. This story is mostly right, even the parts that contradict each other. This is a group that includes the Delta Force, which is made up of special operatives fro every branch of the service to SEAL teams, which are made to order, depending on the size of the mission and various X factors. They can range from a 2 man unit for recon purposes to this unusually large group (s) which did this operation. An average SEAL team is made up of 12 Navy specialists, who today crosstrain in the various “arts”, so if one goes down, the mission does not have to be scrubbed. In my time, they trained at various ampib bases, like the one in Little Creek, Va. and Coronado, Ca.

The names of the SEAL teams are real. Members train together for months, and know what every other member likes to eat and what time he goes to the bathroom each day and night. Each mission has different logistics and is made to order. I would guarantee this mansion that was raided had an exact model built to scale to practice the assault drills.

This patch is new to me, but looks like one which a Delta team would have. The SEAL Eagle with anchor in it’s claws on the Airborne Ranger patch. These would be considered less covert than a “ghost” or black ops team, which the CIA may or may not have. If they have their own, why did they use the Navy’s. I spent much time at Langley HQ as a communications tech., but never heard any real stories of CIA black ops people, unless you include the feet on the ground people who get embedded with a community, which Bush put back into action in 2001.

The original UDT SEALS ( underwater demolitions team ), was the idea of the JFK administration in 1961. They have evolved several times since then and are the best. The Green Berets and Rangers will argue that until one of them passes out. These are real people, with minds stronger than their bodies. What they must control, from their temper to their bowels is something to strive for. Good luck with that. As I said previously, the Delta Force is the first and only inter-military sec-ops group that I have been involved with.

As commander and chief, Obama deserves to take some credit for this victory but sadly he is turning this into an opportunity to help him run for re-election. His record alone should be reason enough for EVERYONE not to vote for him in 2012 but unfortunately there are far too many people who hear only the lies that the left-wing media puts forth. It is our job as Americans to make certain that TRUTH & HONESTY are brought back to Washington. If you would like to make a difference and you have 15 minutes of you time to spare, I urge you to email me at rockymtnpatriot@yahoo.com. I have written an “Open Letter” to the president that if circulated properly WILL make a difference in the direction this country is heading. If you really want to help make a difference, please send me an email.
